From what i heard in Jocko's podcast, Jonny Kim had a troubled and traumatic childhood and he refused to let that pain and emotinal damage dictate his life so he decided to do something that will help forward life as well as help humanity like the mentioned being a combat medic and Harvard doctor to save lives. With the astronaut role he wants to advanced science and (I think he) probably wants to find ways to have humanity look for a new perspective of living life in the stars. Just my opinion.

"It would be a FALSE statement to say that being Korean-American inspired me to take this path. It's a much DEEPER intrinsic desire to serve humanity and to leave this world a better place that transcends race, politics, ethnicity, religion."
It pisses him off that people see it as just him chasing titles, he has made it clear accomplishments don't matter compared to how you treat other people and this is coming from HIM.
"I never fit in anywhere growing up, even in the Korean-American community because I was 'too white'. I'd get made fun of. I laugh and smile, like it's ridiculous, but when you're a kid, it's a big deal."
"Astronauts bring together in a way that alliances and politicians CANNOT do." His is a story of perseverance, hardship and love for those around you more than race.
It's unfortunate that literally no one stepping up to the political plate has what it takes to bring people together and accomplish good things that we can agree are good just as human beings that are citizens of a country. That is literally the reason why Jonny Kim is an astronaut, because it inspires people in a way that politics cannot do and led to innumerable scientific advancements in the STEM field for society which he is greatly passionate about. He does not deserve all the shit that comes from being a politician, he deserves to continue being held as a national hero and that's what the country needs to(Even though we don't deserve it). No matter how good of a politician he'd be, that would all go away.
If Jonny Kim wanted to do it, we know damn well he would crush it like everything else he has put his mind to do. If there's something he's not doing, it's because he doesn't want to.
He has said what your accomplishments are not what truly matter, what matters is positively impacting the people around you and being there for the people in your life - coming from someone who had been humbled by the most intense situations imaginable who realized we really are small in comparison to what life can bring upon us, and denounces social media being used in the manner it is(Something to reflect on).
Growing up, no one knew the shit he had to go through, and his friends, even family, people at school still saw him as weak, a certain kind of way that especially Asian Americans didn't understand and no one wanted him to be a SEAL(So think about that before you blame your parents for things - you probably don't want it as much as you think you do if you're not willing to fight for it). He hid away at lunch, but kept his head held high, treated people well and continued to be active in sports and get straight A's despite many others using their traumatic upbringings as an excuse to be degenerates. He continued to fight back and protect his family for years, success or fail, with all his heart and soul craved to be a warrior to kill the enemy and protect more people, and he needed the convince himself he could be made that way and would be accepted as such. Nothing could convince him otherwise, and he realized having that heart to be humble, work hard no matter how hard things got is exactly what makes a warrior what he is - which is why the warrior community gravitates to him. He kept his head down, worked well with others, lifted others up, and just crushed everything he did through pure grit, not natural intelligence. But he believes he wasn't meant to be a SEAL, his childhood experiences just brought it out in him. He has said being a career special operator didn't seem sustainable at a certain point. Having such belonging and purpose and value to his teammates who absolutely loved him made him feel at home. He was blown away by bravery he saw from them that he viewed as more than his own, and the powerful friendships he formed, that to lose them in combat, feeling helpless as a medic made him want to take what he could do medically to the next step. And more than that, he wanted to SERVE in the name of his teammates, knowing how amazing those men were, realizing what a loss the world had without them, whenever he was down was enough to keep him going to ensure he was compensating for their absence.
Then when he heard about an astronaut, for the reasons mentioned at the beginning, that form of service outweighed his reasons for being a doctor and made the hard decision to leave medicine, but for the same fundamental reasons of service to fill the gap in the world left by his friends' departure.
Memes are fun at all, but we can't deny that's overweighing his ACTUAL story severely, it shows how people are sheltered and don't see the honor of Jonny Kim who took it upon himself to deal with REAL shit for the sake of other people, which is a travesty, what made this man do what he did and what he had to sacrifice and put out, Jonny Kim has an infinite degree of honor and devotion for the people in his life.
No one cared about Jonny when he was in high school, even in the SEAL Teams to an extent, just from being an enlisted guy with no college degree. If he didn't got combat decorations, he would still be just as great, people just wouldn't know about it. If he decided not to be an astronaut, he'd still be just as great, we just wouldn't know about it. Jonny Kim demonstrates we need to stop looking up to famous people and to people with high character, they're around us, just like Jonny Kim was. Everyone would have miscounted Jonny Kim if we didn't know what he was truly made of on paper. And on paper really pales in comparison to what those who have worked with said about him, occupation doesn't equal character, there are bad SEALs, bad doctors, maybe even subpar astronauts. There was a Silver Star Navy SEAL in Vietnam that was convicted as a rapist, lol. In Kim's case, he is 200% good to go.
There's no such thing as a "typical SEAL" except to civilians, you only see what a person is when they've been tested. Everyone would've miscounted Kim. Physicality is necessary in warfighters, but no one wants a platoon of bodybuilders. Everyone will reach their breaking point, and it's about continually pushing past them, a lifestyle of doing that. Mind over matter, it's about how MEAN you are, not how big you are. Undersized SEAL? There's only such thing as a GOOD SEAL that works well with others, a good leader and humble. Desmond Doss, Nic Cheque, many others. Some of the toughest and high performing Navy SEALs come from the smurf crew. Ryan Job, Nick Norris, probably Tom Norris(MOH recipient in Vietnam) too. Doesn't hurt to listen to warriors talking about their world instead of going off of Hollywood misconceptions. "Common men with a uncommon desire to succeed." To think the status of a man is valuing common ass shit like partying over risking life, limb, sight and sanity for your teammates.
We don't need a biopic because real life is more influential on humanity, let's get real life accounts like documentaries or books. If you can't see that, then honestly you're sheltered. How you talk and pass yourself off as says absolutely nothing about your character. Put that tough talking influencer, dude picking up girls, guy showing off how he can talk confidently, podcaster or bodybuilder in the toughest situations "soft personality" warriors have been in and see how quickly they cower. They're not men at all if they have to rely on others' perceptions rather than their devotion to other people, and their personality vibe more than their actions. Relatability? It's about him being in the same situations as a lot of people and applying extreme grit to accomplish his goals. Jonny Kim isn't going to inspire anyone to be a warrior who didn't already have the desire inside them. What you think of the war has nothing to do with respecting the WARRIOR.
"Where does he rank amongst Asian American role models right now?" Good lord, if you even have to ask that question regarding Jonny Kim... It says a lot about the person asking the question.

