      Lets be honest here. Yeah, I would be excited for a Metroid movie. But as you already stated if Nintendo wants to honor the story of Samus correctly they WILL have to go a darker route which they most likely wouldn't be able to go if they want to make it family friendly (and there is also the fact that Metroid was based off of the Alien series) So my point is: IF there will be a Metroid movie they will have to go into an R18 rating with it because imo it will have to have quite some violence and dark scenes in it so they can really make Samus shine in the spotlight of the Metroid story

      I think it will keep the story elements but it will be more like a PG-13 movie. If they were smart they would make it a hard R just to prove the level of range they can do and make money on.

    If metroid gets adapted into a movie it will not be as dark as the manga but probaly in the same tone as the games. I think Nintendo understands that metroid is one their darker franchises. What makes me think this is how metroid dread was advertised, it was certainly not presented like kid friendly game. However I wonder how Samus would interact with characters like Mario, Peach, Yoshi (etc) if we get a smash bros movie

      @ObrigadaJim Год назад +4

      A tone like Alien, but you mean the first or the second movie? Cause their completely different movies with very distinct tones, I think alien 2 more fast passed action based tone fits better with a Metroid movie than alien 1 with its more thriller slow horror tone

    • @brichan1851
      @brichan1851 Год назад +5

      @@ObrigadaJim I would pace it more in an ominous way like the first Alien. Samus is alone throughout most of the series, like Ripley. Aliens (the second film), while great, is an action film with multiple characters. Samus’ adventures are always solitary and lonely ones.
      A Metroid film would be difficult to do, but the right people behind it could make it a masterpiece.
      Alien is the basis for the Metroid series, and a movie based on the game needs to remember that while straddling the line between imitation and inspiration.

  • @Scuttlest

    If a Metroid movie gets made, they definitely won’t go into that much detail about Samus’s parents. At most maybe a small flashback of her mother disappearing in an explosion of Ridley’s breath and a quick shot of her father sacrificing himself.
    The language thing really isn’t a problem. Just keep Samus’s mouth and everyone else’s mouth fairly G-rated (at most, just a few damns, hells, and craps). It’s not like heavy language is integral to the Metroid experience. I believe Prime 3 was the only game that had profanity in it, and even then it was iirc just one single utterance of the word ‘damn’.
    Really, the worst case scenario is that a Metroid movie applies the typical ‘strong independent woman’ formula to Samus, and she spends the movie behaving like an abusive narcissist.

    It is my understanding that the manga is cannon, but I don't think sticking to the manga lore matters nearly as much as being consistent with the in game lore. What concerns me more is if they would be able to get the feel of Metroid, where the story is often told through the environment rather than directly, into a movie, where the story would have to be more in the forefront. Personally, I think other franchises would work a lot better than Metroid.

    When you think about it, doing a Zelda movie first would probably be a good idea to progressively transition from something that would be very kid friendly like Mario to something much more adult and dark like Metroid cause Zelda is like a middle ground. It's more kid friendly but with a more mature image and universe. I would choose another studio than Illumination studio too to make a Metroid movie. But even if it's true that Illumination is more used to do more kid friendly movies, I've seen over the years it doesn't necessarely mean much. We're often surprised many artists can switch from one style to another cause they already have experience with different things or are just skilled enough to do something very different. So even if it makes perfect sense in theory that it could be hard to create a satisfying movie for Metroid from them, I think it actually doesn't mean that much.

  • @AranFever
    @AranFever Год назад +9

    I think that the writers of the manga took liberties to make it dark simply because they could, but I don't feel that same darkness should be carried over into the films. Typically writers write dialogue based on who they are as people and what values they hold, too. So, if I was given the high honor of writing/directing the Metroid saga, I would stay true to the source material, but adapt the stories and universe to be the next Star Wars. You don't need fowl language to be a great success -- the OG Star Wars films (and even the prequals) are evidence of that. In that regard, I would write Samus to hold true to this seemingly lost moral value of keeping words wholesome and not being flippant -- Samus would be a much better, actual role model for young women who look up to these types of characters. You'll still see her overcome very hard life issues, while showing self-control. But don't get me wrong, I think each film would be a PG-13 because of the things the audience would be subject to (but not due to language). I'd want to see kids and adults lining up to see these movies too, just like Star Wars.

