    Hi Carl. I've run into an interesting problem with my reassembly. After replacing the bearings top and bottom and cleaning everything up pretty well I put it back together. I put grease on the cogs but didn't fill the case yet. Ran it very briefly in first and second and it was fine, so I refilled it with grease and ran it in first and second, and then, with the motor off, I shifted it into third. It was stiff shifting, but it went in. When I turned it on it made a bad clunk, and I turned it off at once. It had shoved one of the smaller shafts straight up forcefully enough to break the transmission case cover. (I ordered a new cover and it should be in early next week.) So I disassembled it all, and took the center shaft out and cleaned it extremely carefully, reasoning that the shifting collar could be sticking somehow. Cleaned out the case, removed and wiped off the other two shafts, and reassembled again (no grease this time). I spun it through the gears manually turning the motor, and first and second are OK, if a little noisy, but when I get to third it does exert some vertical force, but I would say nothing like the event that broke things. It does shift readily now. It seems like the gears are trying to climb apart. I just don't understand it.
    Any idea what's going on? And thank you for your time and thoughts.

    Hello!
    I have the same machine and have been using it for 6 years, only having to use it a few times a year.
    Last time I finished, cleaned her and left her in full combat readiness.
    After a few months, I had to use it for pizza dough and I was surprised to find that the electric motor was working, but the shaft on which the attachments are attached to the mixer was not turning.
    I can literally grip the shaft while the motor is on?!?
    Could you advise me what to expect and where to go to find the problem?
    Huge thanks in advance!
    Greetings!

    Mr. Fesser, Thank you for the great video. I have a 'diving gear' A120 mixer and will keep it in service as long as possible. Grease in transmission and transmission seem to be in good shape. However, a motor insulation chewing critter moved into it over winter. :{ There is a motor (rotor) bearing in the rear cover. A: can the rotor and shaft be pulled out still connected to the worm gear within the transmission or is the worm gear and front motor bearing not going to budge without transmission dissasembly? B: Can the rear housing be coaxed off of the motor (rotor) bearing and later reassembled? or am I doomed to a trasmission dissasembly so that rotor and rear housing can be removed. --Ben

    • @carlfesser6673
      @carlfesser6673  2 года назад

      I haven't pulled the rear cap on mine, but I suspect that is a good bet from the Hobart diagrams showing the bearing rides in the rear cover that you'll be able to work it that way.
      Your assumptions that anything from the front requires a transmission teardown is correct. Motor shaft loads through the bearing into the worm gear, which is as inaccessible as it looks in the video.
      Good luck! Hope it only got insulation and nothing important.

    • @carlfesser6673
      @carlfesser6673  2 года назад

      Just occurred to me I may have answered wrong, because I was just thinking of blowing the housing out. Getting the motor out is definitely a teardown to get the worm gear off, unfortunately.

    • @carlfesser6673
      @carlfesser6673  3 года назад +1

      Hi John,
      If yours is as bad as mine was, it's probably going to give you more trouble from the frozen grease than the hardware. A heat gun helps there.
      That said, the acorn nut and jam nut is tricky if you don't have a low profile wrench or service wrench available for the jam nut, because attempting to spin just one without bracing the other just rotates the whole set.
      Once you get those two off, the drip ring is held by spring loaded ball bearings. The planetary itself just pulls straight down on the center shaft, but I had to coax it with some prying.
      Hope that helps!

      I have no experience with the D340, but if it's similar to some of the other Hobarts your largest gear on the center shaft may have a bevel gear immediately under it. If those two are inserted upside down I believe it could cause the problem you're describing. Just a guess though.

      If you can hold it with your hand, there are a few things that you need to check: balance the transmission, If it's too tight on the bottom or too tight on top, that would cause it to have issues with gears not latching. The yoke (if you take out the gear handle, the piece with the 4 screws, the piece should be flat both bottom and top you do not want a big groove in it. The springs on the top gear with the pins might have broken down and causing it not to latch, the older styles had a key with a rounded side that latched the gear, the spring might have broken.

    Thank you Carl for the video, We have a A200 Hobart (5786 - 1 were your shows 5786-2) we found out that the motor would keep stopping and kicking on the reset. So i took it to an electrical company the whole thing and they said it was the reset switch so I Drove an hour away to order my 39$ part installed and still the same. So i took the whole thing to another person who does electrical and it was the relay switch that in total cost me $300 and i got it back and it worked but then something happened. The gear on the transmission shaft broke so i ordered one on line and $350 later i get it. The video that i recorded on my phone someone stole my phone and now i put the A200 together but the planetary does not turn. It seems to me that the bearings on the centre shaft stops it from turning, will be looking around for something this weekend when im in town. Its been apart and not working since march of this year. Would really like it to go again i MISS IT.

      Even with the 3 bolt puller mine was the opposite, with the left coming up first. I used a plastic bladed putty knife and some taps from my palm to nudge the reluctant side along so I wouldn't score anything.
      A lot of *tap tap tap* *turn screw to take up new slack* repeated until it squelched free.

    • @carlfesser6673
      @carlfesser6673  4 года назад

      In my case I had jam nuts on that shaft, so I just needed a skinny and regular wrench. My center shaft lock nut was a bear though, so I commiserate with you. I had to hold that one with a wrench across the lower planetary to the acorn/jam nut combo to hold the shaft.
      In theory you could use the same maneuver to fix the transmission in place, but I don't know if all the keys would hold up to that much gear reduction. Mine was an all steel lock nut, so I'd be liberal with PB Blaster or Kroil first.

      I guess the first question would be to confirm you've removed all of the planetary already? I assume so, but sometimes it's the obvious things.
      Other than that, since you said there's a broken shaft, any damage to the keyway or something similar that would hang up on the seals on its way through?

      Don't think pictures can be posted in comments. If you weren't able to find the spacer and key after the rest of the planetary fell off I'd guess the key in particular may be what's getting in the way. It's a very long key, and nothing else actually fits into the shaft beneath the oil seal, which is under the bearing.

    • @carlfesser6673

      Hi Mark, I picked up SuperLube for mine. The old service manual says 2lbs of food grade NLGI 1 for the transmission and just enough NLGI 2 to fill all the voids in the planetary.
      One caution on the grease if you're not tearing down and starting clean is that different bases don't always mix well, and I don't think the Super Lube is the same base material they'd have used back in the day.
      It was a little work finding NLGI 1, seems like most places stock just 2.

    • @markhull9156
      @markhull9156 3 года назад

      @@carlfesser6673 Thank you, Carl. I ended up getting almost all the old grease out and decided to use a Lucas EP lithium based "Red n Tacky" I got at Lowe's. It looked to be similar to the one shown in another video that was published by Hobart (ruclips.net/video/ceQE8PEYPPI/видео.html) which you're probably familiar with. (Why they should specify food grade in that part of the machine I cannot fathom. But in the planetary you should use a food grade lubricant - evidently about 2 ounces.)
      I'm a retired baker, but I won't use this mixer too hard. When it fell in my lap I assumed that it had major problems, but it's starting to look like replacing the three bearings on the top of the machine could put it straight. One gear shaft showed a definite wobble and I ordered OEM parts for the top three bearings. I really hope I don't have to dig out all that grease and work on the bottom end! Here's what I had before I opened it up: ruclips.net/video/ezKPmIKp53g/видео.html
