The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Review

- Tears of the Kingdom is a triumph of open-ended game design that pays homage to the best parts of the Zelda franchise's own storied history--and sometimes exceeds them.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is so much more than a sequel to Breath of the Wild. While this newest entry in the Zelda franchise is most recognizably similar to that 2017 game, it builds upon the foundation so thoroughly and transformationally that it feels like a revelation. This is The Legend of Zelda at its finest, borrowing the best pieces and qualities from across the franchise's history and creating something new that is emotionally resonant, captivating, and endlessly rewarding.

The fact that this game has this many systems and virtually no bugs is unbelievable. No one makes games quite like Nintendo does.
Its bugs are part of the game just like in the first one 😂
Sony does kid
@@michaelmyersplays4992 sony does fun intractable movies
@@michaelmyersplays4992 What Sony does well is story heavy single player adventures.
Botw and Totk are both sandbox open worlds with immergent gameplay, Sony never made a single game of this genre in their entire existance.
Even their open world stuff is still story heavy adventure, any open world elements of it are just Ubisoft formula 1.5. Thats not a dig at their games, its just that its not the main focus of these games. So tldr: entirely not comparable.
don't compare it with western developers
This is how triple AAA games should be... No 40+gb patches, no we'll fix it with an update, no oh well just bare with us, no excuses just an amazing, beautiful game. Nintendo you did it again....
This is how an open world game of the AAA type should be done and I've got a feeling game's will definitely borrow and copy it's ideas for years to come 🎉🎉🎉
very true
I dont think they are getting enough credit for how polished this game is. The fact that they created an entire system based around physics and did not end up with a buggy mess of a game is amazing.
Nintendo has patented many of these systems I believe so it can be hard to copy it legally. Then again, most developers wouldn't even be able to code something like this, so I'm sure this will be a once in a lifetime experience.
They already did.... 6 years ago
@@xmxh9596they delayed the game for over a year just to polish it!! More studios need to look at Nintendo as an example of how to really run a game dev cycle
This review has more spoilers than all the reviews out there. The only review I've seen that actually shows the inside of dungeons and even explains the story itself even with gameplay
Yes, it should be tagged with CONTAIN SPOILERS
I've beaten the game. And this really is not spoiling very much, to be honest.
I mean compared to the other reviews I saw this shows more but the game is quite big. trust

Another perfect 10 in the halls of Zelda. There's a reason why this series is a benchmark for many others
Because the fandom wills it. The game looks terrible performance wise and visually it’s like having glaucoma.
Mario and Zelda are still benchmarks for videogame quality after all this time, it's honestly incredible. It's a shame the Pokemon games can't be this good despite being the most profitable IP ever.
"Others" want a piece of the audience, that's all.
Almost as if they just all blanket get 10s regardless.
@@Marlboro-lights1 Despite of the severe performance limits of the hardware TOTK probably transcends that and still actually deserves a 10. I'll play it on Yuzu for 1440p 60fps though.
If botw was held back by the wii u, and totk is this big, imagine when the zelda team get their hands on a more powerful nintendo console in the future. And i’m talking creatively not on the technical side.
Exactly
or they could just stop holding themselves back and make a PS5 or PC game
Yeah but Nintendo will always favour gameplay and innovation over graphical fidelity. Don't need to waste millions on polygons when your games play this perfectly
Though unfortunately, Nintendo is always a generation (or TWO!) behind in console power. My old a$$ computer (which lacks a dedicated graphics card, mind you) should NOT be able to run a current generation console game, yet I've been playing Switch games on it, umm, recently...
they've never focus on performance when it comes to making these games, they will favor the experience, story and mechanics/gameplay over the looks no matter how strong the system is. WindWaker was on a System that was stronger than the competition at the time and could've make something that looked entirely different yet they went for simple Cell shaded and added a lot of charisma to its presentation with hundreds of different characters that each had their own look and personality without any feeling generic. you never know what the team will do but we can always expect something incredible from the team.
Jesus GameSpot a spoiler warning for some of the story bits would be cool so I don’t have a heart attack.

Nintendo is a great company. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how they can make even simple gameplay seem revolutionary, because of how much they focus on the experience itself and all the little details.
Wow GameSpot seriously put so many gameplay spoilers in the review
Gamespot never gives away 10s. That's why I come here first for a game review.
Just finished the game. It’s absolutely crazy how nintendo managed to rewrite the definition of ”perfect”. If Breath of the wild was ”A” then Tears of Kingdom is nothing less than ”A+”
lol my man just told the whole plot
In insight, this is disgusting to watch.. even showed stuff he didn't need to.
Is it me or is it only western made games that are unfinished? I’ve been noticing eastern games actually take the time to let their games bake to it could…ya know….BE A BETTER PRODUCT
I still don’t understand how people can overlook less than stellar graphics and frame rate for a $90 CAD game in 2023. Not sayin TOTK isn’t amazing, but it has that flaw that everyone is overlooking because of Nintendo bias. Everyone harps on Sony and Microsoft when games have similar fps and mediocre graphics yet Nintendo can get away with it…
Still, kudos to the developers for making a great game that makes the most of a severely outdated console
My favorite games of all time can fit on a tiny 12mb cartridge. Games are about gameplay first and always.
graphics quality does not equal price tag, this is even more true now that Unreal Engine 5 is out
Less Nintendo bias and more just Zelda bias.
Even Nintendo fans are starting to be against Nintendo itself.
@@stuff3862 Yes, but performance is a part of the experience. All Nintendo fans and Nintendo game reviewers throw that out the window specifically for Nintendo games alone (except when it comes to Pokémon because that was broken). Like I said, giving TOTK a 10 means that it can’t be improved, which is false because it can in terms of graphics and performance. I’m not saying the game isn’t great because it is (just like Legends Arceus was), but it’s not perfect. At least half a point should be taken off for that alone. The game would be 10/10 on better hardware tho, like people who are emulating the game on computers would say
@@Blueybeak You fail to realize that fps does affect a game, especially an action one. You might disagree with the visuals, but any performance dip affects the experience, and even consistent 30 fps is embarrassing for 2023. Again, I blame Nintendo, not the developers, for this. Just imagine how playing Zelda with a better frame rate would be.

