Not at all, they’re making new hardware for next gen. If that hardware is as great as my sx has been (or any other of the Xbox consoles) I’m there day one.
They were already in third place buddy. And if you look industry-wide, console sales are not growing for anyone. So unless you found a way to clone people there's no way to grow your console customer base as quickly as we did during COVID. Therefore Microsoft having the brilliance of a trillion-dollar company realize the only way to gain more customers is to sell more software. The hard truth is PlayStation fanboys aren't even buying and playing first party exclusives. So every box is a third party box. Microsoft pulled out of the console battle so they could win the gaming war.
I agree. I feel like they’re trying to solve a problem that no one was really asking for. If your not a gamer, your not going suddenly subscribe to gamepass to play cod. I believe you’ll have the same audience that you’ve had just spread around to different devices. Gamepass ultimate at $20 per month is too expensive for a casual gamer or a kid. They need to have a cheaper streaming only option.

Same. I was just playing Spyro on my ROG Alley via gamepass continuing my progress from the console. Its pretty cool to be able to do that. My only complaint is how fast the Alley dies lol. If that rumored Xbox handheld has decent battery life, if if that means sacrificing some hardware like Nintendo does, I'm all in.
The content war is over... All XBOX games will be on PS and PS will take 30% and use that to make / get more timed exclusives. They already tried to use all of that sea of thieves money to get CRIMSON DESERT as an exclusive.

Xbox is just going to put themselves under, video games are not a media like movies and TV shows. A single game can consume a lot of time and many people are not willing to pay for a subscription just to play a single game for a year that they could purchase for less than half a years subscription would cost them, many are also not comfortable with not "owning" their games, even though they never owned them in the first place. Gamepass is only really a good value for those that do nothing else but play games, which is a smaller consumer base than many would think, which is why the service is struggling to grow. Games also just cost far more and take far longer to make than movies and TV shows, their service isn't really sustainable at it's rate of growth, it has turned into a gigantic money sink where the promise of profit has become a pipe dream because it requires increasingly more money to grow. In terms of profits as well, Gamepass is a terrible proposition for Xbox. A years worth of subscription is like the price of 3 new games, most avid gamers would spend more than that a year anyways and Gamepass could cause those people to actually spend less, actively shrinking the revenue and growth of the industry.

Xbox is not abandoning the console market they’ll still be making consoles. It’s just that the environment of gameplay is changing so it’s gonna be on TV. It’s gonna be on a PC. It’s gonna be on a handheld. It’s gonna be on a mobile what it boils down to is this some people are scared of change in time everything will make sense. I like Xbox I can see where they’re going. It’s a very positive move.
Xbox’s PC app is not great. Their mobile app is bad. Their “Play Anywhere” concept for game purchases is a joke. They have no plans to allow purchased games to play across all these different options. Your purchased games are essentially marooned on console. If you think “This is an Xbox” is compelling based on their history and their current offerings, you are kidding yourself.
Phil Spencer was aware this would piss off a large portion of their existing fanbase, and he didnt care. Xbox are a corporation they would throw out all their loyal customers if it meant getting a larger player base of casual users.

Michael Practer has been wrong many times. Fact is 50 million people still playing on their Ps4 and yet Ps5 is basically tied in sales to ps4 from the same year/month according to Vg Charts which is insane growth if half your player base is still on previous gen and still selling like ps4 did!

The campaign didn't bother me one bit. I love the xbox brand, but let's be honest, they can't keep doing the same thing if they want to stay relevant. The console isn't selling enough to compete with Sony and Nintendo by traditional methods, that's why they need to expand their reach if they want the xbox brand to stay alive.

Sony and Nintendo don't have an interest in putting games on an Xbox console because their focus is on hardware sales, unlike Xbox. Putting their games on an Xbox console would jeopardize that.

