The Black Redstart *CLOSE UP | WILDLIFE SINGAPORE BIRDING | 4K

The Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros) is a small and striking bird belonging to the Old World flycatcher family, Muscicapidae. Found across parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa, this adaptable bird is known for its distinctive plumage and habit of frequenting urban areas as well as natural habitats.
Adult male Black Redstarts have predominantly black plumage with contrasting orange-red patches on their tails, wings, and sides. They also feature a pale belly and undertail coverts. Females and juveniles have a browner coloration with less contrast in their plumage, often appearing more mottled.
Black Redstarts inhabit a variety of habitats, including rocky areas, cliffs, urban environments, and scrublands. They are often found foraging for insects on the ground or making short flights to catch flying prey. Their diet primarily consists of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
During the breeding season, male Black Redstarts may engage in territorial displays, which involve singing from prominent perches and performing aerial flights to defend their territory. Nests are typically constructed in crevices, holes, or cavities in buildings, walls, or rock faces, where the female lays eggs and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties.
While the Black Redstart is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation, particularly in urban areas where nesting sites are scarce. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and providing suitable nesting sites, as well as managing urban environments to accommodate this species, are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this charismatic bird.
