I sold my 2015 STI to make room for my 2021 Carrera S , only so much garage. I missed that car from the day I sold it. Found a 2018 with 19000 miles on it that I'm picking up tomorrow . My 911 has 450 hp and is awesome in every way, but there's something about the STI that makes it equally as enjoyable as the 911. Probably part of it is I'm not quite as paranoid that someone will smash in to me. I also have a 07 STI that is a total blast to drive. The 07 is like an overgrown go kart. I love STI's.
What are you even talking about? I have seen no 3.5 for 2006, its actually the 3.0 with 190hp for 2006 and older. 2007 is when they made a horse power bump to 268 for 2007-2017 models.
Got to test drive one yesterday and it was great. Soft clutch easy for daily driving. Nice sporty interior. Only thing I found odd for me was that the headlights don't shine high enough.
Hi Matt, I'm just finding your Channel and so glad I did. I'm 51 years old and decided I needed something fun to drive. I'm also a Hot Wheels collector and that's actually how I got introduced to the Subaru Impreza STi. Beautiful Diecast by the way! Not sure I'll be able to get one but it's nice to dream and maybe have something to work towards. You're a great guy and I've watched several of your Subaru reviews this morning. That smile after you find that back road tells me everything I need to know about a Subaru.
This car used would make a reasonable car for a recent college grad in a good career. Nice, but nothing too expensive. Better than the kids who say they're going to buy a brand new C63s right outta school who can't afford it lmao.
TheHvk exactly lmao imma get a wrx with a good warranty over a bmw or Mercedes like most kids think they can afford an end up selling it after a year. Cheaper service and for Pennsylvania a perfect all season vehicle that is practical
Flash forward to 2022, and I'm sure you join the World in the hugely-disappointing new exterior styling and generic interior lol Sadly, Subaru has jumped the Shark and watered down the original recipe. Just like how the last good BMW 3-Series was the E90 era and the last good Infinity sedan was the G37, before Nissan ruined the steering feel in the Q Series with the steering-by-wire system.
First video I've seen on this channel. Got a subscribe. Really well done matt, your piece to camera skills are very good. Also how often do you hear rev hang being mentioned in a car review. Quality stuff
I test drove a limited last year and it's very tempting to get it over the base. I'm not sure if these hater comments have actually test drove one because the throttle is sensitive and you can accelerate quickly with it. I found myself being at 4K RMP quickly. I don't think there is understeer, you just gotta know how to drive the right car right. And if you guys think about it, all that 305hp is split to 4 wheels. If it's only rwd at this set up. That's easily 400+hp. The clutch is butter!!!
Even though Subaru still rates the STi at 305 hp, the 18' models are tuned differently from the factory and have been putting more power down to the wheels than previous years. Btw, great review. Love my 2018 STi!
As I said before, the 18' have a different factory tune than previous models. That means anything older than 18' (15-17 included). You misunderstood my comment. www.iwsti.com/forums/2015-sti-discussion/299386-we-baselined-2018-sti-our-dyno.html
WE have the exact car lol...except mine is silver. Same amount of miles, tint, nameless axle back, rally armors.....etc. Where was this review before I bought mine?? Lol good video man hopefully this one steers some people towards the car. It’s my first STi and I can’t stop driving it....taking the long way everywhere now
exactly why I bought a brand new 2018 STI base as opposed to a used 2016. The price differences was $3,000. I paid $34,753 for my brand new 2018 and they had a 2016 STI base with 32,000 miles and they wanted $32,000
The shorter gears are for “racing” application. The STI being based as a “rally edition” WRX, the gears are shortened which help you get in the right gear for each corner.
Great review Matt. Just got a crystal black 2017 WRX MT for a daily driver and did both the COBB stage 1 93 and MA Performance stage 1 tunes. I love it but I am regretting not going with the STI. I feel that the WRX needs a stiffer, suspension and sharper handling. Coming from a 2011 BMW 3 series coupe, I miss that awesome, stiff and flat handling. I think the STi would have filled the bill better. I would have gotten rid of that rear wing though, its a bit too much for me.
