Thank you for the video. With Indicator being one of my favourite labels I look forward to more of these monthly videos. From the period, I’m more into Noir myself but as my husband likes Marlene Dietrich, I’ll pick up The Lady is Willing’ for him.
I'll try to keep this from turning into an essay! First I am a fan of Fred Astaire! "Swing Time is brilliant! I don't watch his movies for the plots and wouldn't argue with anyone that they are contrived and ridiculous The mood, the music and yikes the dancing are genius! I have two left feet, by the way. But as I'm stuck for space and this is not one of his best I will probably give this a miss! Big fan of Irene Dunne and Sylvia Sydney! I recently watched Sylvia in "You'll Only live Twice" and "Fury" from the great Fritz Lang! I am intrigued by the Marlene Dietrich movie and have most of her work with Von Sternberg and absolutely love my latest discovery of Desire" 1936 with Gary Cooper! They never looked more beautiful. Rita Hayworth was a heady concoction of Irish/Spanish descent! Thanks again! Ps this is the shortened version haha 😄!
Great work Dermot on your shortened version. The Dietrich is weird but immensely enjoyable as everyone is in a fast talking comedy except the goddess but then it gets serious. Her hats are worth the price of admission.
@@leocoh89 I would like to check out "The Lady is Willing" . I like Marlene despite all of the surrounding controversies! Mc Murray is a little dull but I can't deny he has appeared in some incredible movies ie Double Indemnity, The Apartment, The Caine Mutiny, Pushover with the beautiful Kim Novak etc etc etc!
@dermotfont-wk8gm you can easily make the argument that dietrich's leading men are fairly wooden, especially in the von sternberg films. She even had to put up with John Wayne's charisma, haha. No offence if you're a huge John Wayne fan.
Obviously he has starred in some great movies like Rio Bravo, The Searchers, Red River etc! He is not a great actor and I absolutely hate his political views and social views on ethnicity! Watched 'Trumbo" Bryan Cranston recently and he really disgraced himself during the McCarthyite witchunt years!
Hi Ronin. Good reviews of all and they all look like titles worth picking up (at a sale perhaps), even the clunker haha as I do enjoy Astaire a lot. Director Sidney Langfield not a name that sprung to mind and yet just 2 years before the Astaire film I see he directed the fantastic The Hound of the Baskervilles, plus he also directed a handful of Bob Hope movies I’ve enjoyed.
@@neilsmoviechannel3199 thanks Neil. They all have their worth. Yes I noticed Baskervilles in his credits. Astaire’s version of marching is pretty interesting.
I don’t think I’d buy any of these outside a sale, in any event. I do like Dietrich, not so much McMurray. When Tomorrow Comes might be my favourite from your descriptions here. I don’t have cash for films that I’d really like, so I wouldn’t go seeking out these if I’m in the market for Deaf Crocodile releases!
@richardking3206 thanks Richard. For physical media 'dying ', there's a lot of it about. It doesn't look like it but I'm trying to be smarter. Emphasis on trying.
@@leocoh89 Me too. I work from the premise of not being able to get everything I’d like, so if I don’t really fancy something it’s out before I start. Once in a while I get something that I hadn’t planned to get (because of an offer, or whatever). I mostly spend more than I should on media, whatever. If media is dying, it’s not because of me, whatever!
Well, Ronin, this works out well. I already own the Kino Lorber "You and Me," and I've got the Astaire affair which you dislike so much, in a 20 musical dvd collection, so only your two favorites, from this review, will be on my Indicator Buy List, and I'll wait, as you suggest, 'til the price comes down. Thanks for the review, I really needed it; I'd dance about my room, with delight, 🕺but I can tell that it would simply annoy you. So, I'll just wish you a happy Autumn.
I've not seen any of these, but ironically the one that most excites my curiosity is 'You'll Never Get Rich', as I am partial to musicals, and while no particularly great Astaire fan, I still have to concede he was one of the finest dancers in Hollywood history.
Hi Ronin - I don't know any of these but I am a Fritz Lang fan, so I might check that one out. Thanks for the video.
@benvanasse3397 thanks for watching. It's a lesser lang but has lots of wonderful flourishes.

@modestyblaise4167 thanks modesty. Dietrich is wonderful is this one. It's a fairly zany setup.

@skellys1948 Thanks, Stephen. I mean, if your thing is dancing around, a room with Rita hayworth then fair enough. Happy fall, so to speak sir.
Good honest review. I love the covers on the Indicator releases, even if occasionally the films are clunkers.
@steve4films Thanks, Steve. There's something satisfying about holding an indicator in your hand. The boxsets especially are beautiful.

@barrymoore4470 Thanks, Barry. Astaire does have a unique way of marching in the film, though, haha.
