You won't be disappointed, I can promise you this. You need to do at least ten reactions to get a good picture of their music. This is not a band with just 1 or 2 great hits. The growling guitarist is Mark Jansen (read Yansen), the founder and mastermind of Epica. Remember his name :) He was also in another band with Floor Jansen from Nightwish, before he founded Epica. The lead female soprano, Simone Simons was Mark's GF at that time and she joined Epica, just a few months after its formation. And yes, her voice is absolutely beautiful, just like she is :) She's my number 1 female singer of all time. You should know that 4 out of 6 Epica members have a degree in music. So even if Mark is the mastermind, all band members actually contribute to songwriting, including scoring for orchestra and choir (mostly Coen Janssen, the keyboardist). That's why their music is so amazing and diverse. Lyrics are written either by Mark or Simone. Btw, the mic stand is in the shape of a letter S (Simone Simons). You know which channel I think is super underrated? Metal Piano Music. The guy spends weeks composing classic metal songs into classical/relaxing piano pieces and he hardly gets any views. I love his arrangement of The Sentinel by Judas Priest. That dude deserves millions of followers.
Hi Anastasia. I’m a bid Epica fan and so the more Epica you do here on your channel, the better! A good way to continue would be to check out the videos they published from the Omega Alive show. This includes their opus magnum “Kingdom of Heaven part 3”. However, I would also like to draw your attention to another band called MaYaN. MaYaN if a symphonic death metal band created by Mark Jansen from Epica with a couple of friends. Originally, a number of members from Epica (including Simone) participated, but from time reasons, only Mark and Ariën (the drummer from Epica) still participate beside many other band members. What characterizes MaYaN is that they are very heavy (more than Epica), but still very symphonic (for their latest album they finally gathered enough money to pay a full orchestra). They sometimes have up to 5 vocalists including a professional female opera singer (Laura Macri) and Marcela Bovio (which you have already seen in your Ayreon reactions). They were in NY IN 2020 January and did a short tour in only in 3 cities seen them in LA WOW KICK ASS SHOW and so sad they might not come to the states till 2023

How do bands like Epica get together? Well, you have somebody like Mark Jansen (the guitarist on the left), who got pushed out of the band that he had helped to found (the name of that band was After Forever, in which Floor Jansen was the singer, by the way). He did not share the vision for After Forever´s future with other members as he wanted to incorporate the orchestra and the choir to the bands´s music to a greater degree than others. But he needed somebody to help him with orchestration and choir arrangements and that is how he got in touch with Coen (the keyboardist), I assume, who unlike Mark studied music at conservatory (Mark studied psychology). Then they were able to find the second guitarist, a bassist and a drummer, who were replaced one by one by current Epica´s members later on. Isaac (the other guitarist) and Arien (the drummer) had been actually members of the same band in different years, before they joined Epica, I believe. Rob (the bassist) used to be in Delain, which is/was another Dutch symphonic metal band. They still needed a singer back then, when Epica was still called Sahara Dust in 2002. They tried to convince a female vocalist from Norway to join them, but their talks broke down for one reason or another. They were not able to record a demo with her. And so, Mark was able to convince his girlfriend back then Simone Simons to replace the Norwegian vocalist. They eventually broke up, but the band did not, because both of them saw the band as more important than their hurt feelings. Simone is married to the keyboardist from Kamelot - Oliver Palotai. And Mark´s girlfried is a vocalist from the third band that he helped to found - MaYaN. You should really try Nemophila, though, but I would go for "(MV) Nemophila - Revive" instead of the usual Dissension. They also covered Megitsune from BabyMetal. It is very different from Lovebites.
Awesome band Epica, my favourite since 2009. By the way, you really NEED to react to Nemophila. They are another all girl japanese metal band and they are great. Mayu, the singer, is absolutely amazing, she can sing however she wants. Please react to them.

Epica is amazing, but there are more great Dutch metalbands. You should definitly check out "Dear Mother" With their debut album "Bulletproof". They are a new dutch metalband formed by ex-Delain guitarist Merel Bechtold and ex-Delain drummer Joey de Boer. They teamed up with David "Pear" Hruska as their vocalist. Its realy worthwhile!
