  • "Chiquitita" or "little girl" in Spanish was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for ABBA's sixth album, Voulez-Vous. The song was released in 1979 as the first single from the album and went to No. 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 15 on Billboard's US Adult contemporary chart. It was No. 1 in many countries worldwide. "Chiquitita" was one of ABBA's bigger hits and was featured in the 'Music for UNICEF' concert broadcast world wide from the United Nations General Assembly in 1979. ABBA donated 50% of all royalties from the song to UNICEF. In 2014, ABBA increased the donation to 100%. Having previously recorded this song on my acoustic accordion, I've had a couple of requests to re-record the song using my MIDI accordion. I think this version is more orchestral and has a little more bounce. Which one do you prefer?

I’m wondering how you got that piano sound layered on top, is that all played live or is that a backing track? I had to zoom in but it looks like you were playing it all.

Thank you for your interest! Yes, I do indeed play every note myself. I play an acoustic accordion which is fitted with MIDI. The piano sounds you hear are from my Roland JV-1010 synthesizer module. It's an older tone generator but it is still my favorite. The sound you hear is my accordion plus the layered piano sound on top. I never use backing tracks. I've noticed that other accordionists you see on RUclips rely on the backing track and don't even play the left hand - one-handed accordionists. That is not the way I want to play. As Frank Sinatra said: "It's Either All or Nothing at All." Bernadette

@@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion That’s very cool. And yes, I notice how active you are with the left hand, the toughest part of playing according in my opinion, but those who unlock the left hand with all the chords and bass lines, unlock the true potential of the accordion. I’m not one of them… yet!

@@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion May I actually ask your advice on left hand technique? It’s something I struggle with. If, for instance, I want to play a repeating D, Dmaj chord, A, Dmaj chord type of left hand pattern (I have a 72 bass Hohner), which fingers would you recommend using. I want to develop good habits so down the road I’m able to flow with it and play bass melodies and supporting chord patterns, but I tend to get tied up with which fingers to use for such a thing. I know there are different methods, but which one do you use/recommend? Thanks so much!!!
Also for practicing scales in the left hand, I’d love to know what finger pattern you’d recommend. I really appreciate any advice you can offer, or study routes you can recommend!!

@@jumptoit3812 Thank you very much for your interest. Let me answer the easier question first. The fingering I use for major scales for the left hand is: 3 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 2 - 4 - 2 - 3. As far as playing an alternating bass pattern which is what you describe, both the 3 - 2 and 4 - 3 systems are commonly used. The 4 - 3 system is generally used in Europe; the 3 - 2 is generally used in the US. Learning and growing up in Australia, I used both systems since I had a number of different teachers. Both have benefits. The second and third fingers are your strongest fingers so, it would make sense to use them. If you want to develop your fourth finger, you can still do this through practicing scales and bass lines. Depending where you are located and where you may be working with a teacher (someday), I would suggest 3 - 2 for the US and 4 - 3 for Europe. I cannot stress the importance of scales if you want to develop your familiarity with notes on the left hand. Major scales are a good place to start. Bernadette
