The thing that reached my heart Scotty is that you said these individuals’ fate is to be a small innocent creature and that puts things into a whole perspective, putting yourself in their little paws helps

In my 18 years of having Guinea Kids, I've found for the most part, they are home bodies. Years ago I had 2 male piggies that absolutely loved to sit on my lap, outside on the front porch. All of my Guinea Kids over the years have been ok with riding in the car going to the veterinarian. The 5 piggies I have now are definitely home bodies and are relaxed and feel safe here at home.

Nice to hear that, i hope they have good long lives, which one of your guinea kids lived the most? I want mine to live very long,70% hay 20% pellets, 10% veggies with lots of clean purified water here

@mr.luicifer6343 thank you, I'm always tried for the most years with my kids. Sara was my beautiful long hair girl and she was 3 days away from turning 8 years old when she passed away. That was back in 2015, Sara still holds the record of the longest life. Currently, 3 of my 5 kids are going on 5 years old and still very healthy. I've found sometimes you can do everything right, but due to genetics they just didn't live long. I had 2 males and a female that lived to 3.5 years before I had to put them to sleep due to constant bladder stones with the males and bladder cancer with the female.

I have never thought they are the kind of pets you can bring everywhere. You can watch videos with piggies in the car, walking on the streets following their human or inside a bag at the market. I don't think they enjoy any of that, maybe with repetitions they get used to, but after a lot of unnecessary stress. Piggies are happy in their own environment, where they feel safe and have everything they need.
Of course they can travel when you move or take them on vacations, that's different.
I hope people understand the true nature of guinea pigs as pets.

My first guinea pig loved to be held and would climb up on my shoulder and crawl under my long hair. She had the skills to stay on my shoulder without slipping, so she liked to ride on my shoulder wherever I went and would lick my earlobe to tell me when she needed to get down to pee. Then she would stand in front of my feet and look up to tell me that she wanted to be picked up again. I have never had another guinea pig that I could trust to stay balanced on my shoulder, but I had one who liked going anywhere with me and even didn't mind being picked up by strangers. She wasn't afraid. I had a skinny pig who liked going out to specific places like parks, where she could eat grass and stuff but was afraid of strangers. My current two are completely the opposite. They only want to stay in their cages and won't even let me hold them. When I try, they run off my lap, across the couch, and back into their cages. I think you just have to introduce your guinea pigs to a lot of different situations when they are little and watch their behavior closely as they grow up. They will let you know what they like. Just don't force them to do things that they hate or are afraid of.

Great video. We have traveled on road trips with our piggies for years for over 11 years. While driving we too do not attach the water bottle. To make sure piggies stay hydrated, I give them cucumber, celery and fresh herbs as travel snacks (If trip is more than 2 hours, I will give them hay). I offer water in a tiny bowl at rest stops. We have it down to a science. They have large carrier. I made a collapsable C & C Cage (2 panel x 8 panel) which I permanently zip tied together in X formation for zero up and down movement. It folds flat. I have it separated into two halves which makes it easy to over lap panels to 6 panels in length if the space is limited. I only need the corner pieces (8 total) and a few extra zip ties to put it together. I have our Guinea Dad water proof liners underneath with a layer of super thick plush fleece on top. I bring an extra layer of same fleece for a spare so I can wash the old fleece. For hidys, I save card board boxes and pre cut them but leave them flat for transport. I have a "Guinea Go Bag" and always keep a roll of packing tape in there to assemble along with extra zip ties, food bowl, corner pieces, extra fleece, Vitamin C, food etc. I keep a master list of piggy travel essentials in the bag so nothing is forgotten. I use the carrier for the hay station and tape the door open from the top. Water bottle is attached to the metal carrier door.

I've only ever had one piggy who didn't know she was a piggy (lol) and loved to hang out with me all the time, everywhere. I swear no one ever told her what a guinea pig was supposed to be like and she had no fear or reservations. But all of my other piggies are and were definitely home bodies.

My piggies live in our lounge with us in a safe open pen at waist level with an upper ledge which they love to sit on to watch telly with us! We have a holiday home and they have the same pen there. My two boys travel in a cat carrier in our car, anything bigger would worry me if they were being thrown around in it. They have some cucumber and carrot for hydration on the three hour car journey that they are used to. They love being let out to see their ‘new’ pen!! If we holiday anywhere else it has to be pet friendly and they come with us. Love my piggies ( I’m 72) 🤗

You are incredibly diplomatic about this subject, I would say, in my opinion, my Guinea pigs are happiest in their own space. Their c&c enclosure is their home, their safe haven. The only time I take my piggies out is transporting them to the vet, or to their boarding place when we go on holiday.
They have floor time in their room where their cage is, and lap time every evening with us. That can last from 5 mins 😂 to ( sometimes ) 30 mins.
In my opinion, Guinea pigs a very precious little beings who need to be kept safe and away from any dangerous situations.
Fantastic video Scotty as always 😊

I clean them up before bed every night with clean hammocks and blankets and fresh hay in their hay feeder. Unbelievable the mess that two small animals can make 😻

My son did two long road trips to two different destinations with two different Guinea pigs. He drove once from Boston to Denver because his girlfriend was relocating with her Guinea pig to Denver. Teddy pig did well on the trip. Second trip was when his fiancée got a job in Alaska and he drove with her and their Guinea pig to Anchorage from Denver. Rosemary the piggie, also did well on that trip. Now Rosemary is in her permanent home!

I have an adopted piggy that must have had something happen to her that had something to do with a carrier as you have to fight to get her in and she cries and runs around constantly until you get where you are going. I have my son drive and I hold her om my lap in a cuddle cup and pet her; we only go to the vet. Her friend is fine to travel but both of them prefer their cage.

