The joke at the end where Knuckles asked if there’s Grape flavored ice cream caught me off guard. This isn’t that well known even for Sonic fans but canonically Grapes are Knuckles’s favorite food. They REALLY did their research and I fucking love that
I think sonic 1 was a bit of an experiment, therefore it didn’t feature that much sonic lore, and since that was successful, they tried a bit more with this, with the lore and such
That's the challenge with video game movies. You want to please the fans, but you also don't want to alienate general audiences. The movie still has to make money at the end of the day.
When I watched the first Sonic in theaters, I said to myself "That was great, but there is one thing they have to do" and then they immediately did it. When Tails stepped through that portal as an end credit teaser, I knew this franchise was gonna be amazing because it told me these people know what Sonic fans want to see. They had to get through the obligatory first movie before they could really dive into the world of Sonic and embrace it all. And I'm so glad I was right about that. Sonic 2 completely embraces the Sonic-verse and all its lunacy. This movie isn't perfect, but I absolutely love it because it absolutely loves Sonic.
Sonic 2 felt a lot like playing a sonic game. I like that the humans had their own side story outside of the main plot. I totally called the ring swap, and I had a good time. My favorite is when the dancing guy takes his shirt off and he has a tattoo of himself doing the same pose on his chest. That’s just good visual comedy
I love that this movie made its human cast likeable and HILARIOUS. I loved the human characters, the Tom being Sonic's dad thing I still found a little weird. Idk, I just prefer them as equals, or letting Sonic be that sorta rambunctious teen who loves their family, but wants to be seen as an equal who can still always count on his family and values it. Him being referred to as a "kid" was a little odd to me, even though he's like 15

