After years of rumors and leaks, smartphones with fingerprint scanners under the display are finally here. It is the next big thing in the smartphone market.
Synaptics recently introduced a new type of optical under the screen finger scanner called Clear ID at CES 2018. This type of optical fingerprint scanner is now being used in a bunch of Chinese smartphones like OnePlus 6T, Vivo X21, Vivo V11 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro, to name a few.
Qualcomm is working on a new type of under display fingerprint scanning technology called ultrasonic fingerprint scanners called Sense ID which is currently only in prototype stage. It is being rumoured to be featured in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 or the Galaxy Note 10
The under display fingerprint scanners look and feel futuristic. But apart from the looks, are these ultrasonic and optical in-display fingerprint scanner any good? And how are they better than the common capacitive fingerprint scanners. Watch the video to find out.

I still think fingerprint scanners are better as of now. It's faster and more convenient. Face IDs have to do some serious catch up to match with fingerprint.

I still prefer normal fingerprint scanners. The indisplay fingerprint scanners are just gimmick. They don't solve any real problem and also they increase the cost of changing the phones display. So why bother to put them in our phones.
But you can't deny the fact that a few people still prefer it in the front

I noticed that too
I always wanted to have fingerprint scanner on the front. But because of thinner bezels they had to put scanners only at back. But thanks to optical Scanners they are in the front again which is the best place to put the fingerprint scanner.
I respect your view. But I don't agree the front is the best place to put the fingerprint reader. But that's debatable and I am planning to make a video on that topic too. So stay tuned

Yeah it's difficult. But i prefer it on the back, as it feels very natural when your pulling out of your pocket.
I too prefer it to be on the back. Optical scanners can't do that
I prefer it on back. It is easy to unlock with onehand when you are already holding your phone

Going from capacitive to optical is unbearable, anyone who says optical is fast hasn't used a capacitive in a while.

In display fingerprint sensors are unnecessary... they are slower, less accurate and more expensive than normal ones. Why do you have to reinvent the wheel?

Face ID is slow and is not working the whole time. Hopefully, the iPhone 12 has an In-Display fingerprint sensor in it.
