Wow, thanks so much, James! You made my day by pointing out that trick of applying 12 volts to the brush assembly to restore the magnetism! I had a brain freeze when grid power was restored to my house and I failed to disconnect the generator, so power backfed into the generator and obviously demagnetized it so there was no output. I wish I had found your video before I completely disassembled the generator for no reason. Now it's working like a charm. You da' man!

Wow James ,that is a lot of work ! When I went to Electrical school a long time ago we studied motors, AC and DC . We learned how generators work. WE also had a project to rewind a motor . After 40 some odd years ,I still have that motor. One thing we did after we finished winding the stater and soldering the poles together and checking for proper polarity was spray the stater winding was we called Red Dog .It was an insulating spray to help ensure even the windings were laminated, this was a little insurance. I realize that when you are manufacturing thousands of these rigs a month , you can stop and spray insulating spray on the windings.

To save a little time when adjusting an AVR, you can flip it over and use a single bolt on one side to secure it to one of the end cover mounting holes. That holds it steady enough to get a screwdriver on the potentiometer while the generator is running.

I know you are trying to help the DIYer trying to fix their generators thus the use of the general purpose multimeter test leads. You built a special purpose fuel tank to make your life easier. Consider making some special purpose test lead adapters that are more secure. Especially when measuring while the gen is running.

I have seen quite a few of Mr. Condon's interesting and well made videos of how to maintain and repair these generators. And they do not seem to be a ripe product ready to be offered to the general consumer as a solution to their need of a source of electricity in case of a power outage on the general grid. These generators seem, to develop every fault one can imagine, even after a short time use. Not many have the knowledge of Mr. Condon nor the equipment to troubles-shoot the machines when they stop working.

I would NEVE find one or as many gennys as you do and if I could people would want WAY too much for them even if broken... Your lucky that you are able to especially seeing how capable you are in fixing them. Thanks for the video and Great Job as usual. Stay safe my friend!

Definitely deserve support with the detail you go into. I love trouble shooting but can't do much if your unaware what you are looking for.

I noticed that he calls the alternator a "power head," I don't care what B&S calls it, it IS an alternator. I noticed that he used the slickest solid known to man (Teflon) to keep a screw in a stripped out hole instead if a hardwood toothpick or a gob of thread lock. I did not understand why he didn't test the diodes in the bridge when he first had them out. I own a B&S generator, but it has a vertical shaft engine and alternator. (11.5 bhp) The outlet & CB box (plastic) denigrated and I had to buy a replacement. Originally I saw the dark mater on the windings as being some kind of tar. I enjoyed watching it. Ron W4BIN

Enjoy all your videos as they are very informative! I’m surprised that with the large number of generators that you work on you don’t have some sort of hoist or lift and a table to make them a more convenient height to work on. Working on these on the floor has got to rough on the knees!

This looks almost like a Troybilt job I have, Dang I almost knew it, a rectifier bridge on
back of brushes whole set-up is a 91825GS brushes and rectifier. as I understand these
can b gotten from home depot for about 32$ there is about 7.5 volts going to the rotor.

James, once again, another excellent video. If I may, I have a 4k generator that is causing me fits. It is putting out 185 volts regular. I need to see if you could point me somewhere where I can get a new head possibly. I have tried and tried but can not find one. Must be looking for it wrong. It is just like the one you replaced on this storm generator. four bolts and the concave shaft. Thanks for your help.

Check the engine speed board circuit board generally located in the cover of the powerhead unit

Your comments regarding ohmmeter and subtracting the resistance of your test-leads... Some meters have a button which can be pressed to zero out the meter while leads are connected together. This will automatically compensate for lead-resistance.

Nice fix. My home built 8600watt generator broke during a freak ice storm . Belt got chewed up. a local trip to autozone fixed it. the avr is a nice addition. I have a italian headunit mecca alte It has a capacitor where your avr is. 8600,7000 watts .dont know which is better avr or the huge capacitor..

Honestly I like the capacitor. Keep it simple. If the engine is running fast you hear it and know the voltage is high. I have seen AVRs go bad and start putting out 170 volts with a normal engine speed.

I think the red wire on the brushes was in the wrong place in the beginning. It was on the right. When you fitted a new avr, you've put it on the left. That solved the problem.

Great video as always. I'm having a nearly identical problem with a Generac quiet pact 75. The only thing I can find is the stator windings to ground is .35 megaohms and should be zero. Is that enough to condemn the stator?

    • @jcondon1
      @jcondon1  2 года назад

I think so. Anything less then 10 million ohm is probably an issue.

Very informative. What I would love to know, though, is if these things are worth rewinding, especially the Chinesium versions that for some reason have enameled aluminum for coil windings.
I've once worked on a similar looking unit to this, with the working head you had installed, but no power. The rotor wire had broken off, but refused all efforts to soldering, as it would neither wet nor tin. Then a piece broke off, and that's how I figured out what kind of wire it was.
It worked when I reconnected the wire, but with the kind of material used and the conditions it was subject to as a jobsite generator, I have a feeling that it would not stay working for long. Hence me wondering if it can be rewound.

James. Great videos. Learned a lot from you about gens. I'm in the market for one but so much conflicting info out here. Have you ever considered making a rating table? You know, buy a cheap Predator but be prepared to fix this or that on it. Or don't buy a Home Lite or a Coleman cuz they're crap, Briggs Vanguard engine is better because... how to identify a knock off engine, etc. Your fans would love it but not so much the manufacturers unless you just hit the positives...
