🛠️ ESSENTIAL SETUP ADVICE: In Unreal Engine, go to your Settings (Topright), Plugins, and ensure Alembic Groom Importer is checked and Groom (Just type in Groom in the search and they will appear). Remember to restart your project after enabling it! Made a little video here to show you below:

This step is vital for importing the Alembic file from Blender seamlessly. Without this, your hair creations might not transfer correctly!

Followed this tutorial to a T and get "failed to import" error. It says "please see output log for details" and when I check the output log, the error says "failed to import. See output log for details."
EDIT: if anyone has this problem, make sure you have the Groom Importer plugin enabled. I missed that
Thanks man, pinned this! Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. Here is a quick video showing plugins needing to be install (they are

@@promptmuse Woow - You are fast -- Installed the plugin but still is importing as a static mesh... .
Being a chrome domed fellow myself, adding hair to my characters always brings a tear of reminiscence to my eye.
🤣 Give them bad hair styles, we still control these avatar puppets and their fates, for now !
The most helpful Hair Curves tutorial I've seen so far

Wow ❤ so straight forward and no hassle
I have not try to do it yet, but this is the best tutorial I have ever seen about the groom! Good job! You are great!
Thank you so much for this video. Have been struggling for a few years now trying to make the slightest progress on a main character. The hair proved to be complicated even with the new blender nodes. I was able to follow along and I actually got it. Bouncy but it's there. Now for some clothes.
Awesome ! Yes onto he the clothes !!! I may make an update onto this video with some extras. But would love to add clothes 🫡
Thank you so much for the video! It is very easy to follow and I learned a lot as a Blender beginner :)

Thank you so much for this, was going crazy trying to figure out how to export to UE, converting to particle system was the part I was missing. Cheers
great tutorial! I am using CC4 characters, so the simple attach worked for me. I had to play with the parameters in the hair groom to make my hair look like something, and I had to tweak the physics, but I got a decent little curly afro.

