Farmina has a comprehensive cat food line. The Ancestral Grains that you reviewed is an entry-level product. The Pumpkin, Prime, Ocean and Quinoa lines have a more high-end quality to it. You could maybe analise the composition of one of these higher-end products and see if they do better on the mineral levels. I personally give the Prime line for my four cats and they are doing great.

I just finished transitioning my Golden Retriever, over a 2 month period, from TOTW grain inclusive Salmon kibble to Farmina grain inclusive Cod, Spelt, and Oats kibble. I chose this formula because Archie is chicken intolerant and this has no chicken and it also has no pea products! I also chose it because he is a Golden Retriever and I follow the data (and my vet) showing he needs grain in his diet. I transitioned very slowly because Archie is prone to loose stools and the slow go really paid off! It gave his digestive system time to adjust to each new increment level. Because the quality is so high, I feed him less per day than the TOTW and his bowels react accordingly, which is a good thing. I knew that Farmina was a really high quality food, so it was nice to get your seal of approval, even though it is a bit higher in protein than you like.

I was feeding Orijen and we were very happy until they were bought up, my dogs stomach changed right way so I switched to Farmina and I love it and my dogs look healthy and happy.

Is there a healthy maximum or healthy range for the numbers you use? Small Animal Clinical Nutrition says phosphorus for cats should be .5% to .8% dry matter basis. Farmina dry cat food, Chicken & Pomegranate says minimum of .9% which is already too high. You are on a roll with the good videos!

You made it sound like you were analyzing the "ancestral grain" line, but the picture you showed was for their "prime" line that isn't the ancestral grain line. Thanks so much for responding. I just placed an order for this. (Recently started using Orijen Amazing Grain.) Hoping the yeast doesn't cause problems, since it can be a hidden way to include MSG as a flavor enhancer. (MSG really messes with me personally.) Thanks again.
I had looked at Farmina dog food a while back and was pleasantly surprised by the numbers too. If I remember right the food contains pea starch or pea fiber as well as fish, which my dog is allergic to. I’ve noticed Science Diet has legumes in some of their diets now too, I hope they don’t reformulate all their foods to include pea protein. Thanks for another great video!
I would like to hear your thoughts on the copper level in the Farmina brand. I read of an instance of copper storage disease from someone who was feeding this food to her dog for 2 1/2 years. She was told to stop feeding this food. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Lynn, I must confess I am a nutrient nut. I am impressed with Farmina when u look at not quite scientific marketing yet their micronutrients are pretty accurate. I did not look at copper. My bias would say go with Hills since they are the company with the most precise nutrient levels. If you’re talking about a particular dog I’d have your vet call Hills and discuss it with a nutritionist. Again, sorry I never looked at copper levels.

Royal Canin is like Purina. They make some good diets and some bad…. Why I’ll never know. Profits I assume. Sure, Farmina has more meat. So what? The mineral levels, unlike their dog food, are higher than they should be( partly due to all that meat. Which Royal Canin are they on? We would need to look at the specific diet.
I'm really afraid of these Farmina ingredients precisely because of the damage that excess minerals can do. I'm currently using "Royal Canin Persian" for all three. I was thinking about using the "Royal Canin Maine Coon" too. Really, they don't speak well of Royal Canin, because it contains corn in its composition. The same thing happens with Hills. If I'm going to switch, I'll switch from Royal Canin to Hills.
@@Matheusmization I’m going to guess both RC diets are very similar. I imagine they should be. But I don’t have the nutrients to know. I of course believe you are doing the best going with Hills, the nutrients I do know. The whole issue of corn is just dishonest marketeers trying to tell you how awful corn is, so feed their food. In both RC and Hills you are providing plenty of taurine, the amino acid only found in meat, but you’re also getting other sources of protein to reduce the workload on kidneys and deliver more restricted healthy mineral levels to reduce the risk of urinary stones.
I used to feed my pets Farmina! They did really well on it, although I stopped feeding it after I had several quality issues in a row. Might have just been a rough patch since it was during their transition to expand in North America.
I have multiple cats in my household. I used to feed them Iams for a long time but I stopped because they kept getting ear infections. Vet thought it was weird since they are all indoor cats. She said it's most likely an allergy. I stopped Iams and started Pro Plan. They did better but still have issues. I changed to Science Diet this year and so far so good. They are not even vomiting food anymore which some used to do frequently. I will start my dogs on SD. One has an environmental allergy but don't want to get into prescription food. Hopefully Skin & Coat will help at least a little.
Something is different in this brand. Using it for years but bags made in Serbia have caused vomiting in my cats and from what I am finding out, many others as well. Wondering....
My 13 cats are thriving on this food. Non GMO and no grain, real meat. ❤ I was feeding all of my cats Science Diet Prescription for one cat with digestion issues. Vet said it was ok. I never liked the long list of garbage fillers in that food. On Farmina after 2 weeks I found the one kitty and all of my kitties happier and healthier. More energy. All of my cats are thriving. This Farmina has less junk in their product. Clean food. 😢 Yeah, it's expensive, but so are prescription foods.
CJ, Farmina is one of the few diets I reviewed but as I recall their dog food was great but their cat foods nutrient levels were not impressive. I’m glad your cats are all doing great. Those are not garbage fillers but ingredients picked to purposely deal with specific issues or to reduce overall mineral content. Really depends on the diet. Bug again, you have 13 cats doing well so good for all of them!

