Thanks for fishing Freeport Jetties. Guys like me appreciate what you do as well as your honesty. It's refreshing to see guys like you and your dad help guys like me.
Down south of Corpus Christi the regulation for trout since 2010 freeze has been 15” 5 fish limit we never got back to 10 trout limit. We got the 3 trout over 16” after last freeze and now went back yo 3 trout at 25” 1 trout allow over 20”.
I disagree. I’m happy they lowered it down to 3. I normally catch one or two on a good day. In the future there will be more fish since people can’t keep as many.
I get the idea behind it. Especially when you consider the fact that guides can go out on two trips a day and haul in about 45 trout. I do get taking it down to 3. But making that whole new slot for them is where I start scratching my head. Lots of fish that are now too big going back in the water just to die.
@@RGCfishingg the new slot is to protect the best breeding stock. Those 20 inch and over fish and the prime DNA to keep going. They are producing the most offspring with the best genetics. Thays the reason behind the slot change. A 30 isn't producing offspring anymore. The change was based on that. If people don't start getting with it and understanding the impact on the fishery, wait until red fish will be a 1 fish limit or purely a tag system. It's not far off and has been brought up.
Wow, that's crazy! I've always made an effort to release 20-inchers; it's just something I like to do. And I had no idea that fish over 30 inches stop breeding. That kind of makes me feel better about seeing that dead one. But they definitely need more game wardens out at the jetty because a lot of folks aren't following the new regs.
I'm not a Lure Guy but at the Jetties? If there's Specs out there? They will smoke the Texas Chicken Corky's & the Pink Mirror Lures. I've been out there & people were using shrimp or finger mullet & not catching & we smoke em on those lures. We go during the week days, not many people out. But, it's not always, some days they like the shrimp. If they hit the shrimp, they'll hit a Corky & they swim right below the surface.
I’m with you. The new regs sucks BUT I understand why. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lawmakers will introduce a closure for Speckled Trout during a specific month in the near future due to the influx of fisherman. In 2023, there were 2.1 million fishing licenses sold in Texas compared to 1.2 million in 2019.
Bruh Christian - The “best spot” to fish the jetty is the channel side by the weather tower 😉😉. I with you on the new limit. I still remember the 10 trout a day limit a few years back. Then dropped to 5 and now 3. I’m okay with the daily limit but the slot size needs to change.
Most fisherman believe the myth that the large /older trout are your breeders , in any species on earth it's the juveniles that are the main breeders and that's true for fish as well , next time your out and about notice how many 50 plus year olds are dragging their own children around , zilch and if they have any young ones their probably Grandchildren , I regularly have 4 Grandchildren with me , but I stopped having my own years ago !
What about 20 - 25” ? I know the real big ones are pretty much done breeding. I just like to let them live as sort of a respect thing. Just a real nice fish.
Yea. I personally don’t mind the number of fish going down to 3. I never really kept 5 anyway. But with them making anything over 20” illegal is where I don’t really understand.
I agree that new law sucks. I only get to fish the coast 5 days a year. I fish the CCA Star Tournament, while there and trout were my best chance to win something. With the new regulations they dropped trout so I'm pretty much sunk.
The limits have been heavily discussed and srudied for a few years now. Theres gill net studies, surveys, partner research from places like the Hart institue. All pointing to a dwindling population. Its not just the fish, its the oyster, shrimp, croaker...and intense pressure like never before. They are a very finite resource. Past inaction on protecting the resource got it to this point. I haven't heard a logical argument against it yet. The folks I hear complaining now, I didnt see or hear them at any discussion or scoping meeting or being part of the process when the data was presented and discussed or when possible solutions were brought up. It was a public discussion for 2 years. Those complaining now are just misinformed, willfully ignorant, or just resistant to change no matter what. We set records yearly on the number of fishing licenses, boats on the water, guides, and tackle sold. Theres not a secrion of the bay thats inaccessible anymore.
It's good to know that they have solid research behind it. I'm not super invested in the limits myself; never really keep a full one anyway. If the fish need a break, they need a break. Can't argue with science.
Science can be argued with better science. Unfortunately those opposing the change are using emotional arguments. In a regular fishing situation, not a tournament, specks have about an 80% survival rate. Hook location makes a big difference in survival. But, if 10 fish are caught and kept over 20 inches, that's a 100% mortality rate. If all those fish are released, even on a bad day, it's not even a 50% mortality rate. It is impossible to have more fish over 20 die now.
For the total population I completely agree, but the way these fish get handled at the jetties is brutal. I’m talking fish getting flipped up on the rocks and straight body slammed. Then dragged across the rocks to a measure board. I saw so many trout belly up just that one day. But this situation is a small sample size of a big fishery.
