  • The series of videos captures a close up of another pair of Chinook salmon spawning in a Canterbury stream.
The actual spawning act is at the 7 min : 05 sec mark and the eggs can clearly be seen as the hen attempts to cover them with shingle.

      I use a GoPro Hero3+
The camera has to be positioned very near the spawning nest to get the best result.
The salmon do not seem to worry about it when they in spawning mode.

I have a question: how come they tend to mess up their eggs? I feel some of the digging actions actually messed up their eggs. Some got washed out and some got smashed by stones..

In nature they do tend to loose a lot of eggs yes.
From the very instant the eggs are laid they are either lost or predated.
The percentage of return of adult salmon is way less than one percent.

@@KevinBelcher yes. And gravel beds are essential spawning habitat referred to as reds. The eggs hold in small crevasses. Great vid!

Q: Do male salmon swim upstream as well? Is spawning the act of "mating" or the act of laying eggs or both? If you could please answer these questions for me; I can not find these answers anywhere. Thank you☺

    • @KevinBelcher
      @KevinBelcher  5 лет назад +9

      Thanks for the question
Chinook salmon in New Zealand have a life cycle that is typical of salmon in the North Pacific. The adults grow to maturity in the sea and migrate upstream to spawn, usually when they are three years old.
The spawning run usually occurs in late summer to early autumn.
Both males and females return at the same time.
They return to the same river system and stream as they were born.
The female or "hen" does all the work and digs a nest called a "redd" by fanning the steam bed with her tail.
The dominant male or "jack" who has chased off any smaller or inferior jacks spawns or mates with the hen at the very moment she lays her eggs by ejecting his sperm to fertilize the eggs in the nest.
The hen then immediately covers the eggs in the nest with stones.
Once she has rested and recovered from the exhausting task she digs another nest with her tail and the spawning or mating process is repeated.
She will dig more nests and deposit eggs in each until she has expended all her eggs.
She then covers over the entire area with stones.
The jack then goes in search of other females and will also mate with them if he can.
After spawning, which occurs in late autumn, all of the adults die.
Juveniles hatch in spring, and typically spend 3 months in fresh water before migrating downstream to enter the ocean in summer.
See my other chinook salmon spawning videos especially the May 2018 video which captures the act of mating/spawning in close up detail.
      Regards Kevin.

Kevin Belcher ~ thank you so much for taking the time and giving me such a great detailed response I will definitely check out your other videos I really appreciate you answering my question. My ten-year-old son was asking me and we were trying to find it on the internet and it was just saying that salmon swim upstream and we were thinking that they mate so only the female had to swim upstream your video and response clarified it very well....thank you. You just got a new sub. ❤

Kevin, this is an incredible video! I am putting together some salmon curriculum for students in Kitsap County, WA, USA and am looking for a photo I can use to introduce the phenomenon of salmon spawning--get the kids interested and asking questions about what's happening before they dive into the lessons to learn about salmon. Would it be ok if I used a screen shot from your video?
