Blacksmithing: making an axe head

- I forge an axe head from leaf spring. I show forging, grinding and heat treating. I don't show the handle making. Open the full video description for more information.
The starting piece is about 2cm thick and I am just upsetting it to more thickness before punching the eye.

He is an enthusiastic man. I probably could do it too. Never forged anything in my life. You can do it to. It's not rocket science. However the result Will not be as god as his ;)
I'm sure I watched this video when it was first uploaded. Since that time I've built a blacksmith shop for myself with a charcoal forge and hand crank blower. I'm reviewing it today looking for insight to forge my own axe. You are a true craftsman and inspiration Bertram. I hope you are well and continuing to create useful works of art.

I find it amazing that you used no power tools to craft such an beautiful tool. Nowadays all the smiths I know, including me, feel we need the newest grinders, power hammers, and other tools. We sometimes forget that it is not the tools that make the smith😃😃😃Finely crafted Sir. You have great skill.👍👍👍
I'm a beginning blacksmith and hate most powertools mostly because of the price price tag but also because I feel like it takes away the feel of blacksmithing
@@timidb exactly. Power tools are meant for a business level production. So if you are doing something yourself. Such tools would both satisfy you and reminds you that every step you do requires muscles force so that it trains you and it also cheap and anyone can start traditional blacksmithing
I remember when I started out my creativity was at its highest and as I got more power tools and started thinking more about money my creativity and vitality dropped. I'm realizing now why I do this and it isn't for the money. With a good vice, some files and a treadle hammer I can make anything I want

This axe is realy beautiful and it gets even more beautiful by the fact that you build it with your own hand and your own body power🙌🏼
Your video is full of things I like. One of those at the top is you only quenched the cutting edge. The edge is hardened while the head remains soft to absorb shock. Beautifully done.

My father, a master carpenter, had a large grindstone with an up-and-down wooden slat pedal at the side that you stood on, with one foot, to pump up and down . The stone was pretty big; as tall as me when I was little.
Donna C - My old grinder is very much the same and has been in the family for maybe 150 years . You can stand to work the peddle or sit down . The stone is Arkansas novaculite and I made the newer grinding stone 40 years ago . ATB to you Donna .

The stone was my grandfather's, a German who immigrated to Minnesota.

what a understated, yet mighty film. you have made, in my opinion, one of the most important things. i loved watching the cold chisel drive thru that steel billet to form the eye, it was the moment of transformation, akin to alchemy, or forming a coal with a bow drill to start fire, or the coallesence of iron in a bloom furnace.

Beautiful axe! I really like your grinder aswell. The results were really good and in my opinion it´s always good to use less powertools.
I agree. When at work, I have to use an electric grinder, I hate it. You always lose metal to the damn thing. Too much aggression, too much noice, no finesse.

completely understandable. i seldom laugh out loud or make other noises to show my emotion but that gorgeous shining edge made me say 'oooohhhhhh' out loud!
It is an absolute power of human brain, not machines power that edge is shiny and super perfect. You fount the roots , I do agree with you: if an edge must be sharp and polish: a nice working brain finds the way to do it without electricity. Cheers

great video ! watched your 6 day camp vid and subscribed I've been blacksmithing since the 80s learned from my dad and a lot of his old blacksmith club friends little tip if you can make it happen find a bigger anvil doesn't need to be massive but the hammer to anvil ratio needs to be right at least 75-1 or you will get fatigue but if thats all you got then thats what you work with! just trying to help... again love your videos and your style very classic

I agree with all the other comments that your work is beautiful, amazing to watch, and you must be a master blacksmith. Unlike many of the other persons who commented, I have no background knowledge about blacksmithing, grinding, or forging. What type of training did you have to go through to become such a skilled tradesman? If I wanted to buy a fine handcrafted axe such as you made, where would I go? Who makes and sells them?
Its such a ugly scrap of metal, that at the same time is so beautifully made. The edge is so damned good! Polished! And the edges are all rough, uneven, theres pits in the metal, the corners are odd, I love all of it. Its beauty comes from the ugly state its in. I wouldn't want it any other way. Plus, something you make yourself, its way better than buying something that someone else made. Kudos. Subbed for the Bushcraft, now Im stuck here for the blacksmith work.
