Hi my name is Emi. I'm born in raise in small town just outside Quebec City, this is where my lovely accent come from. My #vanlife story starts in September 2018. After a long-term relationship that I was trying for more than a year to rebuild, I decided it was time to end this toxic relationship once for all. This is where I decided to move away from this man that I was still in love with. I put all my belongings inside my SUV (GMC Jimmy) and moved six hours from where I was living. I didn’t know where I would sleep, didn’t know where I would work but I knew I needed to make a drastic move. At that time, I told myself I will only sleep in my car for a month while looking for a place to rent. What I didn’t know is that one month became another month and another month. In the end, I end up sleeping in my car for a full year. Even if people will consider this the lowers time of my life, this experience was the best thing I couldn’t have done with my life. I took that year to focus on myself, decide what I wanted, and most importantly what I didn’t want. That year made me also realize that for so long, I was chasing the wrong dreams. I was chasing what society wanted me to be: to have a big house, a steady job, kids, get married… None of those dreams was making me happy. In September 2019, while I was actively looking for a van, I received a phone call that someone had found my cat (Kelly). After, trying for hours with no success to communicate with my ex-boyfriend (who was taking care of her), I decided to drive the six hours to go pick her up. Without going into too much detail, it turns out he wasn’t able to take care of her anymore. So I brought her in a cat kennel for a couple of days until I found a van we both could live in. I put all the savings that I had accumulated while living in my car and bought my van (a 2011 Ford Econoline that I end up adding a hightop) In the beginning, It wasn’t so glamour. My cat and I were sleeping on a mattress on the floor of the van. We both had to adjust. Now, my cat loves this lifestyle as much as I do; she looks at the window while I’m driving and she loves exploring new places. Since then, my cat Kelly and I are have been living full-time in my self convert van.

Your energy is so good that kitty trusts you. This is likely why she is so comfortable with you in your van lifestyle. I must caution you again that no matter how diligent a cat owner is, it is inevitable that a door will be accidentally left open and kitty gets out. Suggest putting a gps tacker device on kitty. Take care🥰

Max loves traveling in the van. But he gets seriously aggressive if I try to get a collar on him. He's too big to lay on the dash. No matter how much he tried to flatten out. He would slide off like a pancake lol now he likes to sit looking out the back window.
Do you ever worry about getting in an accident with Kelly loose? I was rear ended while stopped, yesterday. Minimal damage and Max wasn't with me, thankfully. The other driver had a small dog that slammed into the window, though. There was no blood but it was yelping in pain. It really made me rethink how I will travel with Max. Wondering if you have any thoughts on this.
Congrats on 3 full years living with Kelly in the van. She's such a precious little thing 🤗❤️🐈⚔️🔥🐴

Maybe since familiar smells, she loves traveling in the van. Only jumped out of camper once…has never tried to escape since.

Dealing with hikers with dogs? Do cats like to eat or drink while traveling? Did you figure out why Kitty peed on your comforter one time? Keep those videos coming!

I travel full-time with a small dog, 17-years-old cat, and a new tiny blind kitten found in the woods. Your advice is exactly right. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience especially about the cat escaping. Cats are lightening quick when necessary. It is amazing how wily they are and how quickly they can escape through very small openings. 😻

Kelly is such a great kitty. I travel in my minivan with my 2cats 3 dogs & a few pet rats 🐀. I used to have a litter box but they stopped using it. When I'd stop & take the dogs out to potty they would come out too & go potty. So that's our routine now. I couldn't imagine traveling w/o them.

I have 3 cats now. The male cat won't be a problem. He's been in a car and does great. One of the females is very timid so she may be a challenge. I've only had the other female cat for a short time but she didn't make much of a fuss when I brought her home. The biggest issue right now is that the older cats still hissing at the newest one. The 2 females are somewhat hostile to each other. I'm hoping when I get the newest one fixed, it will get better. I'm not ready to move in a van so I've got time.

She looks like my kitty except he's orange. Same white fur on the chin! I live in a box truck, so all this information is helpful. I just got him from my husband's friend he's about 1-2 years old. He's okay in here but he is always looking to expand his territory. I'm staying at my mom's house for a few weeks while she's out of town so he has a little more space. I'm going to build a catwalk. So he can climb, and has play space. He has a cat tree that fits in my shower area. I'm hoping he doesn't get claustrophobic. He loves the dashboard as well, and I will probably make him a hammock for the passenger side window. Thank you for the videos!

Thanks for all the great tips Emi, Kelly is the ultimate travel companion❣I love how her colors have deepened and changed with age 🥰 I will say to you and anybody else who is considering taking their cat outside or on the road with them, that it is much better if you have a harness instead of a collar. Cats can slip out of their collar at any time but that shouldn't happen with a harness and it's much more comfortable for the cat because it's not pulling on their neck. Happy travels 😁🐈👍🐈‍⬛💗🐱🚐😺

I adopted two eight week old kittens. I got some advice from other cat owners to start as early as possible with automobile rides. I frequently do a three hour drive between my home and 2nd home. They've been on the road this way a few times now. At first it was a cry-a-thon but now it is much better. I travel with them in a soft carrier and I also have my dog. Normally I don't stop unless I need to use a rest stop. I think 3 hours is about the limit because with car travel I don't have a cat box or an easy way to feed them and give them water. They aren't afraid of the soft carrier and will play with it if I leave it on the floor. It wouldn't be safe for them to be loose in my car.

It's a lovely cat 🐾🐾, but in Sweden it's not allowed to have the animals unleashed in the car. If there is an accident the animal can be thrown through the windshield, or at the driver, in the worst scenario. The animal can also break its neck, even if it is in a cage - but less risk in any case.
I had my little dog in a special belt, which was attached to the normal car belt. My and my daughter's cat, Zorro, threw up in the car - constantly, so he just went along to the vet, once every/second month (diabetes)
My dog just Loved to sit in the passanger seat, looked and grunted at other motorists...like she knew the rules of the road
