RIP, gone too soon! What a legend. I still remember rooting for him to set the Red Sox all time Win record. He fell just shy of Cy Young and Roger Clemens. We'll miss you, Tim!
I was so infatuated with this team as a kid, Garciaparra, Wakefield, Nixon, Millar, Ramirez, Martinez, Ortiz, Damon, Giambi, Varitek. They awakened a deep love for the game in a young man that had no real connection with Baseball up to that point. Thank you boys!
4:30 that's me holding up Wake's jersey behind the dugout at his 200th W! I was lucky enough to get a game ball and he autographed it a few years later at a premiere of the Knuckleball! documentary. Ive had the opportunity to meet Wake a few times, amazing dude...unlike some other players I've encountered...
this guy is pure class. his involvement with the redsox foundation and other humanatrium projects he is truly a hall of famer in life as a man and sure enough as ball player. the way he talks about others is refreshing especially this day and age when the news makes you think we all hate eachother. pure class
@@taylorstacy1229 instead of The Red Sox not letting anybody wear Clemens' coveted #21 number, for whatever reason, Wakefield's number must be retired this coming season, as He did far more for the team than Roger ever did. They retired Pesky's number #6, for the same reason they should give Tim his rightful credits...
When you consider he pitched in the steroid age and a hitters park (Fenway) he still was slightly better than average. For his career he allowed 5 runs per game (including unearned as knuckleballers allow more unearned runs because of passed balls for knuckleball) but according to baseball reference the average based on league and ballpark was 5.12 runs per game so he still was slightly better then an average pitcher who ate up a lot of innings. Although he had some good and bad years.
Tim Wakefield got me back into watching the Sox. I was born and raised on Yaz, Fisk, Lynn and Evans but by my late 20's had fallen out of following the 'Boys of Summer'. Plus they had broken my heard in '78 and '86. Then in '95 I happen to be channel surfing... and I see this dude pitching mad dancing flutterballs. I got back on the bandwagon, and was rewarded in less than a decade. Ohh ya... did I mention, I've been rewarded 3 times since then... and the latest is just as sweet as the first! Thanks Tim, for your crazy mad knuckler that brought me back into 'The Faith of Tessie.
haha i was just playing 05 with him. Ironically, Steve Sparks was the opposing pitcher and he throws a Knuckleball as well so I got a taste of my own medicine. He threw a 9 inning shutout on me, the bastard. Wakefield did get hurt in the 3rd though, so...might have been a 12 inning 0-0 game with the starters still in if not for that!
Samn Wakefield Hmmm, let's see..... Niekro had ~2000 more innings pitched, ~1000 more strikeouts, ~100 more wins, ~60 higher career WAR, and a career ERA 1 full run lower. Need I say more?
yet... at the time niekro started throwing a knuckleball ..the knuckleball wasnt that common ..but wakefield has had more success with it than this niekro guy ...wakefield has thrown the most devastating knuckleballs ever seen ..and thats a fact..so do ur math and study wakefield carreer with it as a main pitch in his arsenal
Samn Wakefield Lol, I didn't realize a clear cut stats comparison was so hard to comprehend. Niekro was measurably better in every significant statistical category by wide margins. How's that for "math". Have you even studied Niekro? Checked his stats or watched some footage? Or do you just have your head stuck in the sand?
I like to think the villiage I live in was named after him. Starting a knuckle baller in a playoff game is all you need to know about his expertice. As Mark Twain once said, "Stand back and cut me loose."

Tim was a castaway picked up by the Red Sox and the knuckleball made his career. Pennant fever came to Boston most summer and I remember taking my daughter to one of those games in the bleachers. Real sad, great person.
@@TheSicariuss fair, but a 90 even 89 fastball could be disgusted as a knuckleball coming, if you were paid millions of dollars to do that every 4th or 5th day, I think it’s a goldmine nobody has opened up.
Not really. I compare Tim Wakefield in the later years of his career (like 2005-2012) to R.A. Dickey in his Prime (2009-2013). If you look back on that clip, the pitch was only 60 mph, so a lot more break can occur and more peculiar swings can happen. Also, the ball is knuckling, so while a curveball is thrown with topspin, so a slow curveball will rise up then drop straight down. That is why curveballs tend to hit the dirt often. With a knuckleball, there is no spin at all, so it can really be controlled the the wind, and the handed-ness of the pitcher. Hope that clears it up.
@@hunterlowe6844 From what I understand, the ideal knuckleball does a half-turn on it's way to the plate, so that the turbulence off the slowly-rotating seams makes it dance around.
the lower speed pitch as a hitter looks like dead meat (not that 70-80mph its actually achievable by most) but as a amateur pitcher this guy is amazing one of for the top of record books.
Haha thank god 'm a red sox fan and get to play as him! Actually, Steve Sparks and R.A.Dickey are in the game too. Not sure of any other knuckleballers

I made sure I drafted Wakefield in every fantasy league I had every year. He was also just fun to watch.
Tim Wakefield was the only modern knuckleball pitcher to win 2 world series rings!
And probably the last

I'm certain The Red Sox will have some kind of ceremony and retire his number. Shame he'll never get to see it. ⚾⚾
Can u imagine a 95mph fastball with tim's knuckleball.
It would be insane but the problem is that you’d have to throw the ball in such a way that it would be really easy to tell which pitch is coming
