You forgot the other kind of person who stands at the microwave and listens till it starts to get 5 seconds+ between pops. I thought everyone did this.
I really like the fact that they make the small portion size. I am diabetic so I cannot eat a huge amount of popcorn as a snack. My husband usually eats some of the small portion but non-buttered popcorn is actually one of the healthiest snacks out there. I use a flavored herb-salt mix too.
I'm a rogue . I still use a pan with oil and dry kernels . The difference is the oil . I use butter and bacon grease . It doesn't keep vampires away but on a quiet night , you can hear the cardiologists screaming in abject terror .
We use coconut oil and then just dump butter onto it after the popcorn is done. Works out really well. Oh, and we usually try to get the Amish popcorn. Stuff costs just about as much as generic brand bags, pound for pound, and is SO much better
The more delicate popcorn like Jolly Time usually are a white kernel type, which is smaller, pops into a delicate snowflake and the kernels are much less hard and don't get stuck in the teeth as much. The robust firm popcorn is a yellow corn type. They are bigger, they pop bigger, they have a lot more to them. They tend to pop into the "perfect" popcorn shape that is easy to eat, round, doesn't get busted up so easily so can handle the commercial tough use. Kernel type makes as much difference as flavorings. :)
Matt, you don't have to go into a movie just to buy movie theater popcorn. you don't even need a ticket, just walk in and buy some. Let that sink in for a minute. just stop by the theater, buy a large popcorn and take it home for your snacking pleasure!
Depends on the theater and sometimes the day. Like, Friday nights places might be a bit more strict on where you show your ticket because they don't want people (primarily teenagers) hanging out in the lobby waiting for the ticket taker to look away.
good business model since theaters main profit is from concessions. where i'm at the ticket counter's the first thing you hit. too afraid someone might snag an empty seat if they let them in just to go buy popcorn. even if they're making 10x more from the popcorn than the ticket.
I had a shop teacher in Middle School that would do that during his lunch sometimes. So every so often we could get a handful of popcorn during homeroom. Those were good days
A synopsis about Orville. Born & educated in Indiana, he was a food scientist who specialized in hybrids. He focused on popcorn and chose one he named RedBow. He stared his own company in 1970 and starred in his commercials. Six years later he sold the company to Hunt-Wesson and it was eventually acquired by giant food producer Con Agra. His popcorn, in my option, is the best on the market.
As someone who has spent an embarrassing amount of time trying different brands of kernals (trying to create the perfect homemade movie theatre popcorn), I strongly agree Orville has got the best popcorn kernals
The Orville movie theater one is as about as close as possible to movie theater. Imo. That being G said it still does t even come close to movie popcorn. But of the microwave it’s the closest
My lovely grandmother turned 101 on Jan 9th! She still loves pop corn! And, she gets a good laugh out of watching you, Matt! She's lived in Huntsville, Al, since 1957 when she moved from Aberdeen, MD. She and my Grandpap worked with the space program after meeting at the proving ground testing tanks during WW2! Were married 48 yrs before he passed in 1991. She's a beautiful woman who comes from a long line of long-lived people. I pray she has many more years to go! God bless you and your family, and may He bless Grandma for the time she has left with us!
I love the "By the way if you are under the age of 30 you won't get a single reference today!" 🤣"Most of RUclips is yours but THIS IS FOR MILLENNIALS" 😊
Orville Redenbacher's ULTIMATE BUTTER popcorn for the win! I tried the one you ranked, OR's BUTTER, and it was just lacking. My son is autistic and he approves of the ULTIMATE BUTTER as well.
13:09 history lesson with an engineering student time. A bunch of high end microwaves started to come with a moisture sensor inside them and to advertise this feature they started to include a popcorn buttton as it would use the sensor to detect when it was perfectly popped and stop the machine. So than cheaper brands started to include a "popcorn button" but since they didn't have a moisture sensor they would just cook it for a set time that was the average time the popcorn companies recommend. So the button can do something, just not every model has the ability to cook popcorn properly.
