The fencing scene was the very last thing filmed, as Mandy Patinkin (Inigo) and Cary Elwes (Wesley) had to spend several weeks in between other scenes perfecting their swordplay. Except for the gymnastic flip, every shot of them fighting is the actual actors. Incidentally, when they reel off a list of techniques that they're using to fight, these are all real swordfighting moves created/described by the real named historical experts. A pleasure to watch along as always, Biss!

The actor that played Wesley has explained that this movie was a failure in the theaters and he was having a hard time finding other acting jobs. One day he was going to auditions in New York and stopped in a diner for lunch. He ordered a hamburger and the waitress asked how he wanted it cooked. He answered "medium rare.". She smiled and said, "As you wish." This was how he learned that the movie was becoming very popular on video tape

The whole cast really enjoyed doing it - They get together on occasion at conventions etc. Cary (Westley) Elwes wrote a book called "As You Wish" about the making of it, with contributions by the cast and film makers. Its a really good read.

Robin Write (Buttercup) tells a really wholesome story about Andre the Giant. She says the crew went horseback riding when they had a break from filming, and got caught in freezing rain on the way back. She says Andre looked over and saw her shivering, and he rested his enormous hand on her head like a hat. She says it both kept the rain off and warmed her up surprisingly well, but it also made her feel safe and protected. She says he was always sweet like that.

You're absolutely right about it following the fairy tale tropes, especially the rule of 3...
3 dangers in the Fire Swamp
3 villains in Vinzini's crew, hence 3 obstacles to saving Buttercup... that being Agility, Strength, and Intelligence (or Stamina actually).
    3 syllables in Vinzini's name.
3 words uttered by Wesley (As You Wish)
3 Dread Pirate Roberts in Wesley's story (himself, his captor, and his captor's captor)
    3 syllables in Buttercup's name
    3 syllables in Humperdink
    "Pit of despair"
    Humperdink's schedule:
    - 500th anniversary
    - wife's murder
    - war to start
    3 ultimatums to Count Rogan.
    30 troops guarding the castle.

The grandfather was played by Peter Falk, who is most famous for starring as 'Columbo', a police detective, in a TV show that was very popular back in the 1970s (from 71 to 78) - so popular that even after the show was technically canceled, they brought him back to reprise the role in multiple TV specials after that, all the way up to 2003. … The man was so good, he got to play that character for 32 years!

And folks I’m here to tell you: intelligence, education, & wisdom are NOT the same thing!

It was NOT "what" Westley said to Buttercup; it was "the way" he said it. Of course, YOU can SEE who The Man in Black really is, but Grandson cannot SEE this fact -- Grandfather is only READING THE BOOK TO THE BOY. The wonder of the brain to envision written literature into a "fleshed out" tale. No volcano, but why did you think they named the place The FIRE Swamp?! "I'm captivated!" BissFlix sez!

I’m glad you enjoyed this movie, it’s an all-time favorite of mine and my family - we can quote just about every line 😄 if you’re interested, Cary Elwes (the man in black) wrote a book a few years ago about the making of the movie and its lasting impact on fans and the cast/crew alike. It’s called, of course, As You Wish, and it’s an absolute delight to read.
There’s a more recent movie called “Stardust” that actually manages to capture some of the magic that this movie does, I think you’d enjoy it as well!
