I think why fans are more scared of bad reviews is because they don’t want a repeat of last decade. Not that it was the worst in game quality, it’s mainly because Sega played it safe when it came to ideas, and when Colors and Gens got great reviews, Sega seemed to just copy and paste the ideas for the course of the latter half of 2022 with no substantial being add on to the games.

There's still traces of that even here in Frontiers, what with them reusing Generations assets and sometimes even the level design for the cyberspace areas (I played Generations a fckton back then so I still memorized some of the courses lol)
They're on the right track, but I wish Sega would leave behind that "Play it safe" mentality, it's not healthy for both the franchise and them as a company.
And maybe this is just me reading so deeply between the lines, but from what I can infer in some dialogues and side remarks within the game, I think they're trying their best to move forward from that mentality too.
They have a good foundation here. I don't just want them to stick with it - I want them to BUILD upon it. Right now the series' future is uncertain but hopeful. In my eyes, at least.

I think people are just concerned since this is probably considered by the fans as the "right path" for the series. The lower reviews, especially two Sonic games being included in the worst game of all time lists, actually caused Sega to change stuff and play it safe for the past decade. Not to mention, the director of Frontiers mentioned that they actually pushed for the 5 year dev time while the higher-ups are breathing down their necks. So Frontiers getting a lower and lower score would make the higher-ups be like "this is the reason why the longer development time was never worth it" and it's back to rushed games that play safe again.

But Nooooo, the game is getting review bomb, and rather than just take accountability and re-edit the video, he instead does a 4D Chess Conspiracy Theory rhetoric that “it’s the Sonic Fans review bombing the game they like, disguising themselves as my fans in order to make me look bad!”

What's really sad to me is that after the success of sonic colors and generation it essentially kinda forced sega to play it REALLLY safe with sonic and not push new ideas forward that could potentially spice the series since alot critics tend to critize anything that's "not sonic"/"not speedy" and while yes sonic entire identity is basically his speed but I genuinely feel like this seriously limits of what he can experiment with its not so if the idea should always be focused around speed but more so how well executed that idea is (at least in opinion anyway) a good example of well executed idea was with the adventure games and especially unleashed sure adventure 1 kinda stumbled a bit with some playstyles (mostly Amy and especially big's playstyle) but nonetheless it did a decent enough job of having multiple characters with their own style of game play and the same thing can be said about unleashed sure the werehog has no business being in a sonic game but honestly (in my opinion) it did a very a good job of having a beat em up style of game play without disrupting the flow of the game too much sure the stages in that game go on for far too long but I personally don't think that's a bad thing it helps balance out the rather short day stages and thus it mask the game's otherwise short length if it was just the day stages but now different playable characters in a sonic games now just mostly sonic again but slightly different (like say classic sonic in generations or the custom avatar in forces) yes generally their fine enough in the their own right but it kinda killed off any semblance of variety since they don't exactly change up the game in any significant way to freshen things up which is why frontiers is honestly a massive step in the right direction for sonic but once again that's just my personal opinion on the matter

Oh so you liked the custom character on Frontiers?
For me it was the worst part of that game! The Sonic levels were fun but there were just too many levels of that character that doesn't play like Sonic AT ALL.
I think it suffered the same way as DMC4 and DMC5 did, the best levels are the ones you can play as Dante and everything else feels like a filler and is keeping you away from playing with the character you really want.
I would love to see 3D Sonic games adding variation in a similar manner the 2D games did. Take for example 3&K and Mania, most of the characters play just like Sonic but have one special skill that makes they different while Sonic can use the elemental shields.
But in the end of the day, they all feel like the same if you ignore these.
It still feels like playing Sonic.
IMO the 3D Sonic games should just follow the boost mechanics and some 3D platform sections not those 2D sections on Colors and Generations, 3D Sonic is heavy and controls bad in 2D.
I'm probably an exception but I really enjoyed Heroes and Lost World, a mix with that with the boost stages from Unleashed and Generations would be fine by me!
I think this new open world Sonic game is trying to catch the new fans that came from the movie as the aspect of having Sonic running around free everywhere looks just like the movies intro IMO.