I live in Ramsey Indiana. Cousin Willie (RIP) used to come to our football game. Many of the other brands grow their popcorn in the field across the road.
Who remembers Jiffy Pop?! We would get that some of the time, but it was definitely more expensive than just popping your corn in a pot. THEN we got a popcorn popper! It was a heated plate (like a hot plate) that had a huge plastic (see-through yellow, of course). You would put the popcorn kernels and oil on the plate and put the lid on and turn it on. Once they were through popping, you turned it upside down, took off the plate and added any butter you melted separately.
I use Amish Country brand Baby White popcorn, cooked in Coconut oil and I add Flavocol to the mix before popping. Then melt a stick of butter for drizzling over the popcorn. It's delicious.
The name "Act II" for the popcorn brand originates from its predecessor, "Act I." In 1981, Golden Valley Microwave Foods introduced Act I, a microwave popcorn product that required refrigeration due to its real butter content. Building upon this, in 1984, they developed a shelf-stable version that didn't need refrigeration and named it Act II, signifying the next stage or "act" in their product development.
That worked on me. I learned that Piggly Wiggly's corporate headquarters are in New Hampshire, even though there are no stores in New Hampshire...or anywhere in New England, for that matter.
As a PROUD millennial, I really appreciated all the references to my childhood today. I especially enjoyed the NSYNC “ dirty pop” reference at the beginning 😂😂
There is not a microwave popcorn in existence that is as good as using a whirley-pop on the stove. Every popcorn bag out of the microwave becomes hard and doesn't chew as easy as properly popped popcorn. It doesn't take long to pop on the stove, it's just better.
Whirley pop + Snappy Coconut Popping Oil + 1 tsp of Flavacol then drizzle with Orvelle Reddenbokker Butter flavored topping oil it's just like the theaters. Love it.
I feel slightly embarrassed…stood outside and yelled I like cool shirts…Matt didn’t show but the cops did…and boy let me tell you there merch sucks…and those silver bracelet were a tight fit. 😅 Thanks for the video Matt!
I bought one of those microwave poppers that's basically a bowl and lid, but it does a damn good job at popping those kernels. Now I just need to figure out a good butter topping to use with it.
As always you bring the laughs. I laughed so hard at the Cousin Willy brand. Sadly / Thankfully we don’t have that brand here in CA. I was a little distracted also by the Colonel Sanders figurine in the back. Epic.
Pop Secret created a variety of colored popcorn called Pop Qwiz in the early-1990s. Colors included yellow, blue, green, and a mystery bag with a surprise color.
I wonder if "pop Weaver" still exist... individual bags... like 12 for 5 bucks at walmart for a while... but i haven't seen them in forever. I think I found them in dollar tree too ( only the 3 pack) but I loved them.
Orville Redenbacher was Colonel Sanders, after he entered the witness protection program. To keep his cover he had to give up chicken and he lost weight.
Fun review as always. My favorite, which was not reviewed, is Pop Secret Homestyle. I don't like all of the butter, double butter, dripping with butter, Oddles of butter, and "eating sticks of butter". The Homestyle has a great taste and you guessed it, without all the butter. I have been known to add "real" melted butter on my Homestyle, but typically, its just good by itself.
I'm sure these are all good, but here we use a paper sandwich bag and popcorn, hit the microwave popcorn button, and add fresh melted butter and salt. No chemical taste.
Killing it again Matt! I'm amazed you ranked Piggly Wiggly and agree 100%. If you ever want the best popcorn you can make, get a Stir Crazy and use bacon grease as the oil. Popcorn heaven! OMG! I posted before Uncle Willie's words of wisdom, I'm dying!!!
0:00 already a banger. I love Popcorn!! It is buttery and salty and tasty!!! Do more videos like this please!! Pop Secret is good what you talking bout. NGL All popcorn is good.
