      @@adamstevenson6872 Any one of the major growers media brands will work. I generally prefer Sungrow over Promix because it has less weed seeds. Whether it contains mycorrhizal inoculants or not doesn't matter. Usually the better mixes have it. I have found the use of rooting hormone is counter productive with Passiflora. I never use hormones for this genus. Since organic fertilizers create fungal and bacterial cultures I never Use them on cuttings. The roots will develop from the stored nutrients in the cutting not from nutrients in the soil. Fertilizer in the media is actually damaging until the cuttings have roots. I never fertilize cuttings until after the cutting has roots. The biological activity caused by fertilizer will reduce your chances of success by a considerable margin. Water, light and a good media is all that is required for this. Less is more effective.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1

      South Florida, the Keys and maybe better spots in San Diego, CA would support the plant. An unheated greenhouse might push it as far north as coastal central California. This one is much more tropical than the Passiflora edulis we call Lilikoi. The Yellow or Purple Lilikoi grow easily as far north as San Francisco.

    Hi, I have planted one, but I don't know how often it has to be watered.
    I also had it sitting under direct sunlight and notice that the leaves were drying up very fast. Now I relocated it to a more shaded place.
    Thanks in advance for your answer.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  7 лет назад +1

      In Hawaii we plant this vine in full sun. It will tolerate some shade but only if it has sunlight up higher it can climb to. Here I never water the vines if they are in the ground. They will do fine under ambient rain fall. In nursery containers I water a few times per week if the rains stop. If the rain is normal once per week will usually keep the pots moist. If the leaves were burning I can come up with three or four possible causes. The plant may have been grown under shady conditions and wasn't adjusted to the full sun yet. The plant was over fertilized with a high salt fertilizer or a manure. The original soil the plant was grown in was going dry in between watering even if the surrounding earth appeared wet. The plant was being kept too wet causing the roots to rot off. I realize this is a lot of ground to cover but the cause would be one of more of these most likely. If all is well the plant would not burn leaves because of sunshine.

    • @angeldavila2098
      @angeldavila2098 7 лет назад

      GreenGardenGuy1 Thanks, it was the fertilizer. Don't know if I should transplant to another container, or its just too late.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  7 лет назад +1

      If a potted plant has been over fertilized I usually try to remove any visible pellets then I just leach the container with water for days on end. This will usually flush out the rest. As long as the roots were not burned away from the fertilizer the leaves will regrow. If the roots were burned things are more to chance. I suggest using light doses of time release fertilizer in containers. I use a 12 month release Osmocote in the nursery and after thousands of applications I have yet to burn a single plant.

Last week I tore everything out so I could build a new nursery table. I replanted the vines in a new area but them the damn hogs broke in screwed everything up. When I try to grow green non-woody (the ends) cuttings of other vine species such as CA wild grape or wild cucumber they die on me. In the case of wild cucumber here the entire vine green and thin coming out of the soil to the tips so I can't get a woody cutting anywhere. Do you have any advice on this or are some vine species just unable to root from cuttings?

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  7 лет назад +1

      In the case of the California river grape (Vitis californica) the plant is easy from dormant hard wood cuttings. I usually get near 100% success if cuttings are struck in winter. Since grapes are so easy to root I suspect a soft wood cutting might work but it would require mist and bottom heat for good results. Hard wood is much easier and the grapes were dormant when I was in CA earlier this week. So no time like the present.
      You are correct, not all plants work from cuttings. Most members of the cucumber family are propagated from seeds. Wild cucumber set plenty of them. Some are native and others are generally considered an invasive species in CA. Other than seeds I believe air layering would work on cucumber. Good luck, Bill

      Where there is a will there is a way. It is always possible but I probably wouldn't bother. The plants are huge and have a low yield. It takes a lot of vine and leaf square footage to produce a single fruit. Some of the hybrid passion fruit would be better. They produce fruit earlier and far more fruit per sq. foot. The Hybrid between P. edulis & P. laurifolia is one of the finest on earth. Best taste, great appearance and incredible production in short time span.

    • @raregrowsNJ
      @raregrowsNJ 3 года назад

      @@GreenGardenGuy1 I did see that the vine does get huge and needs to be cross pollinated to set fruit, was hoping the pot size would limit the roots and force flowering without necessarily getting too huge but I haven't read too much into this. My edulis and mollissima vines are in 10.5in pots so definitely rootbound but produce well. If anything I'd be content with just getting blooms being that the flower is huge and interesting to look at. Will look into the hybrid you mentioned, thank you for the suggestion!

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  3 года назад +1

      @@raregrowsNJ The giant does not require cross pollination. The flowers aren't good for bees though. Humming bird moths do good work.
      Cramping to limit growth generally produces low grade fruit. These plants are huge and require a lot of foliage square footage to develop sugar for flavor.
      The P. edulis x P. laurifolia is found here on this Island. I believe it originated here. No one I have met has put a name on it.

