Anything by a lefthander like Pazhani Pillaival, Alwin kallicharan, David Gower, John Mcenroe, Saurav Ganguly is Grace personified. A delight to watch. Good to watch you opening up on the intricacies of pakkavaadyam artistes. That too thavil nadaswara vidwans need lo of recognition.
I have had the good fortune to attend number of concerts of Pazhani accompanying Madurai Mani Iyer in 1950s and even today when I think of it tears roll down from eyes. Those days belong to t he golden era when the greatest Maha Maha vidwans adorned the stage of Carnatic music starting from the Margadarshi Ariyakudi, Chembai, Chowdiah ,Palghat Mani Iyer and other stalwarts.Purest unadulterated , traditiona music was the order of those days. They are gone for ever.
Your mention of Ramanathapuram MN Kandasamy Pillai brought out all the memories of my guru Ramanathapuram MN Ganesha Pillai, his elder brother. I remember seeing him visit his brother several times.
Namaste sir, Pazhani S Pillai sir was an impeccable mridangam artist ... Very great.. I am also a big fan of GNB sir and I have also watched the video clip of "Yochana" repeatedly multiple times and the movement he and GNB sir made... Especially the trio leaves us in ecstasy..
Huge respect for your work Sanjay. We have met few times in Sydney, you may not remember . I am still waiting for your comment on TMK and MMA decision to award (undeserved ) SKN to him . I expect you, being a great Vidhwan and who had been honoured with the same in the past, to stand for dharma and our divine music.
What Raja Ravi Varma was to painting was Pazhani Subramania Pillai for Mrudangam. Never before and never after him was there such a brilliant genius like him. His percussion phrases articulated every syllable of a krithi's lyrics while accompanying every concert which added values of both aesthetics and enhancements. The synchronisation of his both hands was unique to him. The gumkis emanated from his Mrudangam reminded the cooing of a pigeon while the farans effervesed from his left hand complimented his gumkis to produce a wholesome experience of both an exalted bliss & ecstasy.
Excellent. You brought out the greatness of Palani Subramania Pillaival beautifully. People who have listened to him live would have been very fortunate. 🙏👍
Very happy to listen to these anecdotes on those days Vidhwans' Vidhwath, very unfortunate that we are unable to get to hear their recordings as the technology hadn't advanced but enjoy your descriptions about all those Vidhwans genius renditios.Thank you. Namaskaram.Bharath Mathaki Jai 🇮🇳🙏 with that note...
Arjuna of mahabharat was known as savyachasi which means left hander. Palani subramania pillai also called as subbudu in those days was also an excellent gangira player and played gangira along with palakkad mani iyer on mridangam on some occasions.
Sir iam one of a relative to Palani Subramaniya Pillai my grandfather used to do arrangement for Bangalore SriRamaNavami concerts at sheshadripuram school I wasn't born at that time in 1961 he played in my parents reception for Allathur Brothers
Thanks for this amazing channel. From your channel my appreciation of carnatic music keeps growing. The most significant is the learning on how to appreciate carnatic music. Thankful for your anecdotes, story telling and overall your music.
FYI, Sri Palani belong to Puthukottai style of Mridangam playing which is ancient Tamil tradition of music with Tavil elements. Where as Tanjore bhani is more of North Indian influence with more meetu chappu and light on Mathematics. Just 2 different styles. CS Murugapoopathy sir also belongs to Puthukottai bhani
Sanjay Sir every episode is a classic! This note is special as it abounds with your knowledge and love of Carnatic music it’s nuances each word rightfully chosen and delivered with such enthusiasm it makes one feel we are walking the talk !! God bless🙏
Hi Sir, Yet another request from me. If you can talk more about Thiruvalangadu Sundaresa Iyer. I am his great grandson. It's inspiring to listen when you keep mentioning about him. You are the one of very few who keeps mentioning about Thiruvalangadu Sundaresa Iyer. Thanks so much 🙏🙏🙏.
Coincidence or whatever, I had similar reaction when palani sir's change of nadai in anupallavi after a 2 second break. Felt as if there was more grip to the kaalapramanam, thereby making GNB more comfortable & take it from there.Great observation sanjay sir. I was also reminded of a radio concert of MMI, chowdiah, palani where he did the same for abogi piece manasu nilpa.
Raconteur extraordinary... looking forward to few snippets of Chartered Accountancy (oblique reference in this posting Chartered Accountancy Day!)foray and stint. Thanks a lot for the enthralling bountiful bonanza a plenty .
When you say “Lefty” in Golf, the name that jumps up is Phil Mickelson. In other sports: in cricket batting, I think it is Brian Lara; in cricket bowling, I would pick between Wasim Akram and Bishen Bedi; in tennis it is without a doubt Rafa Nadal. Similarly, we can add Palani Subramania Pillai in the annals of classic south paws.
Nice stories! Loved the way you introduced the great mridangist by talking about world left handers day. I heard the recording by gnb that you mentioned in the video and it was quite nice to hear. Waiting for the excerpts of the Sanjay Sabha live concert on 14th April 2022
Another fascinating tribute to a Carnatic great and genius from another Carnatic great and genius. Thoroughly enjoy and appreciate these videos, Sir. Please keep them coming. Wasn't Sri Palani Sir one of the earliest pioneers and exponents of the Pudukottai style of Mridangam playing 🙏🙏 ? Also may be you should invite other musicians to pay tribute to you in the On that note style 😀.

Great video Sanjay sir. It's really wonderful to know about Palani. Shows you have done your research well. Plus you have been supported by many disciples of Palani and disciples of Sri. M.N.K (my guru as well). My uncle Late Sri. M.V. Udayshankar also played a few concerts for you maybe in your early days.
@@sanjaysubmusic so nice to get a reply back Sanjay sir. No worries at all. Please continue your great work both on the concert platform and also off of it. You bring together such wonderful anecdotes, creativity and memorabilia in your "On that Note" production. 🙏🙏🙏
This is a small excerpt from a concert of Sri M A Kalyanakrishna Bhagavathar with Sri Lalgudi & Palani Sri M Subramania Pillai. Young Trichy Sankaran (18 yrs!) plays the second mridangam. This had been recorded on an 8 mm film camera. No other video devices were available then (1960) ruclips.net/video/Z1Lfh8b6KI0/видео.html
I heard someone saying that the pakkavadhyam artists comprises or adjusts to the main singer or instrumentists to make it PAKKA-VADHYAM to be blissful to listeners.

Point well made regarding personality making way for music. It would be even better if Mr Subramanyam also follows it...

Savyasachi (note the spelling) actually means ambidextrous - can play with left as well right hand equally well.
Wonderful to hear the passionate artist.
Stay blessed.
My earliest recollection of Palani playing was in 1952/1953 during Rama Navami concert in Bangalore.I was too young to understand his genius