Many of my relatives were/are veterans, my Chinese dad was U. S. Army during WWII .
He also got his pilot wings. Awsome accomplishments.

Even if its only 4.4% Asians in Navy Seals, let me tell you.. Asian Americans have the highest passing rate in BUDS (Navy Seal school) among black, white, Latino and Asian
Since there's less Asians in special operations, there's a lot less people that do it just to try it out, and there's a higher amount of Asians that are 100% in to be warriors, irrespective of "representation".
being a seal & combat medic is a harder m.o.s than being a seal machine gunner. Believe me he is not sitting back in the cut. When in combat and someone yells "MEDIC" or "DOC" he's right there upfront.

Legend has it, he's the only Asian American with parents who have actually vocalized being proud of him since he accomplished all their dreams. XD But seriously, if this dude became president, he would have the more impressive resume ever, wouldn't be able to match it. On paper, he would certainly be the most qualified.

Perhaps the most impressive part of his story is that he overcame an insanely traumatic childhood to accomplish all this. He literally saved his mother from being shot by his alcoholic abusive father. His father then had a standoff with the police who he called and he was shot and killed. The kindness of the officers afterwards is part of what inspired him to serve. He talks about his story on his interview on the Jocko podcast.
Navy Seal, Sniper, Doctor, Astronaut, Naval Aviator. He had a traumatic childhood with his dad too. This guy has the backstory of a superhero.
When serving in the Navy, he felt helpless seeing his fellow compatriots killed in action, not because he couldn't save them but because of his superior's flawed diagnosis. In one incident, when he questioned his leader's decision, Jonny was asked to leave the medic tent. His superior had MD and Jonny didn't. That is the reason why Jonny became a doctor so he will not be overruled by some flawed leader.
Watch his podcast with Jocko about his father. His home life was not as rosy as you think it would have been.
There's nothing bad that I can say against this amazing dude. With a rise of idiocracy, people are in their feelings about being mediocre as Kim's stellar career starts to break down their self-deception of being adequate.
Folks, Johnny Kim earned a Silver and Bronze Star with "V" valor as a Navy Seal. He earned this as a Navy Seal in combat. He was "IN THE FIGHT" not in the background! Get your facts straights!

The way I see why the 442nd was the most decorated unit was because their commanders gave them the toughest and most dangerous missions that they didn’t want to give the white soldiers…They did as they were ordered and kicked ass, but I wonder if the commanders accepted higher casualty rates because they were Japanese.
You're most likely correct since racism was common in Allied countries during the WW2 era, which is why minority troops were segregated from their white counterparts.
I remember my older brother telling me how the military leadership in both world wars (which consisted of whites) sent black troops to fight in battle and then when most or all of them died, the white military leaders took credit for winning the battle.

