Part of that keyboard solo where Jon Lord makes it sound like a harpsicord is so Bach-inspired it's not even funny. People don't realize how much Blackmore and Lord were inspired by classical music, especially JS Bach. Then you throw in jazz and the blues, and you have a recipe for rock near-perfection. Deep Purple was THE SHIT!

I totally agree, except for the small detail that I wouldn't mention Bonham in the same breath as the other three at all. The word "overrated" doesn't even begin to describe him. Deep Purple (who I saw live in '72) had several advantages over their contemporaries. First: they were the first band I ever saw who were better LIVE than in the studio. Good Gawd can they dial it up. Then they had Ian Paice, maybe one of the best drummers who ever lived. Jon Lord on the Hammond B-3 organ, and nobody disputes him as the KING of that instrument. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar... the father of neo-classical shredding. And finally, those amazing vocals from David Coverdale.

Your reaction is stunning for this "elderly" man - Brad going directly into ZOMBIE-MODE with a tear on hes chin, and Lex`s body going: LETS ROCK - I love it.
Deep Purple - - what can I say - they have been my band since I heard the first tunes coming out my Dad`s radio from a band playing in Hamburg - then I was HOOK`d, and still are - now try DP with the "Old strait Jacket" - they still ignite me - love em.
Paice & Glover are in another level even today.
    1 like Brad & Lex

Deep Purple was really popular and loved but I think people forget what great musicians these guys were! Guitar, bass and drums are outstanding and their organist is on another level!

Come visit us in Sweden and you'll see how non-forgotten their musicianship is :-) Here, Deep Purple is and have always been bigger than Led Zeppelin. Literally. With all that it implies.

@@erikthompson619 I don't live in Sweden so that doesn't really apply to what I'm talking about. But I have been to Sweden 3 times in the 80-90's I'd love to visit again.

Great reaction and choice of song!
The song that gave David Coverdale the job as new lead vocalist in Deep Purple after Ian Gillian is from that this same album. A song called "Mistreated".
There are several great live versions of that song on YT. Both with Coverdales more bluesy approach, and later with Ronnie James Dios more theatrical masteries (when Ritchie formed Rainbow).
But the original is on this record, just as the fantastic title song you just reacted to.

Nice to see music has no color barriers. If they can appreciate a band I’ve listened to since the 70s then I can appreciate the music Black musicians have contributed too. More into EarthWind and Fire, old school jazz, early rap and hip hop. Keep up the good work B&L.

Glad you guys love this song. I first heard it in the summer of 1977 when I came home from vacation on my grandparents farm. A family friend who was a Deep Purple fan gave me an 8 track tape with all their music on it. This song was the standout for me. It literally opened me up to so much music out there from multiple genres. It was a great time to discover music!
