After triumphantly casting off the shackles of claustrophobic dissonance on 2020's lauded "Stare Into Death and Be Still", New Zealand unorthodox Death Metal legends ULCERATE up the ante even further with mind-bending 7th album "Cutting the Throat of God".
An acknowledgement that the band's most powerful and affecting material leans to the melodic side, this refined and hook-laden new record is a self-sufficient universe unto itself, a conflagration of inventively visceral Death/Black Metal where dizzying experimentation meets head-nodding abandon - obscenely twisted and addictive, heart-stopping in its depth of feeling.
After a quarter-century of playing music together, Hoggard/Saint Merat are cemented as one of the strongest guitar-percussion combinations in Extreme Metal, and their music has evolved organically into something completely its own. The most well-produced ULCERATE record to date, "Cutting the Throat of God" is filled with peerless rhythms, the band's smoothest transitions, most compelling phrasing, and truly staggering riffage. The exhilarating, liquescent flow is topped off by a destructively dynamic performance from vocalist/lyricist Paul Kelland.

Music nerd here. I felt the need to point out that dissonance is the opposite of consonance not the opposite of harmony. Any two or more notes sounding together, regardless whether they are dissonant or consonant, classifies as harmony, as harmony is the vertical relationship between intervals. Melody would be the horizontal relationship between intervals.

Only underrated by people who don’t know who he is 😊
Feels a little unfair he sometimes gets overshadowed by Jaimie, (who is without a doubt one of the greatest death metal drummers of all time) but there's literally nobody on the planet who writes riffs that sound remotely like this. Closest comparison I can think of is whoever plays guitar for Yellow Eyes with all they layered guitar parts and harmonies going on. Kind of a shame they don't have a second guitarist performing live with them imo
@@michaeljohnston8891 he uses a loop pedal live to create the same layers, which is all the more impressive. Hoggard definitely needs more recognition.

As a drummer, I was like awww the drums are lower in the mix, but now you point it out, it's like a new course in a meal. I have something different to snack on and enjoy this time around
@@bikerluke182 the mix is definitely waaay different from what were used to, but I think they’ve just tailored it better to bring out the unique aspects of their music a little better. I for one thought the drumming here was their usual course of mindfuckery

@@xbzkxpazvzv6800 been trying to learn this one by ear too. So far it’s not anything ridiculously over the top, Spawn of Possession level technical, but trying to figure out the individual guitar parts while they’re all harmonizing off each other is rough
Ulcerate have this tendency to make ya acknowledge whats lingering in your subconscious, masterclass
Seem like the band is going into darker, almost black metal like, direction. The sound is like a combination of Destroyers of All and Shrine of Paralysis. It's more energetic/faster-paced and less melancholic than Stare but still maintains a heightened sense of melody that has appeared on their previous two, especially Stare. Excited to hear more.
I had similar thoughts on this, also guitar sound is more like on Shrine of Paralysis and drums sounds more dry compared to Stare. Love it

I personally love the more melodic direction they've gone, they took the already perfect formula they had and just like put 15% more melody while keeping the insane technical proficiency and it just works

Discovered these masters in 2020 with Stare Into Death and Be Still and was completely blown away. Booked tickets to their live show in Melbourne on 1 August 2024 tonight. Will be in the front row screaming lyrics to the new tracks and old. All hail the dissonant lords of death metal!