I know someone who has a 2015 WRX but spent a week with a 2015 STI. He hated the STI. Bad roads that did not upset the WRX too much, caused major issues with the STI. I guess due to the STI's stiffer suspension. Now if you don't have to drive on bad roads a lot, STI could well be a good fit.
Had a bit of a farewell moment at the Subaru booth at the Geneva show a few days ago. It was sadly the last year with the STI there as far as I know. It's such a popular car in Switzerland...
I don't care what anyone says about this beast I'm still in love with it and I rather have this over the boring af Golf R. The RS is cool I'm just not a Ford guy and the CTR is way too flashy and its FWD. People get too focused on horsepower, torque, 0 to 60, etc. This car is about fun. Who cares about the numbers. Most people won't be tracking so it really doesn't matter anyway. 300 to 350 HP is plenty for public roads. My only gripe with the STI is fuel economy. If the next gen STI has 300 HP, the rumble, and better fuel economy I'd buy one.
"boring af Golf R." Haha...riiiight... Nothing boring about smoking STIs all day long. Just because the Golf R has a motor that isn't 10+ years old, actually has CarPlay/Android Auto, and is actually livable on crappy roads doesn't mean it's boring. It just means that the STI is outdated.
Good job Matt. Good to see you back in an STI. You can tell you miss it man. You talk about those smaller turbos and I agree they are so much easier to live with as the power is available almost instantly. The STI is a dog if you are not in the right gear (not to piss off the STI guys- after all I have owned 2 and loved them).Bottom-line the STI is dated but still has a certain charm and a special place in my heart.Either way great review. Hope Subaru does the right thing with the new STI and puts a nice power plant in it .
Current in the market for something fun! Was looking at either an STI, 2013 Mustang GT (prefer the body style vs the newer one) or 3.0T Q50. What’s your thoughts?
It was a fun car in 2004, as was the WRX in 2002. They aren't the world beaters they were back then and Subaru is slow to change anything (turbo FA20 in the WRX is the exception). One of the best cars I've owned to date was my Hawkeye 07 WRX TR.
They are very fun cars. Unfortunately, when and if you mod them with performance upgrades, the engines tend to develop problems or fail. Only downside to the STi is if you do anything other than bolt ons; i.e. bigger turbo, injectors, cam, you have to build the entire engine with forged internals or it will go BOOM!
About to order the nameless axle back now. I bought this exact car about 3 weeks ago and coming from a 370z it is a completely different beast. I love it. Def needs the axle back though, as stock I hear the turbo more than the exhaust.
Kinda glad I got a 17’. Base STi with the upgrade pack. Harmon kardon sound system, keyless entry and nav. Now they just get you with the seats and keyless. I personally don’t notice a difference in the Recaro to the stock seats. I’m 6’7”. The sunroof doesn’t agree with me lol
My daily driver Mazdaspeed 3 will be due for replacement in a couple of years, I'm grateful to have all of these online reviews. This is an awesome car but I'd have a really hard time choosing the STI over a Focus RS or a Golf R.
Hey Matt I'm a huge fan of your channel and Subaru WRX STI car reviews but I have to ask you if you think the 2015 or newer Subaru WRX STI is better than the older 2002 to 2007 Subaru WRX STI s because I had a 04 RS and loved it but always wanted a turbo charged sti. Which generation would you choose??? I don't know which one is better to purchase
The older ones are more raw in many ways, but the new ones handle better along with having the nicer interiors. The newest STIs still drive fantastically well and still have the same engine as the older cars so you still get all the same engine character regardless of whether you go old or new. I hope that helps! Good luck deciding!
The STi is one of the 4 vehicles that I am evaluating now as I will be in the market in the next 6 months. Personally I prefer a little of understeer than oversteer. As of the highly anticipated 2020 model which has never been officially announced by Subaru, I strongly suspect it will be a hybrid because of the overall market direction. The current STi, the Civic Type R, and the Focus RS might be the last of the affordable sports cars.
