Yo I remember watching this when I was middle school. Spawn is such a badass character. I went in hoping I would get an action packed series, and what I got was a depressing, existential, and horrifying show. I love it. And Keith David rules too, you can’t have Spawn without Keith David.
I loved "Spawn" since I was a teenager. Not only did I watch the series, but I also read the first 30 issues and played its video game adaptation, "Spawn: Armageddon." Good times!!! 👏👏👏
Yep, there are only Japanese studios creating these more mature animated series. It's a shame because Spawn showed us that American studios could deliver such creative and mesmerizing series too. Castlevania is great but would really love some European weird style animation too.
I am so glad that Keith David reprised his role as Spawn in his guest appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 and to this day, i still occasionally revisit that game just to play as Spawn (who've ive been wanting in Mortal Kombat since MK9 - i was a junior in high school when that game came out).
Man we desperately NEED more Spawn content outside of cameos and comics, he can make a fast comeback with all the adult superhero shows right now. I also want to see an animated adaptation of the 2003 Hellspawn with the art direction closely following Ashley Wood's art or even an animated Sam & Twitch series
There's such a gritty, special, foreboding and existential feeling to this show. This cult-classic. Focusing on the inner turmoil Al has to deal with, the torture he goes through. There's so much character to it... It's really interesting. I've rewatched it a few times. One thing to note is that Wynn isn't a businessman, he's a pretty high-up guy within the CIA or something like that.
Can we please bring back this animation and art style??? I’d love to see more of this even compared to today’s superhero tv/movie media. Maybe just with more fight choreography and stuff
I’m so glad you talked about this show. I loved Spawn and actually just rewatched it recently. I found this channel because of Berserk, I stayed because you’re the man Ryan! Merry Christmas!
Although there were home releases, it was definitely hard to find for a long time. Having it steaming on Max now is the easiest access to it we’ve ever had
Hey, there. Do you know what's even more brutal, gory and awesome than Spawn? Evil Ernie. It's like the combination of Spawn and Evil Dead. Ernie is a 90s horror icon too. At least for those who knew him. Oh, he is also part of the Lady Death "universe".
I used to stay up late to watch it with my mom & older brother but we never finished it. It wouldn't be until the pandemic that I managed to sit down & complete it. Still a badass cartoon
2:16 Why the f*ck would you make a PG-13 Spawn, same with (Alien vs Predator)!? John Leguizamo slaps as the Violator tho! While I’m not huge on the human designs the Violator monster design is awesome, I just wish he was a bit more colorful and not just grey.
I was a fan of spawn since 10 when it debuted the comics and I was 15 when this show debuted and one of my favorite adult animation shows. It’s like Heavy Metal meets Batman tas
Gotta add this to the growing list of "Plan to Watch"! I've only tangentially known about Spawn, but always thought he looked awesome. Maybe this is the push I needed!
Considering the current revival wave over in Japan, where they brought series of 20 years and more back for either remakes or continuations, maybe McFarlane should try looking for a production over there. I could imagine worse things than a Spawn anime. And between X-Men, Suicide Squat isekai and more, it'd not like it'd be the first time for a western comic to become an anime either.
@@deathserpent9747 Nice one Sherlock! Ofc I'm including Spawn as well as Deadman Wonderland too. 🤨Surely this isn't your 1st time hearing this. Spawn is notorious for not having any clear direction in it's storytelling with an over-focus on violence and gore.
LEGENDARY programming. Along with so many others from HBO during that period. Too many of some of the best shows of all time. To think arguably the GOAT channel’s namesake would essentially be devoured by Cinemax/Discovery channel. 😂
I just finished this series after a LONG hiatus of putting off finishing it. Worth it, but it totally could be expanded on. I heard there was a chance, but McFarlend wanted to expand the animated style.
It's not impossible to continue the show considering Primal and Unicorn Warriors Eternal, but yeah...aside from Tui Sutherland trying to get Wings of Fire adapted through HBO (It's really quite Violent and Dark for a supposed Kids Series. At least Arc1 and Darkstalker Are!) I see no chance of them reviving the Spawn Cartoon. Witch sucks cause the ending of Al Simmons declaring he's 'Ready to be Human' is going to haunt me like me being deprived from seeing Spyro finding his Family in Skylanders Academy. Yes I know opposite ends of the spectrum but both those shows suffered from drops of view ala Season2 onward a niche' thing that was popular than and than faded. Also...Spyro actually sorta becomes a bit of a tormented protagonist towards the end with his struggle between light and darkness and while I'd want more than that 'SPOILER: that whole Eon's betrayal thing and Spyro falling to the side of Evil birthing his Wings of Darkness makes that dragon-boy look like a sorta Guts/Griffith crossbred! I'm not even joking I re-watched the show twice playing Berserk OST through the whole thing and from that point forward I kept hearing Skylanders Opening theme everytime I hear 'Tell me Why'. (It has annoying filler in places but still good when it gets there.) While Ryan is on the Subject of Dark Disturbing 90's cartoons for Adults he really needs to Check out the Animated film Feildae, for GOD that film was Epic. I keep seeing people whine about how Edgy it was, but what they fail to see is the actual Genius in the movie. I still think Francis is best Animated film Protagonist.