I'm an Xbox fan, been there since OG. I LOVE modern Xbox because it's giving me options to play my games however, whenever, wherever! This is amazing! Old school tactics lock you on one way to play. Xbox is enabling different ways to enjoy games - you can spend a few hundred for couch gaming (cheap) and then play in your bed on the android phone (with controlller). You travelled away from home? That's cool, just plug in the usb stick on a bigscreen where you are. Off you go - enjoy gaming.
My issue with this “marketing campaign” is they literally had nothing to gain, and only had their current fans to lose You aren’t going to get a PS or PC owner to believe they “already an Xbox“ but you are going to piss off your current fans telling them they should’ve just bought a PC or PS

Xbox expanding to other platforms does not take away my enjoyment of their games on my console. In fact, it's an added value. I just recently bought a mid-tier PC and I am so grateful for the Play Anywhere initiative, I can play a lot of my games on either platform. Also, I've found that some games have region pricing, so I can save if I buy them on PC (my console is set to EN-US because my country is not supported, console games are USD full-priced). I don't get the hate, and I'm beginning to think that the ones who do are those who want to perpetuate the console war. It's not like Xbox stops releasing games on console because they're releasing on PC or PS. The console is still their baby, but as a business they have to be forward-thinking and they'd be dumb to ignore other platforms, especially mobile, which is a HUGE market here and other parts of Asia.

As a "Xbox purist", all I want is fair compensation for my investment into the platform. I'm all for expanding the Xbox ecosystem, but if I'm the one spending $500+ for the actual console, then I should expect first class treatment from Microsoft.
My main console is an Xbox and this marketing campaign doesn’t bother me. Exclusives are bad for everyone and they’re not going to stop making games for the console. I don’t mind if Xbox games are released on other consoles including PS5. If they don’t make consoles in future, that’s ok as long as I can still play the games on another device.
I totally get the strategy and I'm all for more money being made. But if the strategy puts more and more games on PlayStation I've gotta make the economic decision for myself to get a PS5 or 6 instead at some point. Everything else I'm ok with (Phone, Tablets, PC). I can buy multiple consoles no problem but I just don't have the time to play much.

I play through the Cloud on my phone and Meta Quest 3, but when I really want a great experience, I play on my Xbox console. I think this will help "casuals" jump into the eco-system without the big cost of entry from a console.
Lately, I've been playing my Xbox on my tablet more than I'm playing on my actual Xbox console. To be fare I'm using my tablet when at work, but still... my tablet... is an Xbox.
It's hard for me to keep buying games for a console that we don't know if it will keep getting consoles in the future for all the games I own digitally. Yes they told us they are making more hardware but at this point I don't trust them. I have been a Xbox main since the 360 but this is pushing me to just buy all my stuff on PlayStation from now on.
I wouldn't be too worried. Microsoft isn't leaving the gaming industry. Worst case scenario, they'll have 3rd party manufacturers develop hardware that supports their ecosystem. They are just becoming more PC

I'm much more onboard with the Xbox "everything" strategy than I am with Playstation's closed-garden Apple strategy where you pay a premium for the privilege of every feature and peripheral.

I like the Xbox ad, they should have come out with it sooner. I’m a long time Xbox gamer too! Xbox Play Everywhere! But I don’t want Microsoft to abandon the console. I primarily play on console and I use my console everyday. It’s the center of my entertainment. Edit: it’s cool that you can play Xbox games in a lot of different ways. My sentiment is that I’ll be able to game on Xbox for many years to come.
I think you're overestimating how many people are angry about it. It's a handful of dead-enders who post on places like Neogaf or Resetera who think that Microsoft should continue making what are essentially the same thing as what Sony makes, put out exclusive games for consoles outsold three to one by Sony, and lose money. Instead they're trying a different strategy that probably does imply they're phasing out hardware eventually but will make them far more revenue. Nintendo couldn't compete head to head with Sony 20 years ago, pivoted, and are way way better off for it. Microsoft will be better off without releasing "Playstation but green" and pivoting to becoming the biggest software publisher in video games instead.
Xbox never developped more its hardware since 10 years with Xbox Design Lab in 2014, Elite Series Controlers starting 2015, Xbox One X in 2017, Xbox Adaptive Controler in 2018, Not 1, but 2 Xbox Series in 2020, Xbox Adaptive Joystick in 2024, 3 new Xbox Series in 2024, and handheld console in coming years...

Traditional home consoles might become obsolete by 2030 because let's just be honest the Next Generation Or Generation Z doesn't care about generational leaps about consoles anymore they actually play more on PC or on their phones compared to Boomers and Millennials that are stuck on the consoles. So I wouldn't be surprised if eventually the console Generations vanished because let's just be honest PlayStation console sales are mostly returning PlayStation players buying the hardware over and over again, but Millennials are more interested in buying consoles anymore. My own son rejects the PlayStation and Xbox and prefers to play on PC and on his Apple iPhone to play fortnite.
Sure, "Xbox says they'll still make consoles," the same way they said that only select games would come to PC, or that only those 4 games would come to PlayStation. The handheld will 100% be cancelled and Game Pass will be on the PlayStation handheld in like 2 years.
I think people dont necessarily want exclusivity, they just want competition. I want a reason to decide between Xbox or Playstation, and so far game pass has been a let down.