Have you ever reviewed an Outback? I like your takes and have been researching them. I tried looking through your uploads but didn't catch an Outback review. Preferably 2018.
Some of the reasons I'm considering this car is due to safety, AWD, Manual, reliability and its the only sports sedan that holds its value for resale, its crazy how some of these cars can have high mileage 80,000+ and still be worth over $20,000. Correct me if i'm wrong but what other vehicle holds its value that well in the same category.....other vehicles i'm considering are 4runner, tacoma(i know there are not in the same class but its between these 3).
None in that class, with the possible exception of the Civic Type R, which probably will also hold a high resale value (but still too early to tell.) In stock form, the cars are usually reasonably reliable if cared for well and the owner understands the things that this engine absolutely hates. However, if not treated well or not maintained correctly, engine issues are very common. If you are considering used, it is worth every penny to have an independent and competent Subaru performance shop perform a PPI with a compression/leak-down tests, especially because the cost of replacing a short block in these is much more expensive than most cars due to more labor hours when working with its boxer engine.
I think people worry far too much about power numbers and not nearly enough about their own ability to control a car by instinct in any situation and the ability for the car to be controlled (suspension tuning, alignment, brakes, TIRES, etc). Any idiot can kill their self in a Dodge Demon. A skilled driver can have fun in just about anything you put them behind the wheel of. I think of that lady I'm going the ruin the spelling of her name Svena Schmidtt or similar that smoked Jeremy Clarkson's time around the track ... in a cargo van. 300 hp is enough from the factory. It allows the executive who buys it to just drive the damn thing while the enthusiast gets to PERSONALIZE it. Put it this way; they increase power, you are going to pay for it because it costs R&D and you still will not be happy. If it had 330 hp right now, you'd want 360. If it had 400, you'd want 450. Doesn't matter what they do, people will want more. But what does matter is costs after the fact to a lot of people. Watch the insurance rates climb when the 400-500 hp next gen comes out. Right now I can buy a brand new one and my yearly premium would be around $50/mo. It would not be that with 500 hp on the showroom floor; but I can get to 500 hp with a turbo, E85 fuel system upgrade, and a tune without 200/mo insurance payments. If they increased the power to 330 ... whatever they did, most likely, because it still isn't 'enough', you are going to swap out/off the part they invested in anyway. I was curious to the road feel between the gens; it isn't talked about ... from what I gathered, the 17-18 transition made it 'softer'. In the video it was implied it was a bit softer in the suspension and the steering felt a hint more numb. Seems like 15-17 is right for me; I don't need numb, I have a car like that already, the more raw the better and I feel this is one of the last of its breed in the mass market. Next gen will be great, but I'm guessing jumping balls deep with an LCD gauge cluster like the new BRZ, electric steering rack, etc. Basically the VA WRX served a test bed for these things; hell, if they did a CVT that could handle the power ... that would be sweet; they'd sell a lot in Australia.
how reliable are these things ive always wanted one but i hear mixed reviews on reliability. I know most of them blow under heavy mods but what if im just going for something like an exhaust and tune?
Has he had any issues with pulling. I'm a 2018 sti owner my car has 8000 plus miles been through three sets of tires and several alignments and it still pulls to left?
Hi people , Im looking at one of these 2018 premium models of these with a sunroof , it has 62000 miles on it and costs US $32500 ...if it passes a full check from a subaru specialist and compression test is this an ok deal ? considering how expensive they are getting month by month ? seems tidy paint and intererior wise and has service history and is stock with one owner.
I wish they would do an FA25 or atleast for 2020 redesign the EJ with a semi closed deck, stronger internals and a bump in hp. Itd be nice to be able to have a reliable 400-450whp stock block bolt on STI.
You can still get an uel header for the wrx and have it sound the same. But idk why you would. As good as that boxer rumble sounds with a uel header. I’ve heard a el wrx that is by my job and I pop my head up every time because it sounds exotic. I think it’s the only $30k car I’ve heard that I think a $200k+ car is going by.