Susie, I disagree with Farminas statement that dogs are carnivores but even though they have higher protein numbers due to that belief, they control minerals from the protein very well. So I would trust their Large Breed Puppy. Higher protein is more a health concern for adults and seniors, not that year if puppyhood. I know the Hills Large Breed Puppy is excellent too. Raised three Berners on it! I think the Hills would be a little less expensive but your pup would be good with either one, in my opinion.
I’d like to ask you. Do you think the vet food (purina-hills) is better than the store bought? Purina essentials and hills advantage? Still debating whether to go with those or Farmina for the new Giant Shmauzer puppy we will be getting. There’s more protein and fat content in the Farmina although the other nutrients are according to the guidelines you spoke about. When you said you fed them hills large breed was it from the stores. I will tell you its pretty useless. started and run by a dentist, who seems to have a heart of gold and good intentions from an interview I watched, but his mistake it he looks at individual ingredients and rates foods accordingly. He misses the whole point of board certified nutritionists and chemists combining very unique and specific ingredients to deliver a nutrient profile to promote good health or manage a disease. he has no understanding of that. So the website is really useless. and without looking at nutrients, you have no idea if the ingredients listed are high quality or low quality. so I'd avoid it to avoid the confusion. Pet food marketers must love it though.
I tried feeding both these diets with no success. I did the exact ones you mentioned for both my cat and dog. However I was unlucky and both my animals experienced heavy diarrhea daily and I introduced slowly with the aid of pre/probiotics over 6 weeks. I was so surprised as the reviews were so positive. I know it was the food as my veterinarian ruled all else out. And it cleared up after switching foods for them. I’ve had trouble finding the right food as my dog has loose stool and the only food that cleared it completely was Orijen but now that she’s an adult I don’t want her taking in excess. The Farmina formula just didn’t work for my pets. But really happy to see your thoughts on the brand, was an interesting review to watch. I know many people love it. My pets are on hills now and doing better.

I remember their website showed they were very involved with vet groups in Europe. That doesn't mean their diets are perfect. They do have too high a protein level but otherwise really good nutrient levels, so for those poor souls that are just caught up in fancy ingredients Farmina is probably the best.
I'm glad you added the cat food review too!! I think the Purina One Urinary Health kibble is probably a better choice, from your past reviews, especially if you are looking for more of a budget brand. The only issue with that (and this is coming right from my vet) is that cats need oral care and kibble is a good way to do that, as brushing a cat's teeth is not a fun thing to try!! lol! Science Diet is also very expensive. I feed my 2 cats and 1 small dog Science Diet and it costs me a small fortune every month to feed them, especially because (as I mentioned in a previous comment) I have to buy canned food for my dog as well or he won't touch his kibble.
TJ, thanks for the comment! Actually dry food is no more beneficial for cats or dogs than canned. Years ago that was true when canned food was extremely high in ingredients that were calciogenic, caused plaque to form. Now many brands are better. Dry crumbles without removing the plaque so it hardens into tarter. Hills does make the only cat food(dry) with a fiber matrix that does not break apart, so it squeegies the teeth up to the gum line, removing the plaque. It has a VOHC seal for both plaque and tarter. One of my subscribers feeds it and last dental checkup was great. You could feed it as a treat if you didn’t want to change diets. But yes, that Purina One Urinary Health is a great diet at a great price! Really surprised me.

