❤ You know there are so many RUclipsrs wanting to quit because they are trying to keep up with a post schedule and cater to the algorithm... And here you are just posting when you can and dropping advice and knowledge in your own style... And we are still here and will always be here to watch and learn whenever you got time man. ❤ Cant wait for the new book, still practicing in your old workbook❤
Thank you Alphonso! You have such a calm, positive approach that makes me want to draw everyday. To all viewers: I you haven't yet bought his 2 books, they are the first step to helping you understand how to draw better. The workbook helps you see how you are improving rapidly.
Such a great point at 6:45 . That isn't usually clarified to beginners. Without that knowledge its easy to become demotivated or hit a roadblock when they try to advance too far forward.
I took up drawing, something I always have wanted to do, during the isolation of the pandemic. Then I fell in love with watercolors which I have pursued for the last 2 years. I've been improving slowly, but I decided that I really needed to go back to basics. What is more basic than drawing? I have therefore come to the master. I have your 2 books and am looking forward to progressing with those and your videos. Thank you so much for all the time and work you put into your invaluable instruction.
Thank you so much❤ it's the first time someone is actually telling me why i have to focus on basic forms, now i finally understand and i'll be able to enjoy it. Thank you again
this video couldn't have come at a better time for me, thank you so much! your wisdom is always very comforting. i felt like i hit a wall a long time ago, even though i hadn't stopped studying (perspective, in this case). i was so frustrated... "i should know this, by now! i spent all year on it!" i spent all year covering 1, 2, and 3-point perspective... i figured that as long as i kept the pace with the books i have, i'd get it down sooner rather than later. ironically, in times of frustration, i'd rush through the parts i struggled to understand. ("yeah, yeah, i get the gist... but i gotta finish the book ASAP, i'll figure the rest out as i go") now i understand that that's sort of like trying to sit on a piece of furniture that you only partially assembled. a weak, hastily-built foundation can only support you for so long before it falls out from underneath you. haha, you're making me want to go study! i'll be ready for 2-point when i know 1-point like the back of my hand. thanks again for sharing your time & knowledge; to wayward art students who lack the funds for a professional hand to to guide them, it's priceless 💜
I've been subscribed to your channel for some years but I haven't watched a video of yours in a long time, I'm so glad I took the time to watch this, your teaching is great!
Going back to basic and solving the core issue is something you have constantly reminded us. Thank you for this video again. Was expecting your book this time 😊
This is great advice , i been drawing for years on and off and mostly from imagination and my drawings suck ass , recently i started from the basis and my drawings had been improving a lot more tho slowly and thats the way , i think. I guess that for all the people who like to draw we all wanna go directly to a subject , like drawing the human body or houses and so on but we miss the fundamentals and then we get frustrated and may quit or never improve , take time , build a solid foundation and think about what u wanna draw and how many things u need to get there and slowly build your techniques to get to your eand goal. I love your channel men , keep uploading even if u cant do it regularly.
I've drawn for almost all of my nearly six decades above ground. There are still times when I will use multiple single LED's and a manikin to determine how light and shadows will affect my characters. The simple manikin can teach you many things regardless of your level of artistic skills.
I have been struggling with perspective lately and constantly trying to push myself too far and being dissatisfied with the results. Your video reminded me that there is no shame in being a beginner at something and I need to take a step back and remind myself how to draw shapes in space. Sometimes there is more value in taking it back to the basics. Thanks for the insight 🤗
I see you're using a PN pen! I recently switched to PN's and find them much easier to use than the #005/1/2/3 microns and the PN can produce all those line weights too! Also more durable on any paper, textured or not! Love your lessons and waiting for book 3
Agreed. Your videos inspire me endlessly, I got your books just because I loved your videos! When I started drawing, I focused on the fundamentals (cube, sphere, ellipse, etc) and my understanding is so much deeper. Your contour lines and hatching vidoes were also huge helps in deepening my understanding of the 3d!
I just found your channel recently and am going through all the videos slowly … thanks so much, the best introduction to pen&ink drawing I have seen. Also just bought your books and am looking forward to the third one :-); I hope you continue to post new content regularly!
I still apply to the school of thought that artists should mainly draw what they want, since it gets them going. But with that said, I also agree that understanding and practicing fundamentals can and will better what you want to do. It's like eating your veggies. Gotta do it every so often.
Same for building speed and efficacy in guitar playing. And weight lifting with small or light weights with fully traced out motions is better than heavy lifting that has not that range.
My personal issue is that I started late in my mid thirties (two years ago) and I feel like I won't be able to achieve what I want if I don't "hurry." I'd like to draw my own comics eventually and my progress has been very slow. I've been trying to slow myself down but it's almost a panic when I draw and a constant battle. Thanks for the video!
