Good morning garden family ❤ about a month ago I started my sobriety journey and commented under a video that included some garden cocktails. I wanted to follow up because of all the love I received from that comment that gave me strength and motivation to push through hard times. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I am 1 month strong and my seedlings are so well taken care of ❤🎉and thank you Laura & Aaron for showing me how much can get done in a day when I’m up and able ❤

I totally agree! Kids are a joyful part of life and should be involved in learning, whether that’s gardening, cooking, or occasionally being on RUclips. It’s a big difference between having a channel which focuses on the child making money as a star and a child being shown as part of regular family life. I love seeing the kids involved from time to time, especially because my kids are just a little younger and I can see what activities will be age appropriate for them soon, but it’s certainly not my reason for viewing the channel 😂
As beautiful as the Hartley is and it is no need to cover it up, the chicken coop brings it down just a notch which kinda keeps the Hartley from being so formal, a down home country feel which I think is who this family is 😊. The Hartley is a a stand alone entity and nothing will ever change that ❤.
Now a question. Why do people say anything about landscape fabric? And yes DeWitt Pro is the way to go for sure, but if you don't want to use Treflan (not organic, but a chemical weed pre-emergent) then fabric like where you have used it is a must. So unless fabric haters are willing to come and pull all the weeds then fabric here and there is a must😊.
I’m going to agree with Aaron on making the chicken coop/Hartley area 2 separate rooms. I can’t remember if it was a video when you were working in the Hartley or a pic you posted but it was clear that these 2 areas were not jiving with each other. Both beautiful, but definitely 2 different styles.. hope that helps Aaron!
Put the pallet walkway by the barn or pond or that new red barn somewhere. Rip out the wisteria and have a pretty view that isn't blocked. They could even make a trellis by the red barn for the wisteria if they want to keep it.
It was sad to watch the pallet walkway come up mostly due to the fact that was a project that most novice gardeners could easily and affordably do. Not mention it was about one of the last honest DIY garden projects that Laura had done before switching to the big production. I recall finding Laura when I was building a raised garden bed and she was building a garden box on her deck. That dates back a lot of years, and have watched every episode since, loyal viewer. Just miss more of the simpler DIYs that were done before, that were affordable and easy for a procrastinating, partially lazy, really frugal, garden hobbyist could do!

I LOVE this family! The entire family and watching Laura carry those babies and have those babies and be blessed to witness a tiny peak inside has been.. has changed my life honestly. Well said on the question about your kids! I have always protected my daughter from being posted on the internet because of informed consent. That being said I understand that you guys make your living making videos, and I have always respected the way you include your children. It never seems forced or contrived and it’s obvious that you’re making content that they happen to be in and not using them to make content.
Some people that are really into social media get the feeling they know Laura and her family personally and cross the line asking too many questions that isn’t their business. These are the ones that need a real life.
Aaron , I agree 1000% ! We are farmers & ours kids understood there is/was a certain amount of work that needed to be done. Our kids never asked for or expected an allowance . Now that they are adults, they’re grateful for growing up on a farm. Any time they applied for a job, the fact that they grew up on a farm, was always the key factor on why they were hired! Hey Aaron! Cat owners don’t bring their cat to the vet after it is dead from eating toxic plants. They bury them. I have never heard an UTube vlog person ever warn their viewers about toxic plants. Not sure if it is from lack of knowledge about plants themselves or what. Hellebores, lilies are deadly, also. You should do an vlog on deadly or toxic plants for cats, dogs and humans. It is a disservice to the viewer. Viewers need to learn not just be entertained. You have had in the last several weeks people bring up toxic plants. You just laugh it off. Why is that?
My son had chores he was required to do. We paid for grades. School was considered his job. He is now 23 and talks about how thankful he was for that lesson. He lives on his own, chores are a must.
About the kids appearing in videos question: As someone who feels super passionate about this, I see a distinct difference between people who are monetizing their kids and their channels can't exist without them vs. you are creating content about something and your kids happen to appear sometimes (AND you give them agency to say no).
Love the pallet walkway, BUT it is now in the wrong spot. Sorry Laura, I have to agree with Aaron on this one! It is time to build a green screen to close off the coup from the Hartley. Move the wisteria arch & pallet walkway somewhere else... perhaps a pathway behind the barn to the basketball court?
I agree the chicken coop is too informal next to the Hartly and they seem a bit odd next to each other. I thought you would eventually need to move the coop but blocking it off would work too.