Here you go Matt, the story of act I and act II popcorn. Act II is an American brand of microwave popcorn that is ostensibly based on the look and taste of movie theater popcorn. It is currently made and distributed by Conagra Brands. Act I was introduced in 1981. In 1984, Act II, a shelf stable microwave popcorn was released, becoming the first mass-marketed microwave popcorn.
Great video. Store brands seem to be just as good or better anymore. I used to work as a truck driver in the food service industry. One of my occasional backhauls was microwave popcorn. Picked up out of big factory in Missouri. All kinds were made in that place, been 20 years so can't remember the name of the place anymore. But row after row lined up of different brands, both name and store, on that abysmally hot loading dock. I'd run my reefer units so when they opened the doors a blast of cold air would roll through the dock. They usually got me out of there faster due to the courtesy. But i digress. On their manufacturing line, their test lab would randomly select lots off the line to test. After testing, these lots (cases in which only a couple packs ere pulled out to test of each case) were stacked on pallets. And employees and others were free to take a case or just some packs, up to them. There was a brand that was either bound for Mexico that I was given. There was so much butter in it the microwave pack was stained with it and the package was squishy, like it was filled with playdough. Pretty sure my arteries clogged up a bit just holding it... But it was amazing. I am not a popcorn person. But that popcorn was, and to this day, the best I've ever had..
@@debgordon6542 actually made me lol. As why its so funny is the refrigeration units on the trailer had it somewhere between 0 and -20 depending on how far i travelled to get there. So when the trailer door was opened a bunch of them would gather around. Accompanying that blast of cold air was a wave of fog from the temperature difference, looking very much like a truckload had been smoked. Those guys on the docks there in the summer had it a bit rough. So hot they had stations every couple of docks with a few water coolers, along with dispensers for some sort of gatorade stuff to add to the water, as well as boxes of salt pills.
Years ago (think 80s) there was a gas station in NC mtns where the proprietor looked exactly like OR. Of course, that was also back in the full service days. It was a Phillips 66 Station and we always stopped there to get gas because that’s where my mom had a credit card for. My daughter was just little was always embarrassing me asking if that was him. lol! Thanks for reminding me of a good memory. The station is long gone now but I do think about it almost every time we go to the mtns.

I simply answered the question on act popcorn like I would have if I was physically present. I do the research and then read aloud from the website. I do not claim to be special or anything of the sort for answering a question.)
I'm old enough to remember the days before pre-bagged microwave popcorn (of which Orville Redenbacher started), when my family and I just shoved popcorn kernels into a brown lunch bag and put it in the microwave. I remember burning tf out of a bag of it due to me continuing to cook it when I heard kernels still popping when the microwave went off. Never did that again. lol (I seem to recall when OR brought out the microwave popping corn, it seemed as if it was in a bag that resembled a lunch bag, harkening back to my family.)
Perfect video to sit back an eat a bag of popcorn to. Ill be eating Orville redenbachers gourmet popping corn in butter flavor in 100 calorie mini bag. Lets go can't wait for this one. I agree with the choices made in this video. Iv never seen a Piggly wiggly before.
Just so you are aware, you can just go get movie theatre popcorn and not even buy a ticket to the movies. My husband does it all the time because he also thinks movie theatre popcorn is the best. He just brings it home to eat it.
I'm in Texas where there's just one Piggly Wiggly location pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Our family goes with Kirkland's from Costco, wish it had been included in your rankings.
Little tip: most theaters will let you just go to the concession stand without a movie ticket and buy popcorn to take home!!! Found that out when my wife was pregnant with our last one!
@@ronaldwade1946 a theater near my house growing up would sell literal garbage bags full of popcorn. 🤣🤣🤣 They were like $10 in the 90s. It was fresh and edible, they just sold it in huge clear garbage bags.
The theater doesn't actually make money on ticket sales. They pay basically 100% of that to the studios that produce the films. All of the rest of their operating costs, as well as whatever profit they can squeeze out, come from concessions. That is why their stuff costs 6 times as much as what seems reasonable. They charge that much because they have to, to pay their staff and the bills.
