SMITE Medusa's Deathmatch Was Not What I Hoped For (Pros & Cons)

- In the most recent SMITE Patch, HiRez introduced a new temporary adventure mode: Medusa's Deathmatch, a 3v3v3 map. bit.ly/2hjNaPT As exciting as the mode initially sounded to me, it turned out very differently from what I expected. The mode rewards vulturing, turtling, general killstealing and passive play over aggressive or objective play. In this video, I'll be discussing the pros and cons of the mode.

The storm should negate all healing
Teams that don’t engage for long periods of time should ping on the map after awhile
Add bans before the game begins even if it’s like 2 bans per team or two teams do 3 bans
These changes and a few others will be a step in the right direction and will make the game mode more enjoyable.
Chest boosters will give said chest to the team at the end of the game

The reason I usually don't like playing Adventures where you can freely pick a team to fight against another team is that I'll see the same gods over and over and over and over and over again. I mean, with Corrupted Arena and Hel's Inner Demon Arena there were Tyrs, Hercules, Xing Tians, Sobeks, and Da Jis every single game. It got to the point where it was like "Oh, yeah, it's not getting boring or annoying seeing the same exact gods being used at all! Such quality and diverse gameplay!" No offense to this game mode, I'm sure some people genuinely enjoy it, but I'm happy that I didn't waste my time on it. It would have more or less been the same scenario, except now with even more healing! Yay!

Scott Buzz Honestly? That doesn’t sound bad. In my opinion, Hi-Rez should just do away with adventures altogether and focus on... literally anything and everything else about their game. They just aren’t necessary and MOTD are sufficient enough.
Ajax and Fish confirmed that the number of scrolls you get from playing are bugged currently and that the grind to unlock everything is the same as corrupted arena.

It was an ok grind, I played like, I don't know, 15 matches and I could get one of the high prizes, now I've played 10 matches and I have 500 scrolls which is not enough even for the lower prize

If we want this as a permanent mode, have a hit timer, you have to hit enemy gods before the time runs out. Wreckfest has a hit timer during its demolition derbies mode so you're not just driving around avoiding everyone till there's a few cars left
Pros:when you get a fun and fair 3 v 3 v 3 match, cons:when one team hides and waits for the other 2 to fight and then comes and wins, when there's an aphro in every match, when there are bugs that won't let you use skills nor even use autos, when one of the team focuses the weaker team over and over again, when one team gets an early kill his chances of wining are 90%,the stupid low amount of prizes I've won more than once 3-0-0 and get 18 scrolls, etc etc etc
My whole thing is, there are already loads of issues with the game as it is, adding in a new mode that will need it's own fixes and balancing seems like a bad plan imo. Especially when one of the main issues is matchmaking and a strained player population, splitting those numbers up more seems like the worst idea possible. You don't bring in new players by having matchmaking pair them against pros and adding a new mode that just makes queues longer and guarantees unfair matchups.

