    As a 50 year old white belt, my gym's upper level belts are always letting me get positions and talking me through positions/submissions. I think it helps the both of us.

      I'm 49 and have the same situation. I will tell them once I get to a point where I have no idea what to do. They'll talk me through options from there.

    Play off your back, give lower level belts taps without letting them necessarily know. As a higher belt, you help to set the tone of the school. Your cousin sounds great, Ryan. Great to tell all of us that as a black belt you are still learning, after allthat is where the learning begins...... Another informative video.

    This video just pulled me out of a funk I was in. I been in my own head a lot with putting pressure and expectations on myself instead of focusing on what I should be doing like drilling and solidifying my techniques. Thank you professor

    i agree
    let them have it. or latch on and stall if you want to get even. i don’t suggest turning it up against newbies and spazzes. most injuries seem to happen in the scramble for position. dedicate the energy to good partners. i try to use good pressure to lock in position but at like 1/2 speed. i spent a lot of time being smashed. i am 140lbs 5’10” at 36 years old

      @@KamaJiuJitsu There are two Gracie Academies in MA, not near me, which are owned by the same person. There is a Daniel Gracie Academy but I don't know if they do self-defense or competition.

    Thank you very much. Whenever someone tried a submission on me I would become a turtle and just let them workout through and survive the roll by doing nothing. But thanks, now I will let them have my arm and not defend it.

    What do you think about a bjj school that doesn’t encourage or don’t have open matt training on ground / sparring?

    • @spiralinglight
      @spiralinglight 5 лет назад +2

      Get a new gym

    • @Lum1n0us99
      @Lum1n0us99 5 лет назад +1

      gaseous clay there is an argument here if you are new to bjj, actual roll on the matt will not help as most people doesn’t know what to do

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  5 лет назад

      Open mat to other schools, or just an open mat time in the schedule for their members?

    • @Lum1n0us99
      @Lum1n0us99 5 лет назад +1

      Kama Jiu-Jitsu no open matt time at all even to higher belts. All practice/ moves are done on willing partners with no or little resistance

    • @aqdjbcr
      @aqdjbcr 5 лет назад +3

      Lum1n0us99 seems like a bad school to me. I would argue drilling without ever rolling is a waste of time. You will rarely be able to apply that technique against resistance if you’ve never encountered resistance. I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’ve landed moves in rolls after learning the move during drilling. I just don’t see any way you could become an effective practitioner without ever experiencing resistance. That’s like training a soccer player without ever playing a game, only dribbling around a yard. Or practicing basketball by only playing HORSE. Yeah you can get decent at some of the skills but you aren’t going to be competitive against people who actually play games and try to block your shots.

    I don't quite understand the concept of "Smashing" but I assume it is someone who is out of control and is always trying to win. There seems to be a lot of egos involved in JJ. More so than other martial arts. Also, when everybody talks about feeling like they were beat up with a baseball bat and taking hot showers for a long time after a workout to feel good, I am thinking twice about doing JJ.

      What you’re describing is referred to as a “spaz.” Smashing is when someone uses their weight to hold you in a position. Usually a bigger person. Avoid spazzes, get smashed a lot because you get used to it after a year or two.

      You’re an older gentleman man so try to avoid the stronger, younger guys who are spazzs . It’s ok to not roll with a certain person that you don’t feel safe with. Most of the time you set the pace. Against spazzs ill go full out back at them. Against people who try to use more technique we will go that route. And if you get tired after one or two rolls it’s ok to take a break or end it for the night depending on how your body feels. When you start make sure you take the free trial which most schools offer so you can see the atmosphere there, not all schools are the same.

      Nah, bjj destroys your ego in beginning (first year)
      You're taught extreme humility and will humble you in front of your peers. It's wonderful.

    • @aqdjbcr

      Lower belts lack ego, they get the ego smashed out of them. Sometimes you’ll meet a black belt who thinks their shit doesn’t stink but it’s rare. Soreness is a part of living and encountering resistance. It will be bad the first time you do anything but it gets better and when you’re more comfortable with that level of output you push yourself further and go back to being sore. It’s a cycle for improvement.
