Working Hard Ain’t Enough for Black Americans

  • In this Race and Difference Colloquium lecture, Dr. Darrick Hamilton (Assoc. Prof. of Public Policy, The New School) will present on the topic: “The (Economist’s) Burden: Why Studying Hard and Working Hard Ain’t Enough for Black Americans.”
Description: High achieving black Americans, as measured by education, still exhibit large economic and health disparities relative to their white peers, especially in the domain of wealth. I will discuss how the post-racial, politics of personal responsibility and “neoliberal paternalism” tropes discourage a public responsibility for the conditions of the poor and black Americans, and, instead, encourage punitive measures to “manage these “surplus populations.”
I will present an alternative frame, stratification economics, to better understand the paradox above. Ultimately, I will explore how the potential physical and psychological costs of stigma and, ironically, exerting individual agency, which in the context of racist or stigmatized environment, limit the role of education and income as protective factors for blacks relative to whites. (Feb. 19, 2018)
The James Weldon Johnson Institute for the Study of Race and Difference supports research, teaching, and public dialogue that examine race and intersecting dimensions of human difference including but not limited to class, gender, religion, and sexuality.

I find working hard is way better then sitting around playing play station or selling drugs. Even probation officers want criminals to work because your busy at work and not on the streets up to no good. In the bible God also says you don't work you don't eat. When a man is not working he is going to depend on food stamps or welfare for him and his family. Someone had to work hard to pay for that family to feed them. Hardwork helps you to carry your own weight in life. 3 things in life you need a third work another third is sleep another third is being with your family to have healthy life. So yes Hardwork is healthy and all men should work no excuse unless you are sick or disabled.

You have just described racism . Racism has more to do with political, financial, social, religious, media arts and entertainment color is just the catalyst but a powerful one at that. Racism is about oppression of an individual or groups of people . Power corrupts. Mandela said it's hard for the oppressor to know he's the oppressor when he's the one doing the oppression.

They are the 7 pillars of society. Is all I'm saying

    • @elreytriton
      @elreytriton 2 года назад +2

@@alfalfa yes, you are correct BUT you're missing the key point. When you put bias and prejudice into action that's discrimination. When you have enacted bias and prejudice on the group, local, and national level in all institutions for 400 years based on the creation of race, that's racism. It is ingrained into the dna of this nation and planet now. Bias is a negative feeling, for the most part. Prejudice is a pre judgey thought that's usually skewed due to believing stereotypes etc. When you behave and do things in the physical world based on that, you discriminate.

these are excellent ideas as I am studying sociology and especially about stratification but you stated in the beginning that they, the ones with Power, change the rules and credentials as the underclass begin to compete. Well, this levels the playing field and takes away their power so what incentive do they have to adhere to this? Yes it would greatly benefit others, I worked myself to death as a private nurse, now I am educating myself to debt by trying to obtain an education while spending the little cushion I have on fines, tickets and city fees so I agree with it all but they will not give up power or the privilege they have, they will work together with the lowest of their race than to work with the best of ours.

As well Asian American success is due to the fact most of them are immigrants that have made wealth and had good education back in their birth country. It’s not this thing of Asian people were discriminated against and then just became successful, that success was not American made.

More African Americans would be in the position to earn wealth, if in every profession, they didn't need to navigate and overcome so much bias. In the past, systemic racism was pervasive and it was made legal by the United States government. Some would argue the remnants of systemic racism are still a challenge, but thankfully many racist laws have been repealed since the Civil Rights Act. However, that didn't stop individual bias, which is now the current fight against racism. In my two industries, for example, which are education and real estate, bias runs rampant. The vast majority of America's homebuyers and sellers are white, and they only hire white realtors. Many black realtors, and black realtors in particular, are avoided by the nation's buyers and sellers. This results in a high turnover of black agents being forced to leave the real estate industry, because they aren't being hired as often as white real estate agents.
In education, the vast majority of principals who interview teachers for teaching positions at their schools are white females. In my 20 years in education, I've noticed there is a preference for white females, because the principals are white females. Far too often, principals will choose teachers who remind them of themselves, especially in affluent communities where public schools tend to be better supported and teachers get paid more. Affluent neighborhoods is where you will see a high concentration of white female educators and hardly any black educators with classrooms. The black educators are all concentrated in the worst schools in America, because those are the schools that usually give black educators opportunities to teach.
Not every black person is equipped with the skills necessary to navigate bias. Many people now assume racism is over, so they don't prepare their children for bias, especially bias that is difficult to prove. After many years of trying to get accepted, some black job applicants (with college degrees) might give up out of frustration because they are either unaware they're being discriminated against or they know it, but it would difficult to prove and too complicated to address with certainty.
To rid ourselves of bias that prevents people from having a decent job, people everywhere must realize accepting differences in the workplace isn't limited to accepting different skin colors. That is minimal acceptance. You are not truly being accepting of others in the workplace if the people you accept are brown, but they must also talk like you, be like you, and remind you of people you already know. Remember, there are different ways of being, and these too must be accepted.

80 million Native Indians were killed starved and died by biological weapons.. fever.
We should immediately give them land they can live ont have running water Healthcare roads, schools and a job to go to.
We need to give back California Texas Florida New York and many other states that were stolen from Native Indians.
As of 2023 every person will pay 20% of taxes to Native Indians for 10 years until we can do the paperwork and compensate them for the States we sold..

Add this point. Ensure all areas and positions of power include Blacks at the top as the rule makers and enforcers without need of "non-black" consent. This black representation should be at least four times the rate of the black population. All of those positions would be transferable only to Blacks for the next 200 years as approved by a committee to ensure Pan-Africanism (justice), thus that which benefits Blacks in America, would then benefit Blacks worldwide. Thus Blacks must have positions of power for a long time in America and in all Global Organizations. Then Blacks can affect change in every country. This will give opportunity to solidify this "New Deal."

Trying to tiptoe around the real issues we are in trouble because we won't tell the truth and deal with it the truth can never set you free and you don't tell it and then deal with it all of those statistics to say one thing setup setup setup okay so now we already know we've been set up we have been inoculated with diseases we have been slaughtered weather on the operating table or I'm shot down in Cold Blood we have been experimented on all of these things and more actually have happened

Dane Peters it is Dr Derity and his peers who agree with him, that reject entirely the impact of culture and behavior on outcomes. This is absurd in the extreme. Marriage, that is getting married and staying married is one of the most highly correlated statistics when looking at the American middle class, upper middle class and wealthy. How can a Social Scientist honestly seek to address why there is a racial wealth gap and completely ignore something so basic and positive as marriage? You cannot. It is an act of dishonesty.