I love the open and honest way you approach everything. I sometimes feel some of us need to apologize for the liberties others take in the comments. Whether it’s your hair, Laura, or your shoes, or the way you parent your children. You both are an inspiration to us all and while we watch the videos for education, we see the love and support you all have for each other. As much as I love the arch, basket boy, and pallet walkway, I agree with Aaron that that the chicken coop and Hartley are two different tyes of areas and need the evergreen buffer I bet you can easily find a better, permanent spot to move the wisteria (ugh!), arch, pallet walkway, and the basket boy where they will be more appropriate. It could be a secret area out towards the red barn or in the dirt lands.
I think you handle the kids on camera very gracefully - it's clear to me they come and go as they please, and they just want to hang out with Mom ❤ I'm with Laura on the path and wisteria - wait to get the boxwood hedge completed and see how the wisteria performs. No need to rush! It is so lovely to watch your garden waking up, thank you for sharing it with us 😊

My husband got me a livestock marker which is used for marking on livestock ear tags and it works great! It doesnt fade nearly as fast as other markers! You can get them at farm stores. 😊
The pallet walkway is the project that brought me to Garden Answer. Laura, the enthusiasm and ability that you installed that walkway with always brings me back to see what else you have brewing. They have such a great relationship. Laura's positivity is what makes her so likeable, but Aaron is so dead on when he occasionally nudges her toward reality when she gushes over a plant that I think most folks would agree is unattractive.
Aaron is correct about the chicken coop, the pallet walkway, and the wisteria. You can't be too sentimental in a garden. If a wisteria is that important, then plant a new one. It's not like you're both 80 and won't see it come to its fruition.
The wisteria needs to be moved before it is a major problem IMO. Maybe in their area it will be manageable but most places it becomes a monster that you can never get rid of.

I agree with Aaron. I'm in the UK 🇬🇧 we tend to have garden rooms with each having its own private space. My favourite garden is the Kings garden at Highgrove. That's where I take my inspiration.

Straight rows seem to detract from the idea of a "rose garden" to me. Vegetables and cut flowers make sense for 60 ft rows, but roses deserve a little more "staging" for my taste.

I enjoy seeing your children in the videos and it certainly is a learning experience for them. They are so adorable. I have watched them grow and love watching them. Put people in their place, Aaron! This made me laugh so much. When you two were talking about how there's no room to walk between the roses in your new Rose Garden...does anyone else remember Laura mentioning how little room there was to walk between the roses when they first moved into the house, with the roses planted on the walkway to and from the car. 😂 Love you both SO much 💕
Roses, what if you just take out rows 3 and 6. You can walk on the outer sides of rows 1 and 2, 4 and 5, and 7 and 8. You can just cut back and trim from one side if each row. No moving every plant, mulch, etc. Then remove plants you aren't fond of and replace with some of the ones from rows 3 and 6. Hope this makes sense.

Great parents and wonderful kids! Family work together in the garden is a vacation! My children move out many years ago, sometimes , they sent my grandchildren home, it's so fun watching them to play in the garden.
Daily maintenance chores inside and out were expected as we were not paid allowances to be contributing family members. There was always a list of jobs to be done with monetary values attached so we kids could choose to work or be broke. If none of us wanted to take on a responsibility listed, then somehow, an eagerly anticipated activity did not happen because parents were busy doing all the jobs remaining on the list. As an adult looking back, I thought the distinction between chores and jobs was wise ❤
Good morning, all! So fascinating to hear how each family teaches kids where money comes from. My family was big on "chores are simply apart of living in the house, but school is your job, so that's where you get paid." So my dad would give us $10 for each A, $5 for each B, and a bonus for straight-A's. It was a super effective system! All my siblings and I worked hard at school and enjoyed spending on our hobbies. Then we all got multiple scholarships going into college. I think my parents saved money altogether. 😆 🥰

There are several different ways to grow and train a wisteria than just an arbor. Think outside the box. But....I think that the little basket boy, raised up just a bit, and the wisteria cascading around him from the arbor will be absolutely beautiful. With a stone pathway.