The problem I see here, has to do with the perception of the score. An overall score of 70 shouldn't be a bad grade, I think it's fair considering the game's issues (pop-ing, weird physics, poorly done open world). However, the Metacritic score makes the game appear to be on the same level as games like COD Vanguard, Gotham Knights, and Battlefield 2042 (some examples of games scoring close to 70). Which is baffling, considering those games are generally worse experiences, than Sonic Frontiers.
Now the user score in Metacritic, has always been problematic to say the least, since there is not a filter of some sort etiquette required to post. Wich is fair, is the user score after all. But tends to make the reviews not as fair as they should be and creates conflicts between people because of their opinions.

    - Imagine liking a Franchise
    - This Franchise has a bad product
    - This bad product makes the entire Franchise be taken as a joke, by everyone. No matter if the Franchise releases a good product after that.
    - Critics are harsh on the products your franchise releases, and the company that makes the products listen to them, scratching everything and going for the ''Safe route'' and making ok-ish and some mediocre games.
    - If you like the Franchise people make fun of you.
    - People say the Franchise never was good or has more bad products than good ones.
    - If you say something against that, no one will take you seriously because ''You are a fan of that franchise, you know nothing''
    - People say your Fanbase is toxic and the worst ever, just because of the loud minority, and you can't say nothing about it, because ''Heh, look at this fan of this franchise, am I right?''
    - Years go by, and not even critics are able to let go of *that one bad product* and keep taking jabs at the franchise left and right.
    - It all gets really tiring, but then the Company decides to be serious about it, and you finally get a glimpse of Hope, a return to the good old days, but then you see the cycle starting to happen again, and you are filled with concern about the future.
    ----
Like, I understand the fear the Fans have about it, they don't want to go back to the safe ''meta era'' days, they want Great Games, not ok-ish mediocre experiences, and with a company that listens to the critics and overall reception, seeing the negative reception (That some of it being unjustified) fills the fans with desperation.

Like, do you seriously believe the Sonic Fandom decided to group and hate bomb a game that you yourself said they love, just make Dunky look bad because he gave a dumb review? Or is it more likely Dunkys fans watched his video up to the end where he said "Hey look at this games score, this is a poopy game i think it should be lower hehee" and went and downvoted it? I'll give you a hint, it's not the sonic fans.
Sonic fans didn't get upset on twitter about Dunkys review, they went "Okay don't let Dunkys review spoil your enjoyment of the game." Then a few hours later, they got upset AFTER they saw the game being disliked bombed, and it got worse when Dunky started playing the victim and trying to blame Sonic fans for making him look bad. Plus isn't Dunky a publisher now or something? This is kind of ridiculous for him to be acting like this

This honestly wouldn't be a problem if it were literally any other company than Sega. The problem lies in that its Sega. Most people complain that these companies, especially Japanese game companies, don't listen to complaints or pay attention to reviews at all. Like say this was the new Pokemon game that comes out in like 4 days. Gamefreak and the Pokemon Company notoriously don't give a fuck about what people complain about or want in the games, ESPECIALLY people who are old enough to use review sites like metacritic. They have repeatedly made this clear by cutting fan favorite mechanics, areas, and events from games.
The problem with Sega is they are the EXACT opposite. They listen too much to reviews. They have cancelled entire games because of negative reviews and wildly changed their formula to try and "fix" complaints.
Herein lies the problem with Dunkey. I'm a long time dunkey fan dating back to when he was the definitive League of Legends RUclipsr. The fact that he could completely drop the game that made him popular, and somehow become EVEN more popular afterwards, is impressive by itself. HOWEVER, that series of events is already indicative of how Dunkey can manipulate his fans into doing stuff without ever actually telling them to do it. The whole reason Dunkey left League is because he got banned for literally telling a guy who was inting his game to go get gunned down in the streets like the degenerate he was (almost exact quote), and then had the balls to try and get Riot to remove his ban on the grounds that he was a famous youtuber. It remains one of the ONLY times ONLY TIMES that Riot fucking Games has ever made the right decision about literally fucking anything. It wasn't even a permanent ban, and yet he made like a 10 minute video where he threw a temper tantrum about Riot not giving him preferential treatment and removing the ban he RIGHTFULLY earned, culminating in him announcing he'd never make League content again. In said video, he never directly tells people to stop watching funny league videos or anything. But they did. It's considered one of the most important moments in the League RUclips community because it marked a permanent shift from people making funny comedic videos to just editing and posting stream highlights. He basically killed the career of all of his peers who couldn't or wouldn't follow him to other games or make the shift to stream highlights.
Dunkey is one of the last remaining vestiges of the "RUclips Golden Era". While he was never ever close in popularity to people like Idubbz, Filthy Frank, or others, his brand of humor and such remains similar. And the Idubbz comparison is surprisingly similar, because, whenever Dunkey posts a negative video about a game, that game is flooded with negative reviews from his fans. Just like how Idubbz viewers would mass unsubscribe from the people he did Content Cops on even though those old videos never explicitly told them they needed to stop watching or unsub from those people. It happened with Octopath, it happened with Xenoblade, it's happening again with Sonic Frontiers. It'll happen again unless he straight up tells people to stop doing it. Which he never will because, much like those other "Golden Era" RUclipsrs, his audience is mostly toxic assholes and edgy kids who would completely turn on him the minute he did something they didn't like.

