- Weber 22" Kettle Modification adding vent handle and drilling out rivet for vent and installing wing nut so underside of vent can be cleaned
The built up crust under the wheel just adds to the Mojo of the kettle. Never been an issue operating it.
But, never the less...good ingenuity.
paul REVERE Thanks for Watching Paul!
I’m not a handyman by any means but I made this upgrade to my kettle. Thanks Tom.
Thanks for watching!
Man what a deal! I know you needed another grill for the collection. I would have put a compression spring before the wing nut. It would keep the tension tight yet easy to turn.
Big Lew BBQ Good idea Big Lew!
Tom Horsman it work it's what I did on the vent to my drum smoker.
You got a great deal on that kettle. Great modification but I'm not going anywhere near my new one with a drill. Maybe if I find one on sale😂Thanks for sharing😃
Christy's Cooking Channel Thanks Christy!
Great topic Tom- thank you for sharing your creativity! Eric
Eric Taggesell Thanks Eric!
Great idea! Webber supplies a silicon 'handle' for the damper which comes standard on their 'better' models....wanted $15 for it...this is a much better and less expensive option! Thanks!
Thanks for watching Charles!
Nice grill bargain Tom and nice mod on the vent. Well worth it
PHIL IN FLORENCE Thanks Phil!
Breaking the finish allows rust a place to start.
My new Jumbo Joe 18" has vent with screw and nut. It was NOS and discontinued long time ago. I wanted the smaller size for 2 people and short legs so I can use on a cart
ron5935 Thanks for Watching Rob! If you cook often enough on the grill that hole gets covered in grease which protects it from rust.
Nice find on that kettle! Saving money Rocks! Great idea for that vent....... great instructions and demo on how to do it! You are....... The Mod Man! \m/ \m/
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que Thank you! I'm inspired by the Heavy Metal Modification Man!
LLLLLLL Thanks.....and You inspire Me! \m/
Heavy Metal Bar-B-Que & Tom: Both of you are the Monarchs of Mods!
Great job .
Thanks!
Tom. Where do you get your temp probes for the lids? I just picked up a Weber and need to add a temp gauge. Thanks!
How do you get a square carriage bolt base into the 1/4" round hole? The vent will eventually loosen by the back and forth movement if a regular bolt is used.
USARAY1947 Thanks for watching! It did fit the 1/4" is just to drill out the rivet, the wing nut on the back side can have a lock washer to keep it tight.
Could you provide information on adding the handle? Price? Where to buy? These both would be nice to know. Also, does it have a name, the handle? Thanks! Nice video!
rockbay79 Thanks for Watching! The handle is a file handle got it from Ace Hardware costs about $3.00
I heard about you yesterday from baby back maniac but didn’t have time to look you up and today I’m replacing my top vent on my Weber any couldn’t get rivit out and googled it and it’s your vid that came up first. Crazy. It works great though and you have a new subscriber.
Mike Beagan Thanks Mike!
Doesn’t the Creosote build up help the vent perform better? I would definitely add the file handle, but removing the vent damper, IMHO, would be overkill and un needed, unless it’s part of the once or twice a year maintainance regimen. Thanks for sharing.👍🏼💪🏼🇺🇸
MeatCranium BBQ AND REVIEW The creosote builds up and makes it harder to open and close, maybe not in Florida due to the heat but here in Wisconsin yes, also being crazy about clean is another reason. Thanks for Watching!
It builds up there because there is gaps where smoke/heat is escaping. The buildup allows for more accuracy when you are adjusting the dampers/daisy wheel. Its all part of seasoning the kettle. Don't remove it.
Tom Horsman When mine is warm it moves just fine, I’m with the others that say it help control the draft. I did the handled when I first bought mine.
Creosote comes from a coating on poles that line men install to give you electricity.. not the same stuff in your Weber or your fun toy!!!
Thanks for watching and commenting Daniel!
I have drilled out the vent as well but I insert a thermometer which comes with a wing nut too. Now u get the axhaust temperature, just my two cents
Thanks for Watching!
Thanks for great tip. I’d like to improve my Weber like yours.
I found the file handle right where you said it would be. I’m wondering how you got the metal extension part?
Also, why the spring on the extension?
Pardon my ignorance.