I wonder if Hi-Rez patched something since you posted this, because I had a completely different experience from you. First of all, the center buff, is not useless. It's hugely important. It's a stacking power buff. I found that out the hard way when a full tank Chaac had 450 physical power because his team was 3 tanks and just zoned everyone away from the center. It's also a really great game mode for intelligent builds. If you know what items to build in what situations, it's extremely rewarding/punishing in this game mode - which I think is very fun. I also like that you can employ different comps and different strategies and still win. You can camp the center with tanks and stack the power buffs or you can play a sustain team and go for picks or you can build a burst comp. We played seven games last night and won all seven games, including one where I DC'd in the first round. The reason that was possible is because of the dynamic between three teams and being able to pick people off. There's just so many refreshing strategies and tactics you can employ in a 3 team dynamic. Like for example, team 1 wins round 1 so in round 2 team 2 and 3 team up on them and work together to eliminate them...or they could betray each other half way through...I know...I really, really enjoyed this game mode. I've never played smite for rewards or cosmetic stuff though, but I could see how that would be really frustrating if that's your goal. I just want to have a fun, different time. I've been playing 6 years and this is the first thing smite has done that is really refreshing in a long time.
I play on console and my game got bugged right after this mode. Couldn’t use 2/4 skills for half a match,the bottoms themselves weren’t responding, and I know it was the game because my friend I was playing with had the same issue.
Also my scoreboard was still showing Medusa’s deathmatch scheme I could see 3 people’s builds 2 teammates and myself so I couldn’t counter build at all, this bug didn’t go away until I restarted smite.
Has happen to me too, and i would see the " team two won the round" in a conquest mode randomly pooping up, this mode is busting the game really
Me too, using the savage or savage plus controls and cant use my 2nd and 3rd abilities in some games unless I dc and get back into the game when everyone has already gotten gold and xp and can just one shot me
Duke you forgot to mention that if you play ne zha and you ult by the storm the storm would hit you.
Yeah same with Kumbhakarna as well, but those are outliers.
I lost the last fight 1v1 against kumbha with baka because that. Dont ask me why I use bakasura at this gamemode
Reduce the number of bushes on the map, add a relic in on a low CD like 25seconds that can show enemies hidden in a bush, reducing healing in the mode to make it more effective everyone suffers from 50% anti heal on all healing that isn't picked up, or from relics or potions, make the circle randomly smallen to difference areas, and have medusas mask, show the end loction the to team who secures the buff
Bring this back it was AMAZING
My problem with it is the constant hide and seek matches. My team had to get aggressive with a lot of scaredy cats in this mode.
Hi rez should embrace the customs community, allowing people to just make lobies for these kinds of modes, heck even a return of domination would be nice as a custom mode choice.
Aphrodite and Cerberus are a bit op in this.
The massive power buff that everyone gets eventually adds survivability to the whole team through Aphrodite, highest scaling heal in game and all that, it’s crazy hard to kill an Aphrodite, who can heal a not particularly tanky warrior, and out heal the damage of a whole team.
And Cerberus is not only a counter, but the only one who can come back if one team wipes the other since his heal scales off of THEIR healing. (Plus one extra enemy for passive) Cerberus is tankier than most gods for unjustifiable reasoning.
It’s two gods you basically have to have to win every time. And your last pick is probably a warrior with a self heal because it works well with Aphrodite.
Terribly unbalances when the objectively best team is Aphrodite Cerberus Hercules.
It's fun but I wish there were a few bans.
Kind of sucks that almost all of their adventure modes revolve around "don't go into the insta-kill / damaging spot". I get why they have the sand walls but I think a system similar to Dead by Daylight could have worked. That game has a lot of problems but it handles camping pretty well, if you barely move you'll get a crow above your head that's pretty loud and follows you. If you continue to barely move then you'll get another one for a max of 3. They're loud and the only way to make them stop is to move a bunch until they leave.
I really really enjoy this mod. It is the funniest adventure ever made in Smite and I am willing to play it for a long time unlike the other ones, where i had like 10 games max. And I would like to see this mod permanently, it would be a great addition to Smite, which no game has ever done before. I really don't care if the mod is not balanced. I won a lot of games with all kinds of combos and tactics and even in the games I lost i had fun and furthermore, you have always a reasonable comeback possibility even if you lost the first 3 rounds.
I just miss the loki adventure mode. That was fun for when you just wanted to do something that wasn't pvp and didn't feel like staring at your games and apps wondering what to do.

Quick Opinion from an actual good player. this game mode is fun. this game mode should for the most part only be played as a party of 3. you easily punish healers at all points in the game if you know anything about building. if you see a team hiding u focus them. Buff gives little power but its also super easy to kill so makes sense
All games me and my friends have played have literally been picks from spin the wheel site and we win most games against what low skill players consider op in this game mode
Even better, you can sell items for the same price you bought them for so if you notice you need to counter build, wow look at that, i can switch my entire build to have a pestilence, brawlers, and toxic without losing ANY money
So far the adventure mode has been a ''wait in the grass because loki wants to play alone and will otherwise blame you for losing'' type of deathmatch for me.

AMK with two power buffs and potions on this mod feels like POWER! UNLIMITEEED POWER!
the buff is very strong. it can stack multiple times. and it's easy to do so for the winner team....a mage hitting you with 2 or more stacks of it will be doing scylla's full build ult damage on you despite having only a couple items. and when people think like you and just dont contest it, it's so easy to stack the buff three, even four times, and you have it for the rest of the match....the team that gets to do that, will demolish you.
Morrigan and Kail are banned characters but Morrigan still makes it through.
3v3v3 would be easy, just combine Arena and Joust, 3 lanes, central portal, maybe towers and some spiderwebbing paths between lanes.
Odin so very strong in this game mode. And Hercules just push you into the sand storm
I think the mode is fun, but in X box if you want to switch to another mode you have to restart smite or your bumpers will only work in vgs so you can't cancel abilities or change item pages. Also, the screen that shows you everyone's builds is screwed up and you can only see it in a 3v3v3 format stopping you from viewing 4 players stats. The adventure itself is fun, it does seem grindy which is annoying, but that matches are reasonably quick and if you target a teams healer then it's not too hard to win.

