I went to my priest and sought reconciliation. In the depths of my despair, I saw Christ holding His hand out for me. That was several years ago. Now I'm attending classes at the seminary and seeking to become a deacon. Christ's love is so great that nothing stands against it. Good message, Father.

      @@danielyoung5137 Hi, Daniel! But yes, it is something one would think Chesterton would have said, right? But I'll tell you what delights me even more about Father Casey's channel: Compared to some other "Catholic" RUclipsrs, (and you'll know who I'm talking about), we see here our sisters and brothers talking about their struggling and searching to follow Our Lord in those struggles. Their lives are not consumed in judging The Other, but instead they are reaching out to The Other. For an old Jesuit-trained guy like me, it is clear that here the "Good Spirit" is at work, and not the "Bad Spirit".
      And to see the Lord at work in this way here brings me, personally, great joy. And while we're offering up some of our favorite pearls of wisdom, it was Teilhard de Chardin, SJ, who so famously said, "Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of God in your life." Joy; not judgment. And because Father Casey is so clearly an instrument of the Lord's peace, bringing faith where there is doubt, and, especially in this video, hope where there is despair, he can be assured that he is walking with his Founder Francis and oh so gently bringing his message to the People of God. And for that good I give great thanks to God.

      @@elizabethwalter5744 You can definitely tell the backdrop of the war Lewis is writing from, as the themes track well with it. It's a shame that it's one of his less well-known works because it's a fascinating look both into his mind and into the nature of humanity. I won't spoil it and it's been awhile since I read it but Out of Silent Planet(Book 1) was written in 1938 right before the war started and so deals a lot with questions of racism and imperialism. Book 2 was written in 1943 right in the middle of the war and so deals with things like the struggle between good and evil, the capacity of humanity to do both, and God's plan for the world. Book 3, That Hideous Strength, from the end of the war deals with things like hope, faith, and redemption. Also, fun fact, the main character of the series, Ransom is based off Lewis's longtime friend, J.R.R. Tolkien who was the one who converted him to Christianity in the first place when they were both professors at Oxford in the 1920s.

    Thank you so much for this one, Father Cassey! It’s been 6 months since I came back to the Catholic Faith (I was a curious and firm protestant for almost 6-7 years). Everything is soooo overwhelming (especially when I learned that “once saved is always saved” isn’t a thing in Catholic Faith) and along the way (even up to this day), scrupulosity plagues me. I had to go to confession for almost weekly because of the guilt of the past, and even the subtle errors and temptations I have been experiencing. I thank God because I am given a chance to watch this video, and it helped me realize that God’s love is greater than the multitude of my sins-and He’s more powerful than the devil. Please pray for me, brothers and sisters, so that by God’s grace, I’ll overcome this scrupulosity. 🙏🏽✨ (Greetings from Philippines! 🇵🇭)

    The series Lucifer had a similar take on hell. That God doesn’t send people there; they send themselves there, and relive their guilt unknowingly for eternity. And they weren’t locked there; they could leave at any time; but they would have to realize they’re in hell, and confront and heal from their guilt in order to.

      I liked the portrayal of Lucifer too. One might criticize the humanizing of him, but I like to look at the tv character as a typical lost sheep. Lost in his own cynicism, guilt, shame, nihilism. There is an ubandance of people like that in the world, often in position of wealth and power like Mr. Morningstar. In the end, there is salvation for him and while there's certainly no salvation for the real Satan, there is for anyone of us, no matter how wicked and beyond redemption we think we are. In the show, God never gave up calling out for him, reaching out for him and that is exactly what He does for us in our lifetime.

      no. what happens is that yoour rational self is your physical brain. your soul is purely emotional. So all emotions you fill it with during life stay there after death, and that's what leads to your after-death decision on whether go TO God or AWAY from Him. Hating God in life is a very unwise decision, so correct it while you still can.