      A bit of advice for you on horticultural nomenclature. If you intend to correct others use of language it is best to stick to scientific Latin. That is the only place where names can be right or wrong. When speaking common tongue the names of plants are different from area to area and language to language. In Latin this plant is called Passiflora quadrangularis. All plants in the genus Passiflora can properly be called Passion Fruit when speaking American English. In Hawaii this is called Lilikoi. The names you use are of Spanish and French origin. They are correct. Your error was claiming the fruit isn't named Passion fruit. It is, in my language. Aloha

      It sounds like damage to the roots. I would make some cutting for the vine. this will be the only way to save the plant from root death.

      @@diptipotphode5429 I am a horticulturist, not a psychic. With the limited information of brown spots and falling flowers I can only make an obvious guess. If it is some other sort of issue like a bacteria, fungus or lack of pollinators than the solution would be different but more exact data would be required to make any further guesses. A series of high resolution photos, careful verbal descriptions and some back story would be needed. I suspect my first guess is right and making cuttings of the vine would be the only solution. Propagation of prized plants is a great idea. If you have three you can let the bugs and the weather have two but there will still be one left for the gardener.

      I do sell the seeds for this plant but I am currently out of stock. I anticipate a fresh crop in mid summer. You can find my seed listings at www.greengardenservice.net Check in and the seed should naturally list as the fresh stuff comes.

    How can I propagate a plant of aristolochia littoralis? I tried green cuttings and they die everytime, they turn black

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      I have never propagated this vine. I sold plenty of them in CA that were grown from cuttings by propagators. All data I can find indicates that seeds, cuttings or air layers are propagation techniques for the plant. Do you get other common plants to work from cuttings under your growing conditions? A sterile medium, herbaceous cutting, hormone and a shaded location with bottom heat are required. When all else fails either grow the seeds or air layer the vine.

    • @Gumbbol
      @Gumbbol 6 лет назад

      @@GreenGardenGuy1 I tried hibiscus and it worked but it wasn't a sterile medium, I used cinnamon for rooting, only the aristolochia cuttings rot, now I'm trying to propagate the giant lilikoi, I have four cuttings in peat moss, another one in a giant pot where my blackberry are, another in bottled water and another one in a pot with leaf medium

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      I use a single medium for rooting everything except vanilla orchids. In a bale it is called Pro-mix. It contains milled sphagnum peat and perlite.

    • @bayoubeadery4613
      @bayoubeadery4613 5 лет назад

      I've had no luck with aristolochia cuttings even though I live in a warm humid climate and have a temperature controlled greenhouse. I've tried in soil and also in a cloner. They seem to be pretty difficult. They didn't die in the cloner but just sat there for weeks and didn't root.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  5 лет назад

      I do not grow aristolochia. There are dozens of species and i suspect they vary when taken from cuttings. I have sold the plants in California for years and i know the grower produced them from cuttings. You mentioned you had them for weeks in a cloner. If the cuttings are not dead then rooting is still to occur in time. Weeks with some plants is a short time for root production. All the second hand material on the web indicates that soft wood cuttings will root using a rooting hormone in an inert media of perlite with vermiculite and milled sphagnum at 75 degrees with bottom heat and mist. If this information is correct then it means they are not partiularly easy to root. Are you trying to do this commercially or just for a free plant? If it is just for the plant why don't you just try pegging the vine? It should be more reliable.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      Good luck on that idea. These are fully tropical vines and tend not to adapt to less than tropical conditions. In the UK I would consider Passiflora edulis or P. incarnata instead. The first is risky but the second will succeed.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  6 лет назад

      These vines produce extremely large fruit and I believe the plant self thins in order that it doesn't over load it's self. It is also possible you do not have pollinators in your area that like this plant. See if hand pollination helps. I would not count my success by what drops off. I would count what remains. I have never seen more than 6 fruit at a time ripening on my plant.

      @@emadsaleh8311 Late reply but just in case anyone else wants to know here's my answer. I live in the desert and in the heat I need to water every day. If it goes over 105 Fahrenheit, I water twice a day. But it does depend on how well your soil drains. Use a wooden dowel to poke the soil and if it comes out wet, you've watered too much. If it's damp, it's just right and if it's dry, water more. Good luck.

      Your question is an incomplete sentence and doesn't have specific meaning. I'm not wanting to watch my entire video to try and understand what you are asking. I will guess that you might refer to suggestion on soil mix for cuttings? If so it is because all three ingredients have different functions and together they make an excellent medium, alone not so good. Just buy a seed starting mix, it is ready to go and you won't have to worry about recipes.

Complications, high postal rates and border customs all make international sales a terrible problem. There is only one member of the Passion Fruit family (Lilkoi) that I know will grow in zone 7, Passiflora incarnata, the Maypop. It will grow in most places from zones 5 to 10. I believe it is the only member of the family that is hardy enough for you to grow. I do not have this plant because I am in zone 11 but it is pretty easy to find from mail order sources like One Green World and others.

    • @GreenGardenGuy1
      @GreenGardenGuy1  7 лет назад +1

      I actually do not know the answer to this question. It would take an expert on Passiflora genetics. My guess is that crossing different Passiflora is possible we have several well know hybrids out there in the flowering passion vines. I suspect that Passiflora edulis is more suitable as a cross for the Maypop because it is a closer relative.

      This is probably why no one has made the cross. In locations where the Giant Passion fruit will grow there are dozens of other excellent passion fruit. We don't use the Maypop. In places where the maypop grows the other passion fruits will not survive.
