I emailed with the President of Bear & Son. He explained to me the story behind the "Carbon 4th Generation" name on the shield. It refers to the owner's grandfather, father, himself, and his son who all value the benefits of carbon steel. I have the same barlow as you with the wood scales. I think I lucked out a bit with better fit and finish. The blade has no wobble in any position and the back spring is flush when open and closed. Centered blade too. Two gorgeous knives you showed there! For me, it matters to support USA workers, especially at a small company of 35 employees. I understand that country of origin does not matter to everyone!

Have to admit I am a Rosecraft fan . The different designs and quality from my experience have been outstanding for the price range.

I’ve yet to have the slightest complaint about any of my Rosecraft purchases. I am a fan of Case and Bear and Sons but have had to return knives of both manufacturers for quality issues including a $100 Bear and Son this week. It’s my first return to them so I hope they’re good because I do like their knives. My return experiences with Case have been top notch. They stand behind their knives.

Both knives are well built and beautiful. I feel the same way, as long as a knife is well built and looks good I don't care where it is made. Thanks for sharing and God bless.

Most of my collection is locking knives. I purchase most of them from a local knife shop so that I can put my hands on them and do a quality check. The few that I buy online, I've had a 50/50 success rate on fit and finish. Good luck with all your purchases. Good video, Paddy. Thanks

Enjoyed the comparison. To be perfectly honest.. I own TWO of the Bear & Son Barlows, and my blades have NONE of the issues that you stated. But your millage may vary on a case by case basis

I've always put B&S a small step below Case even with Cases QC issues. I've had a large stockman and still have one of Bear and Sons small stockmans and the QC isn't there. There's major gaps and I've fixed it a bit but it still leaves alot to be desired. It does seem with these barlows, their QC is getting much better which is a positive. Great video and comparison.

I have the same wobble on my Barlow when closed. It took 20 minutes to sharpen it too but honestly I bought it because I was curious about it and really liked the design. Rosecraft are better...followed closely by rough rider reserve.

@ paddy’s potato peelers You mentioned Case. For me me all the have is my type of character. Visually and ergonomically. But I wonder what they test twice. As an online customer all I, hopefully, have is luck.

Good video. In my opinion all of the issues with the Bear & Sons knife are things the quality control department should have found and corrected. I have several Rosecraft knives and I am thrilled with all of them. GEC knives cost about $100 more than these knives and they have their own issues, i.e., proud tips, blade wrap, gaps, etc.

Both great knives. I did not like the bone stag much either. Even the yellow looks better.

better watch Jon Gadget's new video on his trip to Victorinox and the new stuff coming like higher end blade steel and an Alox bladeless model coming next year. BTW SAK's always come super sharp whatever size they are

They last three rosecrafts I've bought had shrinking covers. I'm very disappointed in them.
Also they soak up oil and chamge color. Even in one of my Jack Wolf slips.

Don’t oil the nolichucky in mineral oil, the scales go from beautiful moss green to BLACK ! Obviously it will not affect the purpose and and ability of the blade, which is terrific, but I liked the original color of the scales much more.

I love Rosecraft - cheap, sharp and well made as you say, I just feel like they're missing a bit of character which the more traditional brands have. I'd like to get a Sheffield barlow next as I feel they have character, but I don't expect the same factory precision. Would you recommend Arthur Wright, Michael May...? Have a good weekend.

Rosecraft: Less expensive than Case, but better blade steel and fit n finish.🧐👍

  • @framusburns-hagstromiii808

Gotta say Rosecraft is doing a better job all around than GEC, Case or Bear and Son. Bear and Son fit and finish is always less than perfect and frequently borders on shameful. Case does better than Bear and son but have fit and finish issues from time to time as well. I try to buy American but it's really frustrating to see what Rosecraft is able to do for a very competitive price point..That blade motion on the Bear and Son is because the blade is narrower than the back spring and they have only put in a single brass washer on one side of the pivot. Only the modern Barlow in this model line has dual washers and doesn't have that issue.

Bear and son have solved the problem, mines perfect.