Thanks again.
Thanks for Watching! That was a long time ago…. Don’t remember any spring being used, the metal extension is a bolt that has machine threads on one side and wood threads on the other the cap or nut is a Akorn nut. Have fun
I'm stuck for clues as to why you want to clean below the vent? It's not like its the ISS and needs to be surgically cleaned. I always do my vent handles asap after I get the unit. 4x25mm machine screw and a bit of 1/2" wooden dowel with a hole drilled into one end.
gavin conway Thanks for Watching Gavin! It’s my personal preference to keep it clean
Where can I get one of those handles
Thanks for watching! Ace Hardware
Tom, where did you get the thermometer?
Carlos Valdez Thanks for watching Carlos! It’s just a cheap one from Home Depot
You got a video on how to install a one cleaning system to the old kettle with the small round holes
Thanks for watching! I do not, sorry
Hi Tom, me again. I did this mod on my spring green WSJ. I can’t seem to get the vent to operate smoothly, either it’s too tight or too loose. Did you use a washer of some sort behind the wing nut? I am wondering if that will make the difference.
Washer and lock washer, you can adjust the tension
Tom Horsman will do. Thanks!
Don’t you have problems with the nut loosening when you turn the handle? The rivet rusted out of my Smokey joe bottom l and this method doesn’t seem to work for me since it keeps getting loose when you turn the vent
offensivejerk Thanks for Watching! I may have forgot to mention that I used a lock washer also which helps Martian the proper tension.
offensivejerk A compression spring would help also
Hi Tom, can you tell me where you bought the wooden handle from? I notice you have these on most of your Webers. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! They are file handles made by Nicholson, you can find them on Amazon or at Ace Hardware
Tom Horsman thank you! I ordered a Smokey Joe in spring green and will be adding this file handle. Subbed. Have a nice day!
You also! Thanks again!
Hi. where would you usually get that handle from? thabk you
Thanks for Watching! Ace Hardware
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ one last thing, whats that screw called? thanks in advance
Good question, it’s called a Hanger Bolt
Maybe a spring would help with that wing nut to keep it from turning off
Thanks for watching! Good idea!
why not use one of the existing holes on the handle instead of drilling a 3rd hole?
Thanks for watching Mac! I guess I don’t understand the question. I drilled out the rivet and changed it to a screw so I could clean under the vent
where did you get the handle
clipsXD It's a file handle, got it at ace hardware
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ What about the threaded piece that is coming out of it???
Paul White At Ace Hardware also, has wood thread on one side and a machine thread on the other. The nut is called an Acorn nut. Used stainless for both
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ Thanks so much, keep the great mods coming..
Great mod on the vent, how is it holding up with just the wing nut? My wife hates the handle modification that I modeled after yours but I love it and she uses it too. lol
Tommy T. Thanks Tommy! Just using it today for the first time, so far so good. If you do the mod of with the wing nut just use a regular 1/4 machine screw the carriage bolt with its square end doesn't work
Where did you get the bolt for the handle? it looks like half is a lag bolt. I went to Ace and bought the file handle but having trouble locating the bolt.
Ace has them, they are half lag, half machine threads they are called Hanger Bolts. Thanks for watching!
ingenious! weber designers should watch RUclips.
James Richmond Thanks for Watching!
lol....IO paid 59 brand new for Master Touch model.
Oh no you just voided the warranty
Lol! Thanks for watching!
You stole it ;)
..Need a link for the handle you are using
The Wizard's Pit Larry Siegfried Thanks Larry! No link for the handle its a file handle I got it from Ace Hardware
Tom Horsman.. Then there must be a link stock # or a sku on the Ace Hardware site ?
The Wizard's Pit Larry Siegfried dug it out of the garbage, it's a Nicholson type A handle 21520n, there are other sizes the best Is to get the screw first in the hardware dept and then go over to tools and match the handle. Anyway that's how I did it...l
Tom Horsman Thanks Tom :)
My
Thanks for watching!
And duhhh
Thanks for Watching!
"see? that goes on like that." Completely out of the shot.
Thanks for Watching!
Why
For me it’s about keeping it clean, that may sound extreme to others but for me it’s fine. Thanks for watching!
What a waste of my time
Thanks for Watching!
