I don’t know why, but this film makes me emotional. Maybe it’s seeing the 125s here in their glory and knowing that they are going to the scrap yard fast
Them Intercity 125s were probably the best trains ever built and the most iconic trains to come from British Rail. It’s a shame that they are fast disappearing, just like all the good things to come from times past. The only thing people seem to keep from the past is bad things like bad memories of things that went wrong. They never see the positives that came out of back then.
I have this, on a VHS compilation, called “Great British Trains.” It has the fantastic Blue Pullman promotional film on it, with the wonderful pre-composed music, test team aboard, staff in the Pullman uniforms; serving boiled eggs, coffee, dodging the executives of the time with their broadsheets, and engineers testing on board equipment, emergency stop….(“testing, one, two, three, foo-ur”). Blooming Marvellous! R.I.P - B.T.F, you are sorely missed. Thanks for the upload.
I remember my visit to York Railway Museum in July 1987 and watching this on a screen several times, before completing a most excellent day of spotting up from Kent.
I remember seeing this at the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate in summer 1983, back then I must have watched it at least six times, funnily enough I still remember the music to it.. Tried searching for this a few times and couldn't find it .. first time I've seen it in about 39 years...
If I remember rightly, the London to Brighton film did have clips of the driver, but both films are great. I used to have the 8mm copy of the London to Brighton run.
If trains went that fast people would get off at the other end looking like metalheads and would've forgotten why they took the train journey in the first place. INTERCITY - Getting you there on time whether you like it or not!
Again this was when the UK had industry! Remember the HST ? It was too advanced and made the passenger’s sick and all they do now is let the the passengers tilt with the train. Brilliant engineering just like jet powered VTOL that the British designed but it’s all been sold
The train in the video is the HST. You’re thinking of the APT. The sickness issue was quickly resolved by reducing the degree to which it tilted. The government declined to fund upgrading the WCML to accommodate the APT’s service speed of 155mph, thus limiting it to a maximum of 125mph. As such, the business case for operating such a specialised, expensive and high-maintenance train evaporated, so the project was cancelled. The tilting technology was sold to the Italians, but much of the rest of the design formed the basis of the very successful InterCity 225. Passengers are not left to “tilt with the train” on the WCML. Tilting Pendolinos and Voyagers have been in service for over 20 years.
@@nkt1 I agreed the APT ( advanced passenger train) That was counterbalanced inside for the passengers to keep them level! My mistake and you are correct that this government would not fund like supersonic VTOL and most UK industry is now gone or foreign owned
@@Then.72 Tilting trains are not counterbalanced to keep passengers level. They tilt into the curves, in the manner of bicycles and motorcycles, so as to reduce, but not eliminate, the centrifugal force on passengers, thereby increasing comfort.
@@nkt1 yes that is what I have put in my first comment! The APT not HST was too advanced being counterbalanced which caused seasickness to the passengers and letting them tilt with the train was the answer
That trains goin more like 500 mph and the only shots that were real were the inside the cabin shots which is a vast difference hahah. Cheers from John in Australia
'Hmmm' not my reality of travelling by 125 trains in the late 70s & early 80s, as if we all travelled 1st class 'really'? sometimes you managed to get a seat on 2nd class 🤣
What’s wrong with it. I like it and it’s a whole lot better than the stupid music they put in stuff now. Just another reason why I don’t like nowadays much.
Wow. Looks awesome. In reality It was just awful. It’s so heartbreaking to realise “British Railways” actually were and became about the worst in the world.
Actually not the worst, but a lot of potential was wasted. Other countries took advantage of this to improve their infrastructure, while we did the research and then made little to no use of it because the penny pinchers were in charge.
Total joke it is now..since it was all sold off to foreigners and privatized. We once had a railway system providing a service in the National Interest and the subsidy back then was a fraction of what it is now. Is this what they mean by 'progress' or is it just a race to the bottom? Even now I would sooner get a train to London from Doncaster, rather than waste 4-5 hours on the M1 going nowhere slowly, with a bunch of ugly German cars forever stalking my back window....

Remember this film so well, especially the soundtrack. First watched it in early 90's when I were a nipper

Does anyone know what the name of the music track is? I love that synthesiser sound.
Where's Jimmy? After all, isn't this, "The Age of the Train"?!
Thanks for giving us these film's,
Another Superb Piece of Gold ⭐
A Great Britain once loved & luckily were there ...🥲
Hittin the playback speed X2 for 2500mph!
Redbull instead of diesel
Mate they only went 125mph…. Check your maths
I use to see this video at the national railway museum in York
Back in the 80s.
The music is ace!
In Australia we have a similar tra8n called the XPT
what a gem the old paxman valenta
A good engine that sounded wonderful.
"Did you threaten to over rail him?"

I was just waiting for Roy Budd "Carter Takes a Train" to spark-up.
Look at the old sweat driving the train 😂 ex steam man no doubt ; bet he’d seen better days back then in ‘82 👺
These were the days….
Wow check the size of that First class yellow stripe!
Best train to hit the British rails
When HS2 opens they should do a remake of this. :)
Yes! Intercity 2500
Excellent, I’ve been looking for this for ages !
And at one point Cleethorpes.I remember when I was a kid hearing them go past early in the morning on the first train of the day.
I saw the title and assumed it was a typing error!
The days when the East Coast Main Line had proper trains
Unlike the Hitachi rubbish we have now
I still think the London to Brighton beats it with the complete journey unbroken by clips of people etc (which probably hide breaks in the footage!).
If I remember rightly, the London to Brighton film did have clips of the driver, but both films are great. I used to have the 8mm copy of the London to Brighton run.
In the year 2000 we'll actually travel this fast....
Who takes a baby in first class...?
This is actually just about the cruising speed of Concorde…
If trains went that fast people would get off at the other end looking like metalheads and would've forgotten why they took the train journey in the first place.
INTERCITY - Getting you there on time whether you like it or not!
Must have been such a leap as a driver. Steam to diesel.
For heavens sake, Bring Back British Rail..!
How do you even get these videos?
Downloaded or transfer recorded from dvd box set
Can you imagine him disguising himself as a train and just wandering through the archives? That is what he does and nobody notices.

By my reckoning, if the external shots were to be accurate, the train should have passed the camera in less than half a second.
*Gimme a ticket for a FAST train ...* 'We are now travelling at Mach 1.6866888!'
No offence, B B R. Thank you for your creations.
Stay free. Rab 🍻 😎 🌠
A lot of the film looks like its been sped up. 125 MPH isnt that fast.
That's why the publicity film was called Intercity 1250

Not as much of a joke as your English exam results were.
