Watch Daniil Trifonov perform Chopin Prelude No. 4 in E minor from his album "The Carnegie Recital", released on Deutsche Grammophon.Trifonov's Carnegie Hall recital debut is bound to be a landmark event. In the past thirty years, Deutsche Grammophon has bestowed the honour of a live Carnegie Hall recording on only two other pianists: Mikhail Pletnev and Lang Lang. Recorded in February this year, this richly contrasted and spectacularly virtuosic programme includes much-loved classics by Chopin and Liszt. Trifonov was described by The Washington Post as "an heir to Liszt"- the dynamic young Russian has been hailed around the world for his breathtaking virtuosity and the intense, inspired originality of his musical interpretations.

Technically one of the easiest, interpretative one of the most difficult works of Chopin. Deadly simplicity...
one of the easiest, yet still difficult even techncally! Each hand doing something entirely different like this requires some decent separation skills. Also, just the left hand if to be played in such legato that'd do even without the pedal isn't anything easy
To the folks who say Trifonov plays this too fast -- Yes, it says "Lento." But the time signature is 2/2, meaning there are two beats to the bar, not four. In light of this, I think Trifonov's tempo is appropriate. If the the time signature was 4/4 rather than 2/2, his tempo would be much too fast.

Correct tempi not everything
As far as I know, the time signature has nothing to do with the tempo of the piece, only with the underlining pulse. 2/2 only means that you count the eighth-note chords in groups of four (i.e. in half notes), instead of groups of two (i.e. in quarter notes), and that they have to be accentuated accordingly: Xxxx Xxxx, instead of Xx Xx Xx Xx.
Not saying that a faster rendition of this piece is bad, I'm just wondering why everyone thinks that 2/2 means playing faster.
@@JustAnthon Fair question. You use the word "pulse." That's a well-chosen word. It tends to be the case across many musical genres that the pulse ends up at a slow-heartbeat tempo. Not always, but quite often. Think, for instance, of the Fantasy-Impromptu. Of course the notes are very fast, but the pulse is in the low 40 beats per minute. Pretty much the same pulse as in the second movement of Beethoven's op. 111, which is radically different music. So when you reset the pulse from 4 beats to two, the tempo tends to go up because the pulse wants to converge back to that slow-heartbeat rate.
@JustAnton 2/2 IS faster. In cut time, largo is now referring to the speed it takes to play a minim, IE four quavers, rather than a crotchet, ie two quavers.
Try it yourself - count a two in largo, then fit four quavers into each count. You'll find that you have to play the quavers quite fast to fit them in.
If he meant for it to be counted in a slow four he could have written it in crochet time.

Perfect. The tempo at which this piece lives, rather than the tempo imposed upon it by sentimentality. Bravo.
If you listen to this as If you've never heard the piece before, you won't realize that this is being played too fast. Honestly I really like this interpretation.

The tempo of this piece has become a matter of taste. It is noted as Largo, but on the other hand it's in 2/2 so what to do? Anything goes. In time, performances have slowed down considerably. Early recordings (by pianists who where taught by pupils of Chopin) played much faster even than this Trifonov rendering. Personally I find it much harder to make a convincing slow performance. That might indicate either that the character of the piece doesn't comply with that, or that I am a poor pianist. I refuse to comment on that. 😉
The only convincing slow interpretation of this prelude for me is by Richter.

Lol, I've notice about 2/3's or so of the professionals play it WAY faster than Largo and I never understood why, except if they are just playing a set and don't want to be such a downer...
@@joeythehat9 this is not WAY faster than largo, it's a bit faster but not that much. He's in the vicinity of 70bpm (sometimes a bit faster sometimes a bit slower), so he's somewhere between lento and adagio. There is a common misconception that this piece has to be played super slow because people play the left hand in quarter notes instead of eights

Fwiw, everybody losing their minds at how fast he's playing: he's counting in 2, not in 4. It's a bit crazy, but it's an artistic decision that can be defended.

I concur, because the melodic line can be broken up if this is played too much on the slow side due to the decay of the notes. Hard to keep that melody ringing out above the busy L.H. when it has completely died out already!
I do think it funny that Deutsche-Grammophon, just up ahead by a few comments, quotes The Washington Post as saying Trifonov is "a pianist ahead of his time" under this performance!

I hear this piece played by many musicians, even (gasp) Jimmy Page on electric guitar! When a musician plays this piece, regardless of the tempo, it is their interpretation and when played with passion, it us always beautiful
I actually like the faster tempo, it sounds very nice. I might give it shot. I usually play with a more relaxed tempo.
I don't think its too fast, it's just a completely different take on the piece. Instead of a funeral march its just like a merrier, normal march.

I must clearly be missing a point here since the guy is widely seen as "an heir to Liszt" and he is actually the winner of both Rubinstein and Tchaikovsky competitions (and came third at Chopin), but I am absolutely sure that somewhere above the score of this prelude Chopin specifically wrote "Largo". Using different nuances or ideas in a piece, I can relate to and understand. That is what distinguishes you among others. But using a whole different tempo for the entire piece? I mean, come on...

Yep, this IS NOT largo, you are absolutely correct. That is why this guy did not win and never will win Chopin. You have to be able to play slowly and calmly without being nervous and anxious it to be over.

Supposedly Chopin never played anything the same twice and was forever writing to publishers changing his mind about the score he'd posted etc. so I thought it was as authentic as any version. although the autograph I haven't clapped eyes on is apparently marked largo.

I think Chopin wanted this played at his funeral. He died of pericarditis and I've always thought this piece was the music of a dying heartbeat. I love Daniil but I think this is a little fast. Most play Chopin too slowly, it's true, and I think this interpretation can work, but just a little more slowly to avoid losing the colour. It's sonic pain, basically, and pain needs to linger a little more. Just my opinion, and I've no business arguing with a genius. Daniil should play it the way he feels it.

I think he is playing this just right. I heard this song many years ago and yearned to hear it again which I did when watching the movie "By the Sea" with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
They played it during the opening credits and also with a woman singing it.. then they played it again at the end of the movie...they were wonderful in naming the several songs that played during the movie, giving credit to the artists who provided the music.

There's something about the chord progression that makes a concert pianist play it much faster. Trifonov sets a good example of this, especially because he plays lots of Liszt. These kinds of chord progressions in Liszt's music are usually played really fast. So, someone who plays this kind of music with the speed in their fingers would speed things up with this chord progression, no matter how slow the tempo.

It is too fast and honestly, I do not like the fingering of the right hand. I do not like your hands.
As far as visible, the fingering is quite standard. Once he replaces the second for the third, nothing special about that. He moves his hand and fingers in a peculiar way, from the wrist out. In a slow piece like this you can do that. Probably he feels that he can stabilise the tone with that.

After Khatia Buniatishvili this sounds very rushed and anxious. Music should be played in piece with tasting it I learnt today from Khatia.

Well, here's a recital which demonstrates how to entirely ruin a masterpiece by being arbitrarily clever, i.e. increasing the tempo and thus crushing the perfect mood of sadness underfoot of trotting horses.

It’s cut time, 2/2 not 4/4. He chose this tempo on purpose. The last thing a musician focuses is to find the right tempo to state his musical ideas. My guess is that he chose this tempo so the 2/2 is felt and the harmonic progressions, the right hand singing and the inner line voice weren’t lost which are the most important aspects of this piece. Otherwise, you could make the notes sound beautiful but you become incapable to sustain the voicing to construct a chant which is one of the most important things to do when you play Chopin.
