I had that first Gino record with "People Gotta Move" and "Powerful People" and "Mama Coco" and it was hypnotizing. I can't recall how I heard about it. Maybe Gino was on "American Bandstand" or "Soul Train" but I was impacted by Gino Vannelli's honesty and sincerity in his music. It seemed he was coming from a real place feeling what he was playing deeply. They guy was not trying to play what was on the radio but what was in his heart.
That breathy voice on his song "Wild Horses"... and there's something magical about the way he overdubs his harmonies, "well it's me and you in a flat-bed truck in a foot of red mud, just my luck..." ... so sexy!!! I had forgotten all about those lazy summer days in the late 80's where you could get lost in music like his with no worries or cares in the world... if only I had known then how special that time was.
My record deal turned into demands I just couldn't do. I was so terrified and alone...never got to sing a note or audition for Capitol or Motown Records. I'm so happy for Gino. My birth certificate says, parents occupation, "musicians"....we will always be musicians.
Gino Vannelli was the first white artist to be on Soul Train David Bowie was the 2nd followed by Elton John,Average White Band & Tower Of Power all appeared on Soul Train that same year in 1975
Gino was the 3rd non-black artist. Elton was the 4th and Bowie was the 6th. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_who_appeared_on_Soul_Train#Performances_by_non-black_artists
Embarrassing that the interviewer had no idea that Herb Alpert's significance in this story was being the owner of A&M and not that he was a big artist. In any case, such a story would never happen today. Thank goodness for Alpert because I can't imagine a world without Gino's recordings.
Oh my god when I saw Gino Vannelli live back around the brother-to-brother album... not only did it seal the deal with the musicianship and that band but he stopped the show for an audio difficulty and talk to his brother about it in audio frequencies... led me to be a bigger better audio engineer my damn self...lol
Yet another example of great artists are discovered by other great artists. Not some marketing committee or corporate board. Other artists. It’s why music in the mainstream is so pathetic. Manufactured widgets for ears that don’t know that they don’t know good music..

Another story that shows that Herb Alpert is one cool dude

Living inside myself!!! I just wanna stop!!!! 2 Hits from Gino!
I am liking these stories. It is very insightful. Keep it coming.
It's good to hear that, spread the word!
Living inside myself changed my school childhood
Saw Gino Vanelli in Zurich. The man is hugely talented and is completely in control. And he has an own, very particular style.

He was so beautiful!
I enjoyed the hits but I think Brother to Brother is my number 1 pick right now. That song is amazing live.
I can see it now - "I"m not a kidnapper - I'm Canadian!"
just before Herb smacked him on the head with his trumpet.

You obviously didnt learn anything from the story..
@@watchinboats - You obviously are obnoxious.
Gino is one cool dude. He's not only aged very gracefully but he wanted to be on the best label around in the early 70s, A & M.
Love this story.
Gino, Great job.
Great voice ginno
I walked past that A&M studios many times in 1988.
welcome to the family
Gino had some pipes - back in the day!! Better management would have helped him!