That ending was amazing. You guys really loved it.
My switch will never glitch. Most reliable platform i have ever used. Granted I’ve only played botw and totk on it
Sky, Earth, Underground... so what you're saying is Tears of the Kingdom has many... tiers... to the Kingdom.
After this, I hope the Legend of Zelda franchise goes back to the Ocarina of Time era.
I want that too but its so unlikely
i see the the review in ign and it has the zombies from oot and some nightmer fuel like mm
Zelda game sales were actually declining because too many of the games were like Ocarina of Time. Too predictable and too much of the same.
There’s no way they go back, it’s not in there best interest, botw style Zelda has gained them massive amounts of players and people they didn’t play Zelda. OoT style Zelda is over, an age past. I love OoT and Majoras mask but you gotta know when your time is up. The real question is how long can they keep cranking out botw Type Zelda games before it gets stale.

He totally forgets the Divine Beasts were walking, mobile automatons. As such, you could 'see everything' with one field of view - and indeed they were very limited and simple by design and structure. The new Dungeons in Tears are nothing like that lol. Masterpiece, again. Zelda forever.
I have the impression that they have said too much in this analysis...
I've beaten the game and I really don't think nearly enough was done to justify 6 entire years of development. Odds are if you had issues with botw then you will have issues with this game because it is virtually identical in most ways. Even the story is told in the same exact way. Underworld is okay I guess but basically all it is is just more square mileage to walk around and not a lot more. Shrines get repetitive and there is almost never a point to exploring caves or fighting enemies. Basically amounts to Ubisoft tier filler content only worse because you get nothing out of it besides a piddly gem or a bundle of arrows. Not enough of anything substantial has been changed. Should have cut the number of shrines in half and doubled the dungeons. It's a shame because the new mechanics are cool but are not enough and certainly deserve to be in a game more ambitious than this.

I agree. Link hasn’t uttered a single word in 35 years. I’m sure he has plenty to talk about besides his gasps while swinging the sword.

It looks like the same GD game. I don't want to hear CoD is the same game anymore...

So if Durability is still a thing, are their better treasures now? It felt pointless to find a weapon in a chest knowing it would break in like 5 swings.

@@avocadeous Weapons do not break faster. It's about the same rate as in BotW. Obviously you're supposed to fuse to the decayed weapons to increase the durability to its normal level and make the weapon do more damage.
Most of the problems BotW had are still present.. After 6 years Nintendo simply decided that they were perfect the first time and changed nothing.
How was your time with the game, miss Rachel?
@@Big_Dai I’ve been having fun playing it but I agree with you. It still feels empty and even though I appreciate there are more side quests, they still feel pretty pointless when all you get is a dish you could have easily made yourself or a muddlebud or something. Or when you find a treasure chest in a secret place and it just has a mediocre weapon that will break immediately, regardless if you fuse it or not. It’s still enjoyable to play but I wish that the characters and world were more complex and immersive. @@sayhirachel If anything, I'm glad you are enjoying. God knows it's hard to truly be able to properly enjoy something. I did too! The beginning and acclimation to the new Systems, as well as the discovery of all Zonai devices were the best part. The start and conclusion of the story fekt much better this time around, though it all feels like Nintendo was making some sort of amends .. or grievances they had with BotW? Makes me wonder if having to release it for both the Wii U and Switch had a negative effect.
But since most systems are pretty much the same, the drop in excitement is pretty steep and rather soon. I didn't like combat the first time around, and didn't this time. And the map has all the landmarks of a land I spent 400+ hours in, robbing it from the magic this time.
And you put it very eloquently : "by making a discovery somewhere, you discover it everywhere".

In this day and age, when 10/10 means nothing anymore (unlike a time when OoT was one of the sole 10/10 reviews ever), the whole review felt like a logical justification for this final score.
The narration, the explaination, the sentiment of love and admiration for the game that the narrator transpires throughout his whole review had me smiling from start to finish.
I'd just be mindful of the Spoiling part when it comes to the story by letting people know some elements of the story will be revealed (although it concerns only the beginning of the game, some still want to discover it all by themselves).
Maybe this game isn't worth this score after all, maybe Zelda games are always held in such high esteem that the scores they get are a bit too much, maybe.
But watching this video was a beautiful essay regarding the admiration from a random gamer to a piece of culture.
Kudos to you Steve Watts.
It's easily worth the full score. Truth is the game is so advanced there's nothing else on the market that can compete.