    I absolutely love this. So often I can feel myself getting discouraged and almost despair. Everything seems to be a mortal sin and until I go to confession and hear pretty much what you are saying here, Satan has a field day with me. Possibly we Catholics are too concerned with who is not worthy than with God’s love. Just as The Chosen points out, Jesus was so frustrated with this very mentality. And here we are 2,024 years later falling into the same mindset. We all heed to remember….no one is “worthy” of God’s love if we look at our sinfulness…..BUT….HE loves us,so we ARE worthy. We need to ALWAYS crawl back to Him…..HE loves us more than we hate ourselves.

    Father Casey, your words deeply touched me. In the past year and a half I had experienced a sense of despair, anxiety and depression I had not experienced before. I retired, after 30 years of employment, which occurred the year prior to COVID which impacted us on a national level. My mind had always been occupied by work and our children. Shortly after retirement I started to feel stagnant and anxious. Without going into the psychologically of my situation, I started to experience intrusive thoughts which created great anxiety. At one point, I told my wife I felt as if I was going over the edge and felt disconnected from reality. I would pray and pray and pray, but felt as if God was not listening. The intrusive thoughts made me feel terrible about myself. I can honestly say I was never hurt, or angry with God regarding my mental anguish. What started happening was that my prayers were leading me to a place of introspection. God led me to an audio book on intrusive thoughts, as well as therapy. I would soon start to view my situation not as something that was happening TO me, but rather as something that was happening FOR me. My mental and emotional challenges led me to a deeper place of faith and prayer. It also led me to a better place in my relationship with my beautiful wife of 44 years. God was ALWAYS listening and speaking to me. I just couldn’t hear Him through the cacophony and clamor of my own inner dialogue, which led me to places of despair, hopelessness and fear. In reality, we may not always feel happy, but even throughout the challenges of our human condition and the emotions that entails, we can still experience the JOY of our Precious Lord Jesus Christ. The devil is the antithesis of love and everything that is positive and good. Its first line of attack would be to not love ourselves, affecting how we love others around us. Thank you Jesus Christ for leading me to Father Casey.

    I feel like this I needed to see, like I feel like God is talking through you, as it relates a lot to what my Pastor was talking about the last Sunday, and what we were talking about in Bible study last night ... how saying "I'm so irredeemable that even God can't save me" is a twisted form of pride or vanity, I forget how he put it, but it says you don't believe God is strong enough, when God is in fact strong enough. And how my Pastor talked about you could fall so deep into a pit, and a compassionate friend could put aside everything and risk it all to help you, but ... then there's two people in the pit ... and no way to climb up and out of it ... cos only the Hand of God could reach that immeasurable amount to save us - both of those friends in the pit. Amen. 🙏🏻

    As a child in the 1960's, I had been given the impression that unless I was a perfect little angel (which I was not!), God would not accept me. My father was abusive, and the nuns who taught at the parochial school I had to go to were judgmental and were always ready to punish a misbehaving child. I spent many decades feeling fearful and quite sure I was bound for Hell because I had anger and anxiety issues. Therapy, which gave me a diagnosis of complex childhood PTSD, and my church friends and pastor, who accept and value me just the way I am, helped me a lot. A friend told me, "Remember - God is loving you right at this moment!" Still, I'm comforted by your video, and I'm always comforted by Romans 8:31-39. Contrary to what so many people think, and media depicts (like he addressed in a recent video), priests are probably some of the most in-tune people to the human condition. Not to mention the gifts and graces they receive from the Holy Spirit if their prayer life is good. And most have 6-8 years of seminary study, too. Fr. Thank you for making this video! I really needed it. My whole life has been leading me to despair because of cruel words of people in my life. I was always told I was too sensitive when, as an only child, I had no outlet and had to figure things out for myself. Being plus sized, I developed binge eating young because I was glared at for taking seconds and wanting a snack by my stepdad and his mom and comments also coming from my dad and ex stepmom, basically I’ve given up. But my faith has kept me grounded though I struggle to be around cruel people

    Hope is the thing with feathers
    That perches in the soul,
    And sings the tune without the words,
    And never stops at all,
    And sweetest in the gale is heard;
    And sore must be the storm
    That could abash the little bird
    That kept so many warm.
    I've heard it in the chillest land,
    And on the strangest sea;
    Yet, never, in extremity,
    It asked a crumb of me.