It was hilarious and the plot twists and references to the game topped it all
I love how the human characters kinda let people who aren’t diehard fans of Sonic still have fun with the movie. To me, it feels like Paramount struck a balance between pandering to Sonic fans and pandering to people who were just curious about the movie. I applaud thee, Paramount, you made a masterpiece
The moment the rings appeared on screen i went "oh god they're gonna use this for that trope" But it didn't overstay it's welcome and quickly switched to a finally plot relevant scene, so it was ok
Hes actually 15 in the games not 16 sjsjjs not to far off but still Edit(4/21/22) y'all stop mentioning Generations to me. I'm not a huge sonic fan and I didn't know about Generations but from what I've seen looking up Generations its an anniversary to the sonic games themselves and not Sonics Birthday Anniversarys and Birthdays aren't exactly the same thing. Please stop replying to me about Sonic Generations/gen Edit 2 (4/21/22): just was made aware Sonics birthday was celebrated in Generations, I didn't know this as when I was Googling it what came up didn't mention this. Please be respectful by the way, not everyone knows every sonic game and not everyone knows every detail about sonic either. Yelling at me is completely unnecessary and just plain old rude especially when I've made it clear I didn't even know of sonic generations. Also to the person calling me a gatekeeper for correcting someone who i thought was incorrect but turns out im wrong and I completely accept that? How the ever loving fuck is that gatekeeping
I saw this movie in theatres and honestly was surprised to see just how much it improved, i thought the way knuckles was portrayed was fantastic as well. A good mix of actually a threat and naive
I know Saber said he was like Thor but I could see a bit of Drax in his character as well with how literal he was. Now I want a Drax and Knuckles movie where the whole movie is just them trying to understand each other.
I like how they went for the original feel of knuckles from the comics, a steeled warrior that knew nothing but tradition The only real difference is that he didn't guard the emerald for his entire life this time, but instead just spent the same dedication looking for it AND it ended with him as the emerald protector which is a nice twist
maybe its just me but i think they made knuckles a little bit to stupid. I know he is naive and was more than 1 time tricked by robotnik, but i never saw him as a complet idiot.
"And you did great too!" Yup. What's the dog's name, though? Because I could have sworn she said a different name than Sonic did when he was home alone.
The coolest thing about the owls is that they’re barely a thing in the game. The writers just saw some imagery of owls in the backgrounds of the levels in sonic 1 for the genesis and they took that and RAN with it 🥁. Superrrrrr cool.
@@OM3GA-Z3RO They have been depicted as a war-like race a lot of times, so the story makes sense for, "They made this super powerful things and the owls said 'Nope'." I'd be curious how they bring Tikal into it. But right now they already have a challenging balance - Amy, Rouge and Shadow at the very least need to be introduced. In this one it already felt like Tails didn't get enough time and some of his parts got a little rushed. It works out okay, but I think them needing to put in their human characters takes time away from the real MCs. I'm hoping that they kind of "move" to Station Square at some point and get away from needing to spend as much time on the humans, because the other characters really need that time to be properly developed. They've already done enough to give us a reason why the MCs would want to save people. And there's no reason they couldn't appear in the background. But the absolute MVP of Sonic 2 was Knuckles, and Shadow, Rouge and Amy would need to be the MVPs of Sonic 3. That is, if they do Amy. Amy's intro comes with Metal, obviously, so maybe they'll shift things around and have Shadow's storyline come first and then do Amy? It's hard to say how they'll do this. I'm just afraid they won't let Amy be herself (a big Sonic fan who grows into her own hero, similar to Tails, but on her own path).
I hope so too. There’s so much that they could do with this. And potential antagonist’s like Shadow, Chaos, and metal sonic. Let’s hope they never touch Zavok because he’s lame.
Let’s just hope that potential isn’t jinxed as we’re moving on to territory Sega & Sonic team tried recovering for years, a positive non toxic franchise based off this universe which the sonic director Jeff Fowler is calling it the Sonic Cinematic Universe or SCU
Sonic 2 was a blast. Good entertaining family movie. Solid acting, good “moral”, exciting action, funny comedy. Shout again to Jim Carrey for going absolutely ham in the role. Over the top cartoon acting for an over the top cartoonish villain. Just *chef’s kiss* perfect.
The fact they actually got/followed the story correctly took me back abit, i was expecting sonic 2 to be more of the first but nope they actually followed the cannon story line and now I'm excited for the 3rd
For a video game adaptation, this is of unprecedented quality tbh Hope we can see more stuff of this quality in the future (and yes i know the castlevania series was good, but series are easier to get right than a movie)
@@Volfur2251 Me too, I'm also so excited for what 3 will offer especially Knuckles' spin-off show. Though I hope it won't goe to off the rails like Spider-Man 3 & the Dark Knight Rises.
I wonder what really gave the impression that Sonic’s world seemingly didn’t have any humans in the first place. I mean, there are plenty of human-looking cities in the Genesis games, so was it really that jarring when more humans apart from Robotnik/Eggman were introduced?
@@geoffreyrichards6079 It was probably the Archie comics or the SatAM cartoon that treated Eggman like the only human in a world of furries. That's my guess.
@@aircraftcarrierwo-class Somewhat with SatAM since Robotnik and Snively were the only confirmed humans in the series (the one-off character Lazaar is debatably human). In the original Archie continuity, though, there were two distinct races of humans - your regular humans who survived the apocalypse via preservation, and your Mobian-evolved humans (which is what Robotnik and Snively are).
@@BonaparteBardithion There was one more human antagonist in the old games. Someone named Witch Cart, who's a witch flying around in a minecart instead of on a broom. I think she was featured in one of those Tails spinoff games, then never again.
Sonic feels like a young tween in this film, and I think he's meant to be, slowly growing into his teenager game personality. Regardless he's very well defined personality wise in the film actually which is great. And I thought Dad-Tom was cute and a fun build off of what the first film established - it's only because that film was a success we got this amazing second one after all, need to keep it relevant in the trilogy - and tweens need supportive parents.
I agree. We know in the first movie he was sent to earth as a very young child, but we are not told how much later the main part of the movie happens. I got the feeling that he was like maybe 12 or 13 at the most because he does still act like a kid would in most situations.
I actually like Sonic's personality in the movie a bit more than how he's been portrayed in the more recent games, and much more than Sonic Boom. I just really like that he acts more like what we was intended to be, similar to how he is in Sat AM's era, and less like the "4th wall, sarcastic surfer dude" he is with Roger Craig Smith. I just wouldn't mind it if they took influence from what people liked about the movie, and useit to reimagine the games a bit. Just from how they've fell off for so long not really knowiong who the characters were anymore. These movies did something rare, where the mascot character actually genuinely feels like the audience its marketed to without the "hey fellow kids on tik tok" feel. I like that this sonic is naive, optimistic a it of a goofball but trying to find himself through these more grounded yet world saving situations and actually making Eggman/Robotnik a threat again in the plot.
Strangely enough as a lifelong Sonic fan, I actually disagree with the notion that these movies should be fully animated... It wouldn't be nearly as interesting because the live-action aesthetic (while flawed at times) is the only thing that sets these films apart from all other sonic media. We've already had decades of cartoon Sonic interacting with his cartoon friends, going on cartoon adventures, in a cartoon universe (The games, Sonic Boom, etc.) This is our first time seeing Sonic interact with our world and that's the main selling point of the movies. I'm not a fan of the pop culture references and the Alvin & Chipmunks-style family humor, but overall it seems to be working for them and I'm interested to see where it goes next.
Took the words right out of my mouth Lol I 100% agree. I'm a Sonic fan too, but if the movies were just run-of-the-mill Illumination style cartoons, I wouldn't be nearly as interested tbh.
I agree with everything you said. Honestly, I feel like the Pop Culture references really fit for Sonic as a franchise. I do agree the Alvin and the Chipmunk humor is hit or miss with me
I actually really liked the father son dynamic they were going for. The part where Tom and Maddie were willing to die with Sonic really moved me. It shows how much they loved each other. I'm a sucker for family themes what can I say
I really adored that myself, and hope they include Tails & Knuckles in that family as well. Knuckles is clearly the older no nonsense brother, Sonic the middle hyperactive child, and Tails the younger smaller brother ❤💙💛. Then we have the sweet pupper along for the ride lol 😁.
@@IgnatiusBlaze4 I can kinda see what you mean but let's face it sonics was really child like in the first movie compared to the games and some shows where yes sonics shorter than most but was clearly a teenager. As for sabers awkwardness for Tom's dad role I think that's just him.
Bro it's a comedy movie I don't call grown ups a campy movie because it is a comedy movie It's like saying this action movie has to much action and not enough with here is the thing it's a action movie and it's for entertainment laughable bad and laughable good are both almost as bad if you say something is laughable that means you can't take it seriously
Personally, I love the father-son dynamic. I was wondering where they were gonna go with Tom considering that in the lore, Tails and Sonic are best friends. But as soon as I saw the fishing scene I knew that's how they're gonna address it.
honestly, i didn't really pay attention to it They taking Sonic as their son was just... weird in a way, so i just didn't see a reason to focus on it (didn't lead to anything meaningful either) I mean, i guess that them being family would have been even weirder if Sonic was just a friend
@@rompevuevitos222 Imo, I think is a different and out of ordinary take away from the cliche of "friends from another world" stick. It's quite rare nowadays to see adopted parents in these kind of movies