I’m with Aaron on the wisteria. Take it down. You can always start some new plants from it. Just lay them across some soil and they will send out roots. I like the idea of a stone pathway there too. Also as far as solar, you don’t need to put it on a roof. My son has some acreage and he’s installing them in a field. There are some out there that move with the sun also. Yes, usually, but nowadays, I can't find anything with a search on the internet... It's al trying to sell me things, and any site I click on has a ton of popups about cookies, and then asks me for my email, then pops up and tells me about a special code, then a chat box pops up and urges me to speak to an bot.... 😂😂😂😂 I'm 30, so I could see how that would drive a fifty year old crazy, when five years ago I could find awesome projects and tips on Google, it's all gone down the drain.
Yes and no. There are cultural differences, and language interpretation, that comes into play, as well. The lady asking the question was from another country. Googling it in her country wouldn't give the same answer as what an American would say, or an American website would answer. Sometimes getting things directly from the horse's mouth is the best solution.
The garden around the chicken coop is one of my favorite things about their garden!💕 The relaxed, homey feel is charming and soft on the eye and a nice relief from the formality of the sharp angles of the sidewalks and boxwoods around the Hartley.

Love that you said you like to listen to the sounds outside. I can understand that barking dogs are annoying. I can listen to large dogs barking as they have deeper barks and i'm used to train noises as i grew up near a train track. Otherwise i really appreciate the nature sounds which many city friends described as louder and more annoying than city traffic 😳
My annoyance with barking dogs is different. It's the same compulsion I get with a crying baby. " Must help!!" Not my child or pet, thus the frustration.

That would deter them from learning what you guys do. And they would grow to hate it. I agree with you 100%. Also, I love the banter between you two. Regarding "Ducks," no, you do not want them. We had ducks, geese, and chickens one time. They ruined everything. Chickens dug up flowers, the geese and the ducks pooped everywhere, the grass, the patio, the sidewalk, the flower gardens. You name it. There was grossness everywhere. However, we do have barn cats and they like to use the flower beds as their personal bathroom. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening.

I recall finding Laura when I was building a raised garden bed and she was building a garden box on her deck. That dates back a lot of years, and have watched every episode since, loyal viewer. Just miss more of the simpler DIYs that were done before, that were affordable and easy for a procrastinating, partially lazy, really frugal, garden hobbyist could do!

Well said on the question about your kids! I have always protected my daughter from being posted on the internet because of informed consent. That being said I understand that you guys make your living making videos, and I have always respected the way you include your children. It never seems forced or contrived and it’s obvious that you’re making content that they happen to be in and not using them to make content.
Some people that are really into social media get the feeling they know Laura and her family personally and cross the line asking too many questions that isn’t their business. These are the ones that need a real life.

Aaron , I agree 1000% ! We are farmers & ours kids understood there is/was a certain amount of work that needed to be done. Our kids never asked for or expected an allowance . Now that they are adults, they’re grateful for growing up on a farm. Any time they applied for a job, the fact that they grew up on a farm, was always the key factor on why they were hired! Hey Aaron! Cat owners don’t bring their cat to the vet after it is dead from eating toxic plants. They bury them. I have never heard an UTube vlog person ever warn their viewers about toxic plants. Not sure if it is from lack of knowledge about plants themselves or what. Hellebores, lilies are deadly, also. You should do an vlog on deadly or toxic plants for cats, dogs and humans. It is a disservice to the viewer. Viewers need to learn not just be entertained. You have had in the last several weeks people bring up toxic plants. You just laugh it off. Why is that?
My son had chores he was required to do. We paid for grades. School was considered his job. He is now 23 and talks about how thankful he was for that lesson. He lives on his own, chores are a must.
About the kids appearing in videos question: As someone who feels super passionate about this, I see a distinct difference between people who are monetizing their kids and their channels can't exist without them vs. you are creating content about something and your kids happen to appear sometimes (AND you give them agency to say no).
I agree with Aaron. Remove the wisteria and pallet walkway and hide the chicken run from the Hartley. Keep them in separate zones.

Move the wisteria arch & pallet walkway somewhere else... perhaps a pathway behind the barn to the basketball court?

As much as I love the arch, basket boy, and pallet walkway, I agree with Aaron that that the chicken coop and Hartley are two different tyes of areas and need the evergreen buffer I bet you can easily find a better, permanent spot to move the wisteria (ugh!), arch, pallet walkway, and the basket boy where they will be more appropriate. It could be a secret area out towards the red barn or in the dirt lands.