Also when he defended TLOU2 like a fking spartacus he cried about people hating the game, and that is just hilarious that this dude has audacity to say that "others are crying cause someone has different opinion" and going full Alex Jones with some conspiracy theories that "sonic fans are giving 0/10 to Sonic Frontiers to own him". The ego of that dude is just wild.
Also presenting the game unfairly, shows bias that he holds against Sonic games. Calling out the inconsistent writing of tails and other sonic characters throughout the years. The game was written by Ian Flynn a writer for the sonic comics so he has been trying to merge together the inconsistencies and events of the part 25 years of sonic games and he has a great understanding of Sonic himself. There are more great moments in the Sonic Frontiers writing connecting past lore, funny jokes and meta commentary on the franchise as well as character interactions sonic fans have wanted for a long time even though they interactions are with 3 of sonic's closest friends. Even though the story isn't grandiose action, adventure, emotionally driven masterpiece it is really good and I'm sure anyone who cares about sonic and his characters will absolutely love the story.

The issue isn't Dunkey's response to the game nor his fans blindly hating it, but the negative reviews themselves. Sega has a long history of taking fan snd critics feedback to heart when it comes to Sonic games, and they are known to throw away a good game formula, instead of improving what they already have, and restart from scratch because of bad reviews. This was Sega's modus operanti throughout the 2010's.
Sonic Unleashed (2008) had a good gameplay formula, the last AAA Sonic game, but reviewers trashed the game saying the story was too bad, too many characters, etc. Sonic 4 Episode I got massive praise for being a mediocre 2D game with only Sonic and no story. Colors got praise for having simple story and dumbed down Boost gameplay. Lost World (2013) was made because critics started having the boost gameplay and praised the nostalgia pandering from Generations. Sonic Boom was made because after LW critics were tired of Sonic. Forces was made fans demanded a serious Sonic game, but critics also wanted Generations 2, and Sega couldn't risk another serious storyline because critics hated all Sonic games with serious stories.

The point of a review is to give your honest feelings on a game. If you think the game is garbage, then give it a bad review. What's the problem with that?

@@Breadn you actually have to play the game that’s why it’s called “review” not your random opinion on random media you know nothing about, we call that review bombing but if you played the game and think it’s trash then that’s valid if you played more than 30 minutes, which is why I put more stock in steam reviews because the play time is showed and you can weed out the trolls and salty haters from the legitimate criticism

You'd be absolutely correct that reviews cannot and should not take away our enjoyment from games. HOWEVER, the core Sonic community is always concerned that the series is on thin ice. They have abandoned successful game ideas and formulas before, which needed just a bit more refinement in a follow-up game to be truly excellent. Fans are concerned that tearing a game apart by having people just watch dunkey's nitpicking compilation and going to leave it a 0/10 would make SEGA force Sonic Team to go back to playing it safe instead of letting them build up from what many deem is a great foundation.

This game is so good, way better than the previous game forces. We basically got scammed out of 2 highly anticipated boss fights (shadow and chaos) we had a very promising villain (infinite) but he got bad writing . Sonic frontiers was way better, they used super sonic properly and made him a huge part of the game instead of a last resort. Then we have the characters, we already know about Amy, Tails, Eggman and Sage. We didn’t even expect knuckles (unless you have watched his video before the release) and they got good writing, their relationships were better than ever, Amy growing up from his addiction to sonic, Knuckles starting to realize the importance of friendship abit and I can’t really describe Tails yet since I didn’t complete island 3. Also another small remark, there was something about Giganto always popping up in the trailers (Giganto is the first boss btw) and I could guarantee that we thought it was gonna be the final boss because he showed a very threatening vibe. And guess what, we got tricked and he turned out to be the FIRST boss fight, with probably the most iconic theme in the game that it is even a meme. People should just look on the bright side of things for once.