So that's probably why you see a lot of white dudes in military action movies doing badass shit and not minority lead roles in military movies, it's because the writers are biased.

3:25 I’m glad that that person made that statement about Jonny Kim’s military career being linked to all of his accomplishments. When I first heard his story I always thought that there had to be more to his story than what people were telling. I figured there were some details that people were leaving out. But I didn’t want to come off as a jealous hater by saying that.
That connection honestly makes Jonny Kim even greater and more to aspire to. It doesn't change anything, the why doesn't change the what. All that means is what caused Kim to pursue it, it doesn't make it any easier lol. He got a civilian scholarship to medical school, got accepted to a civilian medical school, the military gave him an opportunity to return to the Navy as an officer and that's it. Saying being a doctor is linked to being an astronaut is like saying being a military aviator is linked to it - it's true but really doesn't make it more possible for anyone else applying on merit alone. All astronauts needed a STEM undergrad and grad degree with 3 years of experience, and having a military background or a strong civilian background is a sign of putting in more.

@@Preus-by8ru It definitely is, his military experience that he volunteered and proved himself noted from his recommendation letters and application of skills some of which were learned in the military, when tested in person as an applicant, with gave him an advantage. Just like everything else on any applicant's resume like GPA, degree, recommendation letters, flight time, type of work in a STEM field, work experience that you've done well in. With this logic, you can say all those applicant advantages are the same thing - of course there is a multitude of things that make a strong job applicant that not everyone had chosen to pursue and excel in prior to applying. The opportunity to do what he did in the military is available to everyone, and he showed the high character he has by putting in the work to do that job well. Nothing was given to him, he took it. Everyone knows military experience is a plus. What the military itself did FOR him was allow him to remain active duty as an astronaut, receive flight surgeon training being an officer that graduated medical school, and be commissioned through the STA-21 program, which only selects 2 enlisted sailors a year out of the entire Navy. The military itself had no interference on his acceptance to Harvard, in fact the military didn't even want him to go to Harvard, they wanted him to attend from their select list of medical schools which didn't include Harvard.

Exactly, his platoonmate wrote about their time in Ramadi in "The Last Punisher" and Jonny is one of the most mentioned people in the book, everyone gravitates to him. Jonny Kim was once pinned down by an enemy machine gunner for a few minutes while running point, and Jonny Kim just said "Fuck, that was gnarly, and not in a good way." Making assumptions that because of someone's stature and personality, that automatically signifies what their character, respectability and "image" is as a whole? Wtf? Those kinds of statements do more harm than good, and only serve to keep people down that they claim to serve. Guys, copy and paste then listen to "Jocko Willink and Mike Sarraille share their impressions of Jonny Kim in the SEAL Teams." This 4-minute podcast shares how his fellow Navy Seals were not impressed of this little Asian guy, and surprisingly Jonny stepped up and outperformed their expectation.
Candidates and instructors, not SEALs he worked with. Every single American AND Asian-American would have and did miscount him throughout his life(Including the Fung Brothers stating his humility and small stature make him less of a SEAL ). This is not a race thing, it is a physical stature and personality misjudgment. Same happened with Desmond Doss and no one could deny his extreme bravery. It's all about performance and teamwork and unfortunately being seeing him put out, Sarraille and the instructors needed to have a judgment of the candidates, even if they were wrong. If they were fat, they tried to get them to quit and if they persisted, they would earn respect and be told "You're good to go", which is exactly what happened with Ryan Job. Maybe they didn't exactly zero in on Jonny like that but throughout BUD/S, workup and deployment he shows them the kind of performer and team player he is. Everyone in BUD/S NEVER discounted him, that is literally impossible when actually working with him. Sarraille never even gave Jonny a hard time,. You can't say you've never judged someone without seeing them under pressure. If you have what it takes, it doesnt matter what anyone else says because it is all strictly perfotmance based, the only possible way to not get respect is if you suck and shouldnt be there. Nic Cheque(RIP) told him "Hey, you belong here man" in the first couple weeks. Jocko said he never had a problem, Kevin Lacz said he was an excellent medic, Sarraille said he was exceptional on the battlefield, Chris Kyle said he was a great guy, Leif Babin said he was incredible. That's because of the character he has as a man, that has nothing to do with his race. F*ck turds, no matter what race they are. And long live STUDs like JK no matter what race they are.
