    2022 ELECTRICAL CORROSION ISSUES There have been quite a few cases of electrical corrosion problems on 2022 models. Occasionally it causes oil pump failure and seized engines at low hours. Beta USA is providing good support, hopefully it's good in other countries too. The Australian distributor has been blaming dealers for not doing 'correct' pre-sales preparation and putting dialectric grease in the connections! But thankfully the factory has started doing that on more recent models. Beta USA is very supportive when bikes seize. Many owners are now scrapping the oil injection immediately and using premix.
    2022 ONGOING MAIN BEARING FAILURES Beta dealers are still informing us about occasional main bearing failures at low hours in the 2022 models but it appears to be at a much lower rate than back 2018 and 2019 at least.
    2019-2022 ECU FAILURES Beta used to use high quality Japanese made Kokusan CDIs, but in 2019 they changed over to a nameless Chinese version. Beta dealers are replacing quite a few of these under warranty. Hopefully it will fail during the warranty period if it's going to fail.
    OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES The speedos are still quite unreliable. One dealer says he just has a big box of these to hand out as they regularly fail during the warranty period. Overall the electrics can be problematic. Another dealer told us he's frustrated with the time spent fixing a wide variety of little electrical gremlins (e.g. engine light comes on when using high beam).
    OTHER PROBLEMS
    Assembly still seems to be very sloppy at the Beta factory... missing bolts, bolts too tight or too loose, terrible routing of the wiring in some cases. The good dealers know what to fix and will sort it out in pre-sales prepration. Quite a few dealers won't. Be sure to ask them!

      @@freetaylor72 Make sure you service the ground strap at the frame contact that’s likely the issue. Simple fix.

  • @crosstrainingenduro
    @crosstrainingenduro  2 года назад +12

    PROBLEM IS WORSE THAN EXPECTED. Beta USA hoped the cause was salty air corroding the electrics in transit, but now the problems seem to be too widespread. Beta has never been great with electrics. Just look at how many speedos fail. And sometimes the electrical problems are just fixed with a complete replacement of the wiring loom. This has happened under warranty and also outside.
    It is interesting to see that in many cases there is only corrosion on the one pin for the oil injection, which suggests salty air is not the cause. Some proposed theories are the oil pump is drawing too much current for the contact area on that connection. Or possibly a poor ground wire contact is doing the same?
    Hopefully Beta USA will post any further reports, I bet Beta head office won't bother... as usual. One dealer I spoke to said Beta changed from the ultra reliable Japanese made CDIs a few years back, to some generic no-name brand probably made in China. He wonders if crap quality CDIs might be part of the problem. Who knows?
    ME? I'M DITCHING BETA. In our group, Ben changed over to TM last year. My brother and I have just sold our RR300 and Xtrainer, and will move to either TM or Sherco. We've had enough of Beta head office failing to address known issues, or taking so long to fix them, and providing so little support to their distributors, dealers, or customers, unless forced to do so.
    OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES A few Beta dealers have told me the waterproofing on 2022 electrical connections is pretty bad on both two and four stroke models, also Beta Australia is reluctant to pay for warranty claims because they reckon dealers should be putting grease in every connection (??!!). They also said Beta seem to have swapped from the ultra reliable Kokusan CDIs in 2018 to a cheaper Chinese made variant so CDIs are failing at a small but significant rate.
    OTHER POSSIBLE KNOWN ISSUES? A 2022 Xtrainer found movement in the rear shock upper mount, it appears the top bolt is too small. I suspect this is a one-off, but if anyone else discovers this, let us know.
    LOCATION OF THE GROUND WIRE: It's up high on the frame near the top of the rear shock mount. Remove the fuel tank for easy access. See this vid: ruclips.net/video/Bhb3K1jkmEI/видео.html
    POSSIBLE POOR WIRING ROUTING NEAR RADIATOR: Signs of this include engine cutoff and not restarting, intermittent mapping switch, only cutting out when the radiator is hot, strange OBD codes, dead battery. The harness is not fastened were it crosses the radiator and can be inadvertently moved when taking the tank off and disconnecting the map switch. Beta was great at helping, they sent me a coil, ECU and ultimately replaced the wiring harness even though the bike was out of warranty.
    - Captain Cornbread's Dirt, Gravel and Asphalt ruclips.net/video/5CBp6ZJWkcs/видео.html
    FURTHER COMMENTS ON THE 2022 ELECTRICS One owner reports he can see Beta has revised the wiring under the fuel tank so that turning the bars is less likely to put pressure on the crimped earth wires. 👍