Also I want to mention. I love the new interior. But one of my favorite cars of all time is the evo 8 & 9 rs. Sometimes simpler is better. I’d take those over any other evo or sti anyday. But they’re the hardest to find.

Honestly, 300 hp is just about perfect for public roads.
not for how heavy modern cars got, 400hp is minimum, camries been making 300hp since the early 2000s..
Camarys only started making 300hp at the crank in 2018 and a whole lot heavier for the v6 .. early 2000 was right below 200hp......
letsroll no they've had the 3.5 2GR that's been making 270 hp since like 2006.

As of the highly anticipated 2020 model which has never been officially announced by Subaru, I strongly suspect it will be a hybrid because of the overall market direction. The current STi, the Civic Type R, and the Focus RS might be the last of the affordable sports cars.
hybrid sti will cost 7 million yen in japan
Nothing affordable about those
Loves you reviews. Was happy you see u loved the genesis coupe. I own one
If you are considering used, it is worth every penny to have an independent and competent Subaru performance shop perform a PPI with a compression/leak-down tests, especially because the cost of replacing a short block in these is much more expensive than most cars due to more labor hours when working with its boxer engine.
love it , great video. Back to the good old days :)!
That road looked awesome to drive!
I love how giddy you get when you go WOT in your reviews :)
If only I could jump into the video and take a drive in it right now xx
9:15 thats exactly how I felt the first time I drive one!...🤩
Get the 2021. They will be like the last Evo. Will be a collector car for sure and will hold their value
Amazing review Matt.
The Subaru WRX is my DREAM CAR.
Matt, if you had to choose between a Civic type r and an STI, which would you choose and why?
He is so wholesome
Great video brother. One of my favorite cars still. So when is your bullet coming? I am loving my 18 GT
Thanks! Should be arriving around July.
Matt Maran Motoring can’t wait
Love my 2018 STI Spec R every time i turn it on dat burble sound 😍
The green calipers match with any color
i am in LOVE with this car
Look how fine that is. Balance
how reliable are these things ive always wanted one but i hear mixed reviews on reliability. I know most of them blow under heavy mods but what if im just going for something like an exhaust and tune?
If you don't mod it heavily (even if you mod it and use common sense) and keep up on maintenance you will be fine
That color is beautiful!
Welcome back subaruwrxfan
Love this rally car going to try to buy 1 in like 6 months
Has he had any issues with pulling. I'm a 2018 sti owner my car has 8000 plus miles been through three sets of tires and several alignments and it still pulls to left?
If you’re using the paddle shift do you need to use the 3rd pedal or is that only if ur using stick?
Do u have to still do the old fancy ebreak In newer manual model cars when up hill so it won’t roll back ?
What’s up everybody, Subaruwrxfan here!!
Is a Subaru WRX fan
Doesn't introduce himself as subaruwrxfan when reviewing a friggin STI!
I am disappoint.
Love the exhaust sound
Hi people , Im looking at one of these 2018 premium models of these with a sunroof , it has 62000 miles on it and costs US $32500 ...if it passes a full check from a subaru specialist and compression test is this an ok deal ? considering how expensive they are getting month by month ? seems tidy paint and intererior wise and has service history and is stock with one owner.
That enjine sound ahhhhhh ... soo good
This man had a big ass smile when he put his foot down LMAO meaning he having fun.
The humming sound from the exhaust seems to be a bit loud from this car. Can it actually be daily driven?
I wish they would do an FA25 or atleast for 2020 redesign the EJ with a semi closed deck, stronger internals and a bump in hp. Itd be nice to be able to have a reliable 400-450whp stock block bolt on STI.
Price tag $55000
awesome man I love this car but is it better than Chevrolet camaro and Ford Shelby mustang ecoboost
you really love to drive. nice vid.
"What's up everybody Subaruwrxfan here with another car review!"
The old back road for Matt.
Buddy had a Stage 2 WRX and it sounds like a civic fart can. I told him that and a few months later he got the STi
This gonna beat every thing
Im getting this car next month!
