A couple of hints that might help someone tearing down their A200. 1. If you reassemble the mixer, and you hear a clunk every revolution of the planetary on speeds 2 and 3, loosen up the nut on the top of the main drive shaft outside the top cover. You should only tighten this nut until it just barely seats. Maybe even a bit looser. Wrenching it down will cause the clunking noise. It's a lock nut, so you don't have to tighten this down to keep it from coming off. You'll also get the clunk if you grease the planetary. It might take a minute or two for the clunk to go away once the grease spreads out. Once it's good, you shouldn't hear any noise. The mixer should run completely smooth. 2. I used a synthetic, automotive grease - NLGI #2 for the transmission. I bought this at my local auto parts store. This suggestion came from a restaurant service tech who works on these mixers. He advised staying away from red grease, and going with green or black. In his experience, the red breaks down, and leaks too quickly. This grease does not have to be food grade for proper functioning, although health laws might require it. I use my mixer at home, so health laws don't apply. The price difference between food grade grease (especially the Hobart part), and the automotive stuff was significant. For the planetary, you do have to use food grade grease. Again, NLGI #2. I used MobilGrease FM221. I bought it off of Ebay, as finding it locally was difficult. $20 for a 14 ounce tube. Tearing the transmission apart, as well as the planetary, and cleaning / greasing everything was a smart thing to do. Considering the cost of Hobart parts, and the number of gears, bearings and worm drives, regular maintenance makes tons of sense. 3. When you're using the screw to remove the top, inner cover to expose the transmission, it will lift the cover from the front first. Gently help the back to lift as well as you tighten the screw down. Allowing the front to come up first will cause the cover to lift out all of the shafts and gears, making it very difficult to see how it all goes together. 4. If the clutch comes apart in pieces, the springs adjacent to the rollers go on the side of the clutch assembly. The hollow side goes toward the housing, and the bulging out side goes toward the rollers. There's one spring for every roller, and it's easy for these springs to fall into the grease and disappear. Finally, take detailed pictures as you're removing things. The Hobart tech literature is not great, and it's hard to see how things go back together if you don't have pictures. Also, getting info out of Hobart is almost impossible. If you need a service tech, Hobart will not come to a home-based business. Try calling your local restaurant supply place, and get the name of an independent technician. Expect to pay for travel time, and two calls. One to tear down and diagnose, and the second to return after the tech gets the part. Most independent techs have a limited supply of parts. Again, thanks for this video.
Johnnie Holt I just replaced the main key in the gear box and I am getting a clicking sound in low gear. But the higher gears run smooth. Any thoughts to what might cause this?
I'm very impressed. I thought this was a particularly clear and well-done exposition of what a person needs to know if they should choose to dive into one of these. (Just remember his opening comment about this machine being prepped for the video.)
Frank Navarrette it sounds like you have a broken key in the transmission. The key usually breaks in half lengthwise. There is enough of a bite for the mixer to turn till you put it under a load. If you find a broken key you should change the grease and it would be a wise idea to change the shifter bushings. The bushings can wear causing a loss of speed.
my a200 mixer does not knead my dough...its weak. however it spins when there is no load when i press on button i hear a humming but the dough arm is too weak
rockgee it’s basically the same steps just on a bigger scale and more grease. A suggestion is to replace the shifter bushings before you reassemble the transmission. The bushings are brass and they can wear. If they wear then you could loose a speed. Good luck
Hello I have a question, and I think you can help, I have a Hobart A-120T it looks very similar to the A200 I want to remove the Gear change to lubricate the shaft .Can I take that out without removing any inner parts . and be able to slide the shaft back in .Thank You so much. John

This example has no gear oil at all. Mine is FULL of gear oil. Is this normal? Also I think I put the gears on wrong, but they fit perfectly, and it only has 2 speeds, REALLY REALLY slow and then fast....wtf??
Yes the transmission will be full of grease. You need to remove all of it before you make a repair. There are wearing brass parts that can leave small shavings in the grease. Check all the keys, and replace both shifter bushings. The bushings are brass which wears and can cause a loss of a speed.
hello I speak of Argentina have a machine like and want to rebuild, seeking a gear, is the first of the little that is coupled to the main drive, and is the first speed, I have to send to make, or come to replace? thank you for your help, or if you have so far, can you give me the specification of gear
Airplay Espresso and Bakery the Divin key? If that’s it the location is on the center shaft. The gear that rests in the shifting yolk is where it goes. You will see a spring loaded bar on the center shaft. The gear (has a hole in it ) ,and the divin key has a small nipple on it which rests in that hole. You need to put the pieces together while on the shaft pushing against the springy bar and pushing down at the same time. It’s a pain in the butt. If someone could show you that would make it way easier.
Hello, I'm trying to fix a A200 that leaks oily grease to the planetary after it's been unused for decades. I noticed the spacer the oilseal seals on has a neat groove around it just about where the seal should be. Is this wear or does it belong there ? And does anyone know where i can buy parts in west europe ? Many thanks !
The one I'm trying to fix at work isn't going into second speed when it's mixing dough. But it will without resistance. Why might that be and how should I fix it? Thanks for your thoughts.
Just had this one... The worm gear follower (The brass gear that meshes with the worm gear on the motor) was stripped. Has enough grab to run without load, but once loaded it slipped.
It could also be a broken key. One of the keys will break lengthwise. Usually this happens if someone shifts the mixer while it’s under a load and running.
Jesus Silva look for any burrs on the gears. If you changed the grease but didn’t completely remove all of it there can be small metal shavings in the old grease. That old grease can migrate in between the gears and bind them
Pull the ring down to remove it. It is held in place by friction from small spring loaded balls pressing against the inside diameter of the ring. If the planetary is removed, the ring should come down with the planetary.
1) Be sure all 4 cover screws are removed, as well as the nuts on the top of the shafts. 2) If the gears have bound/locked-up you may need to manually roll-back (counter-clockwise as viewed from the front) the motor to release the tension.
I would like to ask about the setting of the main shaft to the planetary. I completely rebuilt my unit. When I first fired it up it would tick in first and had no difference between 1st and 2nd gear. I loosened the nut on the planetary and same on the top of the shaft. 1st started working good, but second disappeared. Third works good. I'm assuming this is a trial and error process. I also learned that flipping the gear on the top of the main shaft could have catastrophic consequences.

Hi I have a HOBART mixer D300 20qts.spinning to slow and if I hold the shaft she will stop can you held finding what the problem maybe

I love how they say to use latex gloves and the guy in the video isn't wearing any gloves
Anthony Guiliano II I found every time I pulled apart these mixers the gloves would catch on a burr on a gear and the gloves would rip open.
Excellent , Chrystal clear, Thank you so much. Mike
Thank you very much for posting this video you just save me a lot of money

Can I replace the switch with a "dimmer light switch" to allow slow starts when mixing?
No, you would do damage to the motor.