Yeah would love to. Something I’m looking at the moment. 🙏🫶
THANK YOU ,no matter what i do,when i activate physics in unreal.only a random part of the hair will animate no the full head?
Thanks for this in depth tutorial ! Is there any nice looking hair 3D model library somewhere ?
Check the Uneal market place for hair :) Some on there to purchase
Thanks so much for the tutorial! Now how do I export this custom haired metahuman to my metahuman library? Can somebody help me because I've been looking for a solution for so long :(( I want to use this character in my game but I just can't find a way to import it!
Great tutorial and to the point! Loved it! I was wondering if there is a way to have our hair permanently tied to the metahuman for every project (so i we have to do this import every time)? Maybe make an asset pack migration or something like that? Do you know of anything I can do, or another tutorial that may show that?
u look like chanel preston
Hey~ this is a great great Tut!! I followed this for 5 times to understand the process but when I import my hair in UE, there's nothing. I double click the hair file to see detail... and also there's nothing. Can you help me identify anything that might be worth checking again?
Thank ypu for your tutorial! I have a problem: when I trying to create binding it failes with message: ''failed to create groom binding''
I've been trying to add custom facial hair for a year now, this video is great but when I try to bind the groom asset I get an error every time.
Hello friend, woud you be able to let me know what your groom asset error in UE says (If it indeed says anything at all). Hopefully its an easy fix
Ok so I fully restarted and got everything working except the mustache is clipping through the face when I use live link. The beard I made is working now though so I'm not too sure why that is. @@promptmuse
I restarted from the beginning and was able to get all the binding issues to work. The only issue now is clipping in the mustache when using the live link. The beard (different groom asset) moves with the jaw perfectly fine but for some reason the mustache isn't working the same. @@promptmuse
Don't know why but when i am adding interpolated hairs the curves and everything else is
disappearing
When I tried bringing alembic file to other file than lighting preset, (game particularly, ) it says there's an error importing the hair file.. Is there a way to fix this? also, what if I want to use the character with this custom hair in other environment as a third person player?
I made long hair style and the hair seems to go inside the body (torso) is there a way to fix this?
hello! great tutorial! i've made a few grooms that have worked but recently i have this issue - when i add the binding asset to the groom it seems to shift and doesnt fit the head? everything works well until i put on the binding asset. Has this happened to you??
unreal doesn't recognize it as groom, it opened another window which lets me choose between static mesh, geometry cache and skeletal mesh. I followed all the export settings and I don't know why its not the groom one.
EDIT: the "Alembic Groom Importer" plugin inside unreal engine was turned off. make sure it is turned on.
Thank you for your guidance on this @yogevos, been away from my Pc so just manage to get a little video together for anyone who is stuck www.patreon.com/posts/supplementary-97824272?Link&
Thanks! I actually had the same problem.
Thanks for the help 🙌
Thank you for the instruction. I really want to create custom eyebrows. Will you show me how in Blender? They don't have many female eyebrows, but eyebrows are so important to make a face.
Great tutorial, just have one problem, when I convert the curves to the particle system, the shape of the hair changes, despite already applying the modifiers, increasing the strand steps helped, but still do not fully solve the problem. Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thanks for this great tutorial! All worked for me, except one thing: the hair roots are not sticking to the skin. They react to movements, following the head, gravity and skin deformations, but the hair roots seems floating, not attached / pinned. My character has very short hair (like a 3 day beard) and they penetrate into the head when he's moving. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Thank you very much! 🙏
When I try importing the alembic to Unreal it doesn't give me the groom import box, just alembic cache import. I think all the export settings were the same, and I added the groom import plugin someone else mentioned about in the comments. Any suggestions what I should do?
Edit: I figured out I needed to remove the normal alembic import plugin for it to work.
I wish there was a tool to convert hair particles to cards/ribbons
i love the tutorial so far but from someone who learned maya before blender i have a few questions :
1. 7:43 - Enable Scalp Collisions button isnt there?
- The Scalp Collision button seems to not appear for me? Is it something that has to be activated in the plugins?
2. How to ”smooth” the hair ?
- In Maya, there is a parameter called CV that allows you to control the number of control vertices (CVs) on each hair. In blender, i see that its 8 by default but id wish to upscale that number so i have more control over how the hair bends when i comb it. How do you do that?
3. 9:11 Everything in the Asset Browser is missing ?
I only have one thing when i open the ”All” option and its a thing called Unassigned. I dont have Hair nor all the hair options.
Thanks for answering love u xox
FOUND THE ISSUE !!! A very important setting that wasnt mentioned is before even starting the tutorial make sure that, in Blender, you go to Edit - Preferences - Interface - Developer Extras and make sure its ENABLED !!! This will fix you many problems along the way like not being able to enable Scalp Collisions due to the button not appearing (7:43) & will make everything in the Asset Browser finally appear (9:11)
AHAHAH that intro LOL
Having an issue in 5.4 where my unreal is freezing on the “importing hair asset” screen does anyone know how to fix?
Is there a way to send this character as a new character on the web editor?
All I needed from your video was: Particle system ,abc, import to UE…. The most annoying part is dealing with that particle system until you are actually able to get some decent looking hair style in blender. And then more tweaks in Unreal engine….
(Solved) Thank you so much for making this amazing tutorial. I am having issues with the curl modifier. when I adjust frequency, nothing appears to change, curls don't seem curl more, I deleted the guides and added new ones with 18 segments. The curls seem to be very low poly. very harsh sharp turns instead of a smooth curl. ***FIX*** I had the frequency set to high on the curl modifier (0.47 vs 0.047)
So after I bind the groom and the facemesh, I found the bund one is the "extra" one and because it was not direct on the head, I needed to adjust location, now after binding, it was relocated to the ground and I cannot move it anymore. I tried to unbind the groom in BP and wanted to adjust the "extra" one's location, but I cannot delete the extra one, there is no such a thing in the outliner. And before binding both are in the same place, only after binding the location of the extra one moved and cannot be adjust anymore...