    The only thing I care about if they ever do a Metroid movie is that they (Nintendo) don't allow the writers/production staff to go the modern Hollywood route and just default to making Samus a third wave feminist girlboss lesbian Captain Marvel Mary Sue copy with no struggles or issues to overcome. I think a PG-13 treatment can be done well. There can be plenty of intense human on alien violence without having to drop f bombs. Id prefer not to have any of these movies made, but I hear the new Mario movie is actually pretty okay. As a long time fan I think a movie would suck, some video games are very good because you get to experience the game world in an interactive way.
    A movie would be filled with none-sense dialogues just like other M and Prime 3 and the other half of the movie Samus needing help from others to beat space pirates that try again to get Chozo tech or clone metroids.
    The only thing I would love to see is an animated short movie about the alien enviroments from Zebes, SR-388 and Dark Aether that would be sick, again the main problem with some video games adaptations to movies is that you can't have a 2 hours movie with a silent character exploring a world, just look at the movie adaptations from Silent Hill and Resident Evil they are hot garbage compared to the games and do not communicate the true essence of what made the game so popular (experiencing its world in an interactive way).

    I've often thought about how Nintendo could make a metroid movie and do the source material justice. I feel that the only way to create a properly tense atmosphere combined with the quick pace it would require, it would need to be done in a first person style, like the prime games. That's the only way to really capture the immersion and feelings required to pull this off. I remember watching a film some years ago called hardcore Henry. It was a bit over the top and goofy, but the way that film was shot in an entirely first person perspective combined with the fast paced action, I think it would be perfect for metroid. It would just need to sprinkle in some scarier elements and BAM, there's your horror based metroid film right there. It CANNOT be made to cater to children. I also think the idea of an NCU culminating in a smash movie is a bit of a stretch. It works in game because you can afford the idea of stripping back lore and gameplay elements from individual characters to make them fit. It doesn't matter. But to do it as a general universe by reducing elements of characters down to be more family friendly would kill a lot of the magic they bring to the table I think. Heck, even Zelda stories have their darker twists and connotations that I think would dull any film if it was more of a family experience. I dunno, maybe I have a strange take on it.

  • @not12listen
    @not12listen Год назад +2

    100% agreed with your comments and assessment.
    Either it will be heavily toned down to the point of being as family friendly as a Mario movie or it will be incredibly violent (ie. original Evil Dead or Terminator) that Nintendo simply would not go through with it. Nintendo has proven itself to go out of its way to protect its "family friendly" image, and putting out an R rated Metroid movie would be the polar opposite.
    Three other items that would concern me about a Metroid film, but also one hopeful direction.
    The music. Metroid is almost completely an isolated situation. I worry that a bunch of poppy/upbeat/happy or generic current music would be placed throughout the movie - compare the original Metroid on NES to the Metroid Prime. Poppy and upbeat music does not correctly or effectively convey the isolated scenario nor the dire situation at hand - poppy/upbeat music would give the false impression that everything is going to be ok, and that no real struggle will occur. If they were to re-compose some of the original NES music or leverage an artist like Brian Lustmord or Graeme Revell, then I could see the musical atmosphere being treated properly.
    Samus as a person/character. With rare exception, Samus is effectively or entirely on her own. Trying to force dialogue where it isn't naturally present would really hurt the atmosphere of the Metroid series. I worry that they would purposely have 1 or 2 people alongside her, to help her and to give a device by which to inject dialogue. I think it'd be best to use Samus' internal dialogue (ie. Dune) to fill in the story details. Her conversing with Ridley or ADAM and similar would be a great way to do storytelling, with flashbacks to fill in critical details (ie. Ridley's part in her parents' deaths, etc). Samus is also very self-reliant and headstrong - I worry that they would show her as a timid/meek/scared person, despite all of her history as a bounty hunter and having watched her parents die, faced death & incredible odds multiple times over the years.
    Samus as a symbol. I worry that, for the sake of attempting to appeal to a wider audience, that either Samus would have scenes that make her into a sex object (ie. a toned down version of the Street Fighter Animated Movie Chun Li shower scene) or a love interest would be forcibly introduced, to give her not just the conflict going on, but also someone that has romantic interest in her that pulls on those emotional heart strings.
    Having re-watched the fan made Metroid: The Sky Calls with Jessica Chobot, I have to say, if a film were done similar to that, I would be thrilled to see a full Metroid like that.

      I don’t see why Nintendo can’t make a mature film. They have a lot of mature games on their platform. They have the recent Doom, for example.
      I am not a Metroid fan and have only gotten a little bit into Super Metroid, but I think it could work well as an R-rated horror movie. Not a gory movie or something, but a movie that slowly makes you anxious through the desolate environment and a mounting sense of urgency. Maybe it doesn’t even have to be R-rated and maybe it doesn’t even have to be horror, but it’s high stakes and you can feel the pressure mounting with some small releases from dealing with an immediate threat or finding a new area.