I agree it's sad the lack of respect people have for what they're doing. You can see it in how they handle the fish and the trash they leave behind. Yall always show a great deal of respect for the the fish and surrounding. What yall do helps show those folks how to be better.
I knew this was going to be a problem in the surf. I personally think it had to do with the guides down south complaining that the regs weren't even across the state and they were losing business to the upper coast guides since they could keep more fish. The freeze didn't kill as many upper coast fish as it did lower coast. Somebody called their state congressman and next thing ya know new regs. Just my opinion. One thing I do know is once regs go into effect they NEVER get relaxed. We will never ever again get to keep flounder during the "run". Most people don't care and that's a problem as well. We've been fishing for Redfish using the same old regs since the 90's. I think they've recovered plenty and then some. The only way to fix it is to complain to your local congressman. But no one's going to do that. The only other option is to go on your guided trips in Louisiana where the limits are more relaxed. Sadly it would hurt guide business here forcing them to complain to the politicians. It's a sucky situation anyway you look at it. I'd be real interested to see what the latest gill net surveys showed. And I mean 2024 info not 2021. Peace!
Yea, I don’t know how to feel about it. I would like to see some evidence that the fish are really going through it. People pay good money for fishing license, bait, gas, guided trips, etc. just to be told they get to keep peanuts. I just hope they have a good reason to do it and not some guys complaining to local government like you said.
Population dynamics are a thing. Science and mathematics can help explain everything around you, including the fish population now and the future, hence all the regulations.
I'm okay with the number of keepers but the size should have never been changed. And I guess the reason I'm okay with the number of keepers is because I do fish in Louisiana as well. But I will only keep with I think I will eat, unless I have family and friends who do not fish but want some I'll keep extra and give to them. I've had luck using articials under a cork when I can't get shrimp.
I had a house in Surfside for 10 years and fished that jetty countless times. Certain demographics of people didn't give a flying crap about limits or length restrictions. Saw 100's and hundreds of violations and never saw a game warden other than sitting in the parking lot on the phone. That place needed a hard shakedown. I mean hard, it was disgusting.
Disagree if you hear stories from the 80s they would catch 100 pound stringers all the time now we are lucky to catch a limit. If we keep going with taking taking taking and all the guides using croaker in a few years we will have no specs at all. I would like my son to be able to catch specs when he’s older so let’s do our part take 1 or 2 for dinner and throw the rest back
@@reezustheone721 no need to apologize!! Before posting this I was pretty uninformed on the speckled trout situation. I think after reading some of the comments and looking into it further there’s a lot of research that supports our trout population taking a hit. So even tho I’m not happy about the regulation changes I understand that it’s something that had to be done.
Yea it stinks for a lot of folks. I live pretty close to the water and go just to go a lot of the time. But I understand for a lot of guys it’s hard to justify heading all the way to Galveston for 3 fish.
It sucks that 30 inch trout probably died, but the ocean still gets to eat. I do agree that more 20+ inch trout may die than be saved because of this new regulation.😕 In other news, I'm so glad you finally got a damn haircut.😂😂
Now they lower the bag limit. Who would go fishing as much. Lowering people buying licenses and bait. Lowering the economy. Fishing is one of the economy that make the most money on taxes. Now that it lower who would by live bait as often. Bait camp are losing money. I for one say raise the size limit and keep the bag limit to 5 or 10 depending on season. For example spring time up the size limit and lower the bag. Summer lower the size but keep the bag high.
It’s complicated. Since posting I’ve learned a lot about the reasoning behind the limit / regulation changes. A lot of research backs the decision(so I’m told) I’ve yet to do any research my self but I get my information from a trusted source. It’s definitely upsetting to have the Gov tell us what we can and can’t do but at the end of the day it’s to protect the fish!
Maybe try some shrimp scent on your bait. s you are not at all confident at what you’re doing. Head games will hold you back at anything you do especially fishing.🤔🤔🤔
I just fish a lot 🤷♂️ You get a feel for when they want lures and when they don’t. Also 2:06 I’m putting shrimp scent 😂😂. I’ve caught them on lures before they just haven’t been wanting anything but live shrimp!
Yea it’s crazy to see how they have cracked down on the fishing so hard in such a short time. When I first started fishing there was a ten trout limit and flounder run was always open.

are these trout rules just for the saltwater or both salt and fresh water bro ?
Just for speckled trout. Idk where you gonna find find is fresh water but if you did somehow I assume same rules & regulations would apply.

It's not really worth it to walk out to the end of the Jetty for 3 trout either. Dumb rule.
It’s the drive for me. I don’t mind to be honest, but that’s cause I rarely keep a full limit. Mainly just fish for the fun of it/ videos.