I like the dynamic, but I don't like the "You're not my dad" thing. It kinda didn't go anywhere and didn't feel necessary at all. The fans of the movie, judging from all the fanart and posts, already seen Sonic and the others as a proper family. Feels like something you show, don't tell.
@@JoshtheOverlander Yeah and Sonic was very selfish to this movie. I imagine Sonic to be a little rebellious against authority figures but saying "You're not my dad" was very selfish and ungrateful. Doesn't matter if he's your dad or not, dude is trying to help you. Even friends can help you fix their mistakes. It felt like they were going for a more typical coming of age movie and I understand that to some extent since Sonic hasn't really done anything heroic at this point but he still came off as too ungrateful to like at times.
I felt like it was a generic coming of age story and Sonic saying "you're not my dad" and arguing with Tom about being an anti-hero and not hugging him before he went on vacation was very ungrateful coming from Sonic. Sonic is a little cocky but he is not this much of a twat.
To answer a couple of questions you mentioned: 1) The Owl vs. Echidna stuff is completely unique to the movie universe. While the echidnas are tied to Chaos Emerald lore in the games, their extinction (save for Knuckles) came about due to in-fighting between tribes of the species. No owls involved at all. It's one of those new spins on things that I like that the movies are doing, instead of being strictly 1:1 with game canon. 2) Ozzy (the dog) is fine; he shows up at the end when everybody's playing baseball. It's odd that there's no acknowledgement at all, especially since the house got absolutely wrecked by Robotnik and Knuckles, but eh, we get more Sonic and the gang and Ozzy lives. Can't complain too much. Also, hey, I liked Tom and Maddie being Sonic's new parents. Certainly no wilder than talking animals going super saiyan with magic gems, after all.
I agree with you on Tom and Maddie being parents to Sonic. It doesn’t feel forced and you can even see shades of this direction going in a familial relationship in parts of the first movie. Sonic is still a kid. And Movie!Sonic has been an orphan living on his own for 10 years and starved for connections with other people. Especially after the loss of his first guardian. This couple had loads of great parental moments that came across very natural and it’s just so sweet! And now they adopted Knuckles and Tails too and their family is bigger and happier than ever. I frankly want to see more of this.
I just like to think that after getting away from Robotnik and Knuckles that they go back, pick up Ozzy and then head to Wade to bring him to safety and stuff. Would explain how he got the rings and map with him too. Thats just my headcanon at least.
@@horakhtythecreator6911 im glad that there are people that like Tom and Maddie. Even though I'm there for sonic, its nice to see that the human characters are written with actual purpose in the story. Sonic 2 is where they really shine.
It’s kind of amazing how we’re in a year when the live-action adaptation of Sonic actually is being well-received by fans while the one for Halo is being seen almost as a joke by its respective fans
Its funny since halo and sonic both had very good media adaption's in the past. I am surprised nobody brings up halo legends when they talk about good video game movies. Halo legends was awesome man. It really sucks we got this horrible retelling of the halo lore instead of something like halo legends 2 or a band of brothers style ODST movie.
the main difference is the director of halo didn't even made the effort to read the books, watch shows or play the games of halo so that's why it sucks. when directors gonna learn not to copy avatar the last airbender disaster of a movie it was that bad because they didn't read the books or watch the show
@@xephionsaketzu Yeah, The show barley has any references for fans. Like there are some lore references like the classic camo effect being used, Plasma actually functioning like it does in lore or the proper art style being used. But most of it is just not halo. I mean even though this sonic universe takes place in a one separate from the games. It works. Compared to halo which is nothing like the games. Hell halo legends had a episode that didn't take place in the games called 1337 and it worked really well.
I’m curious about what they have planned for Sonic 3. Bringing in such a loved character like Shadow with such a deep background is a challenge all it’s own. They’ve done such a wonderful job so far I just wish Jim Carrey wasn’t retiring he was such a fantastic eggman
This a hot take but I like the place humans had and the father-son dynamic. It just felt like Sonic and his squad really got a place to connect to the human world, and find a place where he could belong.
Not a hot take, you’re absolutely right. The father-son dynamic is amazing, especially after Sega decided Sonic wasn’t allowed to have parents in the current games/comics. Giving movie Sonic parents is a step in an amazing direction and I’m personally hoping for a mom-bomb next movie. Sonic dropped the dad-bomb, let any of the boys drop the mom-bomb
I agree :) I thought it was very sweet to see Sonic fully embracing the idea of having a family and parents. And the ending with them all playing baseball together was so sweet~ ;w; I wonder if anyone else will join the Wachowski family in the third movie. ^^
I also really loved the father/son dynamic. I feel exactly the opposite of Saber on this one, I appreciate that they made the parent/child aspect of it unambiguous. Lots of stories already do the found family trope while being vague about it in exactly the way he describes, and I'd much rather have at least one movie that has them actually call each other parent/child.
@@BeasEasel I like to imagine Knuckles and Tails will after the family probably moves with their house being kinda destroyed and they were hanging out with the squad at the end and it would be adorable to see Tails at least join the fam so he would be sonic's little brother.
Isnt that also on Sonic Adventure? The humans are there, hopefully people realize that And now they showed Shadow, I knew they were going on that route
THIS WAS SO GOOD, EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST. I love their characterization of Knuckles :] Edit: I believe Sonic is meant to be fifteen or younger in the movie! In my eyes he's still definitely a kid in the movie universe
Fun fact: the director of the movies was also the cgi director of the cutscenes of the shadow the hedgehog game So you KNOW that the movies legit are made by the people who understand and have worked on the games
I will warn you, the movie’s lore around the Master Emerald is a tad different from the game lore. The owls are totally unique to the movie, and are sort of a benevolent replacement for Chaos and his Chao friends in the backstory of the Echidnas. Sonic Adventure and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are probably the two most relevant games to this movie. One thing you might’ve missed out on as someone not too deep into the Sonic lore is just how ABSOLUTELY PACKED this movie is with references. It’s not even just the huge set pieces like the snowboarding segment - it’s also small details like The Mean Bean, the water slide in the temple, and one of the helicopters being the same as the one in the opening of Sonic Adventure 2’s hero storyline.
Well, the old trilogy games did feature some bird statues and carvings inside of ruins and labyrinths. So, they may have been inspired by those background details and decided to expand on them.
Personally, I liked both the wedding sequence and the father-son relationship between tom and sonic. I'd like to think that homestuck trained me for random tangents in stories that almost go on for longer than they should, but the wedding sequence was just so funny that me and my mom where wheezing in theaters. I wouldn't beg for it to last longer like critics do though, it was perfect how it was. The family relationship built between sonic and Tom felt wonderfully done, and I don't think it's weird when considering that there are differences between the classic and modern game sonics. Also, after the first movie, I actually felt weird about them just seeming like friends; they just acted too much like a family. It made me happy to see that elavoratrd on in the second movie, and I really want to see sonic use him along with his friends as motivators in the third movie. That doesn't mean they should drag him around for the whole story though, if they did that then it would get tiring fast
I was getting worried with how long the wedding scene lasted, tough they would waste an unnecessary amount of time on it, but no It was short and actually had something to do with the plot
I’m glad Knuckles is finally getting his redemption as a tough, clever, respected Echidna. Instead of a dumb, lame, and embarrassing Knuckles from other media
I liked that he was less *dumb* and more *oblivious* due to his isolation. he just doesn't understand things because he grew up completely and utterly alone.
I think Sonic is depicted being about 14 instead of 16 like he is in the games. They never confirm his age in the movie but he's definetly more childish (not a complain)
I mean it also makes sense, given that this and the previous movie are more like origin stories for Sonic. In the newer games he's of course much more capable and have clearly had a fair few kerfuffles with Eggman
*Minor spoiler warning* Did anyone notice the "Drowning Danger" theme motif when sonic was losing consciousness before knuckles saved him? I SQUEALED at that detail! All the homages and such are so well done.
I really loved the fact that Knuckles joins Sonic and Tails in the end to protect the Master Emerald, rather than him going back with it to protect it by himself.
In the games. It's Knuckles duty to protect the master emerald from any evil threats so he lives all by his own in angel island The movie was more on a different take with the character
Something that I noticed when comparing the two movies was that the first one was very safe. They didn't know how a Sonic movie would do, and made a basic, kinda generic plot that they could throw Sonic into. There are millions of road trip movies about the reluctant parent and the over-excited child, so it would be likely to sell well. With this one, however, they leaned much more heavily into the lore of the series, and even added some stuff themselves(the owls, for instance). Overall them making that decision made this movie way better than the first one. Heck, even Tails's backstory being the same one from the game series made it feel like the movie was made more for fans than the first one. But you could still walk into the movie knowing no previous lore and still understand what's going on, knowing things from the games just makes it better. This movie was far better than the first one, and I can't wait for the third one, it's going to be epic.
Yeah when I saw Sonic 2 in theaters people were literally cheering and clapping during the big reveal in the post credit scene. You usually don't see that kind of response in movies that aren't Marvel. This franchise has fans and it is clear that it is catering to both the fans and the generic audience, which is impressive since most movies that try both fail at both.