This mode is the most fun to play. Replace siege with this mode would be amazing. It is different and need this for casual players like me and my friends. I'm lvl139 and pretty decent. I love it.
I really like the mode as far as adventures goes. But if they wanted to make it a normal mode it needs a ton of work.
How about instead of a power buff for killing someone, everyone gets Xbalanque type passive effect based on damage dealt? And then for anti-healing and hiding out, put a passive stacking debuff over time that reduces healing received, remove some number of stacks for being on the team that gets a kill, maybe remove a larger amount of stacks for killing the mask?
It wasnt great enough to have it permanently. I don't even catch myself wanting to play it over and over again
Id rather have a 3 team clash type of game. Make it so teams can only progress against one team while only being able to defend against the other on lanes and a chaotic jungle in the middle and i think you have something. Then once one team wipes another make it so the can push there defence lane and rewarded a fire giant buff or something.
I'm happy I only need 10 chest rolls (and 3 of them are the big one). I've played 5 adventures and had a total of 7 trolls or new players.and won 0 times.
A glitch I found is when you don't get any assists. It was frustrating when I built Rage and then got it. I bought the bundle because skins and some chest roles are nice.
The concept is great, but too complicated for players to understand.
The average expected win rate is 33%, so extra scrolls for winning can be frustrating. It might be fun for premades, but sucks for solo queuing players.
Hi rez could get more ideas for this kind of 3 teams matches from wrath of heroes.
It's also seriously punishing if you die early, have a bad team comp or somone DCs, get ready to sit for like 5 minutes spectating other people being a turtle.

My only problem with it is the NEED to get the damage buff, if your team gets the first one your chance of winning increases tenfold.

DukeSloth that is true but the matches I've played have mostly been two teams hiding/fighting while one stacks the buff. It's definitely not as much as a kill but they add up
The pots and power buff stack on top of each other, so if you get it a few times lategame you just stomp lol
I think they should do the scrolls like in the arena with holes or decrease the cost of the chest

I got to round 9 and had to fight a Cerberus as Bacchus near middle objective...got spammed in VGS for losing that one.
I played one match yesterday and I was so mad because I guess it glitched, but it didn’t allow me to level up my abilities till like round 5..
I'm mainly doing it for the Exclusive skins even though it's such a grind.
Honestly I think there just need to be a couple number changes and some quality of life changes, and then it will be great.
The health of the mid objective is stupid, with full power Loki I can activate my 3, then auto once. It is dead. And the power you get from mid and kills seems a bit too strong tbh.
Also, the sand closes in a bit too fast, and there isn't really a warning. Just make a sound 5 seconds before it starts closing in. I have died at least 5 times because I didn't realize it was closing.
Had a game were a Rama was oneshoting the mask
Speaking of bugs I ulted someone with Ne Zha and after I landed I stayed in cc immunity that my ult gives me and I could not attack, use relics, I could not do anything except run around..
I miss the old adventures where you would fight bosses and get loot. I do not enjoy the new adventures as much as the other ones. Hopefully they’ll go back to the other ones
If you want the best way to win then play kumba full tank and stay alive until the last moment... Your pasive kicks in and there is a low chance you can lose
Huh, interesting video and love the points. But at least from my ps4 experience everyone is actually pretty aggressive and fights over the middle consistently. Though the game mode is very glitchy with the scoreboard I'm having fun with it and quite enjoy having weird teams. Also to any one playing. Try morrigan in the death match it's so fun.

I played on ps4 the day it opened. Had a good couple of randoms with me and we won the first 3 games shutting the other teams out. I was awarded a whole 18 scrolls!!! Wooo!!!! There was a mini patch a little bit later and was awarded more scrolls. Just an initial suck.. lol
The center is strong if you farm it and don't get contested as full defence odin I one shotted 5 People late game with just 1 2 combo and a basic

first round seems to last forever in the mode, i had a game earlier were a terra 1v3'd and won because the other 3 had no mana, and won do to the last second in the fog. and yes i do agree the rewards seem to hard to achieve
They should have a bomb on people and if they don't do a certain amount of damage the die. Or if they pick a healer, they immediately start taking dame after leaving spawn.

The fact that winning doesn't reward more than loosing makes trying the game in general useless me afking gaining the same reward as someone who is actually playing seems unfair, but whatever i dig it
I mean I was Achilles and did 1230 damage with a single basic attack with no crit so I think this game mode something else
It is worth to get the buff in the middle but it has too low HP in my opinion

On a serious note though this is another "free to play" event that's not really free to play. I don't have the time to grind 700 matches.
It's another reason why I feel my decision to no longer buy gems is justified.