My husband got me a livestock marker which is used for marking on livestock ear tags and it works great! It doesnt fade nearly as fast as other markers! You can get them at farm stores. 😊

I absolutely love seeing you two argue/banter. A great example of disagreeing but also listening and hearing a different opinion with an open mind.
They have such a great relationship. Laura's positivity is what makes her so likeable, but Aaron is so dead on when he occasionally nudges her toward reality when she gushes over a plant that I think most folks would agree is unattractive.
Aaron is correct about the chicken coop, the pallet walkway, and the wisteria. You can't be too sentimental in a garden. If a wisteria is that important, then plant a new one. It's not like you're both 80 and won't see it come to its fruition.
The wisteria needs to be moved before it is a major problem IMO. Maybe in their area it will be manageable but most places it becomes a monster that you can never get rid of.

Straight rows seem to detract from the idea of a "rose garden" to me. Vegetables and cut flowers make sense for 60 ft rows, but roses deserve a little more "staging" for my taste.

I enjoy seeing your children in the videos and it certainly is a learning experience for them. They are so adorable. I have watched them grow and love watching them. Put people in their place, Aaron! When you two were talking about how there's no room to walk between the roses in your new Rose Garden...does anyone else remember Laura mentioning how little room there was to walk between the roses when they first moved into the house, with the roses planted on the walkway to and from the car. 😂 Love you both SO much 💕
Roses, what if you just take out rows 3 and 6. You can walk on the outer sides of rows 1 and 2, 4 and 5, and 7 and 8. You can just cut back and trim from one side if each row. No moving every plant, mulch, etc. Then remove plants you aren't fond of and replace with some of the ones from rows 3 and 6. Hope this makes sense.

Great parents and wonderful kids! Family work together in the garden is a vacation! My children move out many years ago, sometimes , they sent my grandchildren home, it's so fun watching them to play in the garden.
Daily maintenance chores inside and out were expected as we were not paid allowances to be contributing family members. There was always a list of jobs to be done with monetary values attached so we kids could choose to work or be broke. If none of us wanted to take on a responsibility listed, then somehow, an eagerly anticipated activity did not happen because parents were busy doing all the jobs remaining on the list. As an adult looking back, I thought the distinction between chores and jobs was wise ❤
Good morning, all! So fascinating to hear how each family teaches kids where money comes from. My family was big on "chores are simply apart of living in the house, but school is your job, so that's where you get paid." So my dad would give us $10 for each A, $5 for each B, and a bonus for straight-A's. It was a super effective system! All my siblings and I worked hard at school and enjoyed spending on our hobbies. Then we all got multiple scholarships going into college. I think my parents saved money altogether. 😆 🥰

There are several different ways to grow and train a wisteria than just an arbor. Think outside the box. But....I think that the little basket boy, raised up just a bit, and the wisteria cascading around him from the arbor will be absolutely beautiful. With a stone pathway.

Paw Paw Everlast Label Company is what I use for metal garden markers. They have different sizes and shapes and have lasted for years for me.

I’m with Aaron on the wisteria. Take it down. You can always start some new plants from it. Just lay them across some soil and they will send out roots. I like the idea of a stone pathway there too.
Also as far as solar, you don’t need to put it on a roof. My son has some acreage and he’s installing them in a field. There are some out there that move with the sun also.

Yes, usually, but nowadays, I can't find anything with a search on the internet... It's al trying to sell me things, and any site I click on has a ton of popups about cookies, and then asks me for my email, then pops up and tells me about a special code, then a chat box pops up and urges me to speak to an bot....

Yes and no. There are cultural differences, and language interpretation, that comes into play, as well. The lady asking the question was from another country. Googling it in her country wouldn't give the same answer as what an American would say, or an American website would answer. Sometimes getting things directly from the horse's mouth is the best solution.

The garden around the chicken coop is one of my favorite things about their garden!💕 The relaxed, homey feel is charming and soft on the eye and a nice relief from the formality of the sharp angles of the sidewalks and boxwoods around the Hartley.

Love that you said you like to listen to the sounds outside. I can understand that barking dogs are annoying. I can listen to large dogs barking as they have deeper barks and i'm used to train noises as i grew up near a train track. Otherwise i really appreciate the nature sounds which many city friends described as louder and more annoying than city traffic 😳
My annoyance with barking dogs is different. It's the same compulsion I get with a crying baby. " Must help!!"

Regarding "Ducks," no, you do not want them. We had ducks, geese, and chickens one time. They ruined everything. Chickens dug up flowers, the geese and the ducks pooped everywhere, the grass, the patio, the sidewalk, the flower gardens. You name it. There was grossness everywhere.
However, we do have barn cats and they like to use the flower beds as their personal bathroom. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening.
Would it work for you to make them a dedicated outdoor sand cat box?