You are just a youngster! I am approaching 80 and only learned to draw a few years ago. Take time to enjoy your art journey and you may have more years than you ever dreamed of - stressing will get you nowhere!
This might seem like an out of the topic question but I really want to know how you record your traditional drawings. I tend to struggle a lot with it it would help if you ever consider making a video on how you record your traditional drawing. Other than I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
Yes it’s very inspiring to watch famous illustrators like Kim Junggi pick up a pen and just create magic from scratch, but even he was adamant that his visual library came from countless hours of observation and practice before he could draw some things without a reference. That being said, I think it’s a good idea to try drawing from imagination once in a while, especially if your goal is to develop that mental library so you can draw from imagination in the future. It’s something that needs to be a specific goal you set out to achieve, unless you are happy to only draw from reference. I don’t think it’s ever really possible to stop needing references though. You can’t memorize everything. There will always be something that will need some prior research.
Just bought both books and working on them now, great instruction! Good advice here as well, take your time guys your journey is uniquely yours and one you will look back on in the future! Also Mr. Dunn, would you consider publishing a watercolor book or teaching an online course about it in the future? That’s the medium I’m moving to soon. Thx!
Yeah i dont know. Its just you have to have a creative mind to begin with in other for this fundementals to truly work in your favor. If you want to draw cool manga characters for example. Knowing the building blocks of the human body, heck even knowing the anatomy wont matter if you dont have a feeling for what people consider "cool" or "epic" learning to be creative is a whole other ball game then learning the fundementals of art.
Usually the opposite. Not going fast enough to get the whole thing in action and begin to spot the patterns. But even more so usually lacking both. A really super slow down and pausing on the smallest discernible element combined with fast work flow type activity What do master artists tell us to do ? Do thousands of quick sketches. You shouldn't be doing those slowly. The slow part is when you first study the thing you plan to sketch. The specific geometry of the tip of your drawing implement.
Ok I'll rewatch this video often because I'm so angry at how slow I improve -_- It's so frustrating when you know exactly what you want to draw, but you can't reflect it on paper for the life of you😓
Thank you for sharing your insights, Alphonso. Your sketches gave me some further ideas for my daily routine, which is surprising, because your books brimming with inspiration already. Enjoy your day. Looking forward to the next book. 👋🏼
Hi Alphonso, thank you so much for this inspirational video! 💜🙏🏻 any tips on perspective on human poses? I'm currently struggling on drawing in different point of views whether from below or upper view
Just wanted so thank you Alphonso for your inspiration and free videos; I just bought your book pen&ink drawing and it’s a great book, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn to draw (better)!
Thank you, Alphonso. You are a genius teacher and it is wonderful to watch you drawing. Your advice is always pertinent and your examples fun and doable! Lovely stuff!
Thank you Alphonso that was extremely insightful and much needed. I think youtube is oversaturated with art tutorials and this type of content is really a breath of fresh air.
Man you’re good, thank you for posting these videos, I’ve almost been through the entire figure drawing playlist since I started watching just a few days ago, the concepts you teach and the things you said in those videos have helped me so much in understanding how everything just builds on top of each other. You are doing great things and I appreciate you. Subscribed
Perhaps it can help to set goals, so that way you achieving the goal or some progress towards it is what you seek. When you switch from subject to the other, what usually causes that switch?
I bought the first two books and wow did my drawings improve, can't wait for book number. 3 I have learned so much from your channel it's amazing. the way you simplify things I can actually understand how to put it down on paper. thank you very much and please keep posting up how to drawings, I appreciate trying to draw with you (at a much slower rate that is)
I've spent 2 years learning fundamentals and ended up being worse than all my peers and hating myself for it. Please, draw what you like kids. Now I'm going to **** myself
Sadly Talent is a factor. But these people wont tell you that. Ofc you will enjoy the learning process when you actually learn and do it fast. 😅 Its like when he sade "growth will come at the right time" like, get out of here with than Zen bullshit. 😂
You have a bad understanding of perspective 8:11. i feel you should hold yourself to a higher standard for understanding perspective, and when you go off "feeling" you build incorrect preconceptions. this comment is just to balance out all of the good comments you got.😉
Slow is smooth, smooth is fast
agreed
That's what she said. 😉
Thats what he said about what she said

@@alphonsodunn I love it❣️
Ya know it's great advice...when it actually applies to learning ANYTHING...

Needed to hear this. I was getting lost in thinking I wasn't making progress
Sometimes the progress is cerebral before it is mechanical.
Thanks, Alphonso!
Excellent advice, we seem to rush nowadays instead of taking our time and doing it correctly
Such a great point at 6:45 . That isn't usually clarified to beginners. Without that knowledge its easy to become demotivated or hit a roadblock when they try to advance too far forward.

I find myself returning to fundamentals and basics regularly, it has become part of my drawing life.
It should be a constant practice. It is perpetually a part of mine