I played it once and we surprisingly won against a tanky cerberus loki comp and a herc aphro comp with nu wa and chang'e and loki (though our loki wasn't good). But yeah once was enough for me and i didn't play it ever since. Aphro Herc comp is annoying and it was a good thing we had chang'e and i built divine but still...i just don't like it. It got to a point that the later rounds, everyone just camped in the bushes and nobody would move lmao. These adventures have annoying metas that kinda ruin the fun of it and the rewards are not worth it enough for me to sit through each match.

its true about rewards, its down to match length only, so winning or loosing... isn't even worth anything to hirez - its up to players to incentivise themselves? ive had games where people will 2team gang you or just throw to draw the games out for longer. also the price of rewards/ the amount of scrolls earned is OP. ok sure, it has its fun points, and I like the different tactics and so on used, but it does get rather shit rather fast because its not "working" perfectly
My team gets the most reward out of running left or right and surprising the team there, turtling doesn't help the last team cause we wait in the center for them to come out and have huge amounts of power after killing a whole team, healing up, and constantly taking the center buff. I was Xbal and had (something crazy like) 450 power but had only built boots and pt1. beat stick. I think a number of the arguments in this video are flawed because of how you play and how you reacted to how others played. Example: If we had a team or two turtling we would go after them and fight them where they didn't expect and 9 times out of 10 we won the fight cause they didn't want to fight. If we had 2 teams that were over aggressive like us we watched the fight and poked from the sides and ultimately this was a true 3v3v3 fight.
This all said, I think you are 100% right about the reward and scrolls. We often win on round 3 or 4 and well, we don't get rewarded for that. Or at all.
More on healers, we usually start with 1 or 2 upgraded curse and a med on a non healer if we see healer heavy comps, we also make sure we have at least 1 heal in the team since going in without will make us lose if we slip up and the game goes to round 5+. But hitting and aphro with upgraded curse in this game mode is just death.
If the turtling team is a) too bad to do any significant damage to you when it's just a 3v3 and b) incapable of hiding in a spot that makes it likely the other team will clash with you before you find them, that probably just implies that team can't really pull their own strat off and simply plays worse than you. Doesn't mean that every scenario would go like that or that it would make my arguments flawed. We went after the turtling team as well, that doesn't mean that the game mode doesn't still encourage the mechanic. Same as in old joust you could dive a phoenix and possibly win, but the way it was set up still encouraged phoenix turtling.

Everyone says aphro is op in this mode, clearly you haven't seen the late game carries like hebo. Sure you lose a round, till inevitably you can 1v6 because 1 water spout>all omnipotent gods.
Xing Tian is nearly one of the most annoying supports in the game. But he's one of the best.
It's too easy for someone to carry another team to victory. A good Scylla easily can pick off a bad player and from there the buff they get makes an easy win. It's extremely stupid and unfair for everyone.

well lets talk about that... pc is one platform... console there is ps4 n xbox1... pc there is so so so many other choices for mobas on console there is legit only one and that is smite... lets just say the average ranked player is gold just for say... so that means higher or lower than that it would be harder to find good balanced matches even when queing at more common times like say around 6pm... i play on xbox and am a diamond ranked player that ques at like 4am constantly and 9/10 times its is balanced games where there is only plat-gm... where as i see pc youtubers that complain about being at diamond level that que at good times and still have golds in their lobbys on average... you can check at smite.guru and since no one has hard numbers id assume majority is on console... can i hear your argument
Sure my argument is that Hirez consistently says that the majority of smite players are on PC. I actually don't need another argument other than that, but I can continue. Console players skill flooring is much smaller than pc's. I easily got to masters on ps4 but struggle in diamond on PC, where I not only started but have been playing on since beta. So my reasoning for you finding more diamonds to play with is because it's easier to get to diamond on console.
ive never heard any smite employee saying that the majority of the player base is on pc but i take your word for it... and i assume that they are comparing pc to xbox to ps where as i am comparing pc to console... you say that its easier to get to diamond on console over pc... as i have never played on pc and pc smite has been around longer than console smite im sure that the top end of players have been playing for longer so i could see that but at the same time there is the whole which one is easier to maneuver on n so on... but you cant argue that the console scene in general isnt neglected heavily compared to pc where as im sure that even if the population is bigger on pc over both consoles its not by so much that they should just neglect console

Well, I don’t have much more to say. Kinda annoy me that people play so camper because is what the game inself incentívate. And damn, they really make it very grindy, something that most players complain about last adventures. I think the price of scrolls should be based in wins and faster possible, you can said that would be benefit for early game gods, but atleast will give to people to start aggressive. Reduce the time the sand come to the mid, and make the mask buff give defense too.
I love this gamemode so much but it does need polishing it wouldnt need polishing if it wasnt for the people its always the people ruining good thing like abusing comps or hiding its annoying its the first thing in a long while that ive played alone i never play smite on my own but i do with this so it just sucks that people abuse a gamemode like this

They’re not free. It costs time, and there’s no way the rewards are worth the time you need to get them.
Played this mode 2 times and never will again. And btw I won 1 of it but that is not why I wont play this again. Its just boring and its not that rewarding

You get 10 from buying a season ticket. I think the only other way is to get them from the winner chests.
