How salmon spawn in Ireland's rivers

  • Atlantic salmon spawn in Irish rivers late in the year, from November to January. Choosing clean gravel areas of the river, female salmon (hen fish) lay their eggs in a depression in the gravel, which they create with sweeping movements of their tail to dislodge stones. This also dislodges freshwater invertebrates, such as caddis and mayfly nymphs, which the resident minnows can be seen feeding on.
The male salmon (cock) hovers nearby, defending the territory against rival males. Precocious parr (young male salmon which mature early) also shadow the female, waiting for a chance to fertilise some of her eggs.
When the female lays the eggs, the male fertilises them, with the precocious parr also darting in to add their genes.
The female then sweeps more gravel from upstream to cover the eggs in the redd, where they will develop over the next 3-4 months, before hatching out in spring.