If Unreal wants to import your Alembic (.abc) file as static/skeletal mesh, make sure to select proper extension (Alembic hair strands instead of all files).
I’m curious, do you know how far away implementing this is from making a character customization screen in Unreal? Like it’d be sweet to have some preset styles, but I’d love for the player to have sliders to choose the length of each of the sections or quadrants of hair. Or have hair grow over time in the game.
Can you make it a little bit more stylized or make a guide in how to use hair cards with metahumans!!!
Oh yes on my radar !
Thank you for the very good tutorial. When I bind Groom, the Groom disappears. Is there a solution?
Did you buy some extra assets, I notice thes a lot more hair assets in your Blender assets draw then seem to show by default?
No, hmmm are you using the same version of blender? The latest version is 4.0
@@promptmuse Yes
My new issue is that when I import my hair into Unreal, the density is unbelievably low. I can't increase it any further without crashing my very powerful computer. Something is clearly wrong here. I can see my character's scalp from every single angle,.
question: when importing alembic file it opens an alembic cache import option and doesn't give me groom import option(the plugins are installed) it only gives me the options of importing as static mesh or geometry cache or skeletal... and even importing it as static mesh it only imports the scalp without the hair... can you help me fix it?
ok.. after hours of trying I figured the problem. for anyone that might have the same problem you have to UNCHECK "show emitter" for BOTH render and viewport in particles (in blender)
Great tutorial. The only problem I'm having with custom hair is, when I bind it, it flips it in the wrong direction and there seems no way to correct it.
I think it's because I moved my model from its original position before I added the hair. Even though I can line it up, as soon as I create the binding it flips it around again.
Oh thats crazy, not seen that error yet (Seen a lot though!) In blender ctrl + A and the All transforms...now try exporting and repeat. see if that fits that axis error.
Hi, for anyone still struggling with this: what worked for me was re-importing the groom asset and, in the menu that shows up at 17:12, changing the rotation values until it lined up with my avatar. In my case, every time I would bind, the hair would attach to my metahuman rotated at 90 degrees. I re-imported the groom asset and put -180 in the Z axis and that worked for me. Hope this helps!
Is it possible to bring this hair into the metahuman creator?
Sadly not, would have been a nice feature though!
your email appears in the video for 1 second, while you were working on quixel. try to fix the editing.
your videos are the best, keep posting more about unreal engine 5. ✌
Thank you 🙏 Found it thanks again for the heads up. ✊
@@promptmuse Could you help me with one thing, I'm having problems with folds in clothes and it's stopping me when making my model in Blender. Could you make a video about folds in clouthes?
I've already tried reading some files but I still haven't been able to reproduce this on the mesh.
I would appreciate it if you could help me.😁
7:43 as of Blender 4.1.1, "Use Sculpt Collision" does not work properly on real scale model. This is a known issue (#115843), hope it'll be fixed soon.
In Unreal Engine hair have offset to right (2-5 mm). How to fix it?
Fixed by import with Scale -1, 1, 1
Everything is awesome - just Unreal 5.3 imports the */abc file as a static mesh... W=hat can I do ?
Hey, in UE in Settings>plugins just ensure you have Groom Importer plugin enabled. Then restart UE. Does that resolve your issue? 🙏
Oh, if that doesn’t work. Go back to the 16:00 min mark in the video. As I recall these steps have to be exact otherwise it will be important as a mesh 🤞
@@promptmuse exactly i did this several times and i applied before my only one scalp - selected .. And finally it imports as a mesh.. :(
it imports not the groom - it imports "alembic cach import options" instead of "groom import options"...
I deleted eveyrthing, just left the scalp - also imports "alembic" in Unreal as a static mesh...
i dont have any tools for hair in my assets browser((( does anyone have this problem version 4.0??
Change path of asset library to this: ***\Blender 4.0\4.0\datafiles\assets\
metahuman lighting is supported by windows. do you know how to make it work on mac?
I’m sorry im not really familiar with Mac settings at all, but as far as my limited knowledge goes it does run on Mac and I does the lighting (Had some friends produce a movie on a Mac using MH and the UE lighting)
@@promptmuse al the tutorials I find are for windows. I can't find how to make it work on mac...
My asset browser is completely empty. Where do I find those Hair geo nodes?
Change path of asset library to this: ***\Blender 4.0\4.0\datafiles\assets\
This will show you hairs
@@d.pereladov thank you. Resolved by upgrading from 4.0 to 4.1
When I change the number on "Distance To Hair Guides" nothing changes, I get the same result for when I select the scalp as my surface, as your hair got thicker when you did those two things... Everything else works fine until I get to this part.
Also when I set the Density to be anything over 20.000, I suddenly have SUPER THICK worm-like strands randomly placed on the head, at least 2 or 3 of those in random spots, and then the rest of the hair still stays the same. (Please helppp)
I have the same issue. Did you find a solution?
@@lemming77gode Sadly no, if only lol.
Is there a way to add custom Blender clothing to metahuman?
There is , I would like to show it 👍
@@promptmuse Thank you, looking forward to see it.
I've just followed this tut again, double checked plugins, it just wont import with alembic importer now in UE5. Driving me crazy! Anyone else getting this?
Hey do you have them alembic groom plugin installed ? In UE go to settings> plugins > search alembic groom and check and restart to install
Made a quick vid just to show this in more detail www.patreon.com/posts/supplementary-97824272?Link&
@promptmuse Yes, I do have those activated. I found the problem. I missed one untick on the particle setting.
The only problem I'm struggling with is, when I import into ue5.3 the hair is not as thick, infact nowhere near as thick as it shows in blender and even though I feel I've styled it in blender, it's not the same in UE5.
It's not a complex hairstyle i'm doing. Just an elderly male swept back style no parting.
@@jonos138 hello I'm having the same problem which tile is causing the problem
Every time I try this and add curves in Blender, it'll be insanely long, even when set to 1m. Is there something in my settings that are off? Because I'm doing this step by step and not getting the same result hahaa 😪
Now you are right go less like 0.1 I don’t think I ever set my units to scale correctly for that project so just would go from 0.1. You can use the tools to make the hair longer and shorter afterwards so don’t worry if you don’t get the initial length you can always trim it !
@@promptmuse just tried that haha that worked yes!! 🙌🏽 I figured it had to do with units but i don’t see where to change them in preferences haha
@@ParisHolland 🙌
i found I need to install Groom Hair plugin or it fails...!
