  • This washing machine had a washplate that was stuck onto the gearcase shaft. I show a way to attempt to free it and then how to break it off as a last resort

    GOT IT, I found a solution. Fit a long wire underneath the wash plate and wrap the opposite ends around a long piece of lumber laid horizontally across the opening over the washer. The longer the better, I used a 6ft piece. Push up on one side of it with your shoulder using leverage to pry it off. The amount of force I had to use lifted the washer from one side, meaning there was no chance in hell I would’ve gotten it off with my hands alone even given the right tools. Leverage is the only way.

    I removed one a few days ago.
    I removed it with the cabinet still on it.
    I worked a dryer belt under the wash plate. Laid a pad on one side of the cabinet. Tied the dryer belt so it was short enough to let me run a 2x4 through it to the side of the cabinet with the padding on it. I then started yanking up with the 2x.
    Did this a few times working the belt around to a few different places under the wash plate.
    All if a sudden it came off pretty easy.
    I have had to remove regular GE agitators this way a few times in the past.

    I tried boiling water, CLR, PB Blaster, citric acid, freeze-off, i took two tie downs and put under and attached to a 2x4 and did this over 3 days on and off, a shoe string, and nothing worked at all. I finally thought why am i going through all this work and it's only $26 for a new washplate on Amazon. So I ordered a new one and took the hammer to it. Even getting the few pieces stuck to the gear was a huge pain. It was like it was welded on. There was no way this was coming off any other way. Only wish I would have done it earlier.

    Been dealing with these for years, best idea I've seen from another tech is to slip three pump up air bags "shims" levelers, one under each rib, pump them up, back the center bolt out 3/4 of the way, hammer the bolt, sometimes works..

    Did this today after trying most of the methods discussed. The plastic interior seems to have heated up and fused with the metal drive shaft. Caused it to very tight. I'm going to try and use my dremel tool to cut the rest of the plastic off the drive shaft. Thanks for that idea.

  • @SteveBaerst
    @SteveBaerst Год назад +4

    Based on my washer symptoms it appeared that I just needed to a new drive hub so should have been a simple repair but nothing is ever easy. I tried just about all of the solutions in this video and others (metal hooks, citric acid, degreaser, air bags, shims, prying tools, hair dryer, etc.) to get the wash plate off intact but despite putting tremendous upward pressure, nothing worked. Decided to cut away plastic to access the metal part of the agitator that sits on the spline. Use a rotary tool and then a chisel to get the plastic off the metal piece. Then tried all the suggestions (boiling water, lubricant, bearing pullers, etc) to get the metal piece off and none of that worked as well. Then decided to use a rotary tool with a diamond blade to cut a slot in the metal to see if I could loosen it. This was not easy as well but after 3-4 hours of cutting, finally got a slot cut on the top and one side that went all the way to the motor shaft/spline. Then used a hammer claw with a small piece of wood underneath to protect the bottom of the drum. This finally did the trick and it came off. There was some rust on the shaft but it didn't appear to be fused so it was just on there really, really tight. Then removed the old drive hub and all the gears were stripped so replaced it with the $10 part from amazon and washer appears to be working normally. Probably ended up spending $100 in supplies but way too much time. In the end it would have been way easier just to buy a new washer but it became a challenge that I had to solve. Hopefully this fixes it for a while but who knows. Thanks to everyone for the videos and comments.

    As wild as it seems, this is the only solution for some whose agitator is stuck super tight. After exhausing all methods, since gonna replace the agitator anyway, I used a hack saw to saw away the plastic (Maytag Bravos) and now the center metal piece is still stuck but at least now can clean the bottom and focus on the real reason why the agitator is stuck on the shaft. Hopefully I can get it off. Maybe hacksaw method again.

    I found this channel because you have the correct combination for putting a whirlpool 5000 series into diagnostics mode, so thank you so much.
    I bought the metal hub assembly from Ben’s Appliances but yesterday nothing I tried could get the agitator plate off, citric wash, penetrating oil on the hub, prying from all sides etc. Finally I took a rubber hammer and started to alternately hit the sides of one of the agitator fins left right, left right. Eventually I could see that the agitator started twitching slightly left and right on the shaft with the blows. The twisting force had broken loose the rust binding between the teeth of the agitator and the hub. The agitator lifted right out by hand and undamaged.

  • @ChanceTalksBusiness
    @ChanceTalksBusiness Год назад

    I went this route. Finally got it all off. The metal in the agitator was stuck in the drive. Sprayed some Lucas penetrating oil in it and let it sit for 30 mins, grabbed some pliers and got it off.

    I had to do the same thing, except it was still welded on. Had to drill two small holes opposite each other. Then I lined a chisel across from the drilled holes smacked it one time split half finally after three days it was off.
    Well worth it, the new wash plate was $30 and the hub kit $10 from Amazon.

    I spray a WD-40 type lubricant into the center shaft.
    Then I hook two suspension springs from an old style Maytag washer under the wash plate.
    One spring hooked under the plate at the 9 o'clock position...The other spring hooked under the plate at the 3 o'clock position.
    Then wiggle and pull up on the wash plate.
    Rotate the wash plate 90 degrees. Realign the springs to 9' o'clock and 3 o'clock, hook them under the plate, wiggle and pull up.
    Sometimes it takes 5-10 minutes of rotating the wash plate 90 degrees, realigning the springs, and pulling up, but it works.
    The part number for the tub suspension springs is 12002773.
    Four new springs can be purchased on EBAY for $13.

  • @davehardy9555

    LMAO Mate! Looks like some shit I'd do! Ha Ha!! Once you get that center nut screwed off and the upper ring taken off you should just lift everything else (inner tub & agitator) straight up and out of the outer tub. I just did mine which is 15 years old and never been taken apart and cleaned. Mine lifted right up and out. Now keep in mind ladies, I'm 6' 2" and 250lbs of twisted steel and sex appeal! Not everyone is tall enough or strong enough to lift that inner tub up and out. But if you are, know that the hub cap looking agitator piece will come out with the inner tub after you remove the upper ring around the top and the nut holding the agitator on to the spline drive shaft. NOTE: Don't try to remove the agitator by itself. Get some good tacky rubber work gloves and get a good grip on that inner tank - however you can and life it straight up and over the outer tank. Anyway, I sure did get a kick out of him beating the shit out of his agitator! 🤣😂 I did that to a gas weed eater a few years back LOL!! Cheers!

    Sometimes this is the only way to remove the wash plate when replacing the gearcase. I always inform the customer of the process and that a new wash plate will be needed and they understand or you can try muscling it out for a few hours with vise grips and freeze spray until it’s warped and damaged and has to be replaced anyway. It’s rare that you can easily remove this wash plate without difficulty.

      I tried everything on my whirlpool. I soaked in pbb blaster for days than used the citric acid. After 5 days I broke out the angle grinder and cut off the plastic agitator from the steel hub. I still had to cut the the steel hub in 1/3s to get it off because it was so frozen on the shaft and cutting it in halves was not enough to free it up. Next time I would go directly to the angle grinder with the cutoff wheel. $20 at harbor freight.