Used to love the Jolly Time Blast-O-Butter Minis, but can't find that size in the store anymore. Recently picked up a box of mini-size Orville Redenbacher and am looking forward to trying them since seeing they ranked near the top. I love eating my popcorn with chopsticks (at least at home anyway, movie theater's another story). Keeps my hand from getting buttery-gross and also slows me down eating too fast.
@ They had THE nicest offices in Omaha and were princes of the city. There was nothing Omaha would not happily bend over triple and give them. Their employees could wander out at 3am into the Warehouse District and were safer, much safer than they are now in their Chicago homes with an armed guard on the front door.
I had Jiffypop recently and it's hands-down the best popcorn you can make at home. I know it takes longer and is a little inconvenient, but it's worth it. You got a lot of popcorn from one also.
This has to be my favorite bless your ranked. I take popcorn very seriously and my freshman year of college, I ate an ungodly number of bags of microwavable popcorn so I know the feeling of scraping the side of the bag to get all that good butter.
The best popcorn is the one sold at Disney parks. I don’t know what they put in it, but it makes theater popcorn taste like Cousin Willie’s cousin made it.
In Corydon. Indiana there is a popcorn festival every year. There is a parade with popcorn cannons and it’s insane! The street is absolutely covered in popcorn. People use umbrellas turned upside down and all kinds of things to catch the popcorn with. There were kids making popcorn angles in the street! Fun times.
When I was in High School my science teacher explained to us the reason OR is so good is because of where the popcorn is grown. It grows (or used to be) on the farms around Valparaiso Indiana. Valpo is just the right distance from lake Michigan that the growing season is extended so the corn can fully grow and dry out before being harvested.
Walmart sells AMC Theatres Microwave Popcorn, Extra Butter. They even have bags of AMC Theatres Ready to Eat Popcorn, Classic Butter. I tried the ready to eat ones and it wasn't bad.
You know, a man's got choices in this life, some easy, some hard. Subscribing and ringing that bell might seem small, trivial even, but every now and then a choice can echo longer than you'd expect. Sometimes you make choices that'll shift the winds of fate, said a man on a path he didn't know he needed. It ain't just a click, partner, it's a declaration, a step into the unknown where greatness waits for those brave enough to take it. You do that, and trust me, your life won't just change, it'll mean something.

Orville died in his hot tub in 1995 at the age of 88, but his popcorn legacy lives on. Always been my personal favorite microwave popcorn.
My father knew him; he was a power grid engineer & designed the electrical system that powered his factory in northern Indiana.

Could it have been the munchies kickin in after the reefer consumption?😂
@@Mandurath You know it's hot as h*ll when they're giving out salt tablets. Thanks for all your hard work. It is certainly appreciated ❣️
@@Mandurath btw the opening of the trailer doors must've looked like something from a Cheech and Chong movie 🤣
In the Cheese Curd episode, you said that Wisconsin might be the Alabama of the North. And let me tell you, the Pig is still popular up here 😅🙌🏻
Love Bless Your Rank!! And Matt is so damn hilarious!! Never fails to entertain me! Keep it up! 😂🔥
Act II is an American brand of microwave popcorn that is ostensibly based on the look and taste of movie theater popcorn. It is currently made and distributed by Conagra Brands. Act II was preceded in the popcorn market by Act I (popcorn in theaters), an early microwave popcorn that had to be stored in the refrigerator due to its real butter content. Act I was introduced in 1981. In 1984, Act II, a shelf stable microwave popcorn was released, becoming the first mass-marketed microwave popcorn. (Edit: yes I copied and pasted from Wikipedia and therefore I do not own the answer, however I did not claim to own it. I simply answered the question on act popcorn like I would have if I was physically present. I do the research and then read aloud from the website. I do not claim to be special or anything of the sort for answering a question.)
ConAgra seems to make most of the processed foods in this country-especially the canned stuff like Chef Boyardee, Dennison's Chili and Rosarita.
copy pasting wikipedia doesn't make you special
Opinions vary , as does the definition of " special " . Just sayin ..