In the movies at least here. They kind of changed Sonic's age range. He's portrayed as being around 13 years old rather than his normal 15 years in the games. Knuckles in game was given 16-17 and tails 8 years old. Not sure of tails and knuckles in this movie but I'm figuring tails is maybe 6-8 and knuckles may be 15. This movie was a blast and I'm glad you covered and enjoyed watching it!
I mean the classic games I'd say maybe he's around 10 which would make sense here in the 1st couple movies, whereas in modern games thanks to the Heroes manual he's 15, Tails 8, and Knuckles 16. So maybe there will be a bit of a time skip... that or maybe the irl time and in movie time is mirroring, it's been what 2 years since the 1st movie? So 2025 Sonic would be 15, right in time for the more modern Sonic age.
@@IgnatiusBlaze4 Yeah that's what I was thinking as well. I also like to think they keep stating Sonic is a 'kid' within the movies due to well we all know how the darker side of this fandom works... -coughs- So perhaps this is also an attempt to with some hopes have people cool it with their weirder hobbies.
Even when they have super forms too... cough cough... Shadow, Silver, Blaze, etc cough! At least the "classic" games gives other characters super forms we can play as.
@@lynxfresh5214 it's a really shitty thing too that sega retconned this and made it so only male hedgehogs can go super. Not only is that technically racist it's also sexist. Not only that it's shooting you in the foot with all the cool merch you could make that you would miss out on.
I'm glad they went the full on parent-son dynamic with the story. Cause that's how it felt at the end of the first movie. Tom and Maddie are old enough to be surrogate parents to Sonic. And it felt like Tails and Knuckles kind of got adopted at the end too. It was really sweet.
Sonic 2 did the thing that I've been asking the Transformer movies to do forever have the main actual franchise characters in the spotlight( you know just what the movie is called) and keep the human characters no one really cares about in the background. the funny part is I went to the bathroom during the wedding scene and I came back right when they went back to the actual stuff🤣
Did we watch the same movie where the human characters interrupt the film multiple times with stupid wedding scenes and bring a really good movie to screeching halt?
I agree, the wedding scene was pointless and boring. What makes me angry it's not giving screen time to the little girl of the first sonic movie. She is way more likable than her mother Rachel. Personal opinion, I don't like Rachel humor. Also it's rare to see child actors that are not annoying. She deserved better, I am sure she will go far if given the chance.
Funny you should say that since this is pretty much Paramount's biggest succesful franchise since Transformers. At least of what didn't get gobbled up by other studios... (looking at you Disney buying the MCU rights)
Sonic is usually 14, And Ben tends to voice younger characters like Randy Cunningham and Dewey Duck so, he’s definitely meant to be an actual kid, only just a teen really.
@@amesstarline5482 exactly, and even then Ben makes his voice higher for sonic (big fan of RC9GN, I’ve been binging it) so it’s obvious he’s trying to make him as child like as possible
I want Saber to read the Sonic Archie comics and see how insane shit gets in those. Especially with Ken Penders trying to sue Paramount because other echidnas are in this and without knowing that whole insane story and Saber would find that fascinating
Just be wary. The Arhcie comics never represented Japanese Sonic Cannon. I'm saying this because people act like the American cannon is the only valid one
@@alchemistofsteel8099 That's mostly because it gives almost every character a lot of backstory, unlike the games where Shadow, Blaze, and Silver are practically the only ones who have any; also there is a lot of worldbuilding (not always good, but it's there).
I find it absolutely adorable and endearing that my dad, who has only ever played 2 video games which have nothing to do with the Sonic franchise, is so excited to watch Sonic 2 in cinemas that he wakes me up at 3 in the morning to ask when its showing date is.
@@iluxsio9582 It's actually showing today in cinemas, and my dad is practically bouncing off of the walls from excitement. He's kind of a tsundere though, and he keeps on saying that *I'm* the one who wanted to watch the movie in the first place whenever someone asks why some 45 year old man is going to watch Sonic 2 of all the movies that was showing, LMFAO! My horrible mother, however, is being such a buzzkill about not wanting to watch the movie which I find annoying. I originally wanted to watch Secrets of Dumbledore except it shows an hour into half of Sonic 2, and my Dad really wanted to watch it with me since he keeps forgetting everyone's names and I know a ton about the lore in the Sonic games and animations. So yeah, he's normally a chill disciplinarian type of figure, but he has a fondness for talking blue hedgehogs - and the Donut Lord, of course.
@@bananabro1010 He's got more sweet moments, but it's pretty rare and in between. To answer your question if the dog died: no, he didn’t. He shows up at the end of the film when the main cast are in the last scene before the credits. (Trying to prevent spoilers, but the dog is good!)
I thought he might've shown up for a second right after the house got hit too, though I can't remember where. I was wondering about the dog for most of the scene.
10:38 I actually kind of loved this relationship honestly. It like, gives the humans a reason to be there, and centers the film around a message about family. Its a bit generic, but its nice.
I really enjoyed this movie! Could have done with a little less of the whole wedding B-plot, but it's whatever. Another solid performance from Jim Carrey as Eggman, such a perfect casting! I was admittedly nervous about how they would handle Knuckles, but overall they did a good job summing up his origin and motivations. And I was pleasantly surprised by how well of a job Edris Elba did voicing him! Casting an already established VA for Tails was a nice touch! Overall: This franchise continues to prove that movies based on a video game series CAN work! It just takes proper care to do the source material justice To be a little nerdy for just a moment: they changed the lore slightly. In the OG series (mainly video games, and comics), Knuckles is the guardian of the master emerald and only teams up with Robotnic (at first) because he is tricked into believing that Sonic wants to steal it for himself. All a rouse by Robotnic of course, yadda yadda lol
in the movie theres also this whole thing where the chaos emeralds together form the master emerald despite in the games there being scenes with both the master emerald and chaos emeralds in the same place. Its fine tho lol
@@tiriangaming2379 In the movie when Knuckles reformed the Master Emerald the chaos emeralds weren't anywhere to be seen. I think Sonic sent them away when he depowered. So that maybe establishes them as seperate things.
I really loved the movie, Tails and Knuckles were a really great addition and they were portraits wonderfully. I really liked how they essentially adapted the plot of Sonic 2 into a movie. I did think the later part of the wedding scene was a little long, but it’s forgivable. I’m glad we also saw them work in G.U.N. The final scene was absolutely amazing as well. I can’t wait for the 3rd one. I thought it was very enjoyable.
The last third was great, Loved to see the Labyrinth/ death egg. But.. there was a lot of stuff that wasn't needed. Maybe I was just too hungover when I saw it, but Mehhhh. I like that they are going to wards the sonic adventure Timeline. Guaranteed Rouge will make an appearance in the next one Saber
And shadow is already confirmed to be in the next one as he was in the post credit. And i hope this movie franchise will continue beyond sonic 3 as well. By introducing even more sonic material. Like Silver and Blaze, and seeing Mephiles in live action would be so cool
I agree where the human characters aren't the best, but that bridezilla scene where she's in the golf cart and Barracuda is playing in the background had me howling. We need more of that lady please, and Jim Carrey is a gem as Robotnik.
this movie made me happier than a movie's made me in a very long time. as somebody's who quite versed in sonic lore from different genres, it's so refreshing to see sonic be just... a kid. I think making him younger in these movies was genuinely one of the best choices they could've made. he's a kid, they acknowledge that he's a kid, and he gets to be silly and a bit cringey and he gets to grow. I thought sonic 2 really handled that aspect well of focusing on the aftermath of the first movie- "so you saved the world, what now?" and shows how sonic struggles with trying to force being a hero and wanting to grow up and be ready, and ultimately has him accept that yeah, he's still a kid, and he can't be a hero all on his own. it's a very refreshing take on his character that I really appreciate the movies going for. he's emotional, he acts impulsively and doesn't think things through, he makes dumb decisions and does dumb things, and I love it! genuinely one of my favourite versions of sonic as a character. in terms of the human characters, I actually like them quite a lot and I love what they bring. tom and maddie are just genuinely good people, who have a really good relationship, and who are fully believable as parents. the one form of sonic media im not super familiar with is the comics, so I dont know how heavily involved sonic's family is in those (especially the Archie run), but seeing sonic get to have parents was just really nice. I've been saying since the first movie that tom and maddie adopted sonic- I mean sure, tom, call him your friend, but you guys secretly moved his stuff into your house AND you tucked him in at night, so we all know the truth there- and to see it really emphasized in sonic 2 that yeah, they adopted him, they're his parents and they all love each other was really nice. I think these movies do so well because they actually listen to the fans and you can tell. from sonic's redesign, to the furthering of the found family narrative with sonic and the wachowskies, hell to how they made stone VERY obviously in love with robotnik- that was a big thing in the movie fandom! they listened to everything and incorporated a lot into sonic 2 and you could tell. I've been burned by so many sequels and so many movies set within the same universes (MCU, Star Wars, DC, etc) that to see a sequel embrace everything the fans had to say made me beyond happy. as a longtime sonic fan, this movie was everything I wanted, and I'm so excited to see where they go with sonic 3.
I think the scene where Sonic is told that you don't cause damage and risk hurting people in order to be a hero had a shocking amount of depth to it. It's a very unique element in a world of superhero flicks and, uh, American war crimes. It's almost enough to make we watch the movie. I love Ben Schwartz.
About the whole "turning thoughts into reality" thing with the emerald(s), it is something that has actually happened many times before in the Sonic games themselves