    As far as the salt air affecting the connectors, they are sealed so moisture must be getting in from someplace else. Or they just weren’t assembled correctly. His inspection of the engine top end showed no damage, however Beta said they would replace the top end and jug anyway as well as a complete harness and ECU. These corroded pins were first reported in the USA, and Beta USA claimed it was due to bikes sitting in freight containers during covid-inspired delays. But it seems to be happening everywhere so I think it must be an issue from the factory. The Beta Australia distributor is very aware of the problem and apparently has at least one Beta very annoyed because he's saying the dealers should be putting grease in the electrical connection of every new bike. The dealers I spoke to think it's definitely a warranty claim as it's a factory defect.

Nothing I've done seems to have any affect on that particular throttle opening. I expect the bike to have snappy response through the entire range but just doesn't seem like it wakes up until beyond 1/4 throttle. I'm hoping that, despite being an x-trainer, its not tuned to perform that way by default - e.g. pipe performance characteristics, watered-down cdi power curves. Almost 5 years on, my 2017 at just over 300 hours had the yellow MIL fault lamp turn on during a 56 mile outing. It was intermittent for a little while then full on. There was still smoke under acceleration, so I knew the oil injection was still functional.
    It turned out to be BOTH wires broke at the oil injection pump connector, right through the insulation!! In turn the ECU started pumping at max rate fir the duration of the ride. I just figured out it is a Sumitomo connector (identical to many automobile fog lamps!!) and $13.00 on eBay just bought the fix, with a pigtail lead as well. I'll be using a hot glue gun to stabilize and reinforce the wires, and some heat shrink tubing too.
    The Beta Italian wiring/wire harness is abysmal. Low quality wires. Or else they learned from China. It seems my only annoyances are stupid little stuff like this otherwise I love the bike and will likely ride it forever. Just did my first top end too. Old piston looked fantastic.

      Overlooking the main bearing issues, the Beta two strokes have generally been great. But yes, their electrics are terrible. And quality control at the factory is often very low. Call it what it is- poor, ancient, backward Beta electrical engineering. My Beta 300rr oil injection finally shit the bed last month and got tossed and so premix followed. Because I knew the wiring is inferior so in keeping a close eye on the bike the engine survived when it first stopped smoking, simply by adding oil to the fuel tank. Junk electrical system is what it is all about, otherwise my Beta 300 is fine, rides nice and I like it. Interesting videos but need the hard facts painfully exposed to encourage proper manufacturing by the factory. Electrical issues have been going on far too long with these bikes. On a more serious note, the only real issue of note is occasional gearbox issues with shifting in a small number of cases. And some claim third gear is a bit weaker than other brands but not much evidence for it.

      You'll be fine, JR. 😊 It's only a percentage of bikes with electrical issues, see our Beta 2022 known issues vid to see how to do the check although sounds like you know about that already. Maybe just remove the oil injection once the warranty runs out and you can't really have anything seriously go wrong then. Except maybe tow the bike out if the CDI fails (which is pretty rare).

    Look at it it fails, that's why they make such beautiful things with low miles

      In what way though? The current models seem to be very reliable and the main issue mentioned in this vid appears to be an external cause. The majority of Beta riders have no problems. What are you basing your opinion on?

    That's a pretty big list, and only 2/3 fixed? Bah, humbug. Shame, shame, Beater.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  2 года назад +1

      That's not a comprehensive list. If you want the full list it's closer to 90% fixed. And you'll find all the European brands are pretty similar in this respect. I figure if owners aren't prepared for the occasional issue that pops up with any eurotrash they need to buy a Japanese bike and just accept the Japanese rarely change or update their dirt models... which means less known issues.

    There is no excuse for poor wiring on anything modern other than being cheap and lazy.

      Over the years they have eventually worked on most issues but their electrics obviously need more work still. 🤔 All the Europeans could learn a lot from the Japanese in this regard.

      Neither brand is junk though. What are you basing your judgment on? I've done known issues with all sorts of bikes and you can even make Japanese bikes sound like a pile of crap if you dig deep enough.

      @@crosstrainingenduro I'll add that Beta is known for covering issues well past the initial 6 month warranty period! What other brand comes with 6 month warranty??

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  2 года назад +2

      This does vary from country to country though depending on the national distributor. Beta USA have been consistently very good with their support. Other countries vary. I've heard the most complaints from the UK where it seems warranties were often not honoured. Beta head office in Italy has a very poor record of sending out service bulletins to national distributors/dealers or actively looking for known issues and resolving them.
