Yes, this is Mr. White Snake himself on lead vocals, David Coverband (as Robert Plant calls him lol), but let's not forget the little-known dynamic Glenn Huges on bass and backing vocals, a screaming banshee in his own right. With the great Jon Lord on keys, you never know what hidden gems he's going to come up with, rock, classical, otherwise, and let's not forget the ever-energetic, bombastic, and ass-kicking Ian Paice on drums. One of my favorite DP songs of all time.
Great tune, I saw the tour for that album twice in 1974 once indoors in a large arena then outside in a big park in Hartford CT. Both times the volume was overwhelming at times but as clean as I ever heard. Underestimate this Mark 3 of Deep Purple at your own risk, to really see and hear what I mean, check them out live at the California Jam 1974. The song You Fool No One has one of Ritchie Blackmore's best guitar solos as he really brings the power and glory to their amazing performance. Great stuff, Burn is a great song and album. Previous (Mark II) lineup included vocalist Ian Gillan & bassist Roger Glover. Mark II was responsible for albums In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, Made in Japan, and Who Do We Think We Are. Mark II is widely considered the best lineup and period of Deep Purple; Gillan and Blackmore unfortunately increasingly got on each others' nerves which led to GIllan and Glover leaving. Mark III didn't last either, and...well, there's a long, long history since with quite a few other lineups along the way that one can find online if interested.
The level of controversy that Blackmore generates will ensure he stays in the conversation for a while yet as this comments section testifies. He's always known how to manipulate the media and the public and 50 years down the line those Mk. 2 songs still fire me up regardless of his reputation, attitude or perceived skill level.

What could have turned into a wreck gave a fine LP and most of all to this fantastic song, in which everything seems to work, particularly Coverdale's vocal and Paice fantastic drumming (he has an important role in the way drumming evolved in the eighties, being so different of the usual 70's drumming, much more dynamic). Strange you say members are constantly changing on keys and drums since Jon Lord on keyboards and Ian Paice on drums were on all albums of the band (until 2002 for the former).
Turn the album over and you see the candles just out and smoking. This was blackmore's band but he left as they were getting too funky. That was Hughes. He was one funky white boy. Stevie Wonder once said, he was his favorite white singer. Yeah. Peace

Ritchie Blackmore is still on guitar, & Jon Lord is still on keyboards. Glenn Hughes has replaced Roger Glover on bass, & David Coverdale has replaced Ian Gillan on lead vocals.

You both are wrong , Blackmore was always the prime mover of the bend and was always there until he left the band in late 74 starting he’s own band rainbow with Ronnie James dio. The one who was in n out was Ian Gilan who was replaced by David Coverdale in this album and storm bringer. There you have it now you know.
So...there's not really a set leader in Deep Purple. Early on in Mark I, Jon Lord heavily influenced the group and was kind of the leader as he was the oldest by a few years and had classical training. In Mark II, it was more so Ritchie and Jon having the most influence. In Mark III, it was basically Ritchie and Ian Paice as well as Hughes and Coverdale for their funk style. So there really isn't a "leader" per se, but some members are more influential than others depending on the era. Mark IV was the only one where it was basically all Coverdale and Hughes, but that era on lasted one album. You see the influence when you listen to the albums, easier to see that way. Anything classical or whimsical was Jon, anything hard rock was Jon, Ritchie and Ian and anything funk was Hughes and Coverdale.

I love this song. But strangely, I never find myself seeking out anything from the MK III or MK IV versions of Purple. Nothing wrong ,really, with any of those albums, but I'm just partial to the MK II version of the band. Blackmore is a great guitarist, but I understand what Paul is saying. He is a difficult dude to deal with. And I agree that Steve Morse is way ahead of Blackmore technically. And plays the old riffs fantastic! There's a lot of good music in those albums from the Steve Morse era, but just like the MK III and IV versions of the band, I really dont listen to it much. I know they have a new axe man but know nothing about the guy. I honestly can't remember the dudes name. The only remaining founder member of the band is the great drummer, Ian Paice. The world-class drummer that has always been ignored by the rock press.

Never read anywhere else that Blackmore was the 3rd or 4th DP best guitarist. Quite absurd. He is the guitar sound of DP. His technique had a deep influence on guitar playing. He was so brilliant and interesting when guitar solo are usually such a bore.

Besides, admittedly Blackmore wasn't a technician like Morse or Satriani ... he was all about FEEL. Ritchie may have been an asshole, but who cares about that? Neither you nor I have to deal with him ... we just need to listen to his music. The songs Ritchie wrote move my soul. Moreover, he is a GREAT guitarist who knows how to write a riff and perform a sensational solo. His tone is unique and amazing, and his emotional feel for the electric guitar is unequaled, except perhaps by Roy Buchanan or Carlos Santana.

Actually, MK3 lasted 2 albums (Burn and Stormbringer). Then Blackmore left and was replaced by Tommy Bolin on Come Taste the Band (MK4).

Who was the bandleader ist quite easy to answer. Deep Purple was always driven by the tension between Jon on organ and Ritchie on guitar.