This movie is a prime example of a video game adaptation done RIGHT. Everything about this film is really fun and is so faithful to the Sonic franchise. Also, really sad that Paramount can write Knuckles better than Sega themselves can lmao
I came for Sonic. Stayed for Tails, he was just adorable on every scene he was in it. I was never a Tails fan, but this movie changed my mind. We must protect that smile.
I saw this movie THREE TIMES in theaters, I never ever see a movie more than once in theaters. I loved it every single time. Great film and made me cry remembering how much sonic influenced my childhood and my interests nowadays
Knuckles was always my favorite when the first games came out and even in the earlier cartoons. So of course I hated it when they made him a complete moron in the more modern games and stuff. So I was very happy when they made him the way he use to be in the movie. Badass and a little naive because he was isolated.
4:10 according to the lore from the official sonic channel of all things, humans and anthros exist simultaneously. The humans normally live in large continents, and the animal-esk creatures live on smaller islands or archipelagos
I actually LOVED the human parts in this movie! The aunt was my favourite character in the first film and seeing more of her in this one was a blessing. She was one of the stars for me and she needs a raise LOL
Absolutely had a blast with this movie, and it's so nice that this franchise is finally getting back on its feet after so long. I know everyone hates on the wedding scene, but I'm gonna go against the grain and say I actually liked them? Sure, I would've tweaked a couple of parts that I thought didn't work, but I was laughing so hard at the sisters screwing around with the gadgets and somehow succeeding lol That's my kind of humor, but to each their own. All and all, I thought they could've used the humans to much worse effect than they did. I feel that them being a background support for Sonic and Co. is right where they need to be. And since we don't have Amy in this universe (yet), I could see them working in her place for the Adventure 2 plotline we're getting for the 3rd one. Introducing her on top of Shadow and Rouge would be too much for one film imo.
Me and my friend thought the one guard was going to go into space and not come back until the credits. I actually a laughed when that wasn't the case. XD
So Saberspark said exactly what Sega wanted to hear. That he's going to be consuming more of their media because of this movie. That's a heck of a compliment if you ask me. I honestly wasn't particularly excited for this one, the first one was underwhelming to me, but now...
As a sonic fan since I was very little, I really enjoyed this movie. It felt a lot closer to the games than the first movie. The Super Sonic scene made super nostalgic, because it reminded me a lot of the opening cinematic of Sonic Unleashed which, to this day, is one of my favorite video game cinematics ever. Also Sonic saying he "lives rent free" in Robotnik's head was gold.
The movie was fun, exciting, funny, great characters and great action, all that you want in a movie. I have no like how someone could not at least like it.
Honestly, I think the best thing about this movie is the love that went into it. People actually cared to improve the first one from the first trailer and the movie was, okay. But they made this even better. Oh so much better. Knuckles and Tails were so perfect in personality and not flanderized.
I actually like how they handled the lore of the Master Emerald. I think this may be the first time we got actual lore for the Emerald, it wasn't actually explained how the Chaos Emeralds relate to it in the games, only that a relationship exists, and that they become Super Emeralds for some reason when they interact with it. Btw, are the Chaos Emeralds scattered at the end of the movie, or are they back in the Master Emerald? It wasn't very clear on that.
The games do show plenty of lore but never really explains it. We know that it has some degree of sentience since it appeared on its own to stop a corrupted Emerl and shows holographic images to communicate. One of the biggest examples of its power is that it mutated a Chao into basically turning into a water god of destruction named Chaos as a protector of the Chao. When Chief Pachacamac led his echidna warriors to take it for their own needs, the tribal princess Tikal used it to stop the fighting between her father’s army and her friend Chaos, sealing her and Chaos within the Master Emerald.
In the games Emeralds have tons of lore, are related to a lot of gods, ancient civilizations and etc. Whe just dont know who created them. In the movies the diference is that the Master Emerald was created, but we still dont know who created the seven regular emeralds, so the movie has still not explained this question that the games also not explained.
Knuckles probably had my favourite scene in the movie when he gets close to smashing all of eggmans robots until he realises they're forming stairs. "I will destroy your toys and- oh, they're creating stairs.."
11:35 The dog is seen at the end of the movie, so no. He didn't die. 11:53 Also, Knuckles isn't an anti-hero, he's a hero. Always has been. Vegeta doesn't compare because he was a legit anti-hero (villain starting off) who at one point only cared about conquering worlds and barely got much of a redemption arc.
Here’s the thing about human characters… Yes, they’ve always been an element in sonic, but usually they’re playing smaller roles or made to be “background” characters and don’t take away from Sonic and his friends. The only humans that anyone really enjoyed was well…Eggman. And Eggman’s family like Maria. Yes, there are exceptions like Sonic X, but many would argue that show is an example of humans being annoying and taking away from the Sonic characters, eg Chris feeling like he was replacing Tails as Sonic’s closest friend and being an annoying character. So all in all, Sonic 2 made a huge leap in improvement by taking the criticisms of the first movie to heart and making the humans back off more.
@@Rivər took a second but i understood it. "In my opinion, the episode 'Lets Meet Sonic' from the show 'OK KO' did the idea of a human kid who really likes sonic better, even though it was 11 minutes instead of sonic x's seasons"
You had me worried there for a second. I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was such a vast improvement over the first Sonic movie, and even then I enjoy that movie too.
Sonic 2 was basically the same general experience as the first movie, except they made the strong points even better, and did their best to whittle down the weak points, even if only to mild success. But it was still a really fun trip to follow, and I enjoyed basically every minute of it. I'm especially happy that Knuckles retains his dignity, unlike the games, which constantly dunk on him being dumb. He's a badass, a proud warrior, but also naive and simple-minded, and goes through a predictable, but nice arc throughout the movie.
What helps is that Knuckles is never fully trusting. His alliance with Robotnik is one of convenience and most of Knuckles distrust of Sonic comes from other places in his life, so he spends as much time reevaluating Eggman as he does Sonic. You can see the gears turning as events unfold.