With this one ad campaign, Xbox just killed the whole "we're bringing a portable to the market" approach. Why buy their portable, when my ROG Z1 Extreme runs everything that theirs will PLUS my Steam, Epic, EA and Blizzard games?
you don't have to buy it, but there are dozens of countries where buying a rog ally or a steamdeck is too expencive for consumers, and a portable xbox for a cheaper price really is necessary.
As a Playstation user, I think Xbox fans see this marketing as Microsoft admitting defeat without actually admitting defeat. For the sake of the console war, they want to see Xbox comeback, like they did with the 360. Essentially Microsoft is saying we can't beat them, so we're going to change the standard for success.

Dumb idea with "everything is an xbox" but honestly if they release a handheld to compete with a Steam Deck that lets me use my entire steam library with gamepass I'm there.
This strategy makes sense. Eventually when people have multiple Xbox games they are more inclined to buy new Xbox hardware down the line. People don't care about graphics like people think so coming out with a handheld will draw more people in

What I find interesting is how Xbox apparently can't market outside of... existing customers? Like that's what's weird to me about the outrage. The ad isn't targeted at existing fans. It's an attempt to grow outside of the console market entirely (which isn't that big compared to the rest of the gaming industry). I don't look at Xbox reaching out to non console gamers as a personal attack. Especially not when the console market has yet to grow beyond the PS2 which itself has only sold 160 million units (and that's after Sony somehow announcing more sales post mortem).

It's more accurate if mobile phone gaming did not get classified as videogaming. It's catering to a completely separate demographic which happens to share vague similarities to conventional gamers. Same for MMOs/gachas players, they don't play anything else.
Microsoft is a trillion dollar company and a visionary too and knows that just as vinyl became cassette to CDs to Streaming and VHS became DVDs to Blu Ray to streaming, Games will not dwell in consoles and PCs forever but will also dwell in other devices like Advanced TVs, Rokus, Firesticks, Tablets, Smartphones, VR sets etc ... This is what we call foresight
The issue I see is that there is no incentive for forward momentum from Sony and Microsoft anymore. With the apparent commercial success of PS5 Pro, we have sent the message to Sony that we don't care about games. We will still buy your expensive products even when there is nothing to play on it.

Xbox is just going to put themselves under, video games are not a media like movies and TV shows. A single game can consume a lot of time and many people are not willing to pay for a subscription just to play a single game for a year that they could purchase for less than half a years subscription would cost them, many are also not comfortable with not "owning" their games, even though they never owned them in the first place. Gamepass is only really a good value for those that do nothing else but play games, which is a smaller consumer base than many would think, which is why the service is struggling to grow.
Games also just cost far more and take far longer to make than movies and TV shows, their service isn't really sustainable at it's rate of growth, it has turned into a gigantic money sink where the promise of profit has become a pipe dream because it requires increasingly more money to grow.
In terms of profits as well, Gamepass is a terrible proposition for Xbox. A years worth of subscription is like the price of 3 new games, most avid gamers would spend more than that a year anyways and Gamepass could cause those people to actually spend less, actively shrinking the revenue and growth of the industry.

Xbox’s PC app is not great. Their mobile app is bad. Their “Play Anywhere” concept for game purchases is a joke. They have no plans to allow purchased games to play across all these different options. Your purchased games are essentially marooned on console.

Old school tactics lock you on one way to play. Xbox is enabling different ways to enjoy games - you can spend a few hundred for couch gaming (cheap) and then play in your bed on the android phone (with controlller). You travelled away from home? That's cool, just plug in the usb stick on a bigscreen where you are. Off you go - enjoy gaming.

Xbox expanding to other platforms does not take away my enjoyment of their games on my console. In fact, it's an added value. I just recently bought a mid-tier PC and I am so grateful for the Play Anywhere initiative, I can play a lot of my games on either platform. Also, I've found that some games have region pricing, so I can save if I buy them on PC (my console is set to EN-US because my country is not supported, console games are USD full-priced).
I don't get the hate, and I'm beginning to think that the ones who do are those who want to perpetuate the console war. It's not like Xbox stops releasing games on console because they're releasing on PC or PS. The console is still their baby, but as a business they have to be forward-thinking and they'd be dumb to ignore other platforms, especially mobile, which is a HUGE market here and other parts of Asia.