    Good video content as always -- but also really enjoyed the interesting filming style this time. On the theme, one might mention the Screwtape Letters, where the senior demon instructs the junior demon in skills of avoiding the various series of human failings against each vulnerable individual. Vanity for one, gluttony for another.

    Hello Father, this video resonated so much with me. I am 22 years old (F) and struggling with faith. It's not the atheism that is drawing me away from God nor any materialistic good that is competing with God. I'm falling away because of God's silence. I am heartbroken that I do not believe in Him as I used to, it's like he has disappeared. If anyone experienced the same I would be so happy to read your stories.
    Can you please do a second video on how not to lose hope?

    • @nathangraham2189
      @nathangraham2189 3 месяца назад +1

      I’ve been there, yep. It feels like God’s presence just disappeared somehow.
      For some this is how God brings them fuller into communion with Him. He takes away the spiritual consolations precisely because we grow attached to them, and then we must confront the question “Do I love God, or just the consolations and feelings He gave me?”
      I know it’s hard for SURE, but don’t give up. Instead, go deeper. Read St. John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul. It’s a chance for spiritual growth, don’t despair.❤

    To this day, I still maintain that the best personification of the Devil in popular media is Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. The Dark Side embodies all the vices that even the most righteous of people can fall to, and Palpatine uses all of these to subvert an entire galaxy to his will.
    Most telling of all, Palpatine literally creates a mockery of Jesus in the form of Anakin Skywalker (just to hit the point home, in-universe he is of virgin birth), just to subvert him to evil, and nearly gets away with doing the same to Luke.
    But no matter how close he came, he was never able to eradicate the light side fully. The light continues to shine in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
    Also, fun fact: there's at least one audiobook reading of John Milton's Paradise Lost in which McDiarmid is cast as Satan, largely thanks to his portrayal of Palpatine.

    OH MY GOODNESS, Father... this was SO EXCELLENT!!! Well done! I often get too wordy & sometimes lose my way when trying to explain aspects of our Faith like this, or even digest it myself, so I am grateful to have this resource to refer back to & to share with others... THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
    This video puts these very important concepts into a succinct, understandable presentation that will allow many to say, "Ahhhhhh, this makes sense... now I get it!!!". Despair, at least partly borne out of our refusal to forgive ourselves, in conjunction with our refusal to allow God to forgive us (the sin against The Holy Spirit)... THESE THINGS, the evil one loves, promotes, & feeds off, yet it is paramount for us to remember & hold dear, that Christ has overcome the world; that He is our Hope & our Salvation... Jesus is the answer to EVERYTHING, ALWAYS!
    God bless you, Fr. Casey!😇

    As a Catholic, I am occasionally asked if I believe in the devil and I say yes. I just wish he had horns and cloven hoofs so it would be easy to spot him. Judas is doomed, not because he betrayed Jesus, but because he despaired of redemption. The devil tempts us to despair and our knowledge of our sins can be crushing. Put your Faith in God. He made you. He loves you. Stay hopeful.

    I couldn’t have come across this video at a more perfect time. After being recently confronted with the vitriol many Christians have been expressing towards people with intersex birth defects due to the recent issue with the boxer in the Olympics. Within the last hour, I’ve began to doubt my coming back home to the church, feeling like there is no place for me. Just this Sunday I went to my first mass in 23 years and here I am feeling lower than I have in all those years. But what if it’s not what it appears? What if this is satan trying to destroy my hope? I hadn’t even considered this as an option before this video so, thank you.

    This reminds me of What Dreams May Come (1998). In the movie, Heaven is a society of union. Everyone works together, and rejoices. Hell is painted as a place created by some people in the afterlife by being so consumed by guilt and shame by what they had done that they couldn't let themselves embrace new life. The only way out is by being helped. Pulled out from damnation through a sense of true communion.
    Love is the very core of Heaven.

    A great example within our culture. I would also recommend the devil character portrayed in the last episode of Netflix's The Fall of the House of Usher. There is a scene when the Devil (disguised as a woman) visits the two original Usher siblings and makes them an offer. That scene in the bar between the three of them is one of the most accurate ways that the Devil tries to ensnare us.