Thank you for the continued AMAZING subject matter! I feel one of my 2 girls is more fragile than the other. I worry about UTIs. I live in Central CA and I drove about 4 hours to take my girls for health checks and to meet Saskia at the LAGuinea Pug Rescue and the next morning I woke up to the first ever hooting noise of a UTI. The stress from the car was too much and as much as I really want to take them back, I’m concerned about that very long drive. It as very noticeable (even as a new piggie owner) just how stressed the car ride makes them. It’s like you said, is it in your piggies best interest to go. Some do well in the car and some don’t. Excellent topics as always!!! I do have a question, off topic. Can they have fresh Maple tree branches?

I think you mean URI. I have a pretty detailed video about traveling on the road with guinea pigs, stress can lower the immune system but by itself I don't think would cause a respiratory infection. Giving regular probiotics and additional vitamin C and making sure the cage is as clean as possible and as big as possible. Giving filtered water and making sure to give high quality pellets and hay.

I do travel to my "home" area (which is typically a 6 hour drive one way) several times a year to visit family. I am there now and couldn't leave my piggy. He is with me, did fine in the car although I know he is always happy to be settled in once we arrive, and he seems to enjoy the slightly different environment. He gets a little extra floor time and lap time, and I care for him here just like I do when we are at our permanent home. He's a very happy piggy. And I'm a very happy piggy mom. 🤎🐹🤎

Shrimp, Pippy, Fizz, and Gizmo were so hilarious in this video with all their drinking and Shrimp eating hay. Bison was so rumbly too when Pippy came by. They are all so cute! When I was still working in an office (been remote for 3 1/2 years now YAY), I used to think all the time about bringing them to the office. I couldn't stand being away from them so long - with transportation and my long hours, it was really hard. I missed them so much! However, one thing I would think about is where I used to work, our office was so freezing. It was great for me, not so much for piggies! The only time I really brought my pigs out was the times I have moved. They have gone on long distance moves by car with me and also on the plane! I was so scared about bringing my last 2 piggies on the plane in the cabin because I was so sure their ears would pop. Actually, they did better than they do in the car. They caught so much attention because everyone thought I had a cat in my carrier and were all so surprised at how "big" my piggies were. The trip through the TSA checkpoint was crazy but it worked out.

I love how you politely say, please do what’s best for them and consider what they want. I’d be like, no, do not bring your Guinea pigs with you to the park and while shopping, you selfish human, and while you’re at it, you should not have a Guinea pig because you have no idea how to properly care for them! They are prey animals and should be protected and made safe at all times-at home! From a piggie mommy of 16 years.

Nailed it...I have only taken Harriet one time to visit my preschoolers to learn about her and that was enough. She was wonderful with one of my special needs preschoolers, but that was enough for one visit. Other than that, a vet visit for Harriet and Clementine and also when I boarded at the vet. My girls are most comfortable in their home, when I take them out for lap time, for playpen ....they have all their comforts, their food, enrichments, cozys, hides, hay and water. To me, it would not be in there best interest to take them out here and there. It would be only seving my needs and not their needs and my Harriet and Clementine's needs come before my needs.

Nini always travels in her hard carrier. I keep a running vocal commentary going unless we are in a crowded area or I am doing stretches. If I don't talk I make periodic noises like I do at home to reassure her. She has her diaper pad and blankets and I have layers of newspaper underneath. I have a travel bag of pellets and different hays. She is usually quiet at the Vet but she burrs and such in transit to let me know if something bothers her. If I don't feel comfortable talking I am always peeking in the slats at her-often she is looking back at me. Usually I have one of my fingers somewhere in her sightlines. She doesn't mind the trip she MINDS the destination. If it is a warm day I hang outside with her for a while so she doesn't have to hear the dogs and cats complaining. Sometimes in winter our Vet place can get cold in the waiting areas. I always bring my old coat to put around her carrier. Because we are often outside I place part of the carrier in a small bag or two for insulation. Often I have a regular trash bag to shield the carrier if it is raining or snowing. Umbrellas don't always work and I usually have my crutch on me because my balance isn't great and I have arthritis in my feet and ankles. Sometimes if the weather is really bad I place the carrier in an old custom made extra large L.L. Bean bag so I can 'wear' Nini. She, like her late sister Kali and brother Munchkin, often sleeps. Coming home especially she conks out like she walked there. When we get to the final travel point she gets antsy. I tell her why do you think I wasn't always in the greatest mood when I came home? I think as long as they know they are with me and I don't try to do too many errands before or after they are fine. When we get home she drinks a lot of water-I used to feed the Kids water by syringe until my old Vet told me to stop it because they could asphyxiate. She then zonks out for the rest of the night. Nini like Kali and Munchkin has even had to go into the grocery stores with me. I keep the carrier largely covered and on the 'shelf'. I talk quietly to her and I don't go too far from the carriage. Always warn her if she won't see me for a tiny bit and always say I'm back. No one seems to notice.

I used to take a pet rat with me around town, even into the Blockbuster store when they existed. Imagine the looks when a poo rolled down my arm or someone noticed her hiding under my hair 😮 But guinea pigs? Nope, neither of my boys would like it.

      @ScottysAnimals  9 дней назад +1

Yes, understanding the difference between small animals is crucial to providing them the security and care they need. Rats are not really prey animals in the same way. They are extremely social, extremely agile and much more curious.

Better to be carried around in walmart than locked in a hot car. A vet's nurse once told me a horrible story from when she was a little kid. Her guinea pig had giving birth while she was at preschool and the mother decided it was was a good idea to take those piggies into the car to show her daughter.- Why? Already stupid enough - But then she forgot them in the car and the babies died.