It sounds like the higher ups at the Sonic restaurant franchise don't want it whereas Sega has wanted it for a long time now. Freaking bummer. Maybe the money of 1 and 2 will convince them otherwise for 3?
@@tombsofak how could you not want a cross-promotion like that? To my knowledge so far it’s just been Sonic at McDonald’s. If they don’t get on it for the third movie, there’s something nefarious going on I tell you.
To the people who want to know why: both of them have similar trademarks right? But because they’re not in the same industries they aren’t over crossing into each other’s territory. Sonic the restaurant is protecting its trademark by making sure no confusion can be drawn between the two
You had me in the first few seconds LMAO. Anyway, glad you liked it overall. :D I also thought the first was... watchable, but somewhat mediocre. (Definitely only watchable because of the redesign, that's for sure.) And what you said around 3:20, about trusting your characters when you adapt them? THAT'S why this movie worked. Granted, I'm saying this as a Sonic fan - I can't exactly know what I'd think of the movies if I wasn't - but... I feel like you have to make a Sonic movie feel like SONIC. Otherwise, what's the point? And don't worry about not knowing about the lore, haha. They're doing new stuff (while still being decently respectful to the original lore concepts), so you don't have to REALLY know much. All I can say is that I hope they keep a lot of the lore from the game the next movie looks to be inspired by, because it could be one hell of an emotional ride if they do it right. ALSO. IMPORTANT. If you do decide to look into more Sonic lore via the various media, I highly, HIGHLY recommend the Japanese dub of Sonic X over the English one. The English was done by 4Kids. Enough said LOL. Sorry for the long comment! I normally just lurk here, but as you can probably tell from my Shadow icon I'm kiiind of a little bit of a Sonic fan. Haha. |D
Honestly loved the movie so much having also seen it in theatre. I didn't know how good it'd be because the first one was just okay to me and felt like a funny sidekick story. Sonic 2 definitely upped the sonic aspect of the film, which it should because its the sonic movie lol. I like that lore is shown in a way that is respectful to long time fans but easy to understand for newer ones. Tails and Knuckles are the most in character they have been in years. Id say my only few gripes would be that weird wedding scene that felt so out of nowhere and maybe a few jokes that were cringe (but still kind of funny ironically). Still, I look forward to seeing the 3rd when it comes out anyways :))
I really enjoyed it, some bits were a little cringe or unfunny but 80-90% was enjoyable. I laughed with Knuckles voice, sounded a lot like Ugandan knuckles. And Robotniks super crazy, which is amazing as he'd been on his own for a long time, and when he got the emerald, that was so so funny.
If you want to go in to the franchise, while be prepared for the 3rd movie, I recommend Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 (2 especially). Also beware of comics, although they are great to my knowlidge outside few special issues they aren't cannon.
The wedding scenes were great. Rachel walking away from the explosion was literally the best scene in the movie and I will fight anyone who says it isn’t. Like obviously the ending is great. But when it comes to single quick scenes, Rachel stole the fucking show. Loved her.
Thanks for the video! I'm old (40s), I played Sonic (1, 2, and others) and to be completely honest never really liked the games, I was always more of an FPS guy. But I liked the character. Watched some of the cartoons and thought there was potential. Then came the first movie, which was way better than I expected, I really liked Sonic. Then, I loved the second movie even more. After thinking about it, I think what clinched it for me was the people that interact with Sonic, specifically Tom and Maddie. In most movies where there are fantasy characters interacting in the real world, most if not all adults are just stereotypical distrustful morons, and plenty of times it is the children that first befriends this fantasy characters. Not this time; fist we have Tom, which is full of doubts at the start, but eventually gets to know and befriends a lonely Sonic that craves to communicate, and by the end there's a very much earned friendship between Tom and Sonic that immediately expands to his very smart, loving, and amazing wife Maddie. The end of the first movie with the three of them on Sonic's new room was the real climax. Sonic has a real family and the Wachowski's now have a son they never expected to need or love so much. On the second movie, that love expands to the point where there is growing pains, but at the same time, there are lessons learned by Sonic and his character arc is even more resonant. The addition of Tails and Knuckles help in Sonic’s development of course, and they are amazing characters I can’t wait to see grow and develop, but there’s also growth with Tom and Maddie becoming more mature parental figures, without degrading into stupid, grotesque or lame preaching adults. They love Sonic more than ever, they trust him, too but also worry about him being lonely, knowing they can’t be with him always; but at the same time, they also proved that they will never abandon him, even if that means dying with or for him. That's when I realized: It’s the human connection that made me like the movies and Sonic so much. This is what they Sonic movies have nailed better than any other similar movies before it. Yes, the wedding scene could’ve been better edited but was still good and helped emphasize that Sonic trusts Tom and Maddie with his life. For me, the ending on the battle were they all hug is the emotional high point, perhaps only second to when Sonic calls Tom, dad. I believe the connection of Sonic with Tom and Maddie is the center and heart is the Sonic movies. Maybe this doesn't work for everyone, nor for people that knew Sonic from the games, but in the movies, the trio are now essential. If they take care, develop, and mature this relationship in the sequels, Sonic’s future as an extremely successful franchise will be all but guaranteed.
The reason for all the human focus is because it's an executive-mandated way to save money on animation. Movie executives love a "sure thing," so they try ideas that have worked in the past. And "pull cartoon characters into real world and focus on humans" has worked again and again in the past, so they keep doing it. It's really that simple.
And you love calling them obviously wrong, while the only thing that gives Hollywood it's prestige is the way it creates real world economy with celebrities, set-designers and marketers. That's why animated adaptations are considered "lesser" and for the bargain bin with the video games, no matter how much money they make.
To be honest, the Adventure games did this "cartoon animals and humans living together" thing, so it's not a problem for me. I still need watch the whole movie, but I think the mobians will consequently live together with humans, which is good for me. I don't have a problem with different species in harmony.
My sister has a theory the the original design for Sonic in the first movie was fake, and that they made that design just to create fake hype. She said, "there's _no_ way they did that on purpose. There's _no_ way they could be that stupid..."
they were that stupid. there were toys made with old sonics design at the time. the amount of money needed to change promotional art and ads is not worth it to investors.
The first design we got of sonic was going to be official, this is because of the merchandise made for the movie with the first design (that’s a lot of money just for “hype”) but after all the backlash from internet or media (even making it to the news channels) they had to change it to the OG sonic movie we have.
Has your sister seen modern movies, let alone movies based on video games? They are _constantly_ that dumb, with everything. I imagine it wasn't what the people actually making the movie wanted, but some dumb executive.
The first movie walked so the second movie could run. It was overall very good! A few cringy lines at the beginning, but other than that, solid 9/10! And this review was definitely one of the better ones on YT.
So from what I get about their ages, There is even a flashback to when the echidna tribe attacked sonic, sonic was more of a toddlers age while knuckles was a bit older kid.. Knuckles mentions the attack was ten years ago. So Knuckles seems to be a teenager and Sonic is either preteen or early teens. You can also tell between the end scenes in both movies, with sonic sitting next to his adopted parents. In the first film he is about half their height when sitting (way under shoulder height), and in the second he is closer to their height when sitting (just above shoulder height). Also, the movie takes place less than a year after the last one, when they threw Eggman through the ring (Eggman comments it's been over 200 days on mushroom planet.) It's hard to tell Tail's age, he hyper focused on Sonic after the events of the last movie and mentions he is an outcast due to his love for tech and heroes like sonic. He seems to act younger than Sonic but he may just act younger. (Honestly I am thinking that maybe Amy could be brought in by her being friends with Tail's family and follows him because she may have been one of the kids to tease him but actually cares about him like a little brother and so looks for him when he went missing looking for Sonic.)
It’s a 10/10 movie for me. I loved Sonic and Tail’s friendship growing and Knuckles is my new favorite character especially because the baseball scene at the end 😂
"I don't know if she's his gf, fiancee, wife" - People call her his wife no less than three times in the movie "Their friend's wedding" - Sister. Her sister's wedding. Which was really funny and worked well with the story. "Sonic doesn't make sense as Tom's kid" - If he's 16 to you, that dialogue is even more appropriate. 16 year olds are still kids who need parents. Never mind that he's actually 13-14. "Did the dog die at the beginning" - Scene right before credits, the dog is featured again then.