    The manga is official, but I don't see the manga as "primary" canon. It's "secondary" canon. Most of the story, with some differences, was pulled into the other games, like Prime (where a less graphic summary can be found in the instruction book as well) and Other M. While the game designers have used it for plot elements, I don't see the movie's writers having to use the manga wholesale for a future film. They can easily pull the elements from the manga, through the various games' stories that used it.

    What they should do is nix the Smash Bros. Initiative, if that is their goal; not everything has to be Marvel. Next, they should give the project to DreamWorks, who could produce a film that can elude to darker themes while maintaining a family friendly veneer. (based off their work on the latest Puss n Boots film, I believe they can accomplish this.)

    out of all Nintendo characters, samus is actually the easiest to adapt to a proper movie, she doesn't have the baggages and complex story line, which gives the screen writer plenty room to maneuver, the game has 4 elemental theme all combined into one ,golden fleece, monster in a house, buddy love( between samus and metroid),and rites of passage, these categories are the oldest stories ever told, with proper action and creative violence and gore, you can actually make great personal growing story in a action horror setting. first you give young naive samus a goal to go to a foreign planet or spaceship, what should've been a breezy mission turned into a horrific adventure,.First the horrific monster ambushed samus for seemingly no clear reason, nearly killed her. Then the spaceship seems to have a life of its own, sets samus up every step of the way, took away her power and turn samus's cocky-flashy style agianst her own. Turned out the monster and spaceship are not on the same side, the monster is also trying to survive. In battle between monster and spaceship, samus lost most of her power, the monster is also badly wounded, after a quite and short respite they quickly found out they have to cooperate with each other, using each other's abilities to fight the ship and gain each other's power back...finally the mother brain revealed herself as the master mind behind the haunted spaceship, they beat the mother brain, turned out the monster is metroid, then friendship build alone the battle let samus decide to give up the bounty let metroid go before federation catches it. from cold hearted solo bounty hunters samus has become more compassionate,trusting and mature through the adventure. of course this movie will have a lot of CGI, but I would recommend more practical effects to give it more grounds, showing close shots of inner mechanism of samus ability as signature shots to remind audience the immense power she holds. the monster must have unique design that matches its ability to interact with spaceship or planet infrastructure itself, sort like jack chan in a Ikea, not just for cheap shock value, after all, the game is all about well designed boss and creative battle tactics. the action shouldn't be super hero like, which took the audience out of relatability, it should be something a amazing stunt man can do, only enhanced on physical-possible level.

      also some humor between the metroid and samus is also welcomed, gives them both humanity that audience can relate to, contrast to the mysteriousness of the ship and the utter cruelty of the mothership, and instutionaliztion of the galactic federation.

    Here's a comment section pitch: I think Metroid Prime 2 would be the best game to base a movie off of.
    And you don't necessarily need Metroid Prime 1 for context. Prime 2 kinda works on its own. Standalone.
    And what's really great, is you could have an awesome B Plot about the Federation Toopers and their fight for survival. Told through video logs, and dialogue from other characters, like the Luminoth or maybe the Space Pirates.
    And it works to put the viewer in the shoes of Samus who's trying to uncover the whole thing... JUST like the game!!
    That cutscene of the Federations Last Stand against the Ing, is one of the most epic cutscenes in all of Metroid! Make a movie out of that!
    There are so many details in the world to scan, that you could draw from!
    The Federation Troopers are working with outdated equipment and bad leadership.
    The Space Pirates are opening portals to Dark Aether in the persuit of power, and dealing with the ramifications.. like corruption... Oh! and Dark Samus!
    And The Luminoth have largely sealed themselves away in Cryo Sleep to not get corrupted. Leaving only holograms, as a last cry for help.. Praying that a hero will emerge!
    Samus realizes she has to destroy this shadow entity corrupting Aether. Not just because she's stuck. But also because it could consume all life in the universe!
    ... And because the Luminoth remind Samus of the Chozo...

    There should be two interpretations of Samus on film, like Batman, there should be a live-action Metroid movie and an animated version of Samus that would show-up on a Super Smash Bros. universe.
    The Metroid movie shouldn't be "dark and gritty" in violence, but in theme and situations. Like the Nolan Batman movies, all dealt with dark themes but not necessarily in violence, that way it can be rated pg-13, which is fine to me tbh.
    Live-action versions of Metroid and F-Zero would be so badass imo, F-Zero should use influences from movies like Speed Racer, Star Wars Podrace's from ep.1, and an underdog styled sports movie.