Every couple of years I go back and watch the series and while it's not without problems( story gets a bit bogged down with too many plot lines and I wish Spawn did more to effect the story rather than just being a mopey sad fuck) it really is a unique gem in western animation and something like it hasn't really been attempted since. You just don't seen many, if any, dark adult animated dramas outside of anime.
And you're right about that cliffhanger. Talk about blue balls and it ended just when it seemed like things we're starting pick up with the whole Heaven and Hell war and that maybe Al was going to be taking a more active role and start becoming something close to a hero, and not to mention the unanswered questions of what was going to happen to Wanda and Terry and that whole thing or what happened to Jason Wynn and the alliance that he and Clown/Violator were starting up.
At the time, American animation was already very popular before Spawn came along with things like the Simpsons, Duckman, The Critic, Space Gosth coast to coast , Dr. Karz and Beavis and Butt Head. What Spawn really brought was being one of the few American animated series, along with The Maxx and Eon Flux, that were adult without being a sitcom.
I've honestly always considered the edited together HBO trilogy to be the canon version not because it was my first introduction to it but because it worked so well as a movie with each season.
Sucks to hear how it ended. Good shows getting prematurely cancelled by their networks is a universal bane for everyone, old and young. And yeah, most animated shows for adults nowadays have that Family Guy/Rick&Morty artstyle.

Didn't John Leguizamo ate maggots in the movie? Talk about dedication, lol I'll miss animations like this, its so moody and unique, I remember watching S1 back in 2016, no one knows who Spawn is except me lol. With Invincible's popularity, I hope it can open up studios in doing animated adaptations again, and actually try and imitate the artist's art style. Imagine adaptations of Saga or Wytches, that'll be fucking awesome
If Ghost Rider can get two attempts and still fail. Spawn deserves two attempts where one is better than the other. As for the animated series, yeah I loved it and own all of the DVDs that exist of it. Can't recall when it was the earliest time I saw the show, felt like I just stumbled upon it during a visit at a video store and randomly finding one of the seasons many years ago. This is the kind of material I feel we need more of when it comes to adult animation. What is considered 'Adult' animation today is just shows like Family Guy, South Park and Simpsons all taking cracks at real life events and references of people that had their moment in the spotlight. Spawn existed in probably the right time for it to exist. Right when you had peak Simpsons, Beavis and Butt-Head, Daria and other obscure animated shows around their time. It just fit with that norm. It felt totally out of place if you watched it today and compare it to where animated tv shows are now. But everytime I did watch Spawn, I felt like a rewind back to that period to remember all of the other things that were around.
Hey Ryan, can you do a review of goblin slayer? I think the writers are trying to make a lot of similarities to berserk. Anyway, it’s pretty graphic but I like it.
Hell yeah Spawn! The motherfucking Spawn! 😎 Portrayed by Michael Jai White and voiced by Keith Motherfucking David. I’m not a Spawn fan but he means business. I like the Todd McFarlene art style and his cameos in various media as well as video games like Mortal Kombat, COD(??), and others. Why didn't we get another spawn movie? The problem is Todd himself. He wants to direct it. The studios who saw his failure of a movie decline it everytime. Doesn't matter what McFarlane says, he messes it up with his conditions for filming it himself.
I saw this back when i was way too young but really the first season was the best. Everything else was so slow and spawn never really fought the violator all that much which was lame. This show could have been so much better. The animation is top notch though.
The reason why Spawn The Animated Series got canceled because the real life sports player Tony Twist sued Todd Mcfarlane without his permission to name the character in The Spawn series aka the mobster Tony Twist because Tony Twist's mother in real life is crying because there's character named Tony Twist doing bad stuff something her son will never do and guessed what he did in real life and made Todd Mcfarlane payed alot of damages and Tony Twist in real life became the thing he trys to destroy and became an asshole in the end and Tony Twist in real life,he is no better and not saint as well being jerk and asshole very equal to his comic book version of himself and I am glad that I am not fan of Tony Twist in real life rather than I being a full fan of Todd Mcfarlane.
Sad shame the series dropped by season 3 as we wanted to see so much more! Also Spawn was but another Image character to get a series; others include the very 1st, The Maxx, on MTV, Savage Dragon on USA Network, and 2 Witchblade series( one live action and 1 anime series!❤ Sexy too!).