I don't always agree with Glenn. Not very often in fact. But he is up front that he worked for Hill's for 34 years. He is just presenting nutritional information. It is up to each person to decide what to feed their pets.
I don't like this company. Their AAFCO feeding trials are actually in home trials and not controlled like the ones that the Big 3 do. They justify this by saying that their in home trials are superior than the regular ones because they provide a friendlier environment which won't cause peaks in cortisol and adrenaline levels in cats and dogs during blood drawing which may skew results, implying that the animals at Hill's, Purina, and RC live in a stressful situation which is entirely false. I want controlled feeding trials in facilities not in homes where many variables can't possibly be as controlled. Also their whole marketing is off putting; dogs are not carnivores no matter how many times they like to repeat saying that. "ancestral grains" aren't better than traditional grains, and 94-98% proteins coming from animal origin isn't better than a combination of animal and plant protein -- really where are the studies on that, especially since plant protein can be more digestible than animal protein in some cases. They also say that they have no more than 20% carbs (pre processing) which I have no idea why this is supposed to be such a good thing since cooked carbs are highly digestible anyway and many of their diets do end up with more than 20% carbs on a DMB. If they want to be science based, they shouldn't follow fads and spread misinformation, they should allow their diets to speak for themselves.
Wow George! I gotta say I can’t disagree with anything you wrote. It’s all spot on! In my evaluating their nutrients I guess I’m getting to the point where I tolerate the misleading marketing. But you are right. You can’t be both science based and then promote unscientific BS. Great points for people to consider!
All other foods have a bunch of unacceptable garbage inside their products. Farmina does not have garbage in it. There are no recalls on their food. No carageen, or red dye 40. I'd rather feed my pet a product with limited ingredients. Excellent food. 🎉

Went to the website and looks like it’s been discontinued. They are asking to switch to Merrick, which is owned by Purina now.

I believe their formulas with grains do not contain and peas or legumes.
I’ll have to take another look, thanks for the info. My dog is doing great on science diet so I’ll stick with that but it’s good to have options.
Our previous dog was a Science Diet dog and did well. We are trying Farmina with a current pup.

Hill's Pet Nutrition had a float in the Rose Parade. It was appropriate. Floats are made of flowers, plants and seeds. Just like Hill's cat food! LOL

I currently rotate between Carna4 and Honest Kitchen Whole Grain clusters. I might add Farmina into the rotation as well!

I feed my 2 cats and 1 small dog Science Diet and it costs me a small fortune every month to feed them, especially because (as I mentioned in a previous comment) I have to buy canned food for my dog as well or he won't touch his kibble.
TJ, thanks for the comment! Actually dry food is no more beneficial for cats or dogs than canned. Years ago that was true when canned food was extremely high in ingredients that were calciogenic, caused plaque to form. Now many brands are better. Dry crumbles without removing the plaque so it hardens into tarter. Hills does make the only cat food(dry) with a fiber matrix that does not break apart, so it squeegies the teeth up to the gum line, removing the plaque. It has a VOHC seal for both plaque and tarter. One of my subscribers feeds it and last dental checkup was great. You could feed it as a treat if you didn’t want to change diets. But yes, that Purina One Urinary Health is a great diet at a great price! Really surprised me.

I don't always agree with Glenn. Not very often in fact. But he is up front that he worked for Hill's for 34 years. He is just presenting nutritional information. It is up to each person to decide what to feed their pets.

I don't like this company. Their AAFCO feeding trials are actually in home trials and not controlled like the ones that the Big 3 do. They justify this by saying that their in home trials are superior than the regular ones because they provide a friendlier environment which won't cause peaks in cortisol and adrenaline levels in cats and dogs during blood drawing which may skew results, implying that the animals at Hill's, Purina, and RC live in a stressful situation which is entirely false. I want controlled feeding trials in facilities not in homes where many variables can't possibly be as controlled. Also their whole marketing is off putting; dogs are not carnivores no matter how many times they like to repeat saying that. "ancestral grains" aren't better than traditional grains, and 94-98% proteins coming from animal origin isn't better than a combination of animal and plant protein -- really where are the studies on that, especially since plant protein can be more digestible than animal protein in some cases. They also say that they have no more than 20% carbs (pre processing) which I have no idea why this is supposed to be such a good thing since cooked carbs are highly digestible anyway and many of their diets do end up with more than 20% carbs on a DMB. If they want to be science based, they shouldn't follow fads and spread misinformation, they should allow their diets to speak for themselves.
Wow George! I gotta say I can’t disagree with anything you wrote. It’s all spot on! In my evaluating their nutrients I guess I’m getting to the point where I tolerate the misleading marketing. But you are right. You can’t be both science based and then promote unscientific BS. Great points for people to consider!

All other foods have a bunch of unacceptable garbage inside their products. Farmina does not have garbage in it. There are no recalls on their food. No carageen, or red dye 40. I'd rather feed my pet a product with limited ingredients. Excellent food. 🎉
I use Farmina and my dogs are all doing very well.
