One africa twin for sale, never dropped, only ridden to the shops on sunday (in all seriousness its great to see one getting used for more than commuting to work)
OZ Tent for the win! I've been using a RV3 for years over here in the states, BIG fan! This video embodies why I almost solely ride my 500 for any real off-road tracks these days, they make short work of the technical terrain. I keep Helga, my hefty German steed (R1250 GSA) for touring/tarmac and mild off-road work only. Thanks for sharing the hell that was this hill with the rest of us, good stuff.
I’ve been living my dirt bike life through Tom for 10 years or so. I don’t remember. But I just got a used YZ450F and am getting it running. I’m cheap and like a good project. But soon I will be getting out there. Some on my own and some with my son. As much as I like a big race bike, I wish I could have found a good 250 2 stroke project.
Many bikes have come and gone in my riding history, but my 12 year old 500exc is never going away! It’s absolutely my favorite bike! I have a great old 990 too, but I’m too old and out of shape to do this kind of riding on it anymore. No problem on my 500. Going back to Europe and Africa this fall on my trusty 21 year old 450exc.
I reckon that Africa twin lost about 1000 dollars worth of value for every hour it spent in that event. Big freakin ups to that dude! I wouldnt take my AT anywhere near that event! Friggin legend! Doing on that bike what it was made to do (and perhaps a little bit more ;) )
Great vid but I'm thinking the guy at 9:04..the on the 1100 needs to stand up more..lean Over the bars to transfer the weight from the back otherwise he's just a passenger hanging on...the couple of guys before him made it look easy due to them standing up...
Hint: if you have the option of driving your bike to an event, take a trail bike. If you have to ride there, take an adventure bike and don’t take the hard track.
Hey Tom, does your wife still have her 636? Looking to buy one again after selling mine regretfully during lockdown. So rare to find any for sale from 2013-2016. Had green, but love the white!
I don't understand why everyone else should suffer pulling the rhino up a hill because you choose the wrong bike or are incapable of riding it. Maybe once or twice but after that you're on your own buddy.
I generally go for widest possible angle which is all stabilisation off, but the DJI is pretty bloody wide these days I might turn on some basic stablisation
@@RidingWithTom I bought an Osmo 4 and love it. Better than the GoPro in quite a few different ways. I don't think you'll notice the crop much if you put on basic Rocksteady. Love your content Tom 👍
Isn’t it a race? I get comradeship but if guys are riding bike that aren’t suitable for the route staying and helping them is costing you time and a place in the finish?
Question here; would an Africa Twin with a DCT be a big help on these steep rocky sections with the hills? In terms of modulating power without being able to stall, I wonder if it helps. I don't have offroad experience yet, but interested in knowing.
I think it would be pretty hairy having it roll backwards at idle, might be better for it to stall, does the dct at have hill hold? been awhile since I rode a dct one
@@RidingWithTom I haven't found anything about a hill hold. ADV Pulse wrote an article about how the DCT AT had easier off road hill starts by modulating the front brake (where the clutch lever would usually be) while opening the throttle. The bike will automatically shift to gain traction allowing you to just focus on which line to use and when to brake. Seems like a strong advantage.
The front to back balance of that 500 is woeful. The front wheel is nowhere near the ground when you ride, in fact it’s about a metre away from it. That seriously affects front wheel grip. Try the clickers mate….
You guys need to be more serious like me. I have a 300xc, 500exc-f, Husky 701 and a 790S adv. A tool for every occasion. Yes, my life has revolved around dirt bikes. Just past 65 years young. Doing a Canada to mexico dirt ride through the cascade's and Sierra Nevada mtns. in August. I bought the 701 for that ride.
@@RidingWithTom I did too but oddly enough for when I was shopping Cycle Trader none where availible that were the 2019 version with the second cam dampener engine. My search was 500 miles around Los Angeles.
I have to be honest here.I watch a lot of your content and this looked like a Monkey Fucking a Football.I simply don’t understand the bigger bikes on that track. It cannot be good for the bikes. No sympathy for the riders.
Mate, you guys are gluttons for punishment. Get rid of those heavy dinosaurs, I'll bet that africa twin needs a new clutch. Trade in for a 250 or 450 MX bike, they are lighter, better tires and plenty of power. We've got an area just like that at Barnwell in Texas, loads of fun. Tom is doing a good job feathering the clutch and feet on the pegs
Audio still sounded great for no helmet mic!
Also a shame I couldn't make it out this year, looked like great tracks and good fun! 🤙
Yeah I was surprised, I thought it would be just wind blast
@RidingWithTom is this with your new dji cam?

