  • In the fifth video of the how-to build a boat series the frames are epoxied to the hull with epoxy fillets. This step brings all the individual plywood pieces into one large piece and a boat is born.

This 12' solo skiff takes approximately 50 hours to build and requires basic carpentry tools. It is perfect for a first time builder. It can be paddled or powered with a trolling motor or 6hp max. The 6hp cruises at 15 mph.

How do you make the thickened epoxy mix, or is it sold as a separate epoxy product?

Did you use finishing resin or laminating resin?

I want to build a 12' inshore skiff as more or less a learning project to kill time during lockdown that will hopefully lead to a larger boat that can be used offshore. I can't afford to do the fiberglass with epoxy especially as I have zero experience and frankly can't afford to waste the money if I flubb it up, which based on my history with woodworking projects is a definite possibility. My question is can I join the plywood to the structural members using epoxy with aerosil and then do the fiberglass layup with polyester resin with gelcoat finish? And if so what is the downside? Keeping in mind I'm 60 years old so boat longevity (20 years+) isn't a major issue.

Polyester and Vinyl ester resins do not make a structural bond to plywood because they are not adhesives but liquid plastics. They work just fine for molded boats but not with plywood. Epoxy resin is an adhesive and it is the only resin you should use. Gelcoat is a mold release and resin alone has no notable structural qualities, is the combination of resin and fiberglass that is structural. The use of fiberglass is required for the boat to be the proper strength. This boat is designed specifically for first time builders and can be build for $1000 or less. There are epoxy resins available that are lower cost than the "big names", check out www.uscomposites.com
