In this wide-ranging interview, James Scott Bell and I discuss aspects of making a living with your writing, including discipline and writing tips, plus mindset and how art and commerce can play happily together!
James Scott Bell is is the best-selling and award-winning author of thriller novels, zombie legals, historical romance, and lots and lots of excellent books on the craft of writing. He’s a professional speaker, teaching novel-writing and other skills for writers.
Today we're talking about his book, How to make a living as a writer.
The audience of writers that James writes for and the influence of freelance writers on today's indie authors.
What James is interested in currently including boxed sets for his writing craft books and investing in the future by paying for exposure in alert newsletters other than BookBub.
The goals behind joining a box set, including discoverability and exposure to a wider audience.
Writing quotas and production plans and why this structure actually encourages creativity, as well as how to figure out what your production goal should be.
Combining study of the markets with what you love to write and merging those with a production schedule.
The strategies James uses to hold himself to his production schedule, including the 'nifty 350'.
Why writing prolifically isn't enough to earn a living writing. Why studying the craft of storytelling matters and where raw talent falls into this mix.
The importance of the marriage between art and commerce for those writers who want to earn a living from their writing.
On the sense of joy readers experience when a writer is having fun.
The challenges of shifting from writing non-fiction to fiction and how non-fiction authors can use their strengths and apply those to writing fiction.
James' beginnings as a writer and letting go of the belief that unless you're born with the talent to write you can't do it.
The challenging feelings all writers face including whether they'll be able to do it again.
On the advantages for indie authors of not being locked into a contract and being able to test the market with new ideas and a variety of book lengths.
Why writers need to grow 'rhino skin'.
On the options available for hybrid writers and when to leave emotions out of publishing choices.
Why writers should operate like a movie studio.

I watched his lecture "How to write an American Best-seller". I can't recommend this guy enough.
Everything I hear from Bell is helpful. I'm so glad he loves sharing what he has learned, rather than hoarding to all to himself.
Agreed. His attitude and generosity within writing is inspiring and empowering, he’s a great teacher and guide on the path of becoming a storyteller.
I feel vaguely comforted to know that everyone else experiences the same flat panic that I do about writing. 30 projects? my to do list doesn't look so bad...
So much to think about!
Thanks, guys!
My emotional goal right now is to FINISH my novel.
Go for it :)
His Plot & Structure book for ‘Write Great Fiction’ series is fantastic. John Truby tries to belittle those who teach the 3 act structure in his book, Anatomy of Story, but fact is, James Bell’s book is more useful, concise and interesting to read! James is a great teacher.
I enjoyed listening to the interview, to me as an author, fiction is creativity, I must admit I love writing my stories and I love promoting them too. It inspires me to write more.
Love her accent!
This is a really good one for me. Will rewatch from time to time. Thanks. :D
I watched this whole video, because its very informative.
This is a really great interview and podcast. I listened to both. Great work Joanna!
Love this interview. Thanks Joanna!
A Course in Discipline by Mr. Tran.
The secret to life: Discipline.
Without discipline, nothing can be achieved.
Without discipline, nothing has value.
Without discipline, everything is worthless.
He who has discipline, has everything.
He who has no discipline, has nothing.
Discipline never disappoints.
(A discipline man will never disappoints you and an un-discipline man will always let you down.)
Be discipline or be punished. Suffering is good. It brings about discipline.
Discipline always wins.
Discipline is life's greatest secret, life's most valued treasure, and most satisfying gift.
Life is easy when you're disciplined and hard when you're not.
Discipline is the mean to all ends.
Success is a system and it requires discipline to operate it. Without a system, there is no success.
Your life will never be complete without discipline--no matter what materials you possess in your life, who you married, where you live, what you do for a living, you will always be incomplete. A fulfilled life is a disciplined life.
Definition of discipline: Repeat (to the intelligent standards from your mind that you have set).
Be disciplined or be punished.
Remember forever.
I wonder if there are others out there like me who have been disappointed by discipline for this reason: I never know how much is enough. I push and push until I burn out. But I don't know how to rest because if I'm not pushing, I feel as though I'm wasting time, accomplishing nothing. And I fear accomplishing nothing. But I can feel my wonder and joy drain away the harder I strive. Each push makes me feel further behind.
@@Acrosurge Proceed with mind or get crushed like an ant. To think and then to do. Discipline is only in action when everything else is set in position. Or else failure will result. Going wild like a madman is not discipline. Discipline is the result of a precise calculation. Success is a system. No system, no success. Success definition: To finish what you started. This is all in my NO Limits Philosophy. NO means "Never Over." Enjoy. Gratis.
I disagree with this. Discipline has definite value but it is not an all or nothing thing and it certainly doesn’t dictate quality. There are many creatives out there without discipline who can still produce and produce high quality content at that.
I love this interview!
An interesting opening about titles not being copywrited. I have read a part of an adult book called "Hyde and Seek" and I have written a book called "Hide and Seek" which is a middle-grade novel for kids aged 8--11 and both books are radically different. I'm relieved that titles aren't copyrighted because it would make life very difficult if they were.
They are in German, but not in English :)
I posted this below, but I'll throw it up here too. How does one rest and refuel?

awesome interview!
Thank you for a great show.
Can you add a link to the book on writing with multiple authors he was talking about, thanks
My next book is going to be called “Gone with the Wind - Zombieland.”
Wonderful interview! I can't find the Writing Success boxed set on Amazon. Can you please provide a link?
I think it was a short term thing, but James's other books are all there.
Thanks. I really enjoy your interviews.
Where is link You mentioned you would include in video?
Is there a podcast on successful research for fiction?
Here's my article on it - www.thecreativepenn.com/how-to-research-your-novel-and-when-to-stop/
Why have the 3 books been withdrawn? And who withdrew them?
My guess is that she withdrew them herself and these are non-fiction books that need to be updated every few months. I remember Joanna mentioned once that non-fiction can be a pain as you need to stay up to date and you need to edit them periodically and I know she has written non-fiction.
Should have put Shining spoiler. One of those books I won but never get around to it. X-D
Own not won and this device won't allow editing? .