I and my friends were losing it in the theatre at that tattoo pose. Lands up there with the "I was breastfed actually," "Nice."
The moment the rings appeared on screen i went "oh god they're gonna use this for that trope"
But it didn't overstay it's welcome and quickly switched to a finally plot relevant scene, so it was ok

Now I want a Drax and Knuckles movie where the whole movie is just them trying to understand each other.
It's one of, if not my favorite portrayal of Knuckles
Yeah, they did a good job at making knuckles a genuinely threatening villain. Honestly was more intimidated by him than Eggman for most of the movie.
I like how they went for the original feel of knuckles from the comics, a steeled warrior that knew nothing but tradition
The only real difference is that he didn't guard the emerald for his entire life this time, but instead just spent the same dedication looking for it
AND it ended with him as the emerald protector which is a nice twist
maybe its just me but i think they made knuckles a little bit to stupid. I know he is naive and was more than 1 time tricked by robotnik, but i never saw him as a complet idiot.

I'd be curious how they bring Tikal into it.

And i saw it with my 7 year old daughter who also loved it.
And it was Jim Carrey's last acting role
@@robloxplayer101moore5
He said he’s open to doing more Robotnik if the script is good enough. Fingers crossed.
I noticed he did the classic eggman voice from time to time, especially while he had the emerald.
The people who made this really cared and understood what they were making. I’m super excited for the next one
Its rare when a studio actually listens to what fans want to see from a character in a movie, when normally their revisions just never work.
The fact they actually got/followed the story correctly took me back abit, i was expecting sonic 2 to be more of the first but nope they actually followed the cannon story line and now I'm excited for the 3rd
For a video game adaptation, this is of unprecedented quality tbh
Hope we can see more stuff of this quality in the future
(and yes i know the castlevania series was good, but series are easier to get right than a movie)
@@Volfur2251 Me too, I'm also so excited for what 3 will offer especially Knuckles' spin-off show.
Though I hope it won't goe to off the rails like Spider-Man 3 & the Dark Knight Rises.
*stares at the Mario movie* gee I wonder who doesn’t care HMMMMM
"Why are humans in Sonic the Hedgehog" is a question asked by people who never realized Dr Eggman is a human.
Thematically speaking, it's a surprise there aren't more antagonistic humans. The first games were basically nature vs industry.
The fact we got Sonic calling Tom dad still has me crying tears of joy to this very day
Tom and Maddie Wachowski don’t need no biological child when they have adopted Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic 1 2020.
To be fair, in sonic 3 that seems like it was the case, which I think is cool.
I definitely agree
Took the words right out of my mouth Lol I 100% agree. I'm a Sonic fan too, but if the movies were just run-of-the-mill Illumination style cartoons, I wouldn't be nearly as interested tbh.
@@anthonymontes7454 Ah, I see what you did there ;)
I agree with everything you said. Honestly, I feel like the Pop Culture references really fit for Sonic as a franchise. I do agree the Alvin and the Chipmunk humor is hit or miss with me
I agree 100% it gives it a new feeling that sonic needed done right
I actually really liked the father son dynamic they were going for.
Agreed 10000000%
Dom torreto?
I didn't mind it, I just felt it weird to go from best friends in the 1st movie to suddenly he's their son.
@@IgnatiusBlaze4 I can kinda see what you mean but let's face it sonics was really child like in the first movie compared to the games and some shows where yes sonics shorter than most but was clearly a teenager. As for sabers awkwardness for Tom's dad role I think that's just him.

It's like saying this action movie has to much action and not enough with here is the thing it's a action movie and it's for entertainment laughable bad and laughable good are both almost as bad if you say something is laughable that means you can't take it seriously
The Shadow review had me laugh my ass off
Personally, I love the father-son dynamic. I was wondering where they were gonna go with Tom considering that in the lore, Tails and Sonic are best friends. But as soon as I saw the fishing scene I knew that's how they're gonna address it.
honestly, i didn't really pay attention to it
They taking Sonic as their son was just... weird in a way, so i just didn't see a reason to focus on it (didn't lead to anything meaningful either)
I mean, i guess that them being family would have been even weirder if Sonic was just a friend
To answer a couple of questions you mentioned:
1) The Owl vs.
It really sucks we got this horrible retelling of the halo lore instead of something like halo legends 2 or a band of brothers style ODST movie.
the main difference is the director of halo didn't even made the effort to read the books, watch shows or play the games of halo so that's why it sucks. when directors gonna learn not to copy avatar the last airbender disaster of a movie it was that bad because they didn't read the books or watch the show
@@jurassicarkjordanisgreat1778 I didn’t even know Halo had a live action movie I’d imagine it’s obscurity is why most don’t talk about it.
@@PeterGriffin11 Oh I am talking about the anime halo legends. But yeah foward unto dawn for a movie is pretty decent too.