    One way they can go for the story is have the beginning at least be while Samus is on R&R after the events of the Baby Metroid's death (outside of her parents death that was the other big event in her life that still affects her). This would allow us to see a side of her that isn't in the games. Maybe even work in some of the manga elements like her fears and anxieties. But then she finds out about the Space Pirates causing trouble in the area that will eventually lead to the more action elements that are like the games.

    You can't have a Metroid movie that has the tone setting and lore of the games and make it a tie-in product to set up a Super Smash Bros movie.
    ...
    Because Super Smash Bros isn't part of the Metroid lore, or the lore of any of the games involved for that matter.
    It's one or the other.
    Do you want a gritty dark sci-fi movie that feels like the games but it might not be seen by too many people or a cheesy space adventure that's more marketable because you want Nintendo to be the next Marvel for some reason?
    Hell even Nintendo themselves never bothered to explain why these characters are interacting with each other in Super Smash Bros, other than "They're actually toys being played with by a kid using their imagination." because any explanation other than that would be ridiculous.
    I don't need to know how Kirby, Sonic or Pikachu fit into the Metroid lore because the simple answer is... They don't.

Prime 2, prime 3, return of Samus, Super Metroid, other m can be a flashback in the intro of Fusion where we see Adams demise. Then finally to cap off the narrative of Metroids and the X Metroid Dread. (I will replace this comment once we have definitive confirmation of Prime 4s timeline placement.)

I'm afraid it might be too kid friendly, while I'd like Nintendo to do a little more with it, even in the games. Sometimes in both Zelda and Metroid, I get the feeling that Nintendo wamts to make more mature qnd violent things, but that something is holding them back.
    Like yeah, let's make monsters that get decapitated when you shoot at them, let's strangle the protahonist to death, let's give them paranoia about the zombie that could be waiting for you in the next room with a shotgun and ice beam, but a visible wound? Personally I'd prefer a PG-13 movie. If I wanted an R rated Metroid movie, I would watch the Alien movies. I think the movie would probably be similar to Other M: the movie will reference killing of her parents by Ridley, but not show gory details.
    The comic book movies change their source material for the movie, a prime (pun intended) example is the numerous Batman movies we've gotten over the years. There all different with tone, story, & origin, but they work because they feel like Batman. The Marvel movies change their lore from the comics.
    Simply put, I don't expect 100% lore accuracy to the games/manga, as long as it feels like a Metroid movie similar to the animated Super Mario Bros movie, I'll be happy.

    I don't want a Metroid movie, because I'm concerned that it will be a watered down mess for mass consumption. Although the second part of your question is interesting, because Nintendo could "split the difference" so-to-speak and make it a PG-13 film. This way they can stay true enough to the lore while capturing the casual movie goer that hasn't had any previous exposure to the Metroid franchise.

    Feels like Nintendo/Illumination should get established first with lighter material before diving into the deep dark. With some of the recent movie releases as of this date, there's substantial evidence that staying truer to the source material is what will win and keep fans, while deviating from it extensively will alienate your fanbase and ruin your brand, and if Nintendo can get well established first with more lighter material like Super Mario Brothers, they may have a better chance later on with more adult material.

    I'm more concerned with a different factor, though what that factor is will depend on whether a Metroid movie is live-action or requires voice actors.
    If live-action, hopefully Nintendo has learned from the mistakes that were made with the live-action Mario movie (even with those mistakes, it's still an occasional guilty pleasure for me to watch, but there's no denying that it could have been much better than it ended up being).
    If voice actors are needed, get voices that actually fit the parts. Every voice in the Mario trailers felt so far off from the character being voiced that I have to wait until I can watch the Mario movie at home with English subtitles (and either Japanese voices or flat-out muted sound). I don't want the same to be true for a Metroid movie that needs voice actors.
    If this was anybody other than Nintendo, I'd also be worried about the social justice agenda that the rest of Hollywood is pushing, and that may someday become a concern with Nintendo as well, but I'm glad that Nintendo is, at least at present, a safe haven from that bull.

      Making everything eerie could solve the problem, with subtle noticeable changes when you return to an area. Camping out at night in a hostile area all by yourself would allow for some calmer moments while also having danger at the back of your mind, and it could be a place for Samus to unload her thoughts. Does Samus have multi-day missions?
      I think the movie would work well as a suspense / thriller. Keep exploration a bit faster-paced until you meet something that stumps you. Keep some ever-present danger that grows larger as time passes. That’s what the first Pikmin game excels at. Have a bit of a slow mounting madness that risks exploding into emotion. What is her breaking point?
      The Mario Movie lacked in plot and character development, but this movie should have no problem with it.