I take mine most places I take my trail bike just not the steep gnarled hills 😅

The little 300 Rally! Love that bike!
Still some of the most entertaining videos on a bike 👍 As an old time snake wrangler, loved seeing the snake rescue 👍👍
These video’s remind of why I have a KTM 640 Adv for these types of rides and a KTM 1190 Adv EDS for on road riding.
Mark is my hero 😂
Legend of the super adventure squadron

The T7's definitely held their own (giving the riders their due as well)
Your wheelie mad Tom! Looks like fun on the 500, thanks for the vid.👍
Love to see more riding with Tom great content mate
Still have a whole Europe trip to edit and upload! I’m slacking!
He’s back 😊
Video sounded fine, Tom! Those hills looked super steep, even on camera.
Awesome video mate good to see another EXC destroying the skilled track👌
Really enjoyed the Vid, Open Roads is such a great event. Well done Tom.
LETS GOOO!
HALF HOUR WITH TOM!!
Cheers for Indiana!
Tom, you're an animal! That was awesome. Keep it up man!
Great stuff, could someone please give the guy on the Africa twin an Award......... Legend/Mad bastard Award or something.
Good riding first of all and loved Tom caring for the snake i would have done the same. Keep on mate.
That guy on the 300EXC was cheating by using that bike! Can't believe he didn't stop and help you guys! Great stuff mate.
Well done, looked fun. Greetings from Sweden
Tom is enjoying the carnage a little too much! 😂
18:18 can't believe you left me to die (disclaimer: I am in fact, not dead)
Love it Tom it's bloody hilarious!
Great video mate. Super entertaining.

As a DRZ rider I know there’s a long day ahead when I see the big bikes AT, 901 & the 890 are usually the hold up every time
"Go the raindeer" or in Norwegian: :Gå reinsdyr" 😂
Nice work. 5hundo for the win! I love mine 👍

Video got good entertaining in the evening. 🤣.
Hmm. That was entertaining.
And its interesting to note there are more ways than one for a young man to go blind!
What tyre pressures are those bigger bikes running and do the riders now how to ride the clutch
sick ride!!! just curious... do these adventure riders lower the tyre pressure to get a bit more traction for these rocky hills??
30:40 Was that the back straight at Broadford?
Looks like some good tracks. I wonder if the Tiger could claw its way up them?!
Looking at the Africa Twin it’d be good to fit something like Tractionator Desert H/T
Hint: if you have the option of driving your bike to an event, take a trail bike.
If you have to ride there, take an adventure bike and don’t take the hard track.
The 500 sure is a beast!
Love your stuff
Hey Tom, great vid, any reason you didn’t buy the 701, what do you think about it over the T7 or 890, just your thoughts would be appreciated

Bump
The hill, is why my GSA1200 is for sale. My 300cc two stroke is the bike of choice and a 500 cc mini adventure is in the future..I am old!
Do your brakes overheat on those long descents?
love the content mate 👍🏻

The struggle it what makes it fun
It's gonna be a lesson for sure
Agreed, some of these bike are far too big for the high country
If struggling is joy , just fatboy 😂
Nice Tom.
Hey, did you have your Rocksteady turned off for some reason?
I generally go for widest possible angle which is all stabilisation off, but the DJI is pretty bloody wide these days I might turn on some basic stablisation

The extra 30 lbs certainly wouldn’t help 😆

You got the kick flip on camera... most would not belive you.
@10:12 My reaction when I find out it's going to rain on my only day off to go riding.
14:25 you’re a bit of a mentalist sometimes 😂

Probably the perfect garage, should have a 690 over the 701 though, gotta be orange

15:08 cheers
Two very different riders at 6.00 min in😀
The t7 does sound sweet
It's like riding Open Roads with Aussie Deadpool
Omg new vids🎉
Please no more hyperview Tom, it's nausea inducing.
Fucking stellar content man. Cheers.
Weight is your enemy on these climbs. See how much easier on a single cylinder bike.
Funny shit! 😅
Let’s go
❤❤
more thomas, make more
Stop doing that or you'll go blind.
Here I am doing it again 😂
Bring back the wr250r, glad I wasn;t riding a big adventure bike up that snotty stuff.
Snake save or snake harrassment ??😆
First comment
I think 150cc commuter will do much better than these hippos 😂😂😂
How to you accumulate so much wealth to afford all these cars and bikes?
What's with the camera? It's like being in a goldfish bowl
Africa Twin bro probably should have learnt how to ride before taking this on.
Wrong place to park on that hill .. people never listen
You and your bloody snakes…
I have to be honest here.I watch a lot of your content and this looked like a Monkey Fucking a Football.I simply don’t understand the bigger bikes on that track. It cannot be good for the bikes. No sympathy for the riders.
Most annoying commentry ever
