  • Here it is my slightly amateur dramatic decent down Ffordd Pen Llech at Harlech in Wales. The question is how will just over 2 tonnes of Volvo XC60 cope on a slippery almost 40% gradient? (especially when the driver's a complete pillock and forgets he has an AWD with hill-decent control)
*Yes I know the record has been handed back to Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand ;) - but Wales wins on the steepest part of the Gradient & it's much scarier!

Instead of Sport Mode, would have been better to drop it into second or even first gear. Hubnut did that in his Australian Ford Fairmont AU. He had bought the car in New Zealand and had taken the same car down the other "steepest hill" there. Looks like my kind of fun. While maybe not quite as steep, much worse is the North Shore of the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Canada. Twisty, and with a 50 mile per hour speed limit. It makes brakes smoke. Literally. My 240 has done it. Then again there is nothing we have asked if the 1990 Volvo 240 that it hadn't done, and that includes off road trail blazing! Arthur was 15 and Ma 75 when they got up to that caper together. I have never figured out how Ma or the car survived some of the things they did together. Keep in mind Ma was 60 when she bought Arthur and over the next 25 years they covered 200,000 miles together!

Had I put it in manual mode I would of been able to make of hill descent control to guide it down as I believe that uses a combo of the engine braking & brakes to keep it under 10mph. I'm sure it won't be the last time I visit that land-mark so I'm going to try again and hopefully do a better job of it next time :)