The humans are there, hopefully people realize that
And now they showed Shadow, I knew they were going on that route
THIS WAS SO GOOD, EVEN BETTER THAN THE FIRST. I love their characterization of Knuckles :]
Edit: I believe Sonic is meant to be fifteen or younger in the movie! In my eyes he's still definitely a kid in the movie universe
Same! I loved the characterisation of him
I took my nephew to see it, Knuckles stole the show lol
They did Knuckles so perfectly
I think somebody who worked on the movie said that Movie Sonic was 13, so that would make him younger than Game Sonic who's 15 iirc.
He actually 14 or 13 in this continuity.
Fun fact: the director of the movies was also the cgi director of the cutscenes of the shadow the hedgehog game
So you KNOW that the movies legit are made by the people who understand and have worked on the games
I mean, that game was... questionable
But it's close enough
The only thing they missed was the drowning song. That song used to give me so much anxiety as a kid and I wish they had it in the movie.
It's actually in the movie in the composition by Junkie XL "You don't have to be alone anymore" at 1min
Yeah it was hidden in the soundtrack somewhere just as Sonic was Drowning in the movie
It is in the movie, the part where sonic almost drowns
Dude same! But I guess it was just too subtle? Sad when that happens to an artist... it happens to the best of us.
It’s not even just the huge set pieces like the snowboarding segment - it’s also small details like The Mean Bean, the water slide in the temple, and one of the helicopters being the same as the one in the opening of Sonic Adventure 2’s hero storyline.
the scene where they floated by holding hands in the club, the air bubble
Well, the old trilogy games did feature some bird statues and carvings inside of ruins and labyrinths. So, they may have been inspired by those background details and decided to expand on them.
@@satriosukarji1777 It's actually just straight up Labyrinth Zone you can tell by the Crystals and Statues and the previously mentioned water slide
@@seraphiim444 Not to mention the sprite artwork for Super Sonic in the credits sequence!
That same copter has SA-2 on the side too
Personally, I liked both the wedding sequence and the father-son relationship between tom and sonic.
I was getting worried with how long the wedding scene lasted, tough they would waste an unnecessary amount of time on it, but no
It was short and actually had something to do with the plot
Too me it felt way too long and it was filler
I’m glad Knuckles is finally getting his redemption as a tough, clever, respected Echidna. Instead of a dumb, lame, and embarrassing Knuckles from other media
Yeah, Boomkles was the stereotype shredded body but no brain.
I liked that he was less *dumb* and more *oblivious* due to his isolation. he just doesn't understand things because he grew up completely and utterly alone.
I like how they made him a credible threat, found common ground between him and Sonic and how he has that Draxx like inability to grasp idioms.
But you gotta admit despite how stupid he was, he was hilarious in the Sonic Boom series. 😆
@@missdaniels3118 Meme! Approved!
It’s probably for the best that they refrain from giving the characters any specific ages. That only seems to generate problems.
That means that he is 4 years old I in first scene
Sonic was confirmed to be 14 in the first movie and 15 in the second

*Minor spoiler warning*
Did anyone notice the "Drowning Danger" theme motif when sonic was losing consciousness before knuckles saved him? I SQUEALED at that detail! All the homages and such are so well done.
Honestly, I thought it was just in my head, as I was imagining that exact tune as I watched that.
I hate how there was no avalanche caused by the fight and snowboard scene
I really loved the fact that Knuckles joins Sonic and Tails in the end to protect the Master Emerald, rather than him going back with it to protect it by himself.
In the games. It's Knuckles duty to protect the master emerald from any evil threats so he lives all by his own in angel island
The movie was more on a different take with the character
Yeah, the first one feels like a very "test the waters" kinda film where, as much as i enjoyed it, was kinda generic.
The post credit scene gave me chills. I knew what would be revealed the moment a certain line was said.
The fan-service in the movie was terrific.
I'm so hyped for the third movie
In the movies at least here. They kind of changed Sonic's age range. He's portrayed as being around 13 years old rather than his normal 15 years in the games. Knuckles in game was given 16-17 and tails 8 years old. Not sure of tails and knuckles in this movie but I'm figuring tails is maybe 6-8 and knuckles may be 15. This movie was a blast and I'm glad you covered and enjoyed watching it!
Its hard to really tell honestly
I mean the classic games I'd say maybe he's around 10 which would make sense here in the 1st couple movies, whereas in modern games thanks to the Heroes manual he's 15, Tails 8, and Knuckles 16. So maybe there will be a bit of a time skip... that or maybe the irl time and in movie time is mirroring, it's been what 2 years since the 1st movie? So 2025 Sonic would be 15, right in time for the more modern Sonic age.
Knuckle's seems a bit older,
@@blazicgd
Yeah but that's his age in the games, Sonic Heroes manual, Sonic 15, Tails 8, and Knuckles 16.
The limitation of characters just standing there is a thing in the games. Everybody usually becomes Sonic's cheerleader when he goes super.
I actually like the humans, the only scene I didn't like is when Rachel chased after her fiance. That could've been cut.
Funny you should say that since this is pretty much Paramount's biggest succesful franchise since Transformers. At least of what didn't get gobbled up by other studios... (looking at you Disney buying the MCU rights)
The wedding scene was actually secretly the best part. Which was Shocking.
Sonic is usually 14,
And Ben tends to voice younger characters like Randy Cunningham and Dewey Duck so, he’s definitely meant to be an actual kid, only just a teen really.
Randy's a 9th grade Ninja- so around 14 or 15, like Sonic.

I love the fact that they used the original tails voice from the games for the movie, it just makes so much sense!

It just takes proper care to do the source material justice
To be a little nerdy for just a moment: they changed the lore slightly.

The human portion was way better this time around. I was laughing so much.
Sonic is 16 in the games but 12-14 in the movie
No he’s still 15-16 in the movies, as it says 15 years later after we see baby sonic in the first film
He's 15 forever in the game's
this movie made me happier than a movie's made me in a very long time. as somebody's who quite versed in sonic lore from different genres, it's so refreshing to see sonic be just...

They clearly scattered at the end, when Knuckles fixes the Master Emerald the Chaos Emeralds aren't there
The games do show plenty of lore but never really explains it.
The necessary lore is in the games and comic books
@@WillianyAmill They are completely different continuities but yes I think the lore in the comic version is really wild.
Here’s the thing about human characters…
Yes, they’ve always been an element in sonic, but usually they’re playing smaller roles or made to be “background” characters and don’t take away from Sonic and his friends.

Yeah I heard the sonic restaurant wants nothing to do with sonic the hedgehog

The wedding scenes were great. Rachel walking away from the explosion was literally the best scene in the movie and I will fight anyone who says it isn’t. Like obviously the ending is great. But when it comes to single quick scenes, Rachel stole the fucking show. Loved her.
rachel slayed
I was shocked how much I loved the human scenes. But my favorite of the scenes is absolutely the Priest.
I wanna play as Rachel in the next Sonic game.
Detective Pikachu is the only one that did it right
To be honest, the Adventure games did this "cartoon animals and humans living together" thing, so it's not a problem for me. I still need watch the whole movie, but I think the mobians will consequently live together with humans, which is good for me. I don't have a problem with different species in harmony.

they were that stupid. there were toys made with old sonics design at the time. the amount of money needed to change promotional art and ads is not worth it to investors.
The owner of my local theater thinks the same.
With how trash video game movies have been for the past 30 years, I wouldn't doubt for a second that they were that stupid

So from what I get about their ages,
There is even a flashback to when the echidna tribe attacked sonic, sonic was more of a toddlers age while knuckles was a bit older kid..
Also, the movie takes place less than a year after the last one, when they threw Eggman through the ring (Eggman comments it's been over 200 days on mushroom planet.)
It's hard to tell Tail's age, he hyper focused on Sonic after the events of the last movie and mentions he is an outcast due to his love for tech and heroes like sonic.
"I don't know if she's his gf, fiancee, wife"
- People call her his wife no less than three times in the movie
"Their friend's wedding"

"Sonic doesn't make sense as Tom's kid"
- If he's 16 to you, that dialogue is even more appropriate. 16 year olds are still kids who need parents. Never mind that he's actually 13-14.
"Did the dog die at the beginning"
- Scene right before credits, the dog is featured again then.