I play through the Cloud on my phone and Meta Quest 3, but when I really want a great experience, I play on my Xbox console. I think this will help "casuals" jump into the eco-system without the big cost of entry from a console.

Lately, I've been playing my Xbox on my tablet more than I'm playing on my actual Xbox console. To be fare I'm using my tablet when at work, but still... my tablet... is an Xbox.

I like the Xbox ad, they should have come out with it sooner. I’m a long time Xbox gamer too! Xbox Play Everywhere! But I don’t want Microsoft to abandon the console. I primarily play on console and I use my console everyday. It’s the center of my entertainment.

I think you're overestimating how many people are angry about it. It's a handful of dead-enders who post on places like Neogaf or Resetera who think that Microsoft should continue making what are essentially the same thing as what Sony makes, put out exclusive games for consoles outsold three to one by Sony, and lose money. Instead they're trying a different strategy that probably does imply they're phasing out hardware eventually but will make them far more revenue. Nintendo couldn't compete head to head with Sony 20 years ago, pivoted, and are way way better off for it. Microsoft will be better off without releasing "Playstation but green" and pivoting to becoming the biggest software publisher in video games instead.

Traditional home consoles might become obsolete by 2030 because let's just be honest the Next Generation Or Generation Z doesn't care about generational leaps about consoles anymore they actually play more on PC or on their phones compared to Boomers and Millennials that are stuck on the consoles. So I wouldn't be surprised if eventually the console Generations vanished because let's just be honest PlayStation console sales are mostly returning PlayStation players buying the hardware over and over again, but Millennials are more interested in buying consoles anymore.
My own son rejects the PlayStation and Xbox and prefers to play on PC and on his Apple iPhone to play fortnite.
Sure, "Xbox says they'll still make consoles," the same way they said that only select games would come to PC, or that only those 4 games would come to PlayStation. The handheld will 100% be cancelled and Game Pass will be on the PlayStation handheld in like 2 years.

For the sake of the console war, they want to see Xbox comeback, like they did with the 360. Essentially Microsoft is saying we can't beat them, so we're going to change the standard for success.
Playstation and Nintendo should too, all gamers playing all games together.

People have been saying that since the first Xbox console launched back in 2001 🤣 It's also weird that people are so hyper focused on the number of console units sold at the mid point of the generation and are acting like it's the end of the console generation. I guess you could say that the PS5 is also a failure when compare to the PS4 🤣
Dumb idea with "everything is an xbox" but honestly if they release a handheld to compete with a Steam Deck that lets me use my entire steam library with gamepass I'm there.

This strategy makes sense. Eventually when people have multiple Xbox games they are more inclined to buy new Xbox hardware down the line. People don't care about graphics like people think so coming out with a handheld will draw more people in
The ad was great. It's a brilliant way to let people know they can play xbox games on a lot of devices. Who cares if they let you play on devices that aren't consoles
What I find interesting is how Xbox apparently can't market outside of... existing customers? Like that's what's weird to me about the outrage. The ad isn't targeted at existing fans. It's an attempt to grow outside of the console market entirely (which isn't that big compared to the rest of the gaming industry). I don't look at Xbox reaching out to non console gamers as a personal attack. Especially not when the console market has yet to grow beyond the PS2 which itself has only sold 160 million units (and that's after Sony somehow announcing more sales post mortem).

If Netflix had listened to some of these gamers, we will still be renting physical DVDs instead of streaming right in our homes
I loved the ad. Being able to play my same games across a laptop or Windows handheld that I can take when traveling? What's not to love about that?

It's more accurate if mobile phone gaming did not get classified as videogaming. It's catering to a completely separate demographic which happens to share vague similarities to conventional gamers. Same for MMOs/gachas players, they don't play anything else.
Xbox is basically just a service now. If that approach is profitable or not remains to be seen.

Microsoft is a trillion dollar company and a visionary too and knows that just as vinyl became cassette to CDs to Streaming and VHS became DVDs to Blu Ray to streaming,
Games will not dwell in consoles and PCs forever but will also dwell in other devices like Advanced TVs, Rokus, Firesticks, Tablets, Smartphones, VR sets etc ...

The issue I see is that there is no incentive for forward momentum from Sony and Microsoft anymore. With the apparent commercial success of PS5 Pro, we have sent the message to Sony that we don't care about games. We will still buy your expensive products even when there is nothing to play on it.
