A lovely song. A great variety of tunes made the UK charts in the 1970s, which made them fun. Thank you

This is from a short-lived TV show called "2Gs and the Pop People" which was a vehicle for choreographer Dougie Squires' TV dance troupe The Second Generation (His earlier troupe, The Young Generation, were exclusive to the BBC but 2Gs was made for ITV (commercial television)). Six editions were made and featured guests such as Slade, Lulu, Scott Walker, The Move and ELO. The dancers would feature heavily with the guests; on one of Slade's songs, each member of the band has a girl dressed in a similar outfit dancing next to them! When this was made, Gilbert was transitioning from his earlier "street urchin" look (seen here) to something less quirky. On the other two songs he performed in this episode (Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day and January Git), he's wearing his new look sweater with a big "G" on the front. He's still growing his hair out though and was soon sporting a longer look.

Easily one of the finest British songwriters of his generation. 'Nothing Rhymed' is a poignant masterpiece, 'Claire' is beautiful, 'Alone Again,' tugs at your heart, and 'Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day' just makes you feel glad to be alive. A maverick, a genius and a national treasure. ☺

Pardon the gap in my knowledge, but I don't know if Gilbert O'Sullivan would/could be classed as British seeing as he was born two years before Ireland became a republic. I don't know if Irish people born prior to 1948 can still be classed as British. Being an Irish-Australian, I had always seen him as an Irish artist and not a British artist. However, I am not clear whether he could stand as British national treasure, or not.

Gilbert was around constantly in the early 70s and then had quite a comeback fairly recently. If you listen to all of his lyrics, he's quite a comedian. He has a similar way of looking at the world as one , Billy Connolly.
Class always rises to the top and you can't keep it down. He's still popular now.

A very clever songwriter, always with a line that can make you laugh or cry - aside from this one and 'Alone Again Naturally' which you know, I'd always recommend 'Nothing Rhymed', and 'Clair'...and also one that was less of a hit which I love called 'We Will' which managed to be funny and touch your heart too!!

Gilbert's ''Claire'' and ''Get Down'' were two of my favourite songs when I was a little girl. I recommend that you, Cynthia, listen to Alone Again Naturally. You might know it and not realise it. GOS's music played in my home during the early 70's. That soon changed when Hayley and I took over the record player, and filled the house with Skyhooks (''Smut''), Supernaut (''I Like It Both Ways'', ''Lick My Lolly''), Elton Motello (''Jet Boy Jet Girl''), Boney M, Bee Gees, Adam And The Ants, Edith Bliss...
I am from a Catholic family. My mother always scolded me when I used words like ''hell''. However, they thought that we might as well lap up the filth that the pop market in Australia was willing to feed us little Vegemites.
I'm happy to hear my username called out. However, I didn't make this request. I was instructing somebody in the comments on how to make a request, seeing as that person was describing the video that he/she wanted you to see, and not giving title/name/channel name (which has proven to be a success method). You still didn't watch the right video, but who cares.. That's the other guy's problem.

@@mightyV444 Ha, ha - I agree. I thought the cloth-capped look was cute. Personally, if I asked for a particular video to be viewed for whatever reason, I would be disappointed if that video didn't come to pass. I've been watching other ''reaction'' channels, and am seeing ways that people are making requests. Some people are just too casual with their requests: ''Please react to a live clip of The Cure doing Love Cats - it's somewhere on youtube - just look for it. Robert Smith is wearing a cowboy hat, and it's real funny. Check out that one! Just look for it on youtube'', or ''I suggest you react to Queen performing Radio Ga Ga live in the mid 80's. Freddie Mercury does this cool dance. It's so cool. Just scroll through thousands of videos of that description until you find the one with Freddie doing this cool dance. I just want you to see his cool dance for my own enjoyment more than yours''.
What kind of request is that?
I noticed people posting links or using this song title/artist name/channel name method.
I'm a little dubious about sending the Haniers an email with recommendations.

I just had a comparison video idea. Would you like to compare a 1950's Italian pop song to a 1980's Australian version of the same song?
There was a band I really liked back in the 80's called The Globos. They had a couple of hits in Australia, and were big on the live Cabaret scene.
Sadly, The Globos lead vocalist, Wendy De Waal, passed away last year. Her musical partner, Mark Trevorrow, would have a popular comedy stage act in Australia called Bob Downe.
I think you should make a VS video for the following:
Mina - Tintarella di Lina (1959) Vs. Globos - Tintarella di Luna (1982).
Should come as no surprise that Hayley and I were in the audience to see this crazy performance go off in the Countdown studio. It was a lot of fun.
    Sources are below:
Mina - Tintarella di luna (1959) Dario Mister due note
    GLOBOS Tintarella Di Luna daveinprogress3
I would also like to suggest a comparison video of Split Enz vs. Jo Kennedy.
Split Enz released a single in 1979 titled ''She's Got Body, She's Got Soul''. The song was a flop. A few years later, singer and actress, Jo Kennedy, would record the song for a movie she starred in called ''Starstruck''. Hayley and I loved ''Starstruck'' at the time. It was an Australian New Wave rock/pop musical. Jo Kennedy's version became a hit in Australia.
The Split Enz clip was taken from Countdown in 1979. Although we (Hayley and I) had thought it was Hayley at the front of the stage clapping, Mum confirmed over the Easter break that it was me that can be seen clapping at the front of the stage. Halyely is not in site! Please let the entire Split Enz Countdown clip playout - including the powersaving intro and Tim Finn introducing the show after the band perform the song. There's a bit of a funny moment where I try to grab Tim Finn's hand, and he backs away with a ''excuse me, dear!''. All the lights were turned off in the studio, and we stood in the dark until we were instructed to run to the stage. A smoke machine was there to blind us for a second. It's a fun watch.
The Jo Kennedy clip is taken from the movie ''Starstruck''.