@@rucker69 never said I was, I provided the information to the man on the video, yes by copy and paste but still I went and looked up the information.
YES! ANOTHER LONGER VIDEO! Thank goodness for a longer video, these are always my favorite!!!
I subscribed to see more Cousin Willie!
You are truly my favorite RUclipsr. Its not just a click....love it!!
I pop popcorn by the 3 second rule. Once it stops popping for 3 seconds it's done. None of it is burned, and there are like maybe 5 unpoped kernels.
Awesome content, your humility is what makes the humor even brighter.
begone thotbot
We always had the Act II in our house growing up. The Butterlovers flavor was amazing! I highly recommend giving it a try
Who knew popcorn could be funny! Bless Cousin Willie.
The smells like feet got me...... Thanks for the laughs 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Matt, you are doing the Lord's work.
10:41 "are you serious?" the fact the crew was in disbelief.
I have a stirring popcorn maker; I use coconut oil and a little butter oil with Orville’s kernels. Seasoned with a little salt and peanut M&Ms.
Just so you are aware, you can just go get movie theatre popcorn and not even buy a ticket to the movies. My husband does it all the time because he also thinks movie theatre popcorn is the best. He just brings it home to eat it.
Cousin Willie's speech at the end was stirring! I'm from Indiana and it made me proud, even if his popcorn didn't.
Nothing beats burnt popcorn made on the stove, like God intended corn to be enjoyed 😁
Say what now? I was just wondering about that last week. Thought I might have to bribe a ticket holder to get me some 😂
@@ronaldwade1946 a theater near my house growing up would sell literal garbage bags full of popcorn.
I don't think you can beat the taste of freshly made popcorn.
This just made my Monday a whole lot better!
Conagra is spending every moment regretting deeply leaving their premium digs and charmed position in Omaha to go to Chicago. 😂😂😂
Yep, they made a big mistake moving out of Omaha. It’s not like they even get better weather now.
@ They had THE nicest offices in Omaha and were princes of the city. There was nothing Omaha would not happily bend over triple and give them. Their employees could wander out at 3am into the Warehouse District and were safer, much safer than they are now in their Chicago homes with an armed guard on the front door.
You gotta try the AMC theater perfectly popcorn . It comes with butter packets and it's soooo gooood
I've delivered popcorn from the movie theatre for DoorDash.
That's wild. They should advertise this!!
I had Jiffypop recently and it's hands-down the best popcorn you can make at home. I know it takes longer and is a little inconvenient, but it's worth it. You got a lot of popcorn from one also.
As a 2000 baby, Blockbuster and Saved By the Bell was my childhood!
I absolutely LOVE your content, Matt! 😊
Orville was from Indiana and graduated from Purdue University. So not only are you importing Big10 weather, but you're also importing our popcorn.
Receiving an inspiring message from Cousin Willie himself was not on my 2025 bingo card.
With all the snow you got down there I'm surprised you're NOT ranking snow shovels.
They don't sell snow shovels down south. Damn Yankees bring them when they move down south. 😂LOL!
Fairy dust from Tinker Bell flying overhead perhaps? 😂
In Corydon. Indiana there is a popcorn festival every year. There is a parade with popcorn cannons and it’s insane! The street is absolutely covered in popcorn. People use umbrellas turned upside down and all kinds of things to catch the popcorn with. There were kids making popcorn angles in the street! Fun times.
"Matt, how do you know what feet taste like?" *He sucks his fingers* REX RYAN ENERGY 😮
Was not mentally prepared for the esoteric Cousin Willie speech at the end wtf
👏👏👏👏
I've turned so many people onto Cousin Willie's popcorn! It's so satisfying!
Matt! Take that beautiful wife you don't deserve to the movies right now!
I'm just here for the 0:27 Popp-ed corn !!!!!..... love this man ❤
I was fully expecting to hear Cousin Willie say: "Each time you hit the SUBSCRIBE and LIKE, an angel gets its wings!" Bless his heart.
